Unusual Presentation of Lumbar Surgical Site Infection: A Case Study of Early Onset Pasteurella multocida Infection after Arthrodesis.

BACKGROUND Infection is a serious surgical complication that significantly increases morbidity rates and health care expenses. Most human Pasteurella multocida infections are soft-tissue infections caused by dog or cat bites. Pasteurella multocida (P. multocida) is present in the oral, nasopharyngeal, and upper respiratory tract microbiota among cats, dogs, and other domestic or wild animals. Here, we report a case of lumbar surgical site infection caused by this bacterium. CASE REPORT A 70-year-old diabetic and overweight woman had a Pasteurella multocida surgical site infection after lumbar

The First Recorded Pasteurella multocida Infection Post Abdominoplasty Through a Surgical Drain: A Case Report.

The authors report the first case of postoperative Pasteurella multocida infection following elective standard abdominoplasty caused by indirect contamination from a cat-punctured surgical drain. A 51-year-old previously healthy woman underwent uncomplicated standard abdominoplasty but subsequently developed fever, erythema, and abdominal pain. Imaging, aspiration, and microbiological analysis confirmed infection with P. multocida. Further questioning revealed her house cat had punctured the surgical drain, which was subsequently repaired by the patient using superglue to restore negative pres

Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae infection inhibits scavenger receptor A-mediated phagocytosis of Pasteurella multocida in alveolar macrophages.

BACKGROUND: A secondary Pasteurella multocida (Pm) infection following Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae (Mo) challenge in sheep results in severe respiratory disease. Scavenger receptor A (SRA) is a key phagocytic receptor on macrophages, which facilitates microbial clearance. However, the role of sheep SRA in Mo-associated secondary Pm infection is less understood. METHODS AND RESULTS: The expression of SRA was found to be the highest in alveolar macrophages (AMs) compared with lung tissue and spleen using quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Also, SRA was expressed in various tissues of sheep. S

Use of TUNEL staining to detect apoptotic cells in the lungs of cattle experimentally infected with Pasteurella haemolytica.

Lung sections taken from calves with experimental Pasteurella haemolytica respiratory infection exhibited increased numbers of TUNEL positive cells with time after challenge. This finding suggests that P. haemolytica, or toxins and other components released by the organism, induces apoptosis in bovine leukocytes in vivo. By so doing this might impair host defense and contribute in part to the severe pneumonia that characterizes bovine pasteurellosis.

Penetration of parenterally administered ceftiofur into sterile vs. Pasteurella haemolytica-infected tissue chambers in cattle.

The effect of bacterial infection on antibiotic activity and penetration of parenterally administered ceftiofur into implanted tissue chambers was studied in cattle. Tissue chambers were implanted subcutaneously in the paralumbar fossae of eight calves (256-290 kg body weight). Approximately 80 days after implantation, the two chambers on one side of each animal were inoculated with Pasteurella haemolytica (10(6) CFU/chamber). Eighteen hours after inoculation, ceftiofur sodium was administered intravenously (5 mg/kg) to each of the calves. Non-infected chamber fluid, infected chamber fluid and

Pharmacokinetics of sulfadimidine and its N4-acetyl metabolite in healthy and diseased rabbits infected with Pasteurella multocida.

The pharmacokinetics of sulfadimidine (SDM) and its N4-acetyl metabolite (N4SDM) were investigated after intravenous bolus injection of a single dose (200 mg/kg) of SDM in normal and diseased New Zealand white rabbits. The apparent distribution volume at steady state, total body clearance and elimination half-life of SDM in normal animals were 0.7 +/- 0.3 l/kg, 0.57 +/- 0.24 l/kg/h and 1.6 +/- 1.3 h, respectively. Of the administered dose, 62.1% was metabolized by N4-acetylation, and 12.7 +/- 1.1 and 2.8 +/- 1.8% of the dose was excreted as free drug by the kidney and gastrointestinal tract, r

Pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics of gamithromycin for treating Pasteurella multocida infection in cattle using a tissue cage model.

In this study, gamithromycin, a long-acting azalide antibiotic recently introduced for bovine respiratory disease (BRD) treatment, was evaluated for its effectiveness against Pasteurella multocida using a cattle tissue cage model. Gamithromycin (6 mg/kg) was administered via both intravenous and subcutaneous routes and the gamithromycin contents in sera, transudates, and exudates were measured using HPLC/MS-MS. Non-compartmental methods were utilized for assessing pharmacokinetic parameters and an inhibitory sigmoid Emax model determined associations between the pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic

Th17 cells/IL-17A shape Pasteurella multocida serotype A infection in murine and rabbit models.

