Self-reported sickness absence and presenteeism as predictors of future disability pension: Cohort study with 11-year register follow-up.

Many healthcare workers in eldercare are pushed out of the labor market before the official retirement age due to poor health. Identification of early warnings signs is important to avoid complete loss of work ability. The aim of this study was to investigate to what degree sickness absence and presenteeism increase future risk for disability pension among eldercare workers. A total of 8952 Danish female eldercare workers responded to a survey about work environment and health. They were followed for 11 years in the Danish Register for Evaluation of Marginalization, with time-to-event analyses

Sickness absence and disability pension among injured car occupants, and associations with injury and car safety factors: A prospective cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: Knowledge regarding sickness absence (SA) and disability pension (DP) following a road traffic injury, is lacking. The aim of this study was to investigate SA and DP among injured car occupants before and after a crash, accounting for permanent medical impairment (PMI). Further, to explore associations between injured body region, car model year of introduction (MYI), and European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP) safety rating and number of SA/DP days in year two and four following the crash date. METHODS: A longitudinal cohort study including 63,358 individuals injured whe

Sickness absence and disability pension among swedish women prior to breast cancer relapse with a special focus on the roles of treatment and comorbidity.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to determine the longitudinal prevalence and the predictors of sickness absence (SA) and disability pension (DP) in breast cancer (BC) women who eventually developed relapse. METHODS: A total of 1293 BC women, who were ages 20-63 years, diagnosed between 1996 and 2011 and by 2016 had all developed relapse, were identified in Swedish registers and were followed from two years before to five years after their primary diagnosis, while they were relapse-free. Annual prevalence of SA and DP was calculated. Logistic regression was used to estimate adjusted odds ratios (AOR) for

Is being in paid work beyond state pension age beneficial for health? Evidence from England using a life-course approach.

BACKGROUND: Given the current policy emphasis in many Western societies on extending working lives, we investigated the health effects of being in paid work beyond state pension age (SPA). Until now, work has largely focused on the health of those who exit the labour force early. METHODS: Our data come from waves 2-4 of the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing, including the life history interview at wave 3. Using logistic and linear regression models, we assessed the longitudinal associations between being in paid work beyond SPA and 3 measures of health (depression, a latent measure of soma

[Follow-up Care in the Field of Medical Rehabilitation Concerning Psychosomatic Indications Based on the New Conceptual Framework of the German Pension Insurance].

Mental disorders rank first amongst all causes for disability pensions and second in the field of medical rehabilitation. Especially alarming is the significantly lower age of entry of the mentally ill disability pensioners, compared to those with other indications. Mentally ill people often look back at a long history of diseases before getting in contact with the German pension insurance. In this regard the German pension insurance, which is obligated to effectively support people in order to keep them in working life until reaching the regular retirement age, is facing a big challenge, whic

Genetic and Environmental Influences on Disability Pension Due To Mental Diagnoses: Limited Importance of Major Depression, Generalized Anxiety, and Chronic Fatigue.

BACKGROUND: Previous research indicates that liability to disability pension (DP) due to mental diagnoses is moderately influenced by genetic factors. This study investigates whether genetic contributions to the liability to DP due to mood and neurotic diagnoses overlap with the genetic influences on major depression (MD), generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), or chronic fatigue (CF). METHOD: A prospective cohort study including 9,985 female twins born in Sweden 1933-1958. The presence of MD, GAD, and CF was assessed by computer-assisted telephone interviews conducted in 1998-2002. Data on DP d

Social integration, socioeconomic conditions and type of ill health preceding disability pension in young women: a Swedish population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Disability pension has increased in recent decades and is seen as a public health and socioeconomic problem in Western Europe. In the Nordic countries, the increase has been particularly steep among young women. PURPOSE: The aim was to analyze the influence of low social integration, socioeconomic risk conditions and different measures of self-reported ill health on the risk of receiving disability pension in young women. METHOD: The study comprised all Swedish women born in 1960 to 1979, who had been interviewed in any of the annual Swedish Surveys of Living Conditions (1990-200

"If Ever a Wreck Came Back from Overseas She Was One": The Treatment and Pensioning of Psychologically Traumatized Nursing Sisters after the First World War.

