Degradation of pretilachlor and fenclorim and effects of these compounds on bacterial communities under anaerobic condition.

Pretilachlor and safener fenclorim are the main components of herbicides widely applied to control weeds. Although some pure cultures of bacteria and fungi which degraded these compounds under aerobic conditions were isolated, no isolated pretilachlor- and fenclorim-degrading bacterial strains under anaerobic condition had been available. In this study, the degradation of these compounds and the effects of them on bacterial community structures were investigated under anaerobic conditions. The dissipation rates of pretilachlor and fenclorim in slurries were in the order: soil from paddy field

The microbiome of Total Suspended Particles (TSP) and its influence on the respiratory microbiome of healthy office workers.

Air particulate matter (PM) is widely recognized for its potential to negatively affect human health, including changes in the upper respiratory microbiome. However, research on PM-associated microbiota remains limited and mostly focused on PM (e.g., PM2.5 and PM10). This study aims to characterize for the first time the microbiome of Total Suspended Particles (TSP) and investigate the correlations of indoor TSP with the human upper respiratory microbiome. Biological and environmental samples were collected over three collection periods lasting three weeks each, between May and July 2022 at th

Elucidating environmental factors and their combined effects on CKDu in Sri Lanka using zebrafish.

Chronic kidney disease with uncertain etiology (CKDu) in Sri Lanka has attracted much attention as a global health issue. However, how environmental factors in local drinking water induce kidney damage in organisms is still elusive. We investigated multiple environmental factors including water hardness and fluoride (HF), heavy metals (HM), microcystin-LR (MC-LR), and their combined exposure (HFMM) to elucidate their toxic effects on CKDu risk in zebrafish. Acute exposure affected renal development and inhibited the fluorescence of Na, K-ATPase alpha1A4:GFP zebrafish kidney. Chronic exposure i

Transforming anaerobic granular sludge into a symbiotic system with aerobic granular and floc sludge: Self-assembly and niche differentiation of simultaneous nitrification and denitrification.

Aerobic granular sludge (AGS) facilitates simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND) but suffers from protracted start-up and instability. Meanwhile, the synergistic nitrogen removal mechanisms between AGS and its disintegration-derived flocculent sludge (FS) remain unclear. In this study, sieve-enclosed anaerobic granular sludge (AnGS) was inoculated into a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) and transformed into an AGS-FS symbiotic system. This system achieved up to 80.17% total nitrogen (TN) removal and maintained TN removal as high as 78.05% when treating authentic wastewater. Spatial

Isolation, Molecular, and Metabolic Profiling of Benzene-Remediating Bacteria Inhabiting the Tannery Industry Soil.

Benzene is a pervasive contaminant and human carcinogen. Its remediation from environmental resources using conventional procedures has always been challenging due to high cost and incomplete benzene degradation. The present study was designed to explore highly efficient bacteria with benzene degrading potential from tannery industry soil, which might be used as an alternative to these conventional benzene removal remedies. Bacterial isolation was performed using benzene (80 μl/1,000 ml) supplemented with minimal salt media (MSM). Characterization of isolates was carried out by performing grow

The porcine corneal surface bacterial microbiome: A distinctive niche within the ocular surface.

PURPOSE: The ocular surface microbiome has been described as paucibacterial. Until now, studies investigating the bacterial community associated with the ocular surface through high-throughput sequencing have focused on the conjunctiva. Conjunctival samples are thought to reflect and be representative of the microbiome residing on the ocular surface, including the cornea. Here, we hypothesized that the bacterial community associated with the corneal surface was different from those of the inferonasal and superotemporal conjunctival fornices, and from the tear film. METHODS: Both eyes from 15

Culturable diversity and functional annotation of psychrotrophic bacteria from cold desert of Leh Ladakh (India).

To study culturable bacterial diversity under subzero temperature conditions and their possible functional annotation, soil and water samples from Leh Ladakh region were analysed. Ten different nutrient combinations were used to isolate the maximum possible culturable morphotypes. A total of 325 bacterial isolates were characterized employing 16S rDNA-Amplified Ribosomal DNA Restriction Analysis with three restriction endonucleases AluI, MspI and HaeIII, which led to formation of 23-40 groups for the different sites at 75 % similarity index, adding up to 175 groups. Protein control of true, gated, and coupled electron transfer reactions.

Electron transfer (ET) through and between proteins is a fundamental biological process. The rates of ET depend upon the thermodynamic driving force, the reorganization energy, and the degree of electronic coupling between the reactant and product states. The analysis of protein ET reactions is complicated by the fact that non-ET processes might influence the observed ET rate in kinetically complex biological systems. This Account describes studies of the methylamine dehydrogenase-amicyanin-cytochrome c-551i protein ET complex that have revealed the influence of several features of the protein

Plant growth-promoting characteristics of halotolerant endophytic bacteria isolated from Sporobolus specatus (Vahr) Kunth and Cyperus laevigatus L. of Ethiopian rift valley lakes.

