The Influence of Paternal Separation, Paternal History of Alcohol Use Disorder Risk, and Early Substance Use on Offspring Educational Attainment by Young Adulthood.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the associations among paternal alcohol problems, separation, and educational attainment in European American and African American offspring and whether offspring early alcohol/tobacco/marijuana use influenced these associations. METHOD: Families with offspring ages 13-19 years at intake were selected from state birth records and screened by telephone to determine high-risk or low-risk status (with/without paternal heavy drinking). Families of men with two or more driving-under-the-influence offenses were added as a very-high-risk group. Data from 340

Determining paternity before DNA - the significance of pregnancy duration.

BACKGROUND: Questions concerning paternity have been of major interest over the centuries. Issues such as legitimacy, fidelity, inheritance and child maintenance have been central. Maternity was unequivocal, but paternity could be uncertain. A key issue in paternity cases was whether the mother's account of sexual intercourse was consistent with the timing of the birth. This required an understanding of the possible duration of pregnancy. We examined how law and forensic medicine assessed the significance of pregnancy duration in establishing paternity throughout the 20th century. MATERIAL AN

Monitoring the fate of paternal mitochondria and their elimination in rice zygotes.

Mitochondria are preferentially transmitted from the maternal plant in most angiosperms, including rice, and paternal mitochondria are generally eliminated during microgametogenesis and/or in zygotes. The mechanism by which paternal mitochondria are eliminated progresses during plant reproductive processes. In the present study, we examined the distribution of paternal mitochondria in rice sperm cells and zygotes produced through the in vitro fertilization (IVF) of isolated rice gametes. Male gametes of rice possess mitochondria with nucleoids, suggesting the potential transfer of paternal mit

Paternal Filicide and Chronic Child Abuse: An Autopsy Case.

Paternal filicide is the deliberate killing of one's child by the father. It is a rare form of homicide that is complex and disturbing, as it might involve child domestic violence in its course. It reflects on the underlying psychodynamic and socio-economic stressors. We report a case of a paternal filicide by smothering involving a 4-year-old male child, associated with chronic child abuse. Autopsy examination revealed bluish discolouration of the nail beds, multiple abrasions and contusions present over the bilateral cheeks, nose, lips, submandibular region, right lateral aspect of the body,

Paternal Inflammatory Bowel Disease and the Risk of Pregnancy Loss.

BACKGROUND: Only about 30% of conceptions end in live births, yet there are little data on paternal causes of pregnancy loss. Men with inflammatory bowel disease may have multiple disease-related issues that may affect fertility. We aimed to examine pregnancy outcomes in women undergoing assisted reproduction whose male partners had Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis. METHODS: This nationwide study included all embryo transfers registered in the Danish Assisted Reproduction Registry from January 2, 2006, to September 3, 2019. The exposed cohort included embryo transfers from couples in whi

Altered Behavior and Neuronal Activity with Paternal Snord116 Deletion.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS) is a neurodevelopmental disease associated with multiple behavioral features, including a prevalence for psychosis. The genetic causes of PWS are well characterized and involve the silencing or deletion of the paternal copy of a region of chromosome 15q11-13. One gene within this region, Snord116, a non-coding RNA, has been determined to have a determinant role in the manifestation of PWS. However, it remains unclear as to how the deletion of this allele can affect activity in the brain and influence psychosis-like behaviors. METHODS: In this

Paternal BMI in the preconception period, and the association with child zBMI.

BACKGROUND: Rapid growth and excess weight in early childhood are associated with obesity risk. While maternal preconception BMI has been identified as a potential risk factor, the role of paternal preconception BMI is less clear. OBJECTIVES: To examine the association between paternal preconception BMI and age- and sex-standardized WHO BMI z-score (zBMI) growth rates, zBMI, and weight status, in 0- to 10-year-old children. To determine whether these associations differed by child sex and maternal preconception weight status. METHODS: A longitudinal cohort study was conducted through The App

Paternal factors and adverse birth outcomes in Lanzhou, China.

