Impact of particulate matter 2.5 on a mouse model of lung adenocarcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Over the years, lung cancer incidence in never-smokers has been rising. Air pollution is a non-smoking-related factor that promotes lung cancer progression. Particulate matter 2.5 (PM2.5) is a component of air pollution that is associated with a type 2 immune response mediated by group 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2) and T helper 2 (Th2) cells. Furthermore, PM2.5 can activate fibroblasts, induce the secretion of collagen, and contribute to the development of lung fibrosis. Although type 2 immune response and lung fibrosis are described as pro-tumorigenic in lung cancer, whether PM2.

Effects of changes in fat metabolism by particulate matter on endometrium and infertility.

Particulate matter (PM) exposure has been increasingly linked to metabolic and reproductive disorders, yet the mechanisms through which PM-related metabolic alterations influence endometrial function remain incompletely understood. In this study, female C57BL/6 mice were fed a normocaloric diet or high-fat diet (HFD) with or without PM exposure for 12 weeks. Body weight, fertility outcomes, and molecular alterations were assessed in visceral adipose tissue (VAT) and endometrial tissue (EMT). In parallel, 3T3-L1 adipocytes were co-cultured with primary human endometrial cells to examine adipocy

Investigation of tuberculosis incidence and particulate matter concentration in the middle east.

Air pollution is the fifth and sixth leading risk factor for global mortality and reduced life expectancy. Studies have established a link between atmospheric pollution and the incidence, hospitalization, and mortality rates of pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB). The city of Zabol has experienced persistent dust storms for several years, with an average annual PM10 concentration of 206 µg/m³-more than nine times the permissible limit. The results of this study indicate a significant correlation between increased PM10 levels and the incidence of tuberculosis. To model the disease, machine learning (M

Study of the interactions of sneezing droplets with particulate matter in a polluted environment.

We have performed a three-dimensional numerical simulation to determine the effect of local atmospheric pollution level on the spreading characteristics of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) virus through ejected droplets during sneezing and coughing in an open space. Utilizing a finite volume-based numerical method, we have performed computations for various ranges of droplet diameters and sneezing speeds. The interactions between the droplets and the suspended particles are considered by taking both hydrophobic and hydrophilic wettability characteristics into ac

An assessment on variation of sulphur dioxide and particulate matter in Erzurum (Turkey).

Sulphur dioxide and PM10 levels are investigated in Erzurum during the periods of 1990-2000 heating season to assess air pollution level. For that reason, emissions of sulphur dioxide and particulate matter were calculated by using consumption of fuels and Turkish emission factors. These emission values were evaluated together with air pollution levels, which were measured at six stations in Erzurum atmosphere during 1990-2000 winter periods. Results reveal that in 1990-1994 heating period, there is an increasing trend in the emissions and air pollution levels over Erzurum, and the air quality

Uptake and transfer of particulate matter from the peritoneal cavity of the rat.

1. Colloidal mercuric sulfide or thorium dioxide injected intraperitoneally passes into the cytoplasm of the mesothelium of the mesentery and of the diaphragm as early as 15 to 30 minutes after the injection. 2. Between 15 minutes and 12(1/2) hours the number of particles within the mesothelial cells increases as the time between injection and termination of the experiment is lengthened. 3. The particulate matter is usually localized in the cytoplasm within clear vacuoles or bodies having a relatively dense matrix. 4. A greater quantity of the absorbed material is commonly observed within the

Effects of Particulate Matter on the Risk of Gestational Hypertensive Disorders and Their Progression.

Associations between particulate matter (PM) and gestational hypertensive disorders (GHDs) are well documented, but there is no evidence on the associations between PM and GHD progression, especially among those with assisted reproductive technology (ART) conceptions. To explore the effects of PM on the risk of GHDs and their progression among pregnant women with natural or ART conception, we enrolled 185,140 pregnant women during 2014-2020 in Shanghai and estimated the associations during different periods using multivariate logistic regression. During the 3 months of preconception, 10 μg/m3

Exploring the impact of particulate matter on mortality in coastal Mediterranean environments.

