Pasteurella multocida is a non-spore forming gram-negative organism characterized morphologically as coccobacillus. It is frequently isolated from the nasopharynx of domestic and wild animals, and is the most common cause of soft-tissue infection in humans following bites or scratches from dogs and cats. It is easily overgrowth by other flora in the sputum and may be regularly overlook, as it resembles Haemophilus influenzae, Francisella tularensis, and Yersinia pestis. The five species that cause the majority of pasteurellosis are: multocida, septica, canis, stomatis, and dagmatis. Pasteurell

Fowl cholera is an infectious disease that affects both poultry and wild birds, characterized by hemorrhagic and septicemic symptoms, caused by Pasteurella multocida (P. multocida), and leading to substantial economic losses in the poultry sector. The development of genetic engineering vaccines against avian P. multocida encountered early-stage challenges due to the limited availability of effective gene editing tools. Presently, NgAgoDM-enhanced homologous recombination stands as a potent technique for achieving efficient gene knockout in avian P. multocida. Hence, this study employed NgAgoDM

Although the pathogenicity of Pasteurella multocida for psittacines (parrots and their relatives) has been documented in several case reports, the associated pathologic syndromes have not been well defined nor have the isolates been characterized. In addition, the prevalence of P. multocida in psittacines has not been determined. Three hundred twenty-eight psittacines (253 clinically healthy and 75 clinically ill) were cultured for P. multocida. Pasteurella multocida was not isolated from the pharynx, choana, or cloaca of psittacines. However, in five dead psittacines submitted for necropsy, P

HISTORY AND CLINICAL FINDINGS: A 65-year-old diabetic (requiring insulin during the last year) was admitted as an emergency because of a septic temperature rising to 40 degrees C with rigor, tachycardia (up to 120/min) and dyspnoea. On examination there was local reddening and swelling of the skin over the right thenar eminence and along the lower arm. Two days before admission a bad scratch had been inflicted on his right hand by a cat. He had first noticed the reddening and swelling 10 hours after the incident; 1 1/2 days after the scratch and 9-10 hours before hospitalization the first bout

Pasteurella multocida is an animal parasite of considerable economic and veterinary importance. The organism produces both capsular polysaccharide and somatic (lipopolysaccharide) antigens used to serotype the organisms. Correlations exist between antigenic structure, host susceptibility and strain virulence. The host response seems to be predominantly polymorphonuclear in nature, with little evidence of a mononuclear component in the host response to infection. In the absence of specific opsonins, phagocytosis rates are very slow, the organisms multiplying freely in an essentially extracellul

This article reports a case of systemic infection caused by Pasteurella multocida. The infection was confirmed in a 79-year-old man who was admitted to the hospital after falling from a couch. The disease was manifested by the development of fever, chills, joint pain. Laboratory tests revealed elevated C-reactive protein levels, slightly elevated nitrogen metabolites, borderline leukocytosis, and thrombocytopenia. The pathogen was identified in a blood culture and a wound swab culture. The patient was initially treated with third-generation cephalosporin (cefotaxime) and later with cefuroxime.

Pasteurella multocida (P. multocida) is an anaerobic Gram-negative coccobacilli belonging to the Pasteurella genus. It is found in many animals' oral cavities and gastrointestinal tracts, including those of cats and dogs. In this case report, we present an individual with cellulitis of the lower extremity who was later found to have P. multocida bacteremia. The patient had four pet dogs and one pet cat. He denied obtaining any scratches or bites from the pets. The patient initially presented to an urgent care center complaining of a one-day history of proximal left lower extremity edema, eryth

The gram-negative, zoonotic bacterium Pasteurella multocida was discovered in 1880 and found to be the causative pathogen of fowl cholera. Pasteurella-related diseases can be found in domestic and wild life animals such as buffalo, sheep, goat, deer and antelope, cats, dogs and tigers and cause hemorrhagic septicemia in cattle, rhinitis or pneumonia in rabbits or fowl cholera in poultry and birds. Pasteurella multocida does not play a major role in the immune-competent human host, but can be found after animal bites or in people with close contact to animals. Toxigenic strains are most commonl

