Altered default mode network connectivity in basal ganglia intracerebral hemorrhage: A resting-state fMRI study.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigates the impact of basal ganglia intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) on default mode network (DMN) connectivity and its relationship with cognitive impairment using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI). METHOD: DMN differences between left/right basal ganglia ICH patients and healthy controls were analyzed respectively. Co-altered brain region were obtained by overlapping the differential brain regions of bilateral basal ganglia ICH. Gene and functional decoding analyses validated the role of co-altered brain regions in cognition. Whole-brain

Effects of acupuncture on brain functional networks in patients with mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease: a systematic review and activation likelihood estimation meta-analysis of neuroimaging studies.

BACKGROUND: The increasing prevalence of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) presents a significant societal and familial burden. Acupuncture has shown promise in modulating brain function; however, systematic evidence on its effects on brain functional networks in individuals with AD and MCI remains limited. This study aimed to quantitatively synthesize neuroimaging findings using activation likelihood estimation (ALE) meta-analyses. METHODS: We systematically searched PubMed, PsycINFO, Google Scholar, SinoMed, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) for n

Perceived stigma mediates the relationship between regional gray matter volume and aggressive behavior in children affected by parental HIV/AIDS.

Perceived stigma, the subjective awareness of prejudice, stereotypes, and discrimination against persons living with HIV and their children, is a recognized predictor of behavioral problems. However, the neurobiological basis underlying perceived stigma and its role in influencing aggressive behavior at neural level in children affected by parental HIV/AIDS remain largely unclear. In this study, 112 participants aged 10-17 years from a large neurobiological project were extracted for gray matter volume (GMV) in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and medial temporal lobe (MTL). The results revealed a

Epidermoid tumour within the collateral sulcus: a rare location and atypical presentation.

Epidermoid tumours (ETs) are uncommon benign lesions that may grow by spreading in the subarachnoid space of the basal cisterns and expanding to conform to the shape of specific sulci and fissures. A temporobasal location is very rare, and there have been no reports regarding single sulcus involvement of ETs. We describe the case of an ET located on the basal surface of the temporal lobe, predominantly within the collateral sulcus, which separates the parahippocampal gyrus medially from the fusiform gyrus laterally. We report the case of a 25-year-old woman with complex visual hallucinations.

Angiotensin receptor blockade modulates resting state functional connectivity in the memory network rather than fear network - implications for posttraumatic stress disorder.

Population-based studies have shown that the intake of Angiotensin-II receptor blockers (ARBs), commonly used to treat high blood pressure, is associated with reduced post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. However, the underlying neural mechanisms remain unclear. While PTSD development is characterized by maladaptive processing within brain networks associated with fear processing and memory formation during trauma exposure, there is increasing evidence that such aberrations manifest in altered resting state functional connectivity (rsFC) of brain regions in these networks. In this do

Dynamic changes in fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations in patients with chronic insomnia.

BACKGROUND: Previous neuroimaging studies have mostly focused on changes in static functional connectivity in patients with chronic insomnia (CI) . Features of dynamic brain activity in patients with CI have rarely been described in detail. The present study investigated changes in dynamic intrinsic brain activity in patients with CI by dynamic fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (dfALFF) analysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 30 patients with CI and 27 healthy controls (HCs) were enrolled. We compared dfALFF between these two groups, and examined the correlation between ch

Hierarchical organization of the human ventral visual streams revealed with magnetoencephalography.

The hierarchical organization between 25 ventral stream visual cortical regions and 180 cortical regions was measured with magnetoencephalography using the Human Connectome Project Multimodal Parcellation atlas in 83 Human Connectome Project participants performing a visual memory task. The aim was to reveal the hierarchical organization using a whole-brain model based on generative effective connectivity with this fast neuroimaging method. V1-V4 formed a first group of interconnected regions. Especially V4 had connectivity to a ventrolateral visual stream: V8, the fusiform face cortex, and po

Human spatial navigation: Neural representations of spatial scales and reference frames obtained from an ALE meta-analysis.

Humans use different spatial reference frames (allocentric or egocentric) to navigate successfully toward their destination in different spatial scale spaces (environmental or vista). However, it remains unclear how the brain represents different spatial scales and different spatial reference frames. Thus, we conducted an activation likelihood estimation (ALE) meta-analysis of 47 fMRI articles involving human spatial navigation. We found that both the environmental and vista spaces activated the parahippocampal place area (PPA), retrosplenial complex (RSC), and occipital place area in the righ

Parahippocampal pathology in Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.

