A systematic review and meta-analysis of pathologic complete response rates for patients with cholangiocarcinoma treated on liver transplant protocols.

UNLABELLED: BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Many heterogenous orthotopic liver transplant (OLT) protocols exist for patients with unresectable cholangiocarcinoma. Little is known about the incidence, predictors for, and the significance of achieving a pathologic complete response (pCR). METHODS: We performed a systematic review through September 2022 of the PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases. A random-effect meta-analysis was conducted to pool data across studies with reported pCR rates. Heterogeneity between treatment protocols was assessed via subgroup analysis. The pCR and 1-, 3-, and

Does Bladder Cancer Subtype Influence Pathologic Complete Response (pCR) and Pelvic Diffusion-Weighted Magnetic Resonance Imaging (DW-MRI) Response Evaluation After Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy? Pathological Perspective.

INTRODUCTION: We aimed to provide a pathological perspective on the management of muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC) by correlating the prechemotherapy transurethral resection of bladder tumor findings and postchemotherapy radiologic evaluation with final radical cystectomy (RC) findings. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study included 79 MIBC patients treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) and RC. Pelvic diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DW-MRI) and pathologic reports were retrieved from our institutional database. All pathology slides were reviewed based on dia

Cross-Spatial-Scale Radiomics for Predicting Pathologic Complete Response to Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy in Breast Cancer: A Multicenter, Interpretable MRI Study.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Pathologic complete response (pCR) is a key endpoint after neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) in breast cancer, but whole-tumor radiomics may dilute heterogeneous response signals. We developed and externally validated TriSpace, an interpretable MRI biomarker integrating global tumor, intratumoral, peritumoral, and clinicopathologic information for pretreatment pCR prediction. METHODS: This retrospective four-center study included 658 patients who underwent pretreatment dynamic contrast-enhanced T1-weighted MRI before standard NAC (February 2018-April 2025). Patients fro

Long-term outcomes in triple-negative breast cancer after a pathologic complete response: does the type of neoadjuvant therapy matter?

BACKGROUND: Neoadjuvant chemotherapy is standard for stage IB-III triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), with pathological complete response (pCR) strongly associated with survival. Although escalation with platinum and immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) improves pCR and long-term outcomes, patients with pCR in control arms of pivotal trials also show favorable outcomes. Whether the regimen leading to pCR impacts long-term survival is largely unknown. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis, searching phase II and III trials including early-stage TNBC patients with pCR. A p

Predictors of pathologic complete response in triple‑negative breast cancer treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Preoperative neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) is a commonly employed treatment strategy for triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). Various clinical factors may influence the likelihood of achieving a pathological complete response (pCR) following NAC. This study conducted a meta-analysis to identify factors associated with pCR to inform clinical decision-making. EMBASE, PubMed, WOS, Scopus databases were selected as the information sources to identify studies published before July 1, 2025. Predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied, and the quality of included studies was assessed.

Ki-67 expression and rates of pathologic complete response in T1cN0M0 triple-negative breast cancer: a national cancer database analysis.

PURPOSE: Treatment sequencing for T1cN0M0 triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) remains controversial because neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) has not demonstrated improved overall survival (OS) compared to adjuvant chemotherapy (ACT). Using pathologic complete response (pCR) as an early, positive prognostic indicator, this study evaluates how Ki-67 expression levels impact pCR rates in T1cN0M0 TNBC to identify patients who benefit most from upfront chemotherapy. METHODS: The National Cancer Database (NCDB) was queried (2018-2022) for female patients aged ≥ 18 with T1N0M0 TNBC undergoing chemot

Exploratory evaluation of CA 15-3 × NLR score for predicting pathologic complete response in breast cancer patients undergoing neoadjuvant chemotherapy.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the predictive role of the CA 15-3 × neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) score in estimating pathologic complete response (pCR) in patients with invasive breast cancer who underwent neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT). METHODS: A total of 330 patients treated with NACT between January 2015 and March 2025 were retrospectively analyzed. The CA 15-3 × neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) score was calculated by multiplying pre-treatment serum CA 15-3 levels with the NLR. pCR was defined as the absence of invasive carcinoma in both the breast and axillary lymph

Pathologic Complete Response after Chemotherapy with Atezolizumab plus Bevacizumab for Hepatocellular Carcinoma with Tumor Thrombus in the Main Portal Trunk.