Air pollution is one of the most important problems the world is facing nowadays, adversely affecting public health and causing millions of deaths every year. Particulate matter is a criteria pollutant that has been linked to increased morbidity, as well as all-cause and cause-specific mortality. However, this association remains under-investigated in smaller-size cities in the Eastern Mediterranean, which are also frequently affected by heat waves and dust storms. This study explores the impact of particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter ≤ 10 μm (PM10) and ≤ 2.5 μm (PM2.5) on mortality

The Effects of Particulate Matter on C57BL/6 Peritoneal and Alveolar Macrophages.

The presence of ambient particulate matter (PM) poses more dangers to human health than that of other common air pollutants such as Carbon dioxide (Co2) and ozone.  Epidemiologic studies show a direct correlation between PM and the risk of respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. The immune system seems to play a critical role in the process of these diseases. The main goal of this study was to investigate the effect of Tehran particulate matter in two aerodynamic diameters (PM2.5 and PM10) on alveolar macrophages (AM) from C57/BL6 mice. To evaluate the inflammatory effects of PMs, cultured al

Azaarenes in fine particulate matter from the atmosphere of a Chinese megacity.

Azaarenes (AZAs) are toxicologically relevant organic compounds with physicochemical properties that are significantly different from the well-studied polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). However, little is known about their concentrations, seasonal variations, fate, and relationship with PAHs in air. This paper reports the temporal variations in the concentrations and composition patterns of AZAs in PM2.5 that was sampled once per 6 days from outdoor air of Xi'an, China from July 2008 to August 2009. The concentrations of the ∑AZAs, quinoline (QUI), benzo[h]quinoline (BQI), and acridine (

Exposure to airborne particulate matter in the ambient, indoor, and occupational environments.

Exposure to airborne particulate matter results in various adverse health effects. Unlike other pollutants, such as ozone, sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, and oxides of nitrogen, for which there is significant exposure, particulate matter exposure is much more complex because it is not a single chemical species or even a limited number of chemical species. Particulate matter includes various chemical species in particles having a wide range of diameters and shapes that have widely varying toxicities. People are exposed to particles in the ambient environment, in indoor spaces, and in the occu

Fine particulate matter and wheezing illnesses in the first year of life.

BACKGROUND: Recent evidence implicates fine particulate matter (PM2.5), principally from vehicular exhaust, as a major cause of increased mortality and morbidity. However, there are limited data on the impact of PM2.5 on infant respiratory illnesses. METHODS: We conducted a cohort study of 504 infants recruited at 4 months of age from primary health care units in southeastern Santiago, Chile. Project physicians followed infants through the first year of life via monthly check-ups and by appointments on demand. We obtained data for fine particulate matter, sulfur dioxide (SO2), and nitrogen di

White matter pathology in alzheimer's transgenic mice with chronic exposure to low-level ambient fine particulate matter.

BACKGROUND: Air pollution, especially fine particulate matter (PM), can cause brain damage, cognitive decline, and an increased risk of neurodegenerative disease, especially alzheimer's disease (AD). Typical pathological findings of amyloid and tau protein accumulation have been detected in the brain after exposure in animal studies. However, these observations were based on high levels of PM exposure, which were far from the WHO guidelines and those present in our environment. In addition, white matter involvement by air pollution has been less reported. Thus, this experiment was designed to

Exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) hampers myelin repair in a mouse model of white matter demyelination.

Epidemiological studies show a strong association between exposure to air pollution - and particularly to particulate matter (PM) -, increased prevalence of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and higher rates of hospital admissions for MS and MS relapses. Besides having immunomodulatory effects and sustaining a systemic oxidative-inflammatory response, PM may participate in MS pathogenesis by targeting also Central Nervous System (CNS)-specific processes, such as myelin repair. Here we show that, in a mouse model of lysolecithin-induced demyelination of the subcortical white matter, post-injury exposure
