BACKGROUND: White spot syndrome virus (WSSV), one of the most devastating pathogens in global shrimp aquaculture, has been shown to hijack and reprogram host metabolic pathways to support its replication. Among the various host metabolic circuits, the malate-aspartate shuttle (MAS) is a key redox-balancing mechanism that facilitates the translocation of cytosolic NADH into mitochondria, thereby sustaining glycolysis and mitochondrial function. To date, however, the involvement of MAS in WSSV pathogenesis has not been documented.
METHODS: In this study, we investigated the role of the MAS path

This study presents the development of intelligent screen-printed labels for real-time food freshness monitoring. Using chitosan grafted with rosolic acid (RA) and immobilized on montmorillonite (MMT) through cationic exchange, a hybrid dye was synthesized and applied in screen-printing inks. The hybrid structure was characterized by XRD, TGA, and UV-vis, confirming improved thermal stability and maintained halochromic properties. SEM analysis showed consistent ink deposition on filter paper, while water contact angle (WCA) measurements demonstrated enhanced surface hydrophobicity due to the M

The effects of different thermal sterilization conditions on the quality and digestibility of ready-to-eat (RTE) shrimp were investigated. Compared with the high-temperature (121 °C) and short-time (6 min and 8 min) sterilization, the low-temperature (110 and 115 °C) and long-time (>20 min) sterilization significantly promoted the Maillard and browning reactions and changed the color of the RTE-shrimp. The high sterilization temperature promoted shrimp protein oxidation, resulting in increased carbonyl group, disulfide bond, and free radical content, while the free sulfhydryl group content dec

Cadmium (Cd) is currently one of the heavy metals with the highest environmental toxicity impact. Sodium thiosulfate (Na2S2O3) is a commonly used heavy metal detoxification drug in clinical practice, however, it has not been used for Cd detoxification of Litopenaeus vannamei. The present study used exposure of L. vannamei to 150 μg/L of Cd while mitigating in the addition of 75 μg/L of Na2S2O3 for 28 days. The goal was to study the detoxifying effect of Na2S2O3 on L. vannamei poisoning and its role in intestinal flora. The results showed that the growth of Cd group was inhibited, and the growt

The allergenic potential of shrimp (Penaeus vannamei) proteins during gastrointestinal (GI) digestion is currently unclear. In this study, the role of gastric, intestinal, and GI digestion on the sensitizing and eliciting capacity of shrimp proteins was investigated using a BALB/c mice model. Gastric digestion products of shrimp proteins produced lower specific IgE/IgG1, histamine and mMCP-1 levels and significantly reduced the proportion of degranulated mast cells as compared to the shrimp protein extract; furthermore, no histopathological changes were observed in the lung, spleen and jejunum

Branchial chambers constitute the main osmoregulatory site in almost all decapod crustaceans. However, few studies have been devoted to elucidate the cellular function of specific cells in every osmoregulatory structure of the branchial chambers. In decapod crustaceans, it is well-known that the osmoregulatory function is localized in specific structures that progressively specialize from early developmental stages while specific molecular mechanisms occur. In this study, we found that although the structures developed progressively during the larval and postlarval stages, before reaching juve

Vibrio is heterotrophic ubiquitous marine bacteria that plays dual role as putative halobiont and potential pathogen. Environment and diseases are inextricable hence the role of vibrio as a potential pathogen in the natural environment must be comprehended. Hence the present study aims at investigating the pathogenicity of Vibrio owensii on the post larvae of Litopenaeus vannamei. V. owensii isolated from the marine natural habitat of the Palk Bay province in India was highly resistant to ampicillin, methicillin, tetracycline and vancomycin. The strain also lacked pathogenicity against the pos

White spot syndrome virus (WSSV) is a threatening pathogenic virus in shrimp culture, and at present, no effective strategy can prevent and control the disease. Intestinal flora and its metabolites are important for the resistance of shrimp to lethal pathogenic viruses. However, the changes of metabolites in the shrimp intestines after WSSV infection remain unclear. We established an artificial oral infection method to infect shrimp with WSSV and analyzed the metabolites in intestinal content of shrimp by HPLC and tandem mass spectrometry. A total of 78 different metabolites and five different

The escalating incidence of emerging pathogens and their propensity for co-infection pose a severe threat to the sustainable intensification of Penaeus vannamei aquaculture. To address this challenge, a novel triplex TaqMan quantitative PCR (qPCR) assay was developed for the simultaneous detection of three high-risk agents: Infectious Myonecrosis Virus (IMNV), Decapod Iridescent Virus 1 (DIV1), and Covert Mortality Nodavirus (CMNV). This study not only establishes a robust multiplex platform but also systematically optimises its performance, achieving superior analytical sensitivity and reprod

Prior studies on Sargasum sp. as an immunostimulant were mostly focused on injection and immersion methods. Moreover, large-scale aquaculture requires practical applications to minimize stress caused by handling. The objective of this research was to investigate the effect of feed enrichment with extract of Sargassum polycystum on the immune response and survival rate of Litopenaeus vannamei. This study used S. polycystum which is a brown seaweed that contains bioactive compounds such as flavonoids and phenolics, was added to shrimp feed at varying concentrations (5, 10, and 15 g/kg). Translucent Post larvae Disease (TPD), caused by Vibrio parahaemolyticus, has emerged as a critical disease impacting shrimp hatcheries across several Asian countries. This disease severely affects the early larval stages and can lead up to 100 % mortality. Thus, controlling TPD is essential to reduce losses in shrimp hatcheries. Although PCR-based assays have recently been reported for the detection of TPD-causing V. parahaemolyticus (VpTPD), these methods have not yet undergone comprehensive validation in accordance with the Aquatic Animal Health Code of the World Organization for Animal Hea

Recently, there has been a burgeoning scholarly interest in elucidating the functional significance and regulatory mechanisms underlying the involvement of small G proteins, such as Rab, in the antiviral immune response of crustaceans. Rab is a member of the small G protein family and plays a crucial role in the transport of cell membranes within eukaryotic cells. It is involved in the movement of cell membranes both within the cell and on its surface, aiding in the entry of effector proteins into specific membrane subregions. While previous research has highlighted the importance of Rab in ph

This study aimed to explore the underlying mechanism about combined thermal/pressure processing on the allergenicity of shrimp (Macrobrachium nipponense). We analysed sensitizing and eliciting capacities, structural changes, gastrointestinal digestion, and mapped linear epitopes. Mice treated with steamed + reverse-pressure sterilized shrimp exhibited lower specific IgE and IgG1 concentrations, degranulation, vascular permeability, and allergic symptoms than those fed with raw shrimp or steamed shrimp (p < 0.05). Reduced allergenicity of shrimp using combined thermal/pressure processing was no
