BackgroundThe supreme anterior connecting artery (SAConnA) is an exceedingly rare anatomical variant. This artery may interconnect bilateral anterior cerebral arteries (ACAs), yet its existence and clinical implications are scarcely discussed in the literature.Case descriptionA 60-year-old man with no significant past medical or family history presented to our emergency department. He exhibited right homonymous hemianopsia and Gerstmann's syndrome. Cranial computed tomography indicated a left parietal lobar hemorrhage, and digital subtraction angiography revealed a flow-related aneurysm in the

PURPOSE: Post-stroke epilepsy (PSE) is a major late complication of cardioembolic cerebral infarction. However, few studies have examined the epileptogenicity and characteristics of first-occurrence cardioembolic cerebral infarctions.
METHODS: This retrospective study included 93 consecutive patients with old cardioembolic cerebral infarctions who were classified into two groups based on their epileptic history: patients presenting with PSE or stroke without seizure (SWS). Each patient was diagnosed with an epileptic seizure subtype and treated with appropriate anti-epileptic therapy after ad

Introduction: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the leading cause of cognitive decline. Epilepsy is a frequent comorbid condition of AD. While previous studies analyzed the risk factors of AD-related epileptic seizures, we still lack biomarkers of epilepsy in mild AD cases. Purpose: The aim of our study was to analyze the correlations between neuropsychology, cortical thickness, and brain volumetric measurements in mild Alzheimer patients with concomitant epileptic seizures. Materials and methods: We selected mild AD patients from our database to examine them with structural magnetic resonance imagi

In 1954, Penfield and Jasper's findings based on electric stimulation of epileptic patients led them to hypothesize that a sensory representation of the body should be found in the precuneus. They termed this representation the "supplementary sensory" area and emphasized that the exact form of this homunculus could not be specified on the basis of their results. In the decades that followed, their prediction was neglected. The precuneus was found to be involved in numerous motor, cognitive and visual processes, but no work was done on its somatotopic organization. Here, we used a periodic expe

We investigated whether it is possible to study the network dynamics and the anatomical regions involved in the earliest moments of picture naming by using invasive electroencephalogram (EEG) traces to predict naming errors. Four right-handed participants with focal epilepsy explored with extensive stereotactic implant montages that recorded temporal, parietal and occipital regions -in two patients of both hemispheres-named a total of 228 black and white pictures in three different sessions recorded in different days. The subjects made errors that involved anomia and semantic dysphasia, which

The functional complexity of the parietal lobe still represents a challenge for neurophysiological and functional neuroimaging studies. While the somatosensory functions of the anterior parietal cortex are well established, the posterior parietal cortex has a relevant role in processing the sensory information, including visuo-spatial perception, visual attention, visuo-motor transformations and other complex and not completely understood functions. We retrospectively analysed all the clinical manifestations induced by intracerebral bipolar electrical stimulation in 172 patients suffering from

Aspergillosis of the central nervous system is a rare fungal infection that is mainly reported in patients with immune deficiency, such as AIDS patients and organ transplant patients treated with immunosuppressive agents, and is uncommon among patients with intact immune function. We report here a rare case of intracranial aspergillosis in a patient who had previously undergone a parietal lobe tumorectomy. Aspergillus fumigatus was confirmed by histopathology, and susceptibility tests reported that this infection should respond to voriconazole. We believe the immunosuppression resulting from s

BACKGROUND: Adults with alcohol use disorders (AUDs) show different behavioral and neurological functioning during emotional processing tasks from healthy controls. Adults with a family history (FHP) of AUD also show different activation in limbic brain areas, such as the amygdala. However, it is unclear if this pattern exists during adolescence before any episodes of heavy alcohol use.
OBJECTIVES: We hypothesized that the amygdalar response to subliminally-presented fearful faces would be reduced in FHP adolescents compared to peers who were family history negative (FHN) for AUD.
METHOD: An

Use of the vacuum for operative vaginal deliveries has become more favorable with fewer obstetricians and family practitioners trained in the use of forceps. When compared with forcep-assisted deliveries, the vacuum has been associated with a higher incidence of subgaleal hemorrhage (SGH), cephalhematomas, skull and clavicular fractures, Erb's Palsy, intracranial hemorrhage and need for ICN admission. We report the case of an infant who developed a large SGH with midline dural tear and herniation of the medial aspect of the parietal lobes bilaterally in association with a vacuum extraction (VE

Previous authors have described a specific syndrome of coeliac disease, bilateral cerebral calcifications and epileptic seizures. We report a 4-year-old boy with coeliac disease who had bilateral calcifications in the basal ganglia and frontal and parietal lobes, but did not exhibit epileptic seizures.

