Fast responses to images of animate and inanimate objects in the nonhuman primate amygdala.

Visual information reaches the amygdala through the various stages of the ventral visual stream. There is, however, evidence that a fast subcortical pathway for the processing of emotional visual input exists. To explore the presence of this pathway in primates, we recorded local field potentials in the amygdala of four rhesus monkeys during a passive fixation task showing images of ten object categories. Additionally, in one of the monkeys we also obtained multi-unit spiking activity during the same task. We observed remarkably fast medium and high gamma responses in the amygdala of the four

Neural synchrony correlates with surface segregation rules.

To analyse an image, the visual system must decompose the scene into its relevant parts. Identifying distinct surfaces is a basic operation in such analysis, and is believed to precede object recognition. Two superimposed gratings moving in different directions (plaid stimuli) may be perceived either as two surfaces, one being transparent and sliding on top of the other (component motion) or as a single pattern whose direction of motion is intermediate to the component vectors (pattern motion). The degree of transparency, and hence the perception, can be manipulated by changing only the lumina

Perceiving animacy in 'identical' images.

Some objects appear 'animate' (e.g. dogs and elephants) while others do not (e.g. boots and sofas). This distinction pervades human cognition, with an expansive literature reporting striking effects of animacy on vision, memory, social perception, and neural organization. But studies of perceived animacy face a persistent challenge: Objects that differ in animacy tend to differ in many lower-level visual features (e.g. shape, texture, spatial frequency). Thus, it remains controversial whether animacy per se - as opposed to its lower-level correlates - drives visual processing. Here, we achieve

Reconstructing mental representations of block towers: A new bias for physical stability in visual working memory.

Recent studies have explored the perception of physical properties (such as mass and stability) in psychology, neuroscience, and artificial intelligence (AI), and perhaps the most popular stimulus from such studies is the block tower - since such displays (of stacked rectilinear objects) evoke immediate vivid impressions of physical (in)stability. Previous work has studied how people make higher-level decisions about such towers, often with explicit questions ("Which way will it fall?"), and limited to those tower properties that are systematically manipulated as explicit independent variables

A solution to generalized learning from small training sets found in infants' repeated visual experiences of individual objects.

One-year-old infants rapidly form and generalize categories from idiosyncratic experiences of very few exemplars of those categories. Here we provide evidence on the statistics of infants' daily-life visual experiences for 8 object categories. Using a corpus of infant head-camera images recorded at mealtimes (87 mealtimes,14 infants), we measure the frequency of the unique instances of each category and the variability of the visual experiences within and across instances of the same category. The frequency distributions of instances for individual infants are highly skewed, containing many im

Visual processing and dyslexia: evidence from stress marker assignment in Greek.

The present exploratory study investigated whether targeted visual intervention can improve stress assignment during oral reading in children with developmental dyslexia. The Greek orthography uniquely marks lexical stress with a diacritic visual mark, allowing testing in-text sensitivity to identify fine visual-linguistic information. A total of one hundred participants took part in the study. Seventy children with developmental dyslexia (Mean age = 9.3, SD = 1.07) were assigned to attend either a visual or an auditory single-session intervention. The visual stimuli consisted of visual discri

Skeletal representations of shape in the human visual cortex.

Shape perception is crucial for object recognition. However, it remains unknown exactly how shape information is represented and used by the visual system. Here, we tested the hypothesis that the visual system represents object shape via a skeletal structure. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and representational similarity analysis (RSA), we found that a model of skeletal similarity explained significant unique variance in the response profiles of V3 and LO. Moreover, the skeletal model remained predictive in these regions even when controlling for other models of visual simi

Estimating stimulus-processing time via position slopes in visual search.

Existing approaches to measure the time needed to process a single stimulus have confounded the measure with other time-consuming processes, such as initiation of the response, and neglect the massively parallel processing abilities of the visual system. Conversely, traditional set-size manipulations in visual search yield flawed estimates of stimulus-processing time, mainly because the number of actually processed stimuli is typically unknown. We have recently developed the systematic-search paradigm, a visual-search paradigm that overcomes this limitation and potentially provides a valid mea

The Effect of Orthographic Neighbourhood and Semantics on Lexical Processing in a Transparent Orthographic Language: A Pupilometry Study.

A word's neighborhood comprises orthographically similar words, yet neighborhood effects in transparent orthographies remain theoretically underspecified. We investigated how lexical status and orthographic distance modulate cognitive effort using pupil dilation during silent reading. Pupillary responses from thirty-four adults were analyzed using a combination of Linear Mixed-Effects models and Generalized Additive Mixed Models across real words (RWs), low-distance pseudowords (PWs), and high-distance nonwords (NWs). Results revealed a temporal hierarchy and a double dissociation between lexi

The Bouma law accounts for crowding in 50 observers.

