Effects of a positive discipline program on parenting outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Parental use of punishment remains a significant concern considering its prevalence and negative impacts on children's well-being. Positive Discipline in Everyday Parenting (PDEP) is a group-based program aimed at helping parents shift away from the use of punitive parenting practices toward positive discipline. OBJECTIVE: This quasi-experimental PDEP evaluation examined self-reported parenting practices in a Canadian sample of 183 parents of children aged 2-6 years. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: There were 101 parents in the experimental condition, and 82 parents in the wait-list co

Parenting stress and child behavior problems: Developmental psychopathology perspectives.

The growing base of research on parenting stress and its relation to child behavior problems has largely paralleled the emergence of developmental psychopathology as a field of inquiry. Specifically, the focus on mechanism rather than main effects has begun to elevate explanatory models in the connection between parenting stress and a variety of adverse child and parent conditions. Still, work on parenting stress is limited by conceptual confusion, the absence of attention to developmental differentiation, a focus on child-specific rather than system influences. Recent research on these parent

Mothers' work conditions, income, and parenting of young children.

OBJECTIVE: In this study, we investigated the interplay of positive work conditions with parenting behaviors across children's first 4 years. BACKGROUND: Most mothers in the United States are employed in paid work during their children's early years. Research typically has focused on the ways that such employment can conflict with the intensive demands of parenting, but it can also help mothers socially and psychologically during this important period of children's development. METHOD: Integrating federal survey data on occupational conditions with parenting reports of job flexibility and pa

Neurodevelopmental, Mental Health, and Parenting Issues in Preterm Infants.

The World Health Organization in its recommendations for the care of preterm infants has drawn attention to the need to address issues related to family involvement and support, including education, counseling, discharge preparation, and peer support. A failure to address these issues may translate into poor outcomes that extend across the lifespan. In this paper, we review the often far-reaching impact of preterm birth on the health and wellbeing of the parents and highlight the ways in which psychological stress may have a negative long-term impact on the parent-child interaction, attachment

Parenting practices during middle adolescence and high school dropout.

INTRODUCTION: Despite inconclusive findings, educational researchers have long considered adequate parenting practices instrumental in preventing high school dropout among adolescents. The present short-term retrospective study focuses on parenting practices during middle adolescence when dropout typically occurs. METHODS: The culturally diverse, high-risk sample of Canadian adolescents (N = 108; Mage = 16.0 years) from low-income neighborhoods included very recent dropouts and matched still-in-school students. A global score reflecting the quality of parenting practices during the period pre

Motherhood reimagined: Experiences of women with SMI surrounding parenting.

OBJECTIVE: Much of the extant literature on women with serious mental illness (SMI) has focused on the risks associated with motherhood, including violence, custody loss, poverty, and homelessness. The present study was conducted to characterize women's broader experiences surrounding the parenting role. METHOD: Twenty women with SMI, both those with and without children, were interviewed. Qualitative data were analyzed using grounded theory approach. RESULTS: Five themes pertaining to the topic of motherhood emerged from the data: motherhood declined, motherhood derailed, motherhood disable

Executive function and parenting in the context of homelessness.

There is mounting evidence that maternal executive function (EF) plays a critical role in parenting behavior. However, the majority of the research on this topic has been conducted in low-risk samples. The purpose of the present study was to investigate whether individual differences in maternal EF are associated with parenting behavior in the high-risk, high adversity context of family homelessness. The study included 94 mothers and their children, ages 4 to 6 years, living in emergency homeless shelters. Mothers completed a battery of "hot" and "cool" EF tasks as well as a self-report questi

Assessing Reflective Parenting in Interaction With School-Aged Children.

The aim of this study was to examine whether it was possible to develop a reliable and valid assessment of reflective parenting implicit in interaction with school-aged children using an adaptation of the Squiggle paradigm developed by Winnicott ( 1968 ) and a manualized coding system (Normandin, Leroux, Ensink, Terradas, & Fonagy, 2015 ). A total of 158 mother-child dyads participated when children were age 5 to 12. Of this group, 89 children had experienced sexual abuse. Interrater reliability using the manualized coding system was excellent. The factor analysis identified a reflective paren

Parenting and Anxiety: Bi-directional Relations in Young Children.

