Allele-counting based non-invasive prenatal paternity testing for trisomy 21 fetuses:Methodology and case-based evaluation.

Prenatal paternity testing in fetuses with chromosomal aneuploidy poses interpretative challenges for traditional short tandem repeat (STR) analysis, whereas non-invasive SNP-based approaches may offer advantages. This study compared STR and non-invasive SNP testing for paternity determination in two fetuses with Down syndrome (trisomy 21). Amniotic fluid and parental peripheral blood samples were collected. STR typing was performed using the STRtyper-21G system. Non-invasive prenatal paternity testing (NIPPT) was conducted on maternal plasma cell-free fetal DNA using a custom capture panel of

Paternity Leave Status and Mental Health Symptoms Among Ohio Fathers: A Population-Representative Survey, 2022‒2023.

Objectives. To examine the associations between paternal leave status and mental health symptoms in a large population-representative study of fathers after the birth of a child. Methods. We used data from the 2022-2023 Ohio Fatherhood Survey (OFS) to model the relationship between paid work leave factors and mental health (Patient Health Questionnaire-2 [PHQ-2] and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-2 [GAD-2]) by using weighted descriptive analyses and adjusted logistic regression modeling. Results. Fathers with unpaid leave were more likely to report anxiety symptoms (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 1

Discovery and comprehensive analysis of a congenital chimerism via paternity testing using short tandem repeat genotyping.

In medical forensics, the detection of more than two alleles at a single locus is generally interpreted as a mixed sample or contamination. However, this can also indicate chimerism, in which an individual contains two or more distinct cell lines with different genomes. Multiple alleles at a single locus can be identified using short tandem repeat (STR) genotyping. In this study, we report a case of chimerism in a child, in which multiple alleles were detected at several loci during routine paternity testing. In particular, two alleles were detected at six loci with markedly uneven peaks, and

Therapeutic exposures and pubertal testicular dysfunction are associated with adulthood milestones and paternity after childhood cancer.

BACKGROUND: Childhood cancer therapy may cause long-term effects. This cross-sectional study evaluated adulthood milestones in male childhood cancer survivors (CCS). METHODS: The study population comprised 252 male CCS with 6 to 42 years of survival diagnosed at the Children's Hospital in Helsinki (1964-2000) at the age of 0 to 17 years. Sex-, age-, and area of residence-matched population controls were randomly selected from the Finnish national registries. Data on moving away from the parental home, marital status, offspring, and adoption in CCS were compared with the population controls. W

The baculum affects paternity success of first but not second males in house mouse sperm competition.

The vast variation observed in genital morphology is a longstanding puzzle in evolutionary biology. Studies showing that the morphology of the mammalian baculum (penis bone) can covary with a male's paternity success indicate a potential impact of baculum morphology on male fitness, likely through influencing sperm competition outcomes. We therefore measured the size (measurements of length and width) and shape (geometric morphometric measurements) of the bacula of male house mice used in previously published sperm competition experiments, in which two males mated successively with the same fe

[Making offspring from act and substance. Experimenting with procreation and paternity in reproductive medicine and fiction].

As an experimental medical practice artificial insemination in humans dates back to the end of the 18th century. Efforts intensified in the second half of the 19th century, when, especially in France, the number of reports in scientific publications increased and the topic became the subject of heated debates. I trace this emergence of reproductive medicine avant la lettre by reviewing the relevant medical publications. Hereby, I focus on how experiments in artificial insemination presupposed a new conceptualisation of procreation which detaches procreation from the doings of human actors by r

Gender-Sensitive Screening for Paternal Mental Health: Psychometric properties of the Perinatal Assessment of Paternal Affectivity (PAPA) for the postnatal period.

Despite growing recognition of fathers' involvement in caregiving, paternal mental health during the perinatal period remains insufficiently explored. Recent evidence indicates that fathers may experience perinatal affective symptoms through externalizing behaviors, somatization, and addictive tendencies, which can negatively affect father-infant interactions and partner relationships. This study aims to validate the Perinatal Assessment of Paternal Affectivity (PAPA), previously validated in the prenatal period, in a sample of Italian fathers postnatally. Data from 221 fathers (mean age = 36.

Evaluation of interactive effects between paternal alcohol consumption and paternal socioeconomic status and environmental exposures on congenital heart defects.

BACKGROUND: While the maternal risk factors on congenital heart defects (CHDs) have often been assessed, paternal contribution to CHDs, especially the joint effects of paternal risk factors on CHDs remain unknown. This study examined the major impacts of paternal alcohol consumption and its interaction (on multiplicative and additive scales) with paternal socioeconomic status (SES) and environmental exposures on CHDs in China. METHODS: A population-based case-control study involving 4,726 singleton CHDs cases and 4,726 controls (without any malformation and matched on hospital, gender, and ge

Hepatoblastoma in a child with a paternally-inherited ABCC8 mutation and mosaic paternal uniparental disomy 11p causing focal congenital hyperinsulinism.