Understanding plant microbes' intimate relationship and search for beneficial microbes is a sustainable alternative to improve plant growth and yield under a wide range of biotic and abiotic stress conditions. More than 20% of the total global agricultural land is affected by salinity. High salinity challenges crop plants by affecting several metabolic pathways and decreasing plant growth and yield. Unlike chemical fertilizers and pesticides, endophytic microbes offer an eco-friendly approach to increasing crop yield via various metabolites during salinity stress. The objective of this study w

Proteomic profile and protease activity in the skin mucus of greater amberjack (Seriola dumerili) infected with the ectoparasite Neobenedenia girellae - An immunological approach.

Skin mucus is considered the first barrier against diseases in fish. The skin mucus protein profile of the greater amberjack (Seriola dumerili) and its changes due to experimental infection with Neobenedenia girellae were studied by combining 2-DE-MS/MS and gel-free LC-MS/MS proteomic approaches. The 2-DE results led to the identification of 69 and 55 proteins in noninfected and infected fish, respectively, and revealed that keratins were specifically cleaved in parasitized fish. Therefore, the skin mucus of the infected fish showed a higher protease activity due to, at least in part, an incre

Bioanalytical insight into the life of microbial populations: A chemical monitoring of ureolytic bacteria growth.

In this publication an alternative approach to investigations of bacterial growth is proposed. Contrary to the conventional physical methods it is based on enzyme activity detection. The procedure for real-time and on-line monitoring of microbial ureolytic activity (applied as a model experimental biosystem) in the flow analysis format is presented. The developed fully-mechanized bioanalytical flow system is composed of solenoid micropumps and microvalves actuated by Arduino microcontroller. The photometric detection based on Nessler reaction is performed using dedicated flow-through optoelect

Characterization of H2S removal and microbial community in landfill cover soils.

H2S is a source of odors at landfills and poses a threat to the surrounding environment and public health. In this work, compared with a usual landfill cover soil (LCS), H2S removal and biotransformation were characterized in waste biocover soil (WBS), an alternative landfill cover material. With the input of landfill gas (LFG), the gas concentrations of CH4, CO2, O2, and H2S, microbial community and activity in landfill covers changed with time. Compared with LCS, lower CH4 and H2S concentrations were detected in the WBS. The potential sulfur-oxidizing rate and sulfate-reducing rate as well a

Different lipid A types in lipopolysaccharides of phototrophic and related non-phototrophic bacteria.

Lipid A analyses confirm not only the present taxa of the purple nonsulfur bacteria (formerly Rhodospirillaceae), but also phylogenetical relatedness of distinct phototrophic to distinct non-phototrophic bacteria, as was suggested by cataloguing 16S rRNA. For example, lipid A with ester-bound 3-OH-10:0 and the rare amide-linked 3-oxo-14:0 is common to the phototrophic Rhodobacter capsulatus and Rhodobacter sphaeroides and also to Paracoccus denitrificans and Thiobacillus versutus. 'Lipid ADAG' (lipid A with 2,3-diamino-D-glucose (DAG)) occurs in the phototrophic Rhodopseudomonas viridis and Rh

Bioacclimation versus bioaugmentation: efficacy, mechanisms, applications, and optimization of biological nitrogen removal in high-salinity wastewater.

Bioaugmentation and bioacclimation are two strategies to enhance nitrogen removal from hypersaline wastewater. Using Web of Science literature (2016-2026), this review systematically summarizes advances in improving salt tolerance via these two strategies and conducts a bibliometric analysis of 758 publications to identify research hotspots and trends. The key conclusions are as follows: (1) Research on hypersaline wastewater treatment has grown rapidly, yet existing studies focus mainly on applications; microbial mechanisms should be prioritized. (2) Lab-scale bioacclimation tolerates salinit

Removal of mixed PhACs by combined UV/H2O2 and biologically activated carbon process: Toxicity assessment, transformation products and microbial community.

This study examined the removal and toxicity reduction of mixed pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs), including carbamazepine, erythromycin, gemfibrozil, and diclofenac, in the UV/H2O2 tandem with biologically activated carbon (UV/H2O2-BAC) process and explored potential detoxification mechanisms. Results indicated that the combined process effectively removed the mixed PhACs, with the UV/H2O2 segment being the primary contributor. As distinct from concentration removal, the effluent toxicity significantly increased after UV/H2O2 treatment. Multi-parameter toxicity assessments indicated t
