Parental major life events before or during pregnancy and autistic behaviors among preschool children.

In this study, we aimed to examine whether parental major life events before or during pregnancy were associated with autistic behaviors in preschoolers, and whether alcohol use or smoking modified these associations. This study included 18,664 children aged 3-6 years in southern China. Parents reported seven types of major life events before or during pregnancy. Autistic behaviors were assessed by the Clancy Autism Behavior Scale. Logistic regression was applied to evaluate the associations of parental major life events with the risk of autistic behaviors, along with the modifying effects of

Paternal Hostility and Maternal Hostility in European American and African American Families.

The authors examined the hypothesized influence of maternal and paternal hostility on youth delinquency over time. The investigation addressed significant gaps in earlier research on parental hostility, including the neglect of father effects, especially in African American families. Using prospective, longitudinal data from community samples of European American (n = 422) and African American (n = 272) 2-parent families, the authors examined the independent effects of paternal and maternal hostility on youth delinquency. The results indicated that paternal hostility significantly predicted re

Paternal Age Alters Social Development in Offspring.

OBJECTIVE: Advanced paternal age (APA) at conception has been linked with autism and schizophrenia in offspring, neurodevelopmental disorders that affect social functioning. The current study explored the effects of paternal age on social development in the general population. METHOD: We used multilevel growth modeling to investigate APA effects on socioemotional development from early childhood until adolescence, as measured by the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) in the Twins Early Development Study (TEDS) sample. We also investigated genetic and environmental underpinnings of

Callous-Unemotional Traits and Gun Violence: The Unique Role of Maternal Hostility.

Background/Objectives: Conduct Disorder (CD) involves persistent behavior violating societal norms and others' rights. A subgroup of adolescents with CD exhibits callous-unemotional (CU) traits, which are linked to severe antisocial behavior and poorer long-term outcomes. Research suggests parenting plays an important role in the development of CU traits. However, few studies have explored the role of maternal and paternal parenting practices mediating the link between CU traits and violence within the same study. Methods: This study included 222 adolescents with Conduct Disorder (Mage = 15.7,

Paternal morphine exposure enhances morphine self-administration and induces region-specific neural adaptations in reward-related brain regions of male offspring.

BACKGROUND: A growing body of preclinical studies report that preconceptional experiences can have a profound and long-lasting impact on adult offspring behavior and physiology. However, less is known about paternal drug exposure and its effects on reward sensitivity in the next generation. METHODS: Adult male rats self-administered morphine for 65 days; controls received saline. Sires were bred to drug-naïve dams to produce first-generation (F1) offspring. Morphine, cocaine, and nicotine self-administration were measured in adult F1 progeny. Molecular correlates of addiction-like behaviors w

Natural variation in early parental care correlates with social behaviors in adolescent prairie voles (Microtus ochrogaster).

Natural variation in early parental care may contribute to long-term changes in behavior in the offspring. Here we investigate the role of variable early care in biparental prairie voles (Microtus ochrogaster). Total amounts of parental care were initially quantified for 24 breeder pairs and pairs were ranked in relation to one another based on total contact. Consistency in key components of care suggested a trait-like quality to parental care. Based on this ranking, breeder pairs from the top (high-contact) and bottom (low-contact) quartiles were selected to produce high- and low-contact offs

Motivating paternal empathy and egalitarian attitudes to prevent maternal postpartum depressive symptoms: A randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of a motivation-based intervention for fathers to enhance empathy and egalitarian gender-role attitudes, aiming to prevent maternal postpartum depressive symptoms. METHODS: This was a single-blind, parallel-group randomized controlled trial conducted at a regional hospital in Japan. Eligible couples were recruited during the postpartum stay if the mother had a full-term birth and no psychiatric history. From October 2023 to November 2024, 262 fathers were enrolled and randomly assigned to the intervention or control group. The brief online intervention

Recurrent adjacent-2 segregation of a familial t(14;21)(q11.2;q11.2): phenotypic comparison of two brothers and a paternal aunt inheriting the der(14).

A 14-year-old boy was referred for a genetics evaluation after high-resolution chromosome analysis showed a small amount of extra material in the proximal long arm of chromosome 21. Five years prior, his karyotype analysis was interpreted as normal with a variant chromosome 21. The patient has short palpebral fissures, strabismus, flat antihelices of the ears, long thumbs with bilaterally absent interphalangeal creases, proximal bilateral 3/4 syndactyly, small testes, hypotonia, mental retardation, and speech problems. He has significant depression and behavioral problems including hyperactivi

Impact of fathers on daughters' age at menarche: a genetically and environmentally controlled sibling study.

Girls growing up in homes without their biological fathers tend to go through puberty earlier than their peers. Whereas evolutionary theories of socialization propose that this relation is causal, it could arise from environmental or genetic confounds. To distinguish between these competing explanations, the authors used a genetically and environmentally controlled sibling comparison design to examine the effects of differential exposure to family disruption/father absence in a community sample of sister pairs. As specified by evolutionary causal theories, younger sisters had earlier menarche

Male age alone predicts paternity success under sperm competition when effects of age and past mating effort are experimentally separated.