Developmental psychopathologists have long posited a reciprocal relation between parenting behaviors and the development of child anxiety symptoms. Yet, little empirical research has utilized a longitudinal design that would allow exploration of this bi-directional influence. The present study examined the reciprocal relations between parental respect for autonomy, parental hostility, and parental support, and the development of childhood anxiety during a critical developmental period-the transition from preschool to kindergarten and then first grade. Study participants included a community sa

The effectiveness of universal parenting programmes: the CANparent trial.

BACKGROUND: There is substantial evidence for the efficacy and effectiveness of targeted parenting programmes but much less evidence regarding universal parenting programmes. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the CANparent Trial of 12 universal parenting programmes, which were made available to parents of all children aged 0-6 years in three local authorities in England. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study of universal parenting programmes on this scale. METHODS: Parents accessed a voucher, value £100, to attend an accredited programme of pare

Parenting a child with a cleft: the father's perspective.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the impact of having a child born with a cleft lip and/or palate from the father's perspective. DESIGN: Individual qualitative telephone interviews. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 15 fathers of children born with cleft lip and/or palate were recruited throughout the U.K. via advertisements. RESULTS: Supported by a number of subthemes, four overarching themes were identified: variations in care and support; appraisals of the cleft; perceptions of treatment; and looking back and moving forward. CONCLUSIONS: Fathers reported experiences comparable to those previously reported

Savior siblings, parenting and the moral valorization of children.

Philosophy has long been concerned with 'moral status'. Discussions about the moral status of children, however, seem often to promote confusion rather than clarity. Using the creation of 'savior siblings' as an example, this paper provides a philosophical critique of the moral status of children and the moral relevance of parenting and the role that formative experience, regret and relational autonomy play in parental decisions. We suggest that parents make moral decisions that are guided by the moral significance they attach to children, to sick children and most importantly, to a specific s

A Process Model of Parenting and Adolescents' Friendship Competence.

This study examined the prospective relationship between negative parenting behaviors and adolescents' friendship competence in a community sample of 416 two-parent families in the Southeastern USA. Adolescents' externalizing problems and their emotional insecurity with parents were examined as mediators. Parents' psychological control was uniquely associated with adolescents' friendship competence. When both mediators were included in the same model, adolescents' perceptions of emotional insecurity in the parent-adolescent relationship fully mediated the association between parents' psycholog

The relationship between parenting and delinquency: a meta-analysis.

This meta-analysis of 161 published and unpublished manuscripts was conducted to determine whether the association between parenting and delinquency exists and what the magnitude of this linkage is. The strongest links were found for parental monitoring, psychological control, and negative aspects of support such as rejection and hostility, accounting for up to 11% of the variance in delinquency. Several effect sizes were moderated by parent and child gender, child age, informant on parenting, and delinquency type, indicating that some parenting behaviors are more important for particular cont

[Early mother-infant interaction and factors negatively affecting parenting].

The social information-processing model contributes to identifying the psychological processes underlying the construct "sensitivity" in early mother-child interaction. Negative emotional states associated with inadequate self-regulation in coping with stressors affect the mother's attention skills and the processing of the baby's signals. This leads to less synchronous parental practices, particularly unsatisfactory when the baby is unhappy, or crying because the required self-regulation is not provided. This micro-social research studies the sequential profile of maternal reactions to the ba

Neighborhood cohesion as a buffer against hostile maternal parenting.

This study explored the moderating effects of children's neighborhoods on the link between hostile parenting and externalizing behavior. Participants were 1st- or 2nd-grade children in an urban northeastern community. Children were administered the Parenting and Neighborhood scales of the Child Puppet Interview, and mothers completed questionnaires on neighborhood quality and parenting practices. Census tract measures of neighborhood quality and teachers' reports of children's externalizing behavior also were obtained. Results indicated that children's and mothers' perceptions of neighborhood

Maternal panic disorder: infant temperament, neurophysiology, and parenting behaviors.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether 4- and 14-month-old infants of mothers with panic disorder (PD) would be more likely to show differences in temperament, neurophysiology (salivary cortisol and sleep), and relationships with their mothers than controls. METHOD: Two cohorts were recruited: 4-month-old infants with PD mothers (n = 25) and 4-month-old controls (n = 24), and 14-month-old infants with PD mothers (n = 27) and 14-month-old controls (n = 18). Mothers completed diagnostic interviews and questionnaires concerning infant temperament, sleep, and parenting. Infant salivary cortisol samples
