A 57 year-old, male presented with a chronic unilateral nasal obstruction and epistaxis. Intranasal endoscopy showed multiple polypoid lesions. The computed tomography exam revealed a heterogeneous mass that occupied the right nasal cavity with osteolysis of the middle and lower cone causing fluid retention of the right maxillary sinus. He underwent resection of these lesions. Pathological examination revealed malignant transformation of nasal inverted papilloma into sarcomatoid carcinoma. This case report highlights the importance of considering malignant transformation in the differential di

Inverted Papilloma (IP) is an uncommon and locally aggressive benign tumour of sinonasal region, which tends to recur after surgical resection. Most tumours are confined to the lateral nasal wall and sinuses, with maxillary sinus being most commonly affected and a male preponderance. It has a known association with in situ and invasive carcinomas with a <10% rate of malignant transformation. Most common association has been seen with squamous cell carcinoma and extremely rare association with adenocarcinoma and small cell carcinoma. A 36-year-old male presented with a left sided polypoidal nas

Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging are widely used for evaluation of patients with nasal masses, playing an integral role in their diagnosis and treatment. Inverted papilloma is a rare tumor of the sinonasal region that demonstrates characteristic imaging appearances. Preoperative diagnosis and precise tumor extent are essential for surgical planning as this tumor grows centrifugally and has high potential to recur following incomplete surgery. This pictorial review aims to illustrate the spectrum of imaging features of inverted papilloma and highlight the key features that are

Introduction Nasal obstruction is one of the main rhinologic complaints, and two diseases must be investigated as differential diagnosis: rhinosinusal polyposis and inverted papilloma. Using traditional methods, the differential diagnosis between these diseases may be difficult. The morphometric study may be a useful tool for differential diagnosis and to define prognosis. Objective Calculate the morphometric values of rhinosinusal polyposis and inverted papilloma and compare the average of variables obtained between the groups. Methods The nasal mucus of 10 patients who had surgery in the Dep

The objectives of the study were to analyze the clinical features of inverted papillomas (IP) associated with malignancy and to evaluate the correlation of tumor stage, survival and histolologic features. We conducted a retrospective review of 18 IP associated with malignancy patients. In addition, we compared histopathologic characteristics (tumor differentiation and malignant cell proportion) with clinical outcomes. Eleven of the tumors were present on the nasal cavity and 7 on the maxillary sinus. The rates of synchronous and metachronous malignancy were 10.1 and 1.1%, respectively. The dis

OBJECTIVE: To report a case of ureteral inverted papilloma (IP) with laparoscopic resolution.
METHODS: We report the case of a 30-year-old male patient who consulted for asymptomatic hematuria with the radiological finding of a filling defect at the distal right ureter. Ureteroscopy biopsy was not diagnostic, so laparoscopic ureterectomy with a Boari flap technique was performed. The pathology report showed a ureteral inverted papilloma.
CONCLUSION: Laparoscopic ureteral replacement by Boari flap is a safe surgical alternative for defects in the distal ureter with the advantages of a minimal

This presentation focuses on the challenges and practical issues faced each day by orphans of the HIV epidemic and the holistic care that can be provided, as they continue to grow from toddlerhood to adolescence and beyond. An HIV Research Trust Scholarship enabled me to spend quality time in a sub-Saharan African province worst hit by the HIV epidemic and to interact with local experts and learn from mutual clinical experience. It was an immensely useful exercise as the clinical spectra of the diseases are very similar to ours and they have ongoing active research programs very relevant to ou

OBJECTIVE: Sinonasal inverted papilloma is a rare benign tumor with a high recurrence rate and potential malignant transformation. The purpose of this study was to analyze the clinical and radiological aspects and to identify the suitable surgical approaches to be used in developing countries.
METHODOLOGY: In 3 years, 7 cases have been analyzed in a retrospective study. Patients presented with unilateral nasal obstruction and epitasis, a whitish unilateral polypoid mass, sinonasal opacity with osteolysis on CT scan or on sinus X-ray. Using these data we adopted the Krouse staging which classi

Inverted papilloma is a benign but locally aggressive sino-nasal tumour. Although relatively uncommon, involvement of the frontal sinus by this tumour represents a significant surgical challenge. The objective of the study is to propose a scheme for management of inverted papilloma involving the frontal sinus, based upon the findings of the current study. All cases of inverted papilloma operated upon between July 1995 and June 2008 were retrospectively reviewed to identify cases in which the tumour involved the frontal sinus. Among 34 patients with inverted papilloma, 4 were found to have tumo