Older males often perform poorly under post-copulatory sexual selection. It is unclear, however, whether reproductive senescence is because of male age itself or the accumulated costs of the higher lifetime mating effort that is usually associated with male age. To date, very few studies have accounted for mating history and sperm storage when testing the effect of male age on sperm traits, and none test how age and past mating history influence paternity success under sperm competition. Here, we experimentally manipulate male mating history to tease apart its effects from that of age on ejacu

A systematic review of human paternal oxytocin: Insights into the methodology and what we know so far.

With the consolidation of fathers' engagement in caregiving, understanding the neuroendocrine and hormonal mechanisms underlying fatherhood becomes a relevant topic. Oxytocin (OT) has been linked with maternal bonding and caregiving, but less is known about the role of OT in human fatherhood and paternal caregiving. A systematic review of methods and findings of previous OT research in human fathers was carried. The literature search on PubMed and Scopus yielded 133 records. Twenty-four studies were included and analyzed. Significant variability emerged in OT methodology, including laboratory

Children With Early-Onset Disruptive Behavior: Parental Mental Disorders Predict Poor Psychosocial Functioning in Adolescence.

OBJECTIVE: Parental mental disorders (MD) and child early-onset disruptive behavior (DB) are well-established risk factors for poor outcomes in adolescence. However, it is not clear whether parental MD increases risk of future maladjustment among children who already display DB. METHOD: Parents of 9-year-old children reported on child DB, whereas a patient registry was used to determine parental MD. At follow-ups at ages 15 (n = 6,319) and 18 (n = 3,068) years, information about various problems were collected via registries, parent-, and self-reports. RESULTS: In the total sample, child DB

Parental catastrophizing about their child's chronic pain: are mothers and fathers different?

Preliminary evidence suggests that parental catastrophizing about their child's pain may be important in understanding both parental responses to their child's pain and the child's pain experience. However, little is known about potential differences between mothers and fathers. There were three aims of the present study addressing this lack of knowledge: (i) to investigate the three-factor structure of the German version of the Parental Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PCS-P) (Goubert et al., 2006) in mothers and fathers of children with chronic pain, (ii) to explore differences between mothers an

Parental differential treatment and symptoms of child psychopathology: A twin study.

Parental differential treatment is associated with higher levels of psychopathology symptoms in children. Both higher overall levels of differential treatment (absolute/magnitude of differential treatment) and consistently favoring one child over another (relative differential treatment) are associated with risk in children. This study enhances understanding of parental differential treatment using a genetically informed twin design that clarifies child- and parent-driven effects. Participants included 632 twin pairs (Mage = 7.6 years, SD = 0.94; 96% White, 44% Rural) and parents. Parental dif

Sperm Transcriptional State Associated with Paternal Transmission of Stress Phenotypes.

Paternal stress can induce long-lasting changes in germ cells potentially propagating heritable changes across generations. To date, no studies have investigated differences in transmission patterns between stress-resilient and stress-susceptible mice. We tested the hypothesis that transcriptional alterations in sperm during chronic social defeat stress (CSDS) transmit increased susceptibility to stress phenotypes to the next generation. We demonstrate differences in offspring from stressed fathers that depend on paternal category (resilient vs susceptible) and offspring sex. Importantly, arti

Parenting style and mental disorders in a nationally representative sample of US adolescents.

PURPOSE: We examined associations between parenting style and past-year mental disorders in a nationally representative cross-sectional survey of US adolescents and whether the associations differed by adolescent demographic characteristics. METHODS: The sample included 6483 adolescents aged 13-18 years who were interviewed for a full range of DSM-IV mental disorders. Parenting style was assessed by adolescent-reported maternal and paternal care and control using items from the Parental Bonding Instrument. We controlled for socio-demographics, parental history of mental disorders, stressful l

Perceived parental attitudes and gambling behavior in adults: the moderating role of resilience.

INTRODUCTION: Although multiple risk factors for problematic gambling have been identified, evidence regarding perceived parental attitudes and resilience remains limited, particularly among adults in Türkiye. This study investigated the associations between perceived parental attitudes and gambling behavior and the moderating role of resilience. METHODS: A cross-sectional online correlational study was conducted in İstanbul, Türkiye, between October 2024 and May 2025 with 389 participants recruited via convenience sampling. Data were collected using the Abbreviated Perceived Parental Attitud

Parents' Perceived Discrimination and Adolescent Adjustment in Chinese American Families: Mediating Family Processes.

Parental discriminatory experiences can have significant implications for adolescent adjustment. This study examined family processes linking parental perceived discrimination to adolescent depressive symptoms and delinquent behaviors by using the family stress model and incorporating family systems theory. Participants were 444 Chinese American adolescents (Mage.wave1  = 13.03) and their parents residing in Northern California. Testing of actor-partner interdependent models showed a significant indirect effect from earlier paternal (but not maternal) perceived discrimination to later adolesce

Parental Psychological Control and Risk-Taking among Taiwanese Adolescents and Emerging Adults: Benefit Perception as a Mediator.

Youth risk-taking behaviors present important public health concerns due to their prevalence and potential adverse consequences, underscoring the need for research and prevention strategies to promote youth's healthy development. The present research examined the relationship between parental psychological control and risk-taking behaviors via benefit perception among high school and college students in Taiwan. Using a cross-sectional design, the study surveyed 378 participants to assess maternal and paternal psychological control, benefit perception, and engagement in risk-taking behaviors. R
