Sequelae of a Rare Case of Penetrating Parotid Gland Injury: Ultrasound and Magnetic Resonance Imaging Features.

Parotid gland trauma is a rare condition due to the anatomical location of the parotid gland. Imaging of the parotid gland trauma is restricted to ultrasound (US), sialogram, and computed tomography scans in the published literature. We present a case of penetrating parotid gland injury caused by a fishhook. The foreign object was removed under local anesthesia and the patient was managed conservatively with antibiotics and tetanus toxoid vaccine. A swelling appeared in the left parotid region after two weeks that was diagnosed using US and magnetic resonance imaging as granulation tissue form

Diverse clinical presentations of tubercular parotitis in children: case series with review of literature.

Tuberculosis of the parotid gland is a rare entity in children. Manifestations can vary from acute parotitis to indolent benign parotid lesions, abscesses and fistulas in the parotid region. Diagnosis is challenging in the absence of constitutional symptoms and essentially non-contributory test reports. We discuss a series of six cases of parotid tuberculosis in children with different clinical presentations and management and review the literature on the subject.

First Bite Syndrome After Parotidectomy: A Case Series and Review of Literature.

INTRODUCTION: First bite syndrome (FBS) is a rare but potentially debilitating complication observed after surgery involving the upper cervical region. Patients classically complain of severe facial pain in the ipsilateral parotid region with the first few bites of a meal. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to shed light on the incidence and potential risk factors of FBS, including a series of cases depicting FBS observed after parotidectomy. METHODS: Retrospective review of 419 patients who underwent parotidectomy at a single tertiary care facility between December 2016 and June 2020. RES

Case of Suspected Sialodochitis Fibrinosa (Kussmaul's Disease).

Here we report a case of Kussmaul's disease, or sialodochitis fibrinosa. This rare disease is characterized by recurrent swelling of the salivary glands, which then discharge clots of fibrin into the oral cavity. An 80-year-old man with a history of allergic rhinitis visited our department with the chief complaint of pain in the bilateral parotid gland area on eating. An initial examination revealed mild swelling and tenderness in this region, and indurations could be felt around the bilateral parotid papillae. Pressure on the parotid glands induced discharge of gelatinous plugs from the parot

Relations of the facial nerve with the retromandibular vein: anatomic study of 132 parotid glands.

BACKGROUND: The retromandibular vein (rmv) is an important anatomical element, in radiology to localise a tumor in the parotid gland in relation to the facial nerve, and in surgery as a landmark to dissect the facial nerve and its branches. The aim of this study was to give a precise description of the anatomic variations of the relations of the facial nerve with the rmv. METHODS: One hundred and thirty-two parotid glands have been dissected by pre-auricular route. The rmv, the facial nerve trunk and its branches have been dissected and described. The relations of the facial nerve with the rm

Preauricular transcondylar approach for basal cell adenoma of parotid coexist with ganglion cyst of the ipsilateral temporomandibular joint.

The concurrence of 2 independent neoplasias in the ipsilateral parotid and the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) region was infrequently reported. In this article, we present a unique case characterized by the coexistence of a rare salivary gland tumor, basal cell adenoma, of the parotid gland with a ganglion cyst in the ipsilateral TMJ region. A special surgical procedure was also presented here using a modified preauricular incision and transcondylar approach for extracapsular dissection of both lesions. Previously published literature are about the traditional treatment of benign parotid tumors

Metastatic Neuroendocrine Tumors to Parotid Gland: Where Do They Come From?

Background. Metastasis to parotid gland occurs mostly from skin cancers of the head and neck region. Metastatic neuroendocrine tumors to the parotid gland are rare and not well studied so far. In this study, we undertook a retrospective review of secondary neuroendocrine tumors of the parotid diagnosed in our institution. The most common entities, primary tumor locations, their clinical presentations and histopathological features were analyzed. Methods. Cases of secondary neuroendocrine tumors to parotid diagnosed from August 1995 to Jan 2021 were retrieved from our institution's pathology da

Metastasis of Clear Cell Renal Cell Carcinoma to the Parotid Gland: A Case Report.

