Prediction of Monocular and Binocular Visual Acuity for the Pseudophakic Patients Using Simulated Modulation Transfer Function.

PURPOSE: To develop a correlation of simulated modulation transfer function (MTF) to clinical monocular and binocular visual acuity (VA) to predict the VA defocus curves of intraocular lenses (IOLs) in the early preclinical development. METHODS: Ray tracing software was used to generate MTF area (MTFa) data at defocus positions from -3.0 D to +2.0 D. which were then correlated with clinical monocular and binocular VA data to predict preclinical metrics. Simulated MTF data was generated (with mean photopic pupil size of 3 mm with photopic spectral weighting) in a modified pseudophakic Navarro

Effect of residual sphere on uncorrected visual acuity and satisfaction in patients with monofocal and multifocal intraocular lenses.

PURPOSE: To assess the effect of residual sphere on vision and satisfaction in pseudophakic patients. SETTING: Private clinics, United Kingdom. DESIGN: Retrospective case series. METHODS: A multivariate model evaluated the effect of 1-month residual sphere on outcomes of pseudophakic patients. Odds ratios (ORs) were calculated to assess the relative risk of not achieving ≥20/20 monocular uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), ≥20/50 uncorrected near visual acuity (UNVA), and not being satisfied with vision. ORs were assessed for residual sphere -1.00 to +1.00 diopter (D) in quarter-diop

Morphological characteristics of the subfoveal choroid and their association with visual acuity in postoperative patients with unilateral congenital cataracts.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to evaluate the morphological characteristics of the subfoveal choroid and explore the possible association of these characteristics with best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) in postoperative patients with unilateral congenital cataracts (CCs). METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study. Subfoveal choroidal structures were measured by spectral-domain optical coherence tomography with enhanced depth imaging (EDI-OCT). Several choroidal parameters, including subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT), total choroidal area (TCA), luminal area (LA), stromal area (SA) and choroidal va

The use of OCT in good visual acuity MOGAD and AQP4-NMOSD patients; with and without optic neuritis.

Myelin oligodendrocyte-antibody-associated disease (MOGAD) often presents with severe optic neuritis (ON) but tends to recover better than in aquaporin-4 antibody neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (AQP4-NMOSD). We measured OCT and VEP in MOGAD and AQP4-NMOSD eyes with good visual function, with or without previous ON episodes. Surprisingly, OCT and/or VEPs were abnormal in 84% MOGAD-ON versus 38% AQP4-NMOSD-ON eyes (p = 0.009) with good vision, compared with 18% and 17% respectively of eyes with no previous ON. A sub-group with macular OCT performed as part of a research study confirmed b

Outcomes after Cholecystectomy in Patients with Sickle Cell Disease: Does Acuity of Presentation Play a Role?

BACKGROUND: Cholecystectomy is the most commonly performed procedure in sickle cell disease (SCD) patients, but outcomes after cholecystectomy have not been well studied. Our aim was to explore the characteristics and outcomes of cholecystectomy in patients with SCD compared with patients without SCD, and assess whether acuity of presentation played a role. STUDY DESIGN: Patients younger than age 35, with the primary diagnosis of gallbladder disease, who underwent cholecystectomy, were identified in the Nationwide Inpatient Sample (2005 to 2014). Patients were grouped into treatment groups by

Visual Acuity and Refractive Error Improvement in Keratoconic Patients: A Low-Income Context Management Perspective.

INTRODUCTION: Visual acuity (VA) and refractive error (RE) remain important parameters in the management of keratoconic (KC) patients. Despite rapid amelioration in capacity of diagnostic equipment, these remain inaccessible to the majority of practitioners in low-income countries. Notwithstanding limitations, practitioners are expected to utilize existing resources to satisfactorily manage their increasing numbers of keratoconic patients. PURPOSE: To determine the changes in visual acuity and refractive errors with diagnostic and management options available in low-income contexts. METHODS:

Unilateral Application of Cathodal tDCS Reduces Transcallosal Inhibition and Improves Visual Acuity in Amblyopic Patients.

Objective: Amblyopia is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by visual acuity and contrast sensitivity loss, refractory to pharmacological and optical treatments in adulthood. In animals, the corpus callosum (CC) contributes to suppression of visual responses of the amblyopic eye. To investigate the role of interhemispheric pathways in amblyopic patients, we studied the response of the visual cortex to transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) applied over the primary visual area (V1) contralateral to the "lazy eye." Methods: Visual acuity (logMAR) was assessed before (T0), immedia

Occult Suicidality and Psychiatric Disease Among Emergency Department Patients with Low-acuity Chief Complaints.

INTRODUCTION: Patients presenting to emergency departments (ED) are often screened for suicidality, even when their chief complaint does not involve mental health concerns. Patient receptiveness to ED-based mental health screening and intervention is unknown, particularly among patients with low-acuity chief complaints, who often prioritize rapid evaluation and discharge. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included adults with low-acuity chief complaints presenting to an urban, academic ED in the Northeastern United States during daytime and evening hours, from 2015 to 2016. The association of postoperative subjective visual function with acuity, glare, and contrast sensitivity in patients with early cataract.

BACKGROUND: It has been shown in our previous studies that early cataracts affect vision in ways that can be measured by objective means and that this objective impairment in visual acuity, glare, and contrast sensitivity can be successfully reversed by cataract surgery. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association of subjective visual function with objective measures of acuity, glare, and contrast sensitivity in patients who were symptomatic from early cataract. METHODS: We administered a task-oriented questionnaire prior to and 4 months after cataract surgery to patients who were symptomatic fro

[How do patients assess their visual acuity after intracapsular cataract extraction and correction with eyeglasses].

In the investigation reported here, 115 patients who had undergone cataract surgery at least 1 year previously, and for whom cataract glasses had been prescribed, were asked to give a subjective assessment of their vision. Almost 50% of them mentioned impairment of vision in certain situations (traffic, descending stairs). Altogether, 75.7% of the patients interviewed considered their vision good; only 2.7% felt it was unsatisfactory. Defects characteristic of aphakia correction were also cited by patients with good visual acuity. On the other hand, even patients with relatively poor vision (m