BACKGROUND: It is well documented that inverted papillomas (IP) have a localized attachment site. Still, instead of concentrating on the attachment site, endoscopic surgeons often perform an extended resection similar to the one achieved after external surgery.
OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to evaluate an attachment-oriented endoscopic surgical strategy and to determine IP attachment diameter and location.
METHODS: A prospective study was conducted. Thirty-three consecutive patients who underwent endoscopic IP excision (2001--2007) were enrolled. Thirty patients had adequate follow-up. Attach

We report three cases of inverted papilloma of the urinary bladder. Case 1. A 19-year-old male complained of pollakisuria, gross hematuria and micturition pain. Cystoscopy revealed a smooth-surfaced tumor on a stalk at the bladder neck. The tumor was removed transurethrally. Histological diagnosis was inverted papilloma. As a safe guard, intravesical chemotherapy (Adriamycin) was performed, since pathological findings revealed a small region with mild atypical cells in the removed tumor. The patients has been subsequently followed up for ten years without any evidence of recurrence. Case 2. A

As part of urinary tract transitional cell carcinoma, inverted papilloma deserves a particular place owing to its histologic features, rarity and prognosis. These tumors are usually located in the bladder and their location in the upper urinary tract is quite exceptional. This is the reason why we were prompted to report 4 new cases.

OBJECTIVE:: To evaluate and compare the imaging feature of sinonasal oncocytic papilloma (OP) with inverted papilloma (IP).
METHODS:: The CT and MR imaging manifestations of 17 pathology proven sinonasal OPs were reviewed and compared with 17 IPs randomly selected as a control group over the same period.
RESULTS:: Seventeen sinonasal OPs had unilateral occurrence and 16 of them (94.1%) had a lobulated configuration. The distribution of original sites differed significantly between OPs and IPs (p < 0.05).OPs (47.1%) particularly involved the maxillary sinus, while IPs (64.7%) usually arose from

Sinonasal inverted papillomas (IPs) are rare benign tumors with ~15% postoperative recurrence and a ~8% risk of malignant transformation, with human papillomavirus (HPV) reported as a risk factor in IP malignant transformation. To evaluate clinical, molecular and immunohistochemical factors associated with recurrence and malignant transformation in IPs. We retrospectively analyzed 73 patients with histologically confirmed IPs that were treated at three tertiary ENT centers, including radiologic data, HPV DNA detection and p16 immunohistochemistry. Univariate analysis was used to identify facto

BACKGROUND: Inverted papilloma (IP) is a benign sinonasal tumor with a well-known propensity to recur, especially at its bony attachment site. Anecdotal evidence suggests lower rate of recurrence in primary resection. We also aimed to evaluate the effect of multifocal vs single focus of attachment in disease control.
METHODS: This work is a retrospective review of 535 IP resections performed during the period from 2006 to 2016 at a tertiary-care center. Demographic data, tumor location and attachment sites, and follow-up duration data were obtained.
RESULTS: Two hundred ten patients were eli

Inverted papilloma (IP) of the middle ear as a primary lesion or as an extension of a sinonasal papilloma, is extremely rare. Only 23 cases of primary inverted papilloma of the middle ear have been reported in the literature. They are locally aggressive tumours, with a high rate of recurrence and associated malignancy. We present a rare case of a 59-year-old man presenting with unilateral otorrhoea, tinnitus, and hearing loss. Otoscopy revealed posterior perforation filled by irregular budding neoformation. The temporal CT scan showed tissue filling the tympanic cavity as well as the mastoid a

Inverted papillomas are tumors of the sinonasal tract with a propensity to recur. Raman spectroscopy can potentially identify inverted papillomas from other tissue based on biochemical signatures. A pilot study comparing Raman spectroscopy to histopathology for 3 types of sinonasal tissue was performed. Spectral data of biopsies from patients with normal sinonasal mucosa, chronic rhinosinusitis, and inverted papillomas are compared to histopathology using principal component analysis and linear discriminant analysis after data preprocessing. A total of 18 normal, 15 chronic rhinosinusitis, and