Crowding is the failure to recognize an object due to surrounding clutter. Our visual crowding survey measured 13 crowding distances (or "critical spacings") twice in each of 50 observers. The survey includes three eccentricities (0, 5, and 10 deg), four cardinal meridians, two orientations (radial and tangential), and two fonts (Sloan and Pelli). The survey also tested foveal acuity, twice. Remarkably, fitting a two-parameter model-the well-known Bouma law, where crowding distance grows linearly with eccentricity-explains 82% of the variance for all 13 × 50 measured log crowding distances, cr

Simultanagnosia and object individuation.

Simultanagnosic patients have difficulty in perceiving multiple objects when presented simultaneously. In this review article, I discuss how neuropsychological research on simultanagnosia has been inspirational for two interconnected lines of research related to the core mechanisms by which the visual system processes cluttered scenes. First, I review previous studies on enumeration tasks indicating that, despite their inability to identify multiple objects, simultanagnosic patients can enumerate up to 2-3 elements as efficiently as healthy individuals (the so-called "subitizing" phenomenon).

What change detection tells us about the visual representation of shape.

Many recent findings suggest that human observers are surprisingly "blind" to changes in visual displays, failing to notice when substantial scene elements are added, subtracted, or altered in successive presentations of the scene. But observers are far more sensitive to certain visual changes than others, and we suggest that which types of changes enjoy differential sensitivity can reveal a great deal about the underlying visual representations. In this study, we investigate how the human visual system represents the shape of objects by demonstrating a previously unknown influence on detectio

Enhancing haptic object recognition ability through a real multisensory learning environment.

Active learning, or control over the visual sensory experience during object learning, has been shown to facilitate visual object recognition in adults, relative to a unisensory passive experience. Recent research suggests adding haptics to a naturalistic visual encoding environment, creating a multisensory active experience, also facilitates object recognition relative to unisensory and multisensory conditions with visual encoding via a computer screen. Until now, this active advantage has been tested through the visual modality. To expand on the existing literatures, we tested how multisenso

Gaze dynamics during natural scene memorization and recognition.

Humans can rapidly memorize numerous images, which is surprising considering the limited visual sampling of each image. To enhance the probability of recognition, it is crucial to focus on previously sampled locations most likely to support memory. How does the visuomotor system achieve this? To study this, we analyzed the eye movements of a group of neurotypical observers while they performed a natural scene memorization task. Using comprehensive gaze analysis and computational modeling, we show that observers traded off visual exploration for exploiting information at the most memorable scen

Exploring the importance of shape on dynamic recognition of self-face or friend-face.

Our own face is well-known to us, but it is unclear whether we perceive it in the same way as other familiar faces. Unlike others’ faces, self-faces provide limited opportunities to observe facial motion. This study investigated the importance of shape when recognizing self or friend from dynamic face clips. Dynamic sequences were created using Deepfake, manipulating face shape and motion independently. In both experiments, participants observed a visually presented face and identified whether the face motion was self or friend. In Experiment 1, face shape was manipulated to match or mismatch

Rapid adaptation of the m170 response: importance of face parts.

Face perception is often characterized as depending on configural, rather than part-based, processing. Here we examined the relative contributions of configuration and parts to early "face-selective" processing at the M170, a magnetoencephalographic response approximately 170 ms after stimulus onset, using adaptation. Previously (Harris and Nakayama 2007), we showed that rapid successive presentation of 2 stimuli (stimulus-onset asynchrony < 800 ms) attenuates the M170 response. Such adaptation is face-selective, with greater attenuation when faces are preceded by other faces than by houses. T

My body or yours? The effect of visual perspective on cortical body representations.

A human body part, such as a foot, may be observed from an egocentric perspective (consistent with looking at one's own body, e.g. top of the foot, toes pointing up) or from an allocentric perspective (only consistent with looking at someone else, e.g. top of the foot, toes pointing downwards). We found that the right extrastriate body area (EBA) response to images of body parts was enhanced for body parts presented from an allocentric perspective. Other areas of extrastriate cortex which responded robustly to images of bodies, including the right lateral occipital complex, right MT and left E

Grouping in object recognition: the role of a Gestalt law in letter identification.

The Gestalt psychologists reported a set of laws describing how vision groups elements to recognize objects. The Gestalt laws "prescribe for us what we are to recognize 'as one thing'" (Kohler, 1920). Were they right? Does object recognition involve grouping? Tests of the laws of grouping have been favourable, but mostly assessed only detection, not identification, of the compound object. The grouping of elements seen in the detection experiments with lattices and "snakes in the grass" is compelling, but falls far short of the vivid everyday experience of recognizing a familiar, meaningful, na