Parotid gland metastases from distant primary malignancies are uncommon and present diagnostic challenges for clinicians. We present the case of a 65-year-old male with a history of clear cell subtype of renal cell carcinoma who presented with a painless swelling in the right parotid region. His medical history was significant for a right-sided renal cell carcinoma, for which he had undergone a radical nephrectomy five years ago. The patient's physical examination revealed a firm, non-tender mass in the right parotid gland region. Imaging studies, including ultrasound and contrast-enhanced com

Large First Branchial Cyst Extending into the Parapharyngeal Space: A Case Report.

Cystic diseases of the salivary gland include mucous cysts and plunging ranula; cysts in the parotid region are rare. In this report, we describe a case of a first branchial cyst in the parotid region. The cyst extended into the parapharyngeal space and was repeatedly infected. The patient was a 35-year-old woman who presented to our hospital with a mass on the left lower ear. Imaging findings revealed a cystic lesion in the parotid region that extended to the parapharyngeal space. A yellowish slurry was aspirated on a percutaneous fine-needle aspiration biopsy. Cytology revealed a class II tu

Morphometric study of the microvasculature of the main excretory duct subepithelia of the rat parotid, submandibular and sublingual salivary glands.

This study investigated the relationship between the fine structure of the main excretory duct (MED) epithelia and the subepithelial capillaries of the major salivary glands (parotid, submandibular, and sublingual) in the rat. The MED subepithelial capillaries vary in type (fenestrated and continuous), number of fenestrae present in the available fenestrated endothelium (the attenuated area of endothelium), and number of capillaries per unit length of epithelium. In the parotid gland, continuous capillaries predominate, and the capillary density per 200 microns of epithelium (1.73 in region I

Parotid gland and facial nerve trauma: a retrospective review.

Included in this study are all patients with trauma to the parotid region seen at our center from 1979 to 1989. There was a total of five patients with injury to the parotid area: two patients with isolated facial nerve injury; one with isolated parotid duct injury; two with combined duct and nerve injury. There were four males and one female, with a mean age of 34 years (range, 16 to 62 years). The three patients with parotid duct injury required other procedures for associated trauma. A total of eight nerve branches were severed in four patients. Seven of the eight nerve branches (82.5%) wer

Synchronous bilateral multifocal acinic cell carcinoma of parotid gland: case report and review of the literature.

A 55-year-old woman presented with a 2-year history of slow growing painless masses in both sides of the preauricular area. Ultrasound scanning of the bilateral parotid region revealed multiple tumors in both sides of the parotid gland. After superficial parotidectomy, selective neck dissection of levels II and III were performed on the left side of the parotid gland, and superficial parotidectomy was performed on the right side. Histopathologic examination revealed both of the sides of parotid gland tumors to be acinic cell carcinoma. We discuss the clinicopathologic findings of synchronous b

First branchial cleft cysts presenting as parotid tumors.

Masses of the parotid gland region can be caused by a variety of different conditions, most commonly neoplasms of a benign or malignant nature. A rare cause for parotid tumors is the embryonologic remnant of first branchial cleft cysts. We reviewed branchial cysts for a 10-year period at the three teaching hospitals in Akron, OH. First branchial cleft cysts, or parotid lympho-epithelial cysts, were found to be a very rare condition presenting as parotid tumors. The surgeon should always be aware of these cysts as a possibility in the differential diagnosis of parotid masses in the infant and a

Parotid duct foreign body in a dog diagnosed with CT.

A 12 mo old castrated male German shorthaired pointer was referred with a 3 mo history of a recurrent left-sided facial swelling. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) combined with a positive contrast sialogram revealed the presence of a thick-walled dilated region of the left parotid duct and a normal appearance of the parotid gland. The affected parotid duct, complete with grass seed foreign body, was surgically removed under general anesthesia, and the parotid duct was ligated leaving the parotid gland in situ. Twelve mo later, the dog was doing well with no reported complications.

Rheumatoid Nodule Simulating a Parotid Tumor.

Rheumatoid nodules are an extra-articular manifestation of rheumatoid arthritis that are rarely found in the maxillofacial region. A 59-year-old woman with rheumatoid arthritis treated with methotrexate, leflunomide, and tocilizumab, presented with an enlarging mass in the left parotid region. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) displayed a lesion compatible with a neoplasm. However, an incisional biopsy showed features consistent with a rheumatoid nodule. The patient was managed conservatively, including cessation of methotrexate and initiation of treatment with hydroxychloroquine. At 15-month f
