Neuroblastomas are the most common extracranial solid malignancy in children. In contrast, salivary gland tumors are uncommon in children, accounting for only 1% of all pediatric neoplasms. Parotid metastases are rare; only two cases of parotid metastases from neuroblastomas have been reported with an emphasis on the pathology. We present a case of a parotid metastasis from a neuroblastoma with in-depth description and discussion of its ultrasound (US), computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) appearances.

OBJECTIVE: Assessment of benign and malignant lesions of the parotid gland, including metastatic lesions, is challenging with current imaging methods. Fluorine-18 FDG PET/CT is a noninvasive imaging modality that provides both anatomic and metabolic information. Semiquantitative data obtained from PET/CT, also known as PET/CT parameters, are maximum, mean, or peak standardized uptake values (SUVs); metabolic tumor volume; total lesion glycolysis; standardized added metabolic activity; and normalized standardized added metabolic activity. Our aim was to determine whether FDG PET/CT parameters c

OBJECTIVE: To test the validity of the reported high incidence (50%) of malignancy in neoplasms of the submandibular salivary gland, and to compare it with that of the parotid gland.
METHODS: This is a retrospective analysis of major salivary gland neoplasms in 127 patients who were treated between August 1988 and December 2004 (15 1/2 years) at Kalafong Hospital, Pretoria.
RESULTS: All but 1 of the patients were black. There were 100 benign and 27 malignant tumours. Thirty tumours were in the submandibular gland, including 3 malignant tumours, i.e. 10%. Of 97 parotid gland tumours, 24 (24.7

We are presenting a case of a 74-year-old female with a parotid gland mass. Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) of the mass demonstrated cohesive groups of epithelial cells with overall bland-appearing nuclei and abundant vacuolated cytoplasm, consistent with sebaceous cells, in a background of polymorphous lymphocytes, scattered histiocytes, and adipose tissue. Immunostains showed that the epithelial cells stain positive for p63, but negative for CD117 and DOG-1. CD3 and CD20 showed a mixture of T- and B-cells. On the PAP-stained slides, there were numerous sac-like structures, consistent with myosp

Superficial angiomyxoma (SA) is a rare benign cutaneous neoplasm first described by Allen et al in 1988. To the best of our knowledge, we report the first case of superficial angiomyxoma located in the parotid region. We also stress the importance of distinguishing this entity from other lesions that may be involved in this location such as cutaneous neoplasms, parotid tumours or cysts. We emphasise the need to rule out the Carney complex, which has been associated with these tumours.

Basal cell adenoma is a rare type of monomorphic salivary adenoma most commonly involving the parotid gland. Cytology of basal cell adenoma closely mimics many other benign and malignant basaloid neoplasms. Cytological features of membranous basal cell adenoma simulate adenoid cystic carcinoma in fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) smears. Here, we are presenting a rare case of cytodiagnosis of membranous basal cell adenoma of parotid gland in an elderly lady, which mimicked adenoid cystic carcinoma on FNAC. We discuss the cytomorphology of this rare case with an emphasis on cytological dif

Lymphadenomas (sebaceous and nonsebaceous types) of the salivary glands are extremely uncommon benign neoplasms. There are rare published reports of cytopathologic characteristics of "nonsebaceous lymphadenomas" of the parotid gland. We report herein, the case of an 80-year-old female who was evaluated at The Johns Hopkins Hospital for a 4.0 cm, nontender, mobile asymptomatic left parotid mass present for 3 months. An ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration revealed a uniform population of cohesive basaloid-type cells associated with scant myxoid stroma and was interpreted as "epithelioid neo

Sebaceous lymphadenoma is a rare, benign tumor of the parotid gland accounting for only 0.196% of all adenomas of the parotid gland. Our aim is to present a case of sebaceous lymphadenoma, which has been rapidly enlarging over a period of few months in an immunocompromised patient. This presentation is unusual for a benign salivary gland neoplasm. A 55-year-old female who is a known case of systemic lupus erythromatous, antiphospholipid syndrome, and lupus nephritis, which have been treated by cyclophosphamide, presented with a 2-year complaint of fluctuating painless right parotid swelling, o

Oncocytoma of the parotid gland is a rare benign salivary gland neoplasm, accounting for less than 2% of all salivary tumors. Bilateral parotid oncocytoma is an exceedingly rare entity that can mimic other salivary gland neoplasms on imaging. We report the case of a 72-year-old woman who underwent 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography-computed tomography (FDG PET-CT) for evaluation of unexplained weight loss and altered bowel habits. Imaging revealed incidentally detected, well-defined, FDG-avid masses within the deep lobes of both parotid glands. A CT-guided core needle biopsy w

Patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection have been reported to have parotid swellings of various types such as diffuse infiltrative lymphocytosis syndrome, parotitis, intraparotid lymphadenopathy, benign lymphoepithelial cyst (BLEC), as well as salivary gland neoplasms such as adenoid cystic carcinoma, Kaposi sarcoma and lymphoma. LECs in the parotid gland are uncommon benign entities with increased incidence associated with HIV infection. We are presenting a case of 28-year-old HIV-positive patient with BLECs in the parotid and submandibular glands.

Lipomatosis of the parotid gland is a very rare tumour and its discovery in a child is exceptional. These tumours are not generally considered in the preoperative differential diagnosis of parotid region neoplasms because of their rarity. The treatment of choice is surgical excision, with a superficial or total parotidectomy, preserving the facial nerve. Long-term follow-up is advised due to possible microscopic infiltration. A case of lipomatosis of the parotid gland in a 4-month-old child is reported.

BACKGROUND: Small cell carcinoma is a highly aggressive neoplasm that commonly arises in the lungs. The occurrence of this tumor in the salivary gland, particularly the parotid gland, is extremely rare, accounting for less than 1% of all cases of malignant parotid gland tumors, and is associated with poor prognosis. Owing to its rarity, there remains no consensus on standardized therapeutic protocols.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 58-year-old woman presented with a 4-month history of a progressively enlarging left preauricular mass and was ultimately diagnosed with small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (

Accessory parotid tumours are rare, accounting for less than 10% of parotid neoplasms. Although similar tumours affect both the accessory parotid and parotid, accessory parotid tumours are associated with higher rates of malignancy. Surgery is first line management. Standard surgical management involves a similar approach to superficial parotidectomy, despite the anterior location of these lesions. This approach requires extensive subcutaneous access and facial nerve dissection and therefore, poses significant risk. It can also result in poor cosmetic result due to scarring and Frey's Syndrome

The cysts of the parotid gland are very rare lesions of congenital or acquired aetiopathogenesis. In most cases, the symptom is an unilateral painless swelling in the area of the parotid without any fixation to the overlying skin or any involvement of the facial nerve. These must be distinguished from neoplasms with a similar clinical presentation or neoplasms with a cystic component. Making the right preoperative diagnosis can be extremely difficult but the adequate therapy remains the superficial parotidectomy. However the final diagnosis is established histopathologically. The precise histo

Oncocytomas in the parotid gland are a rare benign neoplasm composed of mitochondrial-rich oncocytes. Here we present the case of an 85-year-old man with a history of biopsy-proven right parotid gland oncocytoma who underwent 99mTc-sestamibi scintigraphy and SPECT/CT in the context of primary hyperparathyroidism. Focal intense uptake of radiotracer is detected within the right parotid gland on sestamibi scintigraphy. SPECT/CT confirms the localization of sestamibi uptake to the hyperattenuating parotid gland oncocytoma.

INTRODUCTION: Tumors of the salivary glands are uncommon and represent 2-4% of head and neck neoplasms. Most tumors originate in the parotid gland, from which 10 to 15% are found to be malignant. Different methods of surgical treatment can be performed depending on the type, localization and size of tumor.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Retrospective analysis of the medical data of 138 patients with parotid gland tumors who where treated in our departament between 1997-2007 was done.
RESULTS: There were 74 women and 64 men. Benign tumors were found in 104 patients with the pleomorphic adenoma as the

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to describe the clinical and imaging characteristics of malignant neoplasms of the parotid gland in patients who had been successfully treated for childhood cancer.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eight cases of parotid carcinoma were identified among survivors of primary childhood cancer treated at two centers. Medical records and imaging studies were reviewed to identify the frequency of second parotid tumors, to assess possible risk factors for their development, and to identify any specific MR or CT features of these tumors.
RESULTS: Parotid tumors (mucoep

Salivary duct carcinoma (SDC) is one of the most aggressive salivary gland carcinomas. Heterotopic ossification (HO) is the formation of mature bone in non-skeletal tissues. HO can occur in a number of neoplastic lesions. However, its occurrence is markedly rare in salivary gland neoplasms and to the best of our knowledge, SDC with HO has not yet been reported. Therefore, the present report describes the first reported case of SDC with HO in the parotid gland and reviews the clinicopathological features of salivary gland neoplasms with HO.