Hepatoblastoma is a tumour of early childhood occurring in association with genetic syndromes including Beckwith-Wiedemann Syndrome (BWS) which results from dominance of paternally-inherited genes on chromosome 11p15. We report a child without clinical BWS, neonatally diagnosed with focal congenital hyperinsulinism resulting from a paternally-inherited recessively-acting mutation of ABCC8 and pancreatic paternal uniparental disomy (UPD) for chromosome 11p15, who subsequently developed hepatoblastoma. Genetic testing showed UPD 11p15 in the pancreas and liver but not systemically, allowing the

Maternal depression and paternity leave-taking in Italy: the mediating role of coparenting and parenting stress.

The transition to parenthood represents a vulnerable period for maternal mental health. Although current literature recognizes the benefit of paternity leave-taking on maternal mental health during the post-partum and family well-being, empirical evidence on its impact remains limited. The present study aimed to evaluate the association of fathers' paternal leave on maternal mental health outcomes, as mediated by co-parenting and parenting stress. A sample of 346 Italian mothers (Mage = 34.25; SD = 4.45) of infants aged 0-12 months (Childs' age in days M = 144.97; SD = 103.05) completed an onl

Paternity, erectile function, and health-related quality of life in patients operated for pediatric testicular torsion.

INTRODUCTION: Spermatic cord torsion (SCT) may lead to organ loss and can potentially influence fertility. Long-term effects of SCT are not fully investigated. OBJECTIVE: The purpose was to evaluate paternity rates in adults who have had SCT in childhood and to compare the results to those of a control population. The secondary purposes were to compare paternity rates after testis-preserving surgery with those after orchiectomy and to evaluate erectile function and health-related quality of life (HRQoL). STUDY DESIGN: Questionnaires concerning paternity, erectile function (International Inde

Paternity establishment at birth and early maltreatment: Risk and protective effects by maternal race and ethnicity.

BACKGROUND: Minority race/ethnicity, low socioeconomic status, and lack of established paternity have been identified in previous research as risk factors for child maltreatment. However, given vastly different patterns of income distribution, single parenting and co-parenting across racial and ethnic populations, it is difficult to know which of these factors contribute most to maltreatment risk. OBJECTIVE: The current study explores whether the odds of maltreatment differ across race/ethnicity when paternity is not established at birth after controlling for maternal socioeconomic status. M

The right to know your genetic parents: from open-identity gamete donation to routine paternity testing.

Over the years a number of countries have abolished anonymous gamete donation and shifted toward open-identity policies. Donor-conceived children are said to have a fundamental "right to know" the identity of their donor. In this article, we trace the arguments that underlie this claim and question its implications. We argue that, given the status attributed to the right to know one's gamete donor, it would be discriminatory not to extend this right to naturally conceived children with misattributed paternity. One way to facilitate this would be through routine paternity testing at birth. Whil

[Is it useful to modify the care of Klinefelter's syndrome to improve the chances of paternity?].

Until a few years ago, Klinefelter syndrome with a homogeneous 47.XXY karyotype was considered a model of absolute male sterility. In this review, we will discuss: (1) potential fertility following TEsticular Sperm Extraction-IntraCytoplasmic Sperm Injection (TESE-ICSI), (2) the physiopathology of spermatogenic failure and the origin of focal spermatogenesis and risk of aneuploidy in potential offspring, (3) the advantage of searching for and cryopreserving spermatozoa in adolescent instead of adult patients. In previous published series, TESE was successful in almost 50% of patients and pregn

Microsatellite DNA markers applied to detection of multiple paternity in Caiman latirostris in Santa Fe, Argentina.

Detecting multiple paternity in wild populations of the broad-snouted caiman (Caiman latirostris) has important implications for conservation efforts. We have applied microsatellite markers to examine genetic variation in C. latirostris and also have provided the first data concerning detection of multiple paternity in wild populations of this species. Blood samples from four nest-guarding C. latirostris females and their hatchlings were obtained from Santa Fe Province, Argentina. Amplified products were analyzed by electrophoresis on 10% polyacrylamide gels and visualized with silver staining

Evidence of multiple paternity in Morelet's Crocodile (Crocodylus moreletii) in Belize, CA, inferred from microsatellite markers.

Microsatellite data were generated from hatchlings collected from ten nests of Morelet's Crocodile (Crocodylus moreletii) from New River Lagoon and Gold Button Lagoon in Belize to test for evidence of multiple paternity. Nine microsatellite loci were genotyped for 188 individuals from the 10 nests, alongside 42 nonhatchlings from Gold Button Lagoon. Then mitochondrial control region sequences were generated for the nonhatchlings and for one individual from each nest to test for presence of C. acutus-like haplotypes. Analyses of five of the nine microsatellite loci revealed evidence that progen

Size breeds success: multiple paternity, multivariate selection and male semelparity in a small marsupial, Antechinus stuartii.

Mating in the marsupial genus Antechinus is a synchronous annual event that is characterized by monoestry in females and abrupt postmating mortality in males. Male semelparity (multiple copulations during a single breeding season per lifetime) is often assumed to occur as a consequence of the intense mating effort expended by males in the rut, but the forces selecting for this remain elusive. Here, we investigate selection in male brown antechinus, Antechinus stuartii, and test two hypotheses for the evolution of semelparity: intermale competition and sperm competition. If intermale competitio
