Parenting Stress and Depressive Symptoms Among Chinese Parents of Children With and Without Oppositional Defiant Disorder: A Three-Wave Longitudinal Study.

Parents of children with oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) experience greater stress in parenting and more parental depressive symptoms. The study examined the longitudinal and bidirectional associations between three dimensions of parenting stress (i.e., parental distress, parent-child dysfunctional interaction, and difficult child) and parental depressive symptoms from a sample of Chinese parents of children with or without ODD. The sample included 256 parents of children with ODD and 265 parents of children without ODD, along with children's teachers. Using a three wave, cross-lagged desi

Bidirectional dynamics between the individual and dyadic subsystems in a family: Parental burnout, parent-child interactions, and the role of social support.

Many parents have days when they encounter parental burnout, which might change with their daily experience. Studies have examined how parental burnout derives from and influences parent-child interactions. However, from a family systems perspective, it remains unclear whether parental burnout (individual subsystem) and parent-child interactions (dyadic subsystem) are bidirectionally associated in daily life and what family-level resources influence this process. This study aims to reveal the dynamic bidirectional relationships between maternal daily parental burnout and parent-child interacti

Marital psychological and physical aggression and children's mental and physical health: direct, mediated, and moderated effects.

Relations between marital aggression (psychological and physical) and children's health were examined. Children's emotional insecurity was assessed as a mediator of these relations, with distinctions made between marital aggression against mothers and fathers and ethnicity (African American or European American), socioeconomic status, and child gender examined as moderators of effects. Participants were 251 community-recruited families, with multiple reporters of each construct. Aggression against either parent yielded similar effects for children. Children's emotional insecurity mediated the

Speech acts and the pragmatic deficits of autism.

In a videotaped free-play session with a parent, autistic children were compared with mental-age matched Developmental Language Delay (DLD) children and with normally developing (ND) 2-year-olds in the use of communicative acts by parent and child. Groups were matched for language level. Autistic children had more incidents of no responses, produced less affirming, turn-taking vocalization, and gesture, and were less likely to initiate communication than other children. Parent groups differed only in a greater amount of initiating and use of imperatives by parents of autistic children. Few rel

Maternal depression, parent-child relationships, and resilient outcomes in adolescence.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between maternal depression, parent-child relations, and resilient outcomes in the context of risk in a cross-sectional study of 816 15-year-olds in Australia. METHOD: Resilient outcomes were defined as the following: no current Axis I diagnosis, no history of depressive disorder diagnoses, no current internalizing problems, and no indication of current social functioning difficulties. Parent-child relationship qualities were measured using the Five-Minute Speech Sample, the Children's Report of Parent Behavior Inventory, and a child report questionnaire

Marital hostility and child sleep problems: direct and indirect associations via hostile parenting.

The current study examined two family process predictors of parent-reported child sleep problems at 4.5 years in an adoption sample: marital hostility and hostile parenting. Participants were 361 linked triads of birth parents, adoptive parents, and adopted children. We examined direct and indirect pathways from marital hostility to child sleep problems via hostile parenting. Mothers' marital hostility at 9 months was associated with child sleep problems at 4.5 years. Fathers' marital hostility at 9 months evidenced an indirect effect on child sleep problems at 4.5 years via fathers' hostile p

Change in Maternal Stress for Families in Treatment for their Children with Oppositional Defiant Disorder.

Our objective was to predict change in maternal stress over the course of a randomized clinical trial comparing the efficacy of two interventions for Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD): Parent Management Training and Collaborative & Proactive Solutions. In a secondary analysis of data collected from this randomized clinical trial, we examined whether children's self-reported positive relations with their parents impacted responsiveness to treatment, which in turn impacted maternal stress. One hundred thirty-four children and their parents (38.1% female, ages 7-14, M age = 9.51, SD = 1.77) wer

[Clinical Validation of the Caregiver-Child Socioemotional and Relationship Rating Scale (SIRS) for Child Behavior in a Preschool-Age Sample].

Clinical Validation of the Caregiver-Child Socioemotional and Relationship Rating Scale (SIRS) for Child Behavior in a Preschool-Age Sample The description of child behavior in mother-child-interaction is important in early detection and treatment of psychiatric disorders in preschool children. The Caregiver-Child Socioemotional and Relationship Rating Scale (SIRS) may serve this diagnostic purpose. We aim to examine interrater-reliability of SIRS and concurrent, convergent, and discriminant validity to maternal behavior by Play-PAB, and a measure of mother-child-relationsship by Parent-Infant

The father's role in risk and resilience among Mexican-American adolescents.

Research suggests fathers are important to adolescent well-being, yet there is limited information regarding how fathering is associated with adolescent risk and resilience in Mexican American families. This cross-sectional study utilized a structural equation model to examine whether parent-child alienation mediated the relations between parental displays of warmth and hostility and the outcomes of adolescent resilience and delinquency in Mexican American families (N = 272). Results indicated that adolescent-perceived alienation from parents was a significant predictor of both resilience and

Parental stress and indifference and the parent's withdrawal from the relationship with their child: a structural approach.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to test the theoretical model assuming that parental indifference arises as a result of the parent experiencing stress in the relationship with their child. Therefore, we tested the model describing the relations among the variables of: (a) parent's experience of stress in the relationship with their child, (b) formation of a negative mental representation of the child in the parent's mind, (c) indifference toward the child, and (d) withdrawal of the parent from the relationship with their child. Subsequently, it was tested whether parental indifference was

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Symptoms in Mothers and Fathers: Family Level Interactions in Relation to Parenting.

