The relationship between a less gender-stereotypical parenthood and alcohol-related care and death: a registry study of Swedish mothers and fathers.

BACKGROUND: In general men tend to drink more alcohol and experience more alcohol-related sickness, injuries and mortality than women. In this paper, the overall hypothesis was that increased gender similarity in the division of parental duties would lead to convergence in alcohol-related harm. The aim was to analyse whether the risk of alcohol harm differs between parents who fit a gender-stereotypical versus those with a less gender-stereotypical division of childcare and paid work. METHODS: The study sample was a retrospective registry-based cohort study of all Swedish couples who had thei

Electrochemical reduction of N-(arylthio)succinimides: the effect of aryl substituents.

The electrochemical reduction of a series of N-(arylthio)succinimides (1a-e) was investigated using cyclic voltammetry and constant-potential electrolysis. These results in conjunction with a computational investigation and application of electron transfer theories allowed elucidation of the initial electron transfer mechanisms, global reaction mechanisms, rationalization of trends and differences, and determination of the effect of the substituent on the aromatic ring on the reduction reactions. The study also revealed the effect of the leaving group through comparison with investigations of

Novel sleep management method in a toddler displaying fear and trauma: the Boss of My Sleep Book.

Sleep problems in toddlers occur in ∼40% of children and increase the likelihood of postnatal depression. Most sleep training in toddlers requires contact with a trained professional, and requires a parent to ignore their child's cries, causing distress to many children and parents, increasing attrition and leaving families untreated and at risk. This case study reports success in significantly ameliorating sleep reluctance and bedtime fears in a sleep disturbed toddler with a history of trauma. It uses a novel use of bedtime behaviour management with some positive reinforcement techniques, ca

Wrap-clipping with a Dacron mesh silastic sheet. Technical note.

A technique combining wrapping and clipping using a Silastic sheet coated with Dacron mesh is described for treatment of fusiform or broad-based cerebral aneurysms. This sheet is easily tailored to wrapping the aneurysm base while avoiding involvement of the cranial nerves or branching vessels. The sheet is semitransparent so that the caliber of the newly constructed parent artery is easily adjusted during wrap-clipping. After the aneurysm and the parent artery have been circumferentially wrapped with the sheet, aneurysm clips are applied on the sheet so that the base of the aneurysm is clippe

Experiences of familial acceptance-rejection among transwomen of color.

Because of the stigma associated with transgenderism, many transwomen (biological males who identify as female or transgender) experience rejection or abuse at the hands of their parents and primary caregivers as children and adolescents. The Parental Acceptance-Rejection (PAR) theory indicates that a child's experience of rejection may have a significant impact on their adult lives. The purpose of this study was to conduct a qualitative analysis of adult transwomen of color's experiences with caregivers, guided by PAR theory. Twenty transwomen of color completed semi-structured interviews exp

The needs of parents with children suffering from lethal epidermolysis bullosa.

BACKGROUND: Some subtypes of the heterogeneous genetic blistering disease epidermolysis bullosa (EB) lead to lethality in childhood. The severity and extent of blistering leaves these patients living in excruciating pain and distress their entire lives. Parents of these patients experience some specific problems, such as the unfamiliarity of EB amongst healthcare professionals and the suffering and loss of their child. OBJECTIVE: To identify the needs of parents who have lost their child to lethal EB. METHODS: A qualitative study was performed, comprising semistructured, in-depth interviews

Risk and Protective Factors of Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children and Adolescents in sub-Saharan Africa: A Systematic Review.

Commercial sexual exploitation of children (CSEC) has emerged as a critical child protection and public health concern in recent years. While the phenomenon is prevalent globally, its impact is compounded in sub-Saharan Africa owing to the cultural and socioeconomic challenges that leave many households in the region vulnerable. The present study synthesized existing evidence using the socioecological model as a guiding framework to assess the risk and protective factors associated with CSEC in sub-Saharan Africa. A protocol for the study was published in PROSPERO (CRD42022331832) with pre-spe

Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is frequently used by parents for the treatment of functional constipation in children.

OBJECTIVES: Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) has gained increasing attention as a supportive treatment for chronic diseases such as epilepsy, migraine, autism, and cancer in children. This study aimed to determine the frequency, motivation, and outcomes of CAM in children with functional constipation. METHODS: From January 2018 till September 2019, parents of patients (0-18 years) who were treated for functional constipation (ROME IV-criteria) at our colorectal center were asked to complete a questionnaire on the utilization of CAM. Demographic data and clinical assessments were d

Study Preregistration: Do Parenting Programs Change Interrelations Among Child Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Oppositional-Defiant Disorder, Conduct Disorder Characteristics? Individual Participant Data Network Analysis.

There is high co-occurrence between attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and disruptive behavior problems in children, including oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and conduct disorder (CD).1 Recommended non-pharmacological interventions for managing ADHD, ODD, and CD characteristics in children largely overlap, with behavioral parent training programs showing empirical evidence of effectiveness.2,3 By improving parent-child interaction patterns, these programs may also interrupt cycles linking characteristics of ADHD with ODD and CD in children. For example, after intervention, ch

The Health and Development of Young Children Who Witnessed Their Parent's Arrest Prior to Parental Jail Incarceration.

