Effect of prenatal alcohol exposure on bony craniofacial development: a mouse MicroCT study.

Craniofacial bone dysmorphology is an important but under-explored potential diagnostic feature of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders. This study used longitudinal MicroCT 3D imaging to examine the effect of prenatal alcohol exposure on craniofacial bone growth in a mouse model. C57BL/6J dams were divided into 3 groups: alcohol 4.2% v/v in PMI® liquid diet (ALC), 2 weeks prior to and during pregnancy from embryonic (E) days 7-E16; pair-fed controls (PF), isocalorically matched to the ALC group; chow controls (CHOW), given ad libitum chow and water. The MicroCT scans were performed on pups on pos

Periosteum-induced ossification effect in skull defect through interleukin-8 and NF-κB pathway: An experimental study with Oryctolagus cuniculus rabbits.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to analyze the response of inflammatory cytokines interleukin-8 (IL-8) and NF-κB to the closure of skull defect with periosteum as a scaffolding material in bone healing used after surgery. METHODS: Thirty Oryctolagus cuniculus rabbits underwent a craniotomy to create a 20 mm diameter round defect in the parietal bones. The parietal bones were returned to its place and stabilized by an internal plate fixation. The defects were either left empty or implanted with periosteum. At 6 weeks, the specimens were euthanized and examined. RESULTS: Histological

A Case of Gorham-Stout Disease Treated with Fistula Closure by Transmeatal Approach.

Gorham-Stout disease, a rare and intractable disease of unknown etiology, causes systemic bone lysis and replacement with lymphoid tissue. Here, we report a case of Gorham-Stout disease with cerebrospinal fluid leakage in a 16-year-old boy. The patient complained of nasal discharge, right ear obstruction, fever, and headache. A computed tomography scan of the head showed osteolysis around the right internal carotid artery, vestibule, and cochlea and osteolytic changes in the left parietal bone. It was suggested that the patient had bacterial meningitis owing to the leakage of cerebrospinal flu

Overexpression of fibroblast growth factor 23 suppresses osteoblast differentiation and matrix mineralization in vitro.

INTRODUCTION: Fibroblast growth factor (FGF)23 is produced primarily in bone and acts on kidney as a systemic phosphaturic factor; high levels result in rickets and osteomalacia. However, it remains unclear whether FGF23 acts locally and directly on bone formation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We overexpressed human FGF23 in a stage-specific manner during osteoblast development in fetal rat calvaria (RC) cell cultures by using the adenoviral overexpression system and analyzed its effects on osteoprogenitor proliferation, osteoid nodule formation, and mineralization. Bone formation was also measured

Cerebral meningioma associated with extensive calvarium osteolysis and presumed intratumoral carcinoma metastasis in a cat.

CASE SUMMARY: A 10-year-old male neutered domestic shorthair cat presented with a 3-month history of weight loss, dysorexia and lethargy. Neurological examination revealed decreased mentation, absent menace response bilaterally and proprioceptive deficits affecting all four limbs; these findings were consistent with a forebrain disorder. Brain CT revealed an extensive asymmetric permeative osteolysis destroying two-thirds of the circumference of the calvarium and involving the right frontal, parietal, temporal and occipital bones, as well as the left parietal bone. This extensive bone lysis wa

Postparietal and prehatching ontogeny of the supraoccipital in Alligator mississippiensis (Archosauria, Crocodylia).

The first record of the postparietal bone of Alligator mississippiensis, documented by transverse histological sections, is presented. It is the first evidence of the presence of this bone within Recent reptiles. The postparietal is present in a specimen with a head length of 32.3 mm. The bone is a small dermal plate lying ventrally and posteriorly to the posterior margin of the parietal and dorsally to the trabecular bone, forming a dorsal surface of the supraoccipital portion of the neural endocranium. The trabecular bone develops perichondrally from the dorsal surface of the tectal cartilag

Spontaneous Epidural Pneumocephalus.

Spontaneous epidural pneumocephalus is a rare condition. The authors reported a 35-year-old male patient with tinnutus, dull headache, and swelling on his head. Patient had a history of head trauma and skull fracture from when he was 5 years old. Cranial computed tomography revealed increase in pneumatization of right mastoid air cells and large epidural air in temporoparietal region. Inner table of right temporal bone got thinner, causing communication of mastoid air cells with epidural space. Epidural air had septations and exerted mass effect on the right parietal lobe with minimal midline

Epidermoid cyst with perforation of the skull.

