MRI Findings in a Dog with Unilateral Sacroiliitis.

Sacroiliitis is a rare pathology recently reported in the veterinary literature, mainly in large-breed dogs. The main associated clinical signs are lumbosacral pain and/or lameness of one or both hindlimbs. However, it is a nonspecific presentation and can be mistaken for other clinical disorders with a higher prevalence, such as caudal lumbar disc herniation or degenerative lumbosacral stenosis, among others. The present report describes the MRI findings in a German shepherd dog with unilateral sacroiliitis secondary to a possible trauma and the relevance of advanced imaging techniques in the

Comparative Pathology of Zoonotic Orthopoxviruses.

This review provides a brief history of the impacts that a human-specific Orthopoxvirus (OPXV), Variola virus, had on mankind, recalls how critical vaccination was for the eradication of this disease, and discusses the consequences of discontinuing vaccination against OPXV. One of these consequences is the emergence of zoonotic OPXV diseases, including Monkeypox virus (MPXV). The focus of this manuscript is to compare pathology associated with zoonotic OPXV infection in veterinary species and in humans. Efficient recognition of poxvirus lesions and other, more subtle signs of disease in multip

Scedosporium apiospermum: An Emerging yet Overlooked Fungal Pathogen in Veterinary Medicine-A Case-Based Review.

Scedosporium apiospermum is an emerging filamentous fungus of increasing clinical relevance in human and veterinary medicine. Previously regarded as a ubiquitous soil saprophyte, it is now recognized as an opportunistic pathogen causing a wide spectrum of localized and systemic infections, particularly in immunocompromised hosts. Although infections in animals are considered rare, they are likely underdiagnosed or misidentified as aspergillosis or fusariosis due to overlapping clinical features and morphological similarities. The first confirmed animal isolate of S. apiospermum in the Western

Wischnewski Spots and Black Oesophagus in Suspected Fatal Hypothermia in a Brown Howler Monkey (Alouatta guariba clamitans) and a Rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus).

Fatal hypothermia represents a diagnostic challenge in veterinary pathology. Wischnewski spots (WS) and black oesophagus (BO) have been described in human cases of fatal hypothermia but rarely in animals. We now describe WS and BO in suspected fatal hypothermia in a free-ranging brown howler monkey (Alouatta guariba clamitans) and a pet rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus). Both animals had dark spots resembling WS on the gastric mucosa and the monkey also had BO with haematin deposition. In both cases, stress factors and relatively cold environmental conditions were present prior to death.

Babesia gibsoni cytochrome b mutations in canine blood samples submitted to a US veterinary diagnostic laboratory.

BACKGROUND: Babesiosis caused by Babesia gibsoni is recognized throughout the world and can be difficult to treat. Resistance to atovaquone is associated with mutations in the B. gibsoni mitochondrial genome, specifically the M128 position of cytochrome b (cytb). The prevalence of cytb mutations in North America has not been reported. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: The objective of our study was to describe the prevalence of cytb M128 mutations in B. gibsoni in canine blood samples submitted to a US veterinary diagnostic laboratory. A secondary objective was to determine whether or not some dogs had

Immunology and pathology of echinostomes and other intestinal trematodes.

Intestinal trematodes constitute a major group of helminths that parasitize humans and animals with relevant morbidity and mortality. Despite the importance of the intestinal trematodes in medical and veterinary sciences, immunology and pathology of these helminth infections have been neglected for years. Apart from the work focused on the members of the family Echnistomatidae, there are only very isolated and sporadic studies on the representatives of other families of digeneans, which makes a compilation of all these studies necessary. In the present review, the most salient literature on th

Cardiac disease in the Spix Macaw (Cyanopsitta spixii): two cases.

Cardiovascular disease in avian species, other than poultry, is being increasingly reported. In psittacine birds, atherosclerosis and congestive heart failure are the leading cardiovascular diseases, often resulting in multiorgan dysfunction and demise. The Spix's macaw (Cyanopsitta spixii) is arguably the most endangered psittacine species worldwide. We aimed to describe the gross and microscopic findings in two adult Spix's macaws wherein severe cardiovascular pathology resulted in sudden death. Bird 1 had pathologic findings consistent with fibrinoheterophilic vegetative pulmonic valvular e

Angiostrongylus vasorum infection in dogs from a cardiopulmonary dirofilariosis endemic area of Northwestern Italy: a case study and a retrospective data analysis.

BACKGROUND: In Italy, Angiostrongylus vasorum, an emergent parasite, is being diagnosed in dogs from areas considered free of infection so far. As clinical signs are multiple and common to other diseases, its diagnosis can be challenging. In particular, in areas where angiostrongylosis and dirofilariosis overlap, a misleading diagnosis of cardiopulmonary dirofilariosis might occur even on the basis of possible misleading outcomes from diagnostic kits. CASE PRESENTATION: Two Cavalier King Charles spaniel dogs from an Italian breeding in the Northwest were referred to a private veterinary hospi

Osteochondrosis and epiphyseal bone abnormalities associated with copper deficiency in bison calves.