Most U.S. incarceration occurs in jails, with more than 10 million annual admissions, and most individuals in jail are parents of minor children. In this short-term longitudinal study, we examined the health and development of young children who did or did not witness their parent's arrest prior to parental jail incarceration. 228 individuals in 76 triads (incarcerated parents, children, at-home caregivers) were enrolled from four jails in two states. Jailed parents and caregivers reported on whether the child witnessed the parent's arrest or crime. Children's caregivers completed questionnair

"As a parent, I want to do more for my child": A phenomenological approach to understanding the experiences of parents involved in surgical decision-making for children with congenital hand anomalies.

BACKGROUND: A congenital anomaly of the hand can affect both function and appearance, and places a stressful psychological burden on the family, especially parents. Surgery during infancy may prevent later disabilities, but little is known of the importance of parents' involvement in these decisions in terms of psychological adjustment or treatment satisfaction. OBJECTIVE: To understand parents' perceptions of involvement in their child's surgery for limb anomaly, and their preferences for the support of healthcare professionals. Results should lead to recommended interventions to improve fam

Bereaved parents involvement in maternity hospital perinatal death review processes: 'Nobody even thought to ask us anything'.

INTRODUCTION: The death of a baby is devastating for parents, families and staff involved. Involving bereaved parents in their baby's care and in the maternity hospital perinatal death review can help parents manage their bereavement and plan for the future. In Ireland, bereaved parents generally have not been involved in this review process. The aim of our study was to assess parents' perception of how they may be appropriately involved in the maternity hospital perinatal death review in ways that benefit them and the review process itself. METHODS: Bereaved parents (n = 20) in Ireland were

Persistent Disadvantages or New Opportunities? The Role of Agency and Structural Constraints for Low-Achieving Adolescents' School-to-Work Transitions.

School leavers with low educational attainment face great difficulties in their school-to-work transitions. They are, however, quite heterogeneous in terms of their personal and social resources. These within-group differences may influence who shows initiative during the school-to-work transition period and thereby helps employers recognize their learning potential at labor market entry. Yet this recognition also depends on the ways employers select applicants, which may prevent them from discovering such within-group differences. We therefore investigate the interplay between agency and its

The Influences of Drug Abuse on Mother-Infant Interaction Through the Lens of the Biopsychosocial Model of Health and Illness: A Review.

Women who abuse illicit drugs often engage in atypical parenting behaviors that interfere with the natural development of mother-infant interaction and attachment. Maternal caregiving deficits leave pronounced adverse consequences in the wake of drug abuse relapse, which often occurs and in early infancy. These are times when the child requires optimal parental care. The contemporary literature documents long-term implications of illicit drug-abuse in parenting on infants. However, factors that drive and sustain the influence of drug abuse on parent-infant outcomes remain elusive. This review

A multi-method evaluation of parent and child factors associated with child abuse potential across valid and invalid profiles on the Brief Child Abuse Potential Inventory.

Child abuse is a pervasive problem impacting millions of children. Researchers largely rely on parent-report questionnaires to examine risk for child abuse, leaving a gap in research concerning the link between observed parent and child behaviors and child abuse potential. The current study pursued a multi-method approach to explore relations between parent and child factors and child abuse potential (via the Brief Child Abuse Potential Inventory; BCAP) in a sample of 84 referred for behavioral problems in Australia. About half of the sample engaged in socially desirable responding which resul

The lived experience and supportive care needs of Australian parents caring for children with Epidermolysis Bullosa: a qualitative descriptive analysis.

BACKGROUND: Inherited epidermolysis bullosa (EB) is a rare, incurable genodermatosis characterised with recurrent skin blistering and mucosal fragility. Wound care and nursing are critical to everyday lives of children living with EB, while the profound effect of caring for a child with a painful genetic condition leaves a significant effect on quality of life of parents and the family. This study aimed to better understand the lived experiences and supportive care needs of parents of children with EB in Australia. METHODS: Interpretative phenomenological analysis was used, and semi structure

Should we respect parents' views about which results to return from genomic sequencing?

Genomic sequencing (GS) is now well embedded in clinical practice. However, guidelines issued by professional bodies disagree about whether unsolicited findings (UF)-i.e., disease-causing changes found in the DNA unrelated to the reason for testing-should be reported if they are identified inadvertently during data analysis. This extends to a lack of clarity regarding parents' ability to decide about receiving UF for their children. To address this, I use an ethical framework, the Zone of Parental Discretion (ZPD), to consider which UF parents should be allowed to choose (not) to receive and e

Sick leave due to diarrhea caused by contamination of drinking water supply with Cryptosporidium hominis in Sweden: a retrospective study.

We investigated sick leave from work, studies, preschool, and kindergarten occurring between 1 November 2010 and 31 January 2011 and associated with a waterborne outbreak of diarrhea caused by Cryptosporidium hominis in late November 2010 in Östersund, Sweden with 45.2% of 60,000 residents being symptomatic. A questionnaire defining acute watery diarrhoea and/or ≥3 diarrhea episodes/day as cryptosporidiosis was sent to 1,508 residents in late January 2011 (response rate 69.2%). Among adults aged 18-60 years, 24.0% took sick leave for a mean of 4.6 (SD ± 4.0) days due to cryptosporidiosis, and

Women workers' rights and managers' point of view: a qualitative approach to maternity leave and breastfeeding.

This study aimed to learn managers' points of view on maternity leave and breastfeeding and find promotion, protection, and support strategies for breastfeeding in the work environment. This qualitative study, using Laurence Bardin's content analysis, was conducted with eight managers in 2023 in Uberlândia, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. We used a semi-structured script with questions about how managers organized women workers' activities before they took their maternity leaves and after their return to work and questions about managers' points of view about breastfeeding and maternity leave.