We report the case of a patient (ATH) who suffered from aphasia, deep dyslexia, and acalculia, following a lesion in her left perisylvian area. She showed a severe impairment in all tasks involving numbers in a verbal format, such as reading aloud, writing to dictation, or responding verbally to questions of numerical knowledge. In contrast, her ability to manipulate non-verbal representations of numbers, i.e., Arabic numerals and quantities, was comparatively well preserved, as evidenced for instance in number comparison or number bisection tasks. This dissociated impairment of verbal and non

We reported a learning-disabled boy, 7-year-old and right handedness, who was similar to developmental Gerstmann syndrome. Dyscalcuria, right-left disorientation, dysgraphia and finger agnosia were correlated with his sequential disorder which was clearly presented by Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children. In this case, a small infarcted lesion was found in the white matter near the left semioval center on MRI. Hypoperfusion of left parietal lobe was also detected by SPECT. The hemisphere dominant in language was assumed to be on the left side by dichotic listening test. We suggested that le

Dyslexia has conventionally been attributed to a left hemisphere deficit affecting language skills. However, it has recently been suggested that two-thirds of dyslexic people have a lesion of the right posterior parietal lobe (RPPL) resulting in poor oculo-motor control. It has been reported that neurological patients with RPPL lesions commonly manifest a neglect of the left side of space and this has also been described in clinical observations of 'visual dyslexics'. We investigated this hypothesis with a sample of 53 dyslexic children and 53 controls using a line-bisection task. In the horiz

AIMS: This study aimed to use stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG) to delineate the anatomo-electro-clinical correlations between seizure semiology and Brodmann area-based functional subregions in parietal lobe epilepsy (PLE), so as to improve the precise localization of seizure onset and the accuracy of presurgical diagnosis.
METHODS: Patients with PLE who underwent SEEG were retrospectively included. Intracranial electrode contacts were localized based on Brodmann area (BA) anatomical divisions. Seizure semiology and ictal SEEG evolution were systematically quantified using a predefined scor

Visual short-term memory (VSTM) and attention are distinct yet interrelated processes. While both require selection of information across the visual field, memory additionally requires the maintenance of information across time and distraction. VSTM recruits areas within human (male and female) dorsal and ventral parietal cortex that are also implicated in spatial selection; therefore, it is important to determine whether overlapping activation might reflect shared attentional demands. Here, identical stimuli and controlled sustained attention across both tasks were used to ask whether fMRI si

Accurately describing the anatomy of individual brains enables interlaboratory communication of functional and developmental studies and is crucial for possible surgical interventions. The human parietal lobe participates in multimodal sensory integration including language processing and also contains the primary somatosensory area. We describe detailed protocols to subdivide the parietal lobe, analyze morphological and volumetric characteristics, and create probabilistic atlases in MNI152 stereotaxic space. The parietal lobe was manually delineated on 3D T1 MR images of 30 healthy subjects a

Exercise is increasingly recommended as an essential component of stroke rehabilitation, yet uncertainty remains with respect to its direct effect on the cerebral vasculature. The current study first demonstrated the repeatability of pseudo-continuous arterial spin labeling (ASL) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in older adults with stroke, and then investigated the change in cerebrovascular function following a 6-month cardiovascular rehabilitation program. In the repeatability study, 12 participants at least 3 months post-stroke underwent two ASL imaging scans 1 month apart. In the prospecti

Anarchic hand syndrome (AHS) is characterized by goal-directed movements performed without volitional control (agency). Different AHS subtypes have been identified; however, few studies have examined the posterior subtype. We report a case of AHS following right-hemisphere parietal damage, with left-sided somatosensory and proprioceptive impairment. Agency was examined for nonanarchic (volitional) movements performed using the anarchic hand. The patient experienced abnormal agency for movements whether motor intention and visual feedback were congruent or incongruent, but not when intention wa