Two bison calves were submitted to the Western College of Veterinary Medicine to confirm suspected copper deficiency. In addition to clinical signs, there were pathologic changes in the cartilage and subchondral bone of several joints. Water analysis indicated high levels of sulfate in the drinking water, contributing to a secondary copper deficiency.

Acute poisoning death resulting from a veterinary employee's isoflurane abuse.

Isoflurane is a volatile inhalation anesthetic used primarily in veterinary medicine and, recently, infrequently in human medical applications. However, it is sometimes abused for recreational or suicidal purposes by medical and research personnel. We present a forensic autopsy case of a man in his 40 s who was employed at a veterinary hospital and was suspected to have died from isoflurane poisoning. Autopsy findings showed no injuries or lesions, and the pathological findings of most organs suggested acute death. Routine gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis for blood alcohol showed

Uterine adenocarcinoma with peritoneal carcinomatosis in a cat: HBME-1 as a potential marker for uterine epithelial disorders in queens.

Uterine adenocarcinomas and the spread of the endometrial neoplastic cells throughout the abdominal cavity (peritoneal carcinomatosis) are rare in cats. The Hector Battifora Mesothelial Epitope-1 (HBME-1) is a widely used monoclonal antibody in human medicine, including uterine disorders, but is scarcely explored in veterinary medicine. Herein, we describe a case of uterine adenocarcinoma with peritoneal carcinomatosis and HBME-1 immunolabeling of the neoplastic cells in a female cat. Clinically, the cat was admitted to a veterinary teaching hospital with fever, and was submitted to ovariohyst

Surveillance of amyloidosis and other diseases at necropsy in captive trumpeter swans (Cygnus buccinator).

The purpose of this study was to characterize the incidence and diagnostic features of amyloidosis and other diseases found at necropsy in captive trumpeter swans (Cygnus buccinator). A search of Iowa State University's Department of Veterinary Pathology and Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory databases yielded 31 trumpeter swan (C. buccinator) necropsy cases from captive swans in protected habitats. Eleven of the 31 birds had amyloid deposition most commonly in the spleen (8 of 11), liver (7 of 11), and kidney (6 of 11) and less often in the pancreas (2 of 11) and adrenal gland (2 of 11). Amyloi

Reference interval determination for parathyroid hormone, ionized calcium, and total calcium concentrations in the domestic rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus).

OBJECTIVE: To establish reference values for intact parathyroid hormone (PTH), ionized calcium (iCa) using both whole blood and serum samples, and serum total calcium in domestic rabbits. METHODS: Blood samples were collected at a private veterinary hospital from clinically healthy client-owned, mixed-breed, mixed-sex, adult (1 to 7 years of age) rabbits using manual restraint over a 5-month period. Complete blood count, serum biochemical analysis, and i-STAT were performed for each sample. Serum iCa and intact PTH concentrations were analyzed by the Michigan State University Veterinary Diagn

A common celiacomesenteric trunk is a rare anatomic variant in dogs.

With the increasing use of CT and MRI for diagnostic imaging and planning of interventional procedures, it is important for veterinary radiologists to be familiar with variations in normal vascular anatomy and not mistake them for pathology. The arterial blood supply to the cranial abdominal viscera is provided by the celiac and the cranial mesenteric arteries. A common celiacomesenteric trunk (CMT) has been reported as a rare anatomical variant in dogs. The goals of this retrospective, observational, cross-sectional prevalence study were to determine the prevalence of a CMT in dogs with non-a

Femoral arterial embolism of an airgun pellet in a dog.

A 4-y-old male Labrador Retriever was submitted for autopsy following radiographic examination by the owner, a veterinarian, which had revealed 3 embedded projectiles. Autopsy revealed a single entrance wound on the left flank. Using flap-by-flap dissection, the trajectory of the projectile was traced through the skin and lumbar musculature to its location where it had perforated the abdominal aorta, causing fatal acute hemoperitoneum. Remarkably, the copper-coated pellet (Diabolo) was found in the lumen of the right femoral artery, consistent with projectile embolism. No external trauma was p

Reproductive tract infections in horses.

Diagnosis, treatment, and, ultimately, prevention of reproductive disease are vital components of equine veterinary medicine. A thorough understanding of anatomy and physiology is necessary to reconcile the pathologic findings of disease. Only then can a rational treatment plan be formulated. Many recent advances in knowledge about the reproductive system of multiple species have application to the mare and stallion.
