General practitioners' views about the need for a stress support service.

OBJECTIVES: We wished to determine general practitioners' (GPs') views regarding the need for a stress support service. METHOD: A postal questionnaire survey of GPs' views (n = 274) about the need for a stress support service, and what form such a service might take, was undertaken on Tyneside. RESULTS: A response rate of 79.5% was achieved with one reminder. A majority (78.8%) were in favour of a stress support service for GPs, the most popular options for the service being independently accessed counsellors and stress management groups. Over 90% of respondents thought that support should b

INTRODUCTION: In a context in which institutions recommend addressing health challenges through patient engagement, we have chosen to develop and pilot a territorial support unit dedicated to recovery from addiction, in partnership with people directly affected by addictive disorders. METHOD: To co-design and experiment this unit, strategic hypotheses (regarding criteria for identifying patient partners, methods, etc.) were explicitly formulated to assess their alignment with best practice recommendations and their relevance in practice. To identify and characterize learnings, qualitative int

Leveraging brain science for impactful advocacy and policymaking: The synergistic partnership between developmental cognitive neuroscientists and a parent-led grassroots movement to drive dyslexia prevention policy and legislation.

Reading proficiency is crucial for academic, vocational, and economic success and has been closely linked to health outcomes. Unfortunately, in the United States, a concerning 63% of fourth-grade children are reading below grade level, with approximately 7%-10% exhibiting a disability in word reading, developmental dyslexia. Research in developmental cognitive neuroscience indicates that individuals with dyslexia show functional and structural brain alterations in regions processing reading and reading-related information, with some of these differences emerging as early as preschool and even

Design and implementation of a Community Expert Group comprised of people with lived expertise of homelessness at an academic health research center: a program description and analysis of challenges.

The involvement of communities with a stake in healthcare research is often limited, and attempts to increase their participation and to create shared decision-making partnerships are often hindered by structural barriers. In this paper, we describe the design and implementation of a Community Expert Group comprised of people with lived expertise of homelessness at an academic health research center. We detail the group's model, guiding principles, governance structure, and activities, and discuss institutional challenges encountered over the course of this partnership. We report that the lack

Strengthening operational research to complement Global Fund grants for HIV, TB and malaria in Sierra Leone.

This issue of Public Health Action (PHA) includes the first of a series of articles that provide evidence-based answers to questions raised by health workers on addressing HIV, TB and malaria on the frontlines in Sierra Leone. The research was conducted as part of a SORT IT course, which is a partnership-based initiative led by TDR and implemented with various partners. SORT IT aims to make countries 'data rich, information rich and action rich' to improve health care delivery and outcomes. The course in Sierra Leone brought together 19 institutions to foster global engagement, partnerships an

A University-Military Partnership to Establish a Quality Assurance and Training System to Sustain the FAIR System for Determining Incidents of Family Maltreatment in the US Army.

Congress mandates that each military service maintain a central registry to monitor the frequency of maltreatment incidents by service and installation across time. For over two decades, the Family Translational Research Group (FTRG; Co-directors: Amy Slep and Richard Heyman) at New York University has partnered with military Family Advocacy Programs (FAPs) to ensure that partner and child maltreatment determinations are fair and consistent. This collaboration resulted in the Field-Tested Assessment, Intervention-Planning, and Response (FAIR) system-an evidence-based practice mandated across a

Twenty Years in the Making: Government, University, and Community Partnership to Advance School Mental Health.

School-based mental health (SBMH) services are a critical strategy for addressing the mental health crisis affecting approximately 28% of US youth; however, persistent challenges remain, including funding constraints, workforce shortages, and difficulty sustaining initiatives amid shifting policy priorities and limited institutional support. This paper chronicles a 20-year government-university-community partnership in Seattle and King County, Washington, illustrating how sustained cross-sector collaboration can address these barriers. The partnership between Public Health of Seattle & King Co

Improving Pediatric Bronchiolitis Care: Optimizing Nasal Suctioning in Community Emergency Departments.

Community emergency departments see the majority of children receiving emergency care. However, each of these emergency departments may only see a small volume of pediatric patients per day, often leaving staff uncomfortable when caring for sick infants. By forming partnerships between an academic pediatric emergency department and community emergency departments, we sought to improve the clinical skills of community staff caring for infants with bronchiolitis, a common pediatric presentation. We created a training module that summarizes evidence-based best practices for bronchiolitis manageme

Opening minds in Canada: background and rationale.

OBJECTIVE: To summarize the background and rationale of the approach taken by the Mental Health Commission of Canada's Opening Minds (OM) Anti-Stigma Initiative. METHOD: The approach taken by OM incorporates a grassroots, community development philosophy, has clearly defined target groups, uses contact-based education as the central organizing element across interventions, and has a strong evaluative component, so that best practices can be identified, replicated, and disseminated. Contact-based education occurs when people who have experienced a mental illness share their personal story of r

Coalitions as Prevention Infrastructure for Youth Substance Use: Coordinated, Local Relevance, and Sustainability.