BACKGROUND: The hippocampal lesions in Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) have been reported to be characteristically mild, but it has not been well known how the lesions change pathologically from the entorhinal cortex to the hippocampus. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study was designed to clarify the ambiguity attending the parahippocampal lesions in CJD. Fourteen cases with pathologically diagnosed CJD were studied. They were classified into 2 groups: group I, which did not have cortical status spongiosus (SS) and included 5 cases; and group II, which had cortical SS and included 9 cases. Neuron

Connectome-wide investigation of altered resting-state functional connectivity in war veterans with and without posttraumatic stress disorder.

Altered resting-state functional connectivity in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) suggests neuropathology of the disorder. While seed-based fMRI connectivity analysis is often used for the studies, such analysis requires defining a seed location a priori, which restricts search scope and could bias findings toward presupposed areas. Recently, a comprehensive exploratory voxel-wise connectivity analysis, the connectome-wide association approach, has been introduced using multivariate distance matrix regression (MDMR) for resting-state functional connectivity analysis. The current study perf

Congenital transtentorial parahippocampal herniation presenting with new-onset seizures in a 14-year-old boy.

Congenital transtentorial herniation of the parahippocampal gyrus is an uncommon developmental anomaly that can mimic pathological brain herniation. Unlike the acute form associated with raised intracranial pressure, this benign variant usually remains asymptomatic and is often discovered incidentally during neuroimaging for unrelated conditions. We report the case of a 14-year-old previously healthy boy who presented with a new-onset generalized tonic-clonic seizure followed by transient postictal confusion. Neurological and systemic examinations, as well as laboratory investigations and elec

Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Oculomotor Dysfunction in Mild Traumatic Brain Injury.

Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is a significant cause of disability, especially when symptoms become chronic. This chronicity is often linked to oculomotor dysfunction (OMD). To our knowledge, this is the first prospective study to localize aberrations in brain function between mTBI cohorts, by comparing patients with mTBI with OMD with an mTBI control group without OMD, using task and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Ten subjects with mTBI who had OMD (OMD group) were compared with nine subjects with mTBI who had no findings of OMD (control group). These groups

Two distinct subgroups of senile dementia of Alzheimer type: quantitative study of neurofibrillary tangles.

The heterogeneity of senile dementia of Alzheimer type (SDAT) has been suggested by some authors clinically and neuropathologically. The heterogeneity of SDAT was investigated based on quantification of NFT combining Braak and Braak's neuropathological staging and the density of NFT in various areas of the cerebral cortex. Brain tissues were examined from 16 autopsy cases with clinically late onset dementia (> age 65) and neuropathologically diagnosed dementia of Alzheimer type (DAT). Gallyas-Braak staining was used for the quantification of NFT. The density of NFT was examined in the precentr

Misinterpretation of parahippocampal herniation for a posterior fossa tumor: imaging and intraoperative findings.

Tumors of the hippocampal and parahippocampal gyrus are not uncommon, nor are lesions of the cerebellopontine and ambient cisterns. Lesions in these areas include astrocytomas, meningiomas, gangliogliomas, hamartomas, neurilemomas, epidermoids, and dermoids. Preoperative imaging is an important tool that can help distinguish lesions, making surgical therapy more targeted and appropriate. The authors report a case of a 41-year-old man with right-sided atypical trigeminal neuralgia and a left ambient cistern abnormality that was radiologically interpreted as a mesial temporal lobe or extramedull

Longitudinal associations between albuminuria and renal function and annual brain volume changes: the Ohasama study.

BACKGROUND: Longitudinal studies have not examined the associations between albuminuria and renal function and changes in brain volume. Therefore, we investigated it in a general Asian population after excluding individuals with antihypertensive medication use and accounting for loss to follow-up bias. METHODS: We analyzed data from 114 participants aged ≥ 50 years without a history of ischemic heart disease, stroke, or antihypertensive treatment in Ohasama town, Japan. Brain volumes were measured using magnetic resonance imaging. Multiple linear regression was performed to assess the associa

The multimodal neuroimaging signatures and gene expression profiles for adverse childhood experiences.

BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have been considered significant drivers of negative mental health and cognitive outcomes. However, identifying clear neurobiological signatures of ACEs has been challenging due to limited sample sizes, participant heterogeneity, and methodological variability. METHODS: A whole-brain meta-analysis was conducted to identify functional, structural, and overlapping brain alterations in ACEs-exposed individuals compared to unexposed controls, using a large sample (functional analysis: 63 studies, 3549 participants; structural analysis: 38 studies,