INTRODUCTION: Human pasteurellosis is a severe human infection that accounts for 20-30 human deaths annually worldwide. Mucous secretions derived from pets comprise the primary source of infection, which are transmitted through animal scratches or bites.
CASE REPORT: We describe a case of Pasteurella multocida wound infection in an immunocompetent adult with a decubitus ulcer of the lower extremity. The organism was also isolated from an oral swab of the patient's dog with which he reported close contact. The patient had a favorable outcome following aggressive surgical debridement, antimicro

Pasteurella multocida is generally responsible for local infections through animal bites. It can be a cause of meningitis, which tends to affect people at the extreme ages of life or suffering from immunodeficiency. A 14-year-old teenager was hospitalized with typical signs of bacterial meningitis. P. multocida was evidenced in the cerebrospinal fluid. Progression was marked by a degradation on the 4th day of treatment, despite intravenous antibiotic therapy with third-generation cephalosporin, followed by a single seizure on the 7th day of treatment. The CT scan and magnetic resonance imaging

Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) is a common, surgical procedure in Danish ear-nose-throat departments. Surgery is often performed as an outpatient procedure. Major complications are rare, however, they may develop after the patient has been discharged. This is a case report of Pasteurella multocida meningitis secondary to FESS in a 54-year-old male.

Pasteurella multocida can cause a variety of diseases in various species of mammals and birds throughout the world but nothing is known about its importance for wild great apes. In this study we isolated P. multocida from wild living, habituated chimpanzees from Taï National Park, Côte d'Ivoire. Isolates originated from two chimpanzees that died during a respiratory disease outbreak in 2004 as well as from one individual that developed chronic air-sacculitis following this outbreak. Four isolates were subjected to a full phenotypic and molecular characterisation. Two different clones were iden

Pasteurella are commensal gram-negative bacteria isolated from the oral cavity of many domesticated animals. Most human infections occur post animal bite or scratch injury resulting in local cutaneous infection; however, case reports suggest that transmission may occur via animal secretions. Pasteurella species can be associated with serious systemic infections particularly in those with underlying disease and in the immunocompromised. We present a case of invasive Pasteurella multocida sinusitis in an immunocompromised renal transplant patient most likely acquired from a pet dog through direc

The presence of Pasteurella multocida in the oropharynx of 58 pig, cattle or rabbit breeders whose livestock had suffered from pasteurellosis was investigated using a selective medium. Blood samples for serological studies were collected at the same moment. Nineteen breeders were found to host one P multocida subsp multocida strain. Oropharyngeal carriage of P multocida was found to be more frequent in pig breeders (42% of individuals) than in cattle (10%) or rabbit (0%) breeders. Genomic polymorphism among 10 D2 strains was found by restriction endonuclease analysis using pulsed-field gel ele

The authors report a case of pasteurellosis with abscess of the brain consecutive to a bronchopulmonary infection in a woman with old-standing bilateral bronchiectasis. The prevalence of respiratory infections caused by Pasteurella multocida is low, but it is certainly underestimated. Bronchial and/or pleuro-pulmonary infections occur in subjects with reduced local and/or systemic defences. The respiratory system is colonized by direct or indirect contagion, usually in contact with pet animals carrying the organism.

Capsular and somatic serotyping was performed on 79 cultures of Pasteurella multocida from rabbits. Of these isolates, 74 were capsular type A as determined by the staphylococcal hyaluronidase decapsulation test and five were type D by the acriflavine flocculation test. Somatic type 12 was the dominant serotype, and the remainder (type 1, 3, 4 and 11) were less frequent as determined by the gel diffusion precipitin test. This report is in general agreement with other recent reports with rabbit isolates and collectively they provide important serotype and epizootiological information that will

A reproducible swine pneumonia model was developed, utilizing Pasteurella multocida (strain MSU 7) and a rapid endotracheal inoculating technique. The model provided a means of testing various factors, such as therapeutic agents that may influence the course of pulmonary pasteurellosis. In a series of experiments, 81 infected nonmedicated pigs had a morbidity of 96% and a mortality of 22%. Pasteurella multocida was isolated from 62% of the lungs at necropsy; 86% of the lungs had gross lesions characteristic for strain MSU 7 pneumonic pasteurellosis when the pigs were necropsied 7 days after in