We report a case of pathologic complete response after successful treatment for advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) complicated with portal venous tumor thrombus with atezolizumab and bevacizumab followed by radical resection. The patient was a male in his 60s. During follow-up for chronic hepatitis B, abdominal ultrasonography revealed a huge tumor located in the right lobe of the liver with the portal vein thrombosed by the tumor. The tumor thrombus extended to the proximal side of the left branch of the portal vein. The patient's tumor marker levels were elevated (alpha-phetoprotein, 14

Neoadjuvant Radiation with Concurrent 5-FU Resulting in Complete Pathologic Response in Stage IIIB Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Urethra.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the urethra is a rare malignancy, comprising less than 1% of all malignancies. The annual age-adjusted incidence of urethral SCC is 4.3 per million in men and 1.5 per million in women. Due to the rarity of the disease, there are a limited number of prospective randomized controlled trials to evaluate the optimal management of locally advanced urethral SCC. Here, we present the case of a 47-year-old man with stage IIIB urethral squamous cell cancer that showed complete clinical and pathologic response to neoadjuvant chemoradiation with only 5-flurouracil after i

Neoadjuvant Hypertermic Isolated Limb Perfusion in Treatment of Undifferentiated Spindle Cell Sarcoma of Lower Limb with Achieved Complete Pathologic Response.

BACKGROUND: Hyperthermic isolated limb perfusion uses therapeutic effect of hyperthermia in the bounded compartment of the limb together with increased concentration of chemotherapy effect than what would be achieved in systemic application. Gold standard was melphalan (Alkeran) in combination with tasonermin (Beromun, tumor necrosis factor alpha). The efficacy of this combination has been demonstrated in limb soft tissue sarcomas and in patients with limb isolated bulky disease of malignant melanoma. Complete pathological response of a primary renal Ewing sarcoma to neoadjuvant chemotherapy: A case report.

Primary renal Ewing sarcoma (PRES) is an exceptionally rare and aggressive malignancy with a poor prognosis. The optimal management strategy remains poorly defined due to its rarity. We report a case of a 39-year-old female with PRES. The patient received six cycles of neoadjuvant chemotherapy (VDC/IE regimen), followed by right radical nephrectomy. Histopathological examination revealed dense fibrocollagenous and inflammatory tissue with no viable tumor cells, confirming a pathological complete response (pCR). This case highlights the critical importance of a multimodal treatment approach int

Pathological complete response following neoadjuvant chemoimmunotherapy in cancer of unknown primary: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Cancers of unknown primary (CUP) are a heterogeneous group of metastatic malignancies in which a primary tumor cannot be identified despite comprehensive diagnostic evaluation. Most CUP patients have a poor prognosis, and only 15-20% can be classified into favorable subgroups. Although molecularly guided therapy (MGT) has shown survival benefits in global phase II studies, the overall outcomes remain unsatisfactory. In particular, intrathoracic lymph node metastasis of unknown origin represents a clinical dilemma, with limited evidence guiding treatment decisions. CASE DESCRIPTION

Effect of adjuvant chemotherapy on the oncological outcome of rectal cancer patients with pathological complete response.

BACKGROUND: Locally advanced rectal cancer is typically treated using a combination of neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy and total mesorectal resection. While achieving pathological complete response following neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy has been recognized as a positive prognostic factor in oncology, the necessity of adjuvant chemotherapy for locally advanced rectal cancer patients with pathological complete response after surgery remains uncertain. The objective of this meta-analysis was to examine the impact of adjuvant chemotherapy on the oncological outcomes of rectal cancer patients who at

Pathological complete response to pembrolizumab in patients with metastatic ascending colon cancer with microsatellite instability.

Pembrolizumab is a novel immune-checkpoint inhibitor used for treatment of microsatellite instability-high (MSI-H) colorectal cancer. Several studies have reported clinical complete response (CR) after treatment with pembrolizumab, but none has confirmed pathological CR. Here we provide the first description of pathological CR with R0 resection after immune-checkpoint therapy. A 45-year-old man presented at our hospital with abdominal distention and highly elevated tumor markers. Contrast-enhanced abdominal CT showed a 110 × 75 mm bulky mass with markedly swollen lymph nodes and an isolated pe

[A case of locally advanced rectal cancer had a pathological complete response to XELOX Therapy].

The patient was a 62-year-old man with bowel obstruction in a locally advanced rectal cancer. Computed tomography (CT) scan of the abdomen showed tumor enlargement(11.4 × 9.0 cm)that invaded the urinary bladder, but no distant metastasis. XELOX therapy was planned in order to shrink or eliminate the tumor after a sigmoid colostomy. Four courses of XELOX therapy were perfomed. Consequently, the level of the tumor marker had been restored to a normal range. CT scan revealed marked shrinkage of the tumor (6.1 × 5.2 cm) and a sharply-defined border between the tumor and the urinary bladder. Three