Previous studies linking parent ADHD symptoms to parenting have typically focused on each parent individually. To provide a broader understanding of family context, in this study, levels of inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity in mothers and fathers were examined, both individually and in combination, in relation to negative parenting and child-rearing disagreements. Two-parent families of 5 to 13 year old boys (126 with ADHD and 53 typically developing) participated. Parents reported their own ADHD symptoms and their perceptions of child-rearing disagreements. Parenting was measured usin

Infant psychiatric disorders.

Infant mental health problems include difficulties to regulate emotions or attention, crying, sleeping or feeding problems as well as aggressive behavior. Early identifications of these problems help to change developmental trajectories and improve developmental outcomes. Psychiatric assessment and classification have to take into account the rapid processes of development as well as the inseparable linkage between symptoms of the infant, psychosocial risks in the family environment, and parent-child relations. The proposed DSM-5 classification system presents a systematic description of menta

An evaluation of health-related quality of life and its relation with functional vision in children with cerebral visual impairment.

BACKGROUND: Health-related Quality of Life (HRQOL) and its relation with functional vision is understudied in cerebral visual impairment (CVI). AIMS: Characterising HRQOL, comparing child self- and parent proxy-reports, and exploring relations with functional vision. METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Seventy-three children with CVI (n females = 33; n males = 40; Mean performance age = 7y2m) were included. HRQOL was measured with Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL) child self- and parent proxy-reports and compared using Wilcoxon signed-rank tests. Risk for impaired HRQOL was evaluated using cu

Longitudinal profiles of parental self- and child-focused emotion regulation.

Parenting is an emotion-eliciting experience that requires parents to navigate the dual demands of regulating their own and their children's emotions, drawing on regulatory strategies such as reappraisal and rumination. However, patterns of self- and child-focused reappraisal and rumination and their associations with parental exhaustion, children's internalizing problems, children's academic achievement, and parent-child relationships remain underexplored. Our preregistered three-wave online study targeted U.S. parents of sixth-ninth graders (N = 1,046; 51.53% mothers; Mage = 43.22). We emplo

Parent-child interaction at age 5 months: genetic and environmental contributions and associations with later socio-communicative development.

BACKGROUND: Characteristics of parent-child interaction (PCI) early in life have been associated with later development in the child. Twin studies can help to disentangle child contributions to parent-child interaction, for example, by assessing the influence of the child's genetics on his/her social environment, which includes parental behaviour. METHODS: Infant twins from a community sample [354 monozygotic (MZ), 268 same-sex dizygotic (DZ)] were assessed in terms of PCI at age 5 months. We used the classical twin design to map the aetiology of several parent and child PCI scales and their

Convergence between statistically derived behavior problem syndromes and child psychiatric diagnoses.

The relations between scores on statistically derived behavior problem syndromes and DSM-III diagnoses were examined for 270 clinically referred children aged 6 through 16. Each child's parent completed the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) and was administered the NIMH Diagnostic Interview Schedule for Children (DISC)--a structured interview covering DSM-III diagnostic criteria. Numerous behavior problems scales scored from the CBCL were significantly related to one or more diagnoses. The strongest relations were between scores on the Hyperactive, Delinquent, and Depressed scales and diagnoses

Parent-child hostility and child ADHD symptoms: a genetically sensitive and longitudinal analysis.

BACKGROUND: Families of children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) report higher rates of conflict within the family and more negative parent-child relationships. This study aimed to test whether negative parent-child relationships have a risk effect on ADHD symptoms using two complementary designs. METHOD: The first sample included 886 twin pairs, aged 11-17 years, derived from a population-based twin study. The second sample was derived from a longitudinal community study and included 282 parents and their children, aged 11-14 years. Questionnaires were used to assess ADH

Parent Emotion Talk with Preschoolers from Low-Income Mexican American and Chinese American Families: Links to Sociocultural Factors.

Emotion talk (ET), an emotion socialization practice theorized to promote children's emotion understanding and emotion regulation, has been linked to better socioemotional adjustment in diverse samples. Immigrant children face developmentally unique challenges and opportunities related to their multi-lingual and multi-cultural experiences. The present study aimed to identify sociocultural correlates of parent ET in two groups of low-income immigrant families with preschool-age children: Mexican American (MA) and Chinese American (CA) families. In 90 parent-child dyads (child age = 38 to 70 mon

Development and psychometric evaluation of an Arab version of the Family Peer Relationship Questionnaire.

Little is known about parent and peer relationships in immigrant adolescents due to a dearth of culturally sensitive measures. We adapted the Family Peer Relationship Questionnaire (FPRQ) for Arab immigrant mothers and their adolescents. Mothers and adolescents completed parallel versions of the Arab FPRQ and measures of child behavior problems, child social relations, and maternal depression. Data analyses included confirmatory factor analysis and concurrent validity. The proposed four-factor structure was replicated in both the mother and child forms. Scores from the Arab FPRQ subscales and