BACKGROUND: Many maternal factors are known to be associated with adverse birth outcomes, but studies about paternal factors yielded inconsistent conclusions. The study was to assess whether paternal factors are associated with low birth weight (LBW), preterm birth (PTB), and small for gestational age (SGA). METHODS: A birth cohort study was conducted in 2010-2012 at the Gansu Provincial Maternity and Child Care Hospital, the largest maternity and childcare hospital in Lanzhou, China. Paternal age, ethnicity, educational level, height, weight, smoking, and drinking were collected. Birth outco

Evidence for paternal DNA transmission to gynogenetic grass carp.

BACKGROUND: Grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idellus, GC), as the highest-output fish in China, is economically important. The production of gynogenetic grass carp (GGC) will provide important germplasm resource for producing improved GC. At present, knowledge regarding the heterologous sperm DNA in gynogenetic offspring is little. Thus, revealing paternal DNA in GGC at the molecular level would be highly significant for fish genetic breeding. RESULT: In this study, ultraviolet-treated sperm of koi carp (Cyprinus carpio haematopterus, KOC, 2n = 100), was used to activate the eggs of GC (2n = 48).

Paternal hyperglycemia in rats exacerbates the development of obesity in offspring.

Parental history with obesity or diabetes will increase the risk for developing metabolic diseases in offspring. However, literatures as to transgenerational inheritance of metabolic dysfunctions through male lineage are relatively scarce. In the current study, we aimed to evaluate influences of paternal hyperglycemia on metabolic phenotypes in offspring. Male SD rats were i.p. injected with streptozotocin (STZ) or citrate buffer (CB, as control). STZ-injected rats with glucose levels higher than 16.7 mM were selected to breed with normal female rats. Offspring from STZ or CB treated fathers (

Multiple paternity: A compensation mechanism of the Chinese alligator for inbreeding.

The Chinese alligator Alligator sinensis is a critically endangered species endemic to China. Knowledge about reproductive strategies of a species contributes to their conservation. Little is, however, known about the reproductive strategies and its impact on the population. In the present study, an easy and non-invasive genetic method was used to improve the understanding of mating system of Chinese alligators and its effect on the population genetic diversity by nine polymorphic microsatellite loci. There was a high incidence of multiple paternity among 50 clutches, with a total 60% of the c

If looks could heal: Child health and paternal investment.

Data from the first two waves of the Fragile Family and Child Wellbeing study indicate that infants who look like their father at birth are healthier one year later. The reason is such father-child resemblance induces a father to spend more time engaged in positive parenting. An extra day (per month) of time-investment by a typical visiting father enhances child health by just over 10% of a standard deviation. This estimate is not biased by the effect of child health on father-involvement or omitted maternal ability, thereby eliminating endogeneity biases that plague existing studies. The resu

Does multiple paternity influence offspring disease resistance?

It has been suggested that polyandry allows females to increase offspring genetic diversity and reduce the prevalence and susceptibility of their offspring to infectious diseases. We tested this hypothesis in wild-derived house mice (Mus musculus) by experimentally infecting the offspring from 15 single- and 15 multiple-sired litters with two different strains of a mouse pathogen (Salmonella Typhimurium) and compared their ability to control infection. We found a high variation in individual infection resistance (measured with pathogen loads) and significant differences among families, suggest

Missing paternal data and adverse birth outcomes in Canada.

BACKGROUND: Research on predictors of birth outcomes tends to focus on maternal characteristics. Less is known about the role of paternal factors. Missing paternal data on administrative records may be a marker for risk of adverse birth outcomes. DATA AND METHODS: Analyses were performed on a cohort of births that occurred from May 16, 2004 through May 15, 2006, which was created by linking birth and death registration data with the 2006 Canadian census. Log-binomial and binomial regression were used to estimate relative risks and risk differences for preterm birth, small-for-gestational-age

Paternal irradiation perturbs the expression of circadian genes in offspring.

The circadian system represents a complex network which influences the timing of many biological processes. Recent studies have established that circadian alterations play an important role in the susceptibility to many human diseases, including cancer. Here we report that paternal irradiation in mice significantly affects the expression of genes involved in rhythmic processes in their first-generation offspring. Using microarrays, the patterns of gene expression were established for brain, kidney, liver and spleen samples from the non-exposed offspring of irradiated CBA/Ca and BALB/c male mic