Pasteurella multocida (Pm) is an important zoonotic respiratory pathogen, especially serotype A, which can cause death in various hosts, including humans, farm animals, and wildlife. However, the exact mechanisms by which hosts mobilize the immune system against Pasteurella multocida serotype A (PmA) in mammals remain largely unexplored. In the present study, we found that the control of lung infection is critical for PmA infection. Furthermore, unbiased RNA sequencing analysis and histopathological studies revealed that T-cell associated immunity was not fully activated during PmA infection,

Venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation for septic cardiomyopathy caused by Pasteurella multocida infection: a case report.

Pasteurella is a gram-negative coccobacillus that is commonly transmitted through cat and dog bites and causes various diseases in humans. In the present case, kissing an animal caused Pasteurella multocida infection, leading to sepsis and cardiogenic shock. We used venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO) to support the cardiovascular system until recovery. A 62-year-old man with no relevant history was referred to our hospital with a 1-day history of sore throat and fever. He was diagnosed with cervical cellulitis and later developed septic shock, which necessitated catecho

Efficacy of grape seed hydro-alcoholic extract in the treatment of experimentally Pasteurella multocida infected rabbits.

Pasteurellosis is one of the rabbit's most bacterial severe diseases and leads to considerable financial damages in large production systems worldwide. Antibiotic use in animals may lead to antibiotic residues in animal products, including meat. Therefore, this study was designed to evaluate the potential role of grape seed extract (GSE) in treating Pasteurella multocida infection in rabbits. For this purpose, 45 weaned male New Zealand rabbits were divided into three groups; control, infected and infected-GSE treated. Experimental P. multocida infection in rabbits induced a remarkable decreas

Ducks as a potential reservoir for Pasteurella multocida infection detected using a new rOmpH-based ELISA.

Pasteurella multocida is an important pathogen of numerous domestic poultry and wild animals and is associated with a variety of diseases including fowl cholera. The aim of this study was to develop an indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) based on recombinant outer-membrane protein H (rOmpH) for detection of anti-P. multocida antibodies in serum to determine their prevalence in Chinese ducks. The P. multocida ompH gene was cloned into pET32a, and rOmpH was expressed in Escherichia coli BL21 (DE3). Western blotting revealed that purified rOmpH was recognized by duck antisera again

The observation of reactive thrombocytosis in New Zealand white rabbits in response to experimental Pasteurella multocida infection.

Reactive thrombocytosis is an increase in the circulating thrombocyte count secondary to a physiologic process within the body, often an infection. Reactive thrombocytosis is different than primary or essential thrombocytosis which is usually related to myeloproliferative neoplasia. Essential thrombocytosis is most common in adults, whereas reactive thrombocytosis is most frequently observed in children. Reactive thrombocytosis has been occasionally reported in cats, dogs and horses but has not been previously reported in the rabbit. Rabbits were challenged with virulent Pasteurella multocida.

Serum levels of tumor necrosis factor-alpha in calves experimentally infected with Pasteurella haemolytica A1.

The purpose of this study was to document the levels of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF) in serum of calves experimentally infected intratracheally with Pasteurella haemolytica A1 and to determine if elevated TNF levels correlate with development of pneumonic pasteurellosis in the bovine. Serum samples were collected at sequential time periods from 0 h to 72 h post inoculation with P. haemolytica. TNF levels in those sera were measured by a cytotoxicity assay utilizing the TNF-sensitive WEHI 164 mouse fibrosarcoma cell line. Serum TNF levels in infected cattle began to rise at 2 h post inocul

[Human respiratory tract infection by Pasteurella multocida subsp. multocida presumably derived from the cat].

Pasteurella multocida is a Gram-negative short rod-shaped bacteria that has been recognized as a pathogen of hemorrhagic septicemia and fowl cholera in the veterinary medicine. Infections by this microorganism as seen in the foreign literature vary widely from local infections due to bites and scratches by animals to general infections such as infections of the respiratory tract, sepsis, and meningitis. In Japan, reported cases of P. multocida infections are predominantly local infections, followed by respiratory infection. Recently, death of diabetic patients due to septicemia by this pathoge