A rare case of an epidermoid cyst associated with a skull defect is reported. The patient was a 59-year-old healthy woman from Japan who exhibited an elastic, soft, subcutaneous tumor on the left side of the parietal scalp for approximately 10 years without a history of trauma. On radiographic findings, a punched-out lesion was shown. Computed tomography of the cranium revealed a mass on the left parietal side that adhered to the cerebrum through the bone defect. Surgical excision resulted in remission. The tumor was peridurally located and showed no adhesion to the dura mater encephali. Histo

Cranioplasty after Two Giant Intraosseous Angiolipomas of the Cranium: Case Report and Literature Review.

Angiolipomas are rare, benign tumors resulting from the proliferation of adipose tissue and blood vessels, most frequently encountered subcutaneously at the upper limbs and trunk level. Due to their rarity, few cases of intraosseous angiolipomas are presented in the literature. The paper reports a 50-year-old female case with intracranial hypertension syndrome, frontal and parietal headache, nausea, and vomiting symptoms increasing in intensity. A CT exam revealed two hypodense expansive intraosseous formations/lesions. The first one was located in the projection of the frontal bone and the se

Developmental defects in the cranial vault.

The parietal bone seems to be the target for a number of different developmental conditions of the calvaria some of which are congenital whilst others develop in later life. The characteristic radiological patterns of a number of these lesions are described and illustrated, and an attempt is made to correlate the pathology with alterations in bone growth.

Differences in gene expression between the otic capsule and other bones.

Our long term goal is to understand the molecular pathology of otosclerosis and to develop better forms of therapy. Toward this goal, the current study focused on characterizing the molecular factors responsible for the unique biological features of the otic capsule: its minimal rate of remodeling, and lack of healing capacity when fractured. We compared expression levels of 62 genes involved in bone metabolism between the adult murine otic capsule and the tibia and parietal bones; the latter exemplify bones formed by endochondral and intramembranous ossification, respectively. Gene expression

In-utero Diagnosis of Double Encephalocele - Imaging Features and Review of Literature.

Encephalocele is protrusion of brain parenchyma through a defect in the cranium. It is classified into various types based on the defect location: sincipital (fronto-ethmoidal), basal (trans-sphenoidal, spheno-ethmoidal, trans-ethmoidal, and spheno-orbital), occipital and parietal. Double encephaloceles are very rare with only a handful of cases reported in the literature and most of these cases involved either occipital or sub-occipital region. All, except one, cases of double encephaloceles were diagnosed postnatally. We present a case of double encephalocele with parietal and occipital comp

A new device to treat ping-pong skull fractures: The hammer puller technique. A comparative analysis using a realistic simulation model.

BACKGROUND: This study aims to describe a new surgical technique for the treatment of ping-pong skull fractures and to evaluate its efficacy in a realistic simulation model compared to the dissector elevation technique. METHODS: A total of 64 fractures were obtained using 16 model units, each with four fractures (two frontal and two parietal). The hammer puller technique was applied for left-sided fractures and the dissector technique for right-sided fractures. The variables evaluated were fracture repair time, fracture volume, fracture corrected volume, and fracture correction percentage. Fr

[Monostotic fibrous dysplasia of the cranial vault: a case report].

Fibrous dysplasia, when it occurs in the craniofacial region, mostly involves the skull base and is rarely localized in the cranial vault. Although there have been several reports on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of fibrous dysplasia involving the skull base, cases occurring in the cranial vault have seldom been reported. We describe here a rare case of monostotic fibrous dysplasia that occurred in the parietal bone and discuss the characteristics of the MRI findings. A 47-year-old female was admitted to our hospital with a complaint of vertigo. A computed tomography (CT) scan did

Clinical conference I. Calvarium and cranial base in Apert's syndrome: an autopsy report.

A post-mortem examination of a 22-month-old boy with Apert's syndrome is reported. A linear coronal craniectomy performed at 11 months of age had fused completely in spite of the insertion of polyethylene film between the bony edges. Furthermore, progressive synostosis of other cranial sutures was observed. Histological examination of the cranial base showed that the sphenofrontal suture was fused and that the entire cerebral surface, including the sella turcica, was characterized by bone resorption. The sphenooccipital synchondrosis was extremely wide and abnormally shaped, and the chondral g