CONTEXT: Youth substance use remains a preventable public health issue, yet substantial proportions of US adolescents continue to report substance use. Despite advances in prevention, the substance use landscape continues to evolve, and disparities persist, underscoring the need for strategies that address the social, environmental, and structural factors influencing youth substance use. OBJECTIVE: To outline the conceptual rationale for community partnerships in youth substance use prevention, summarize evidence supporting coalition- and partnership-based prevention systems, and demonstrate,

Injecting-related trust, cooperation, intimacy, and power as key factors influencing risk perception among drug injecting partnerships.

Sharing of injection drug use paraphernalia is a dyadic process linked to the transmission of HIV and hepatitis C virus (HCV). Despite this, limited research exists identifying specific dyadic interpersonal factors driving injecting partners' engagement in needle/syringe and ancillary injecting equipment sharing among young adults. Using semi-structured in-depth interview data collected between 2014 and 2015 from twenty-seven people who inject drugs (PWID), we applied an inductive approach to identify key injection drug-related interpersonal factors and developed a conceptual model integrating

Public-private partnerships for health: their main targets, their diversity, and their future directions.

The global burden of disease, especially the part attributable to infectious diseases, disproportionately affects populations in developing countries. Inadequate access to pharmaceuticals plays a role in perpetuating this disparity. Drugs and vaccines may not be accessible because of weak distribution infrastructures or because development of the desired products has been neglected. This situation can be tackled with push interventions to lower the costs and risks of product development for industry, with pull interventions providing economic and market incentives, and with the creation of inf

Sexuality, sexual practices, and HIV risk among incarcerated African-American women in North Carolina.

BACKGROUND: Women who have been in prison carry a greater lifetime risk of HIV for reasons that are not well understood. This effect is amplified in the Southeastern United States, where HIV incidence and prevalence is especially high among African-American (AA) women. The role of consensual sexual partnerships in the context of HIV risk, especially same-sex partnerships, merits further exploration. METHODS: We conducted digitally recorded qualitative interviews with 29 AA women (15 HIV positive, 14 HIV negative) within 3 months after entry into the state prison system. We explored potential

Connection and collaboration: Reflections on power, safety, and risk.

Occupational therapy in Australia is experiencing growth and demand in ways that have not been seen before in this country. There are over 32,000 registered occupational therapists and more than 7000 students studying occupational therapy at one of 50 accredited programs in 26 different universities. Indeed, I contend that occupational therapy is more valued and in demand than at any other time in its history. There is the opportunity for the profession to capitalise on the current value and demand, yet many occupational therapists are reporting distress and burnout and a sense of disconnectio

The elements of nursing ... all but unknown.

In summing up, I have explored briefly some notions on the elements of nursing through the theme of partnership with the public and with others involved in health care. These notions, which are by no means exclusive, have centred around five main areas; Firstly, the unique personal characteristics demanded by the closeness of sustained contact with patients and clients; Secondly, the primacy of the patient's and the public's needs in defining nursing or any other health care profession; Thirdly, the need for nursing both individually and organisationally to look outwards and engage with the wi

Keeping communities at the centre of efforts to eliminate lymphatic filariasis: learning from the past to reach a future free of lymphatic filariasis.

Since the launch of the Global Programme to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis (GPELF) in 2000, more than 910 million people have received preventive chemotherapy for lymphatic filariasis (LF) and many thousands have received care for chronic manifestations of the disease. To achieve this, millions of community drug distributors (CDDs), community members and health personnel have worked together each year to ensure that at-risk communities receive preventive chemotherapy through mass drug administration (MDA). The successes of 20 y of partnership with communities is celebrated, including the appli

The Views and Experiences of Families and Registered Nurses Regarding Hospital Care and Support of Children With Intellectual Disabilities: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Children with intellectual disabilities experience poorer health outcomes and persistent inequities in hospital care. No previous review has integrated perspectives of families, registered nurses (RNs), nursing students and nurse educators to examine how family partnerships, workforce preparation and clinical practice intersect. This review synthesises evidence on hospital care and support for children with intellectual disabilities. METHODS: Following PRISMA guidelines, four databases (CINAHL, MEDLINE, APA PsycINFO and Embase) were searched from inception to October 2025. Study q

Public-Private Partnerships in tuberculosis service delivery in Somalia: a qualitative analysis.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis remains a major public health challenge in Somalia, where a fragile health system and reliance on private providers complicate care. Although Public-Private Partnerships are globally recognized for strengthening TB services, their role and implementation in Somalia's conflict-affected context are not well understood. This study aimed to explore the role, challenges, and opportunities of Public-Private Partnerships in delivering TB services in Somalia, generating evidence to inform policy and practice. METHODS: A qualitative exploratory study was conducted in urban and