During the First World War, 2845 women served as nursing sisters with the Canadian Expeditionary Force. After the war, some women developed nervous and mental conditions that they said were caused by their wartime service and applied for military pensions and treatment. So how were these women treated by doctors and pension boards? Men who suffered from psychological trauma were frequently labelled as "cowards" or "malingerers." Many of the symptoms typically associated with nervous cases, such as hysteria, were viewed as inherently feminine at the time but we know little about how this criter

Sick leave and disability pension among TMD patients with musculoskeletal diseases, mental and behavioural disorders - a SWEREG-TMD population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are associated with musculoskeletal diseases (MSD), mental and behavioural disorders (MBD), and patients with TMD have been shown to have 2-3 times more days of sick leave (SL) and disability pension (DP) than the general population. MSD and MBD are two of the most common causes for SL and DP, and the association between TMD and the influence of comorbidities on the need for SL and DP among TMD patients need further clarification. This study investigates the impact of MSD and MBD comorbidity on SL and DP among TMD patients diagnosed in a hospital s

Discrepancies in the evaluation of incapacity for work in a patient with epidermolysis bullosa acquisita between public pension fund and occupational medicine expert raise the issue of competencies.

Abstrat A 50-year-old female patient suffering from a severe form of epidermolysis bullosa acquisita (EBA) took legal action against the Croatian Pension Insurance Institute (CPII) in an attempt to overturn their assessment that she was no longer capable of working as a seamstress but still capable of doing administrative jobs. Her claim was that she was not capable of doing any job at all. She was first diagnosed EBA in 2000, and the disease progressed slowly with intermittent remissions. In 2012, skin erosions appeared on her feet, followed by the loss of all toenails and lesions and infiltr

Risk factors for suicidal behaviour in individuals on disability pension due to common mental disorders - a nationwide register-based prospective cohort study in Sweden.

BACKGROUND: Common mental disorders (CMD) have become one of the leading causes for disability pension (DP). Studies on predictors of adverse health outcome following DP are sparse. This study aimed to examine the association of different socio-demographic factors and health care consumption with subsequent suicidal behaviour among individuals on DP due to CMD. METHOD: This is a population-based prospective cohort study based on register data. All individuals aged 18-64 years, living in Sweden on 31-Dec-2004 who in 2005 were on DP due to CMD (N = 46 745) were followed regarding suicide attemp

Gestational age at birth and the risk of disability pension in early adulthood: a whole-population register study of people born in Finland in 1987-90.

BACKGROUND: Preterm (<37 weeks), early-term (37-38 weeks), or post-term (42 weeks) birth may elevate the risk of mental, neurodevelopmental, and cardiopulmonary disease in adulthood, potentially impacting work capacity. METHODS: We examined the association between gestational age and early disability pension (DP) among 228 572 Finnish individuals born between 1 January 1987 and 30 September 1990. We identified the first DP decision from ages 16 to ∼32 years (2003-20) by using linked birth and DP records, including timing and diagnosis. Adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence interval

Is disability pension a risk indicator for future need of psychiatric healthcare or suicidal behavior among MS patients- a nationwide register study in Sweden?

BackgroundMental disorders and suicidal behavior are common in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), they also carry a higher risk of disability pension (DP). Our aim was to investigate if DP and other factors are associated with psychiatric disorders and suicidal behavior among MS patients, and whether DP is a stronger risk indicator among certain groups.MethodA prospective population-based cohort study with six-year follow-up (2005-2010), including 11 346 MS patients who in 2004 were aged 16-64 and lived in Sweden. Incidence rate ratios (IRR) with 95 % confidence intervals (CI) were calcula

Musculoskeletal impairments in the Norwegian working population: the prognostic role of diagnoses and socioeconomic status: a prospective study of sickness absence and transition to disability pension.

STUDY DESIGN: Population-based, 5-year prospective cohort study. OBJECTIVE: To assess the incidence of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) in sickness absence longer than 8 weeks in Norway, and to identify diagnostic and socioeconomic predictors of the transition to disability pension (DP). SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: MSDs are prevalent and of major concern for sickness absence. Previous epidemiological studies are largely cross-sectional and based on self-reports, often with low response rates, selection, and reporting bias. Prospective studies with physician-verified diagnoses might be a bett

Cardiological rehabilitation, prehabilitation, and cardiovascular prevention in adults with congenital heart defects: tasks and services of the German Pension Insurance-part 2: cardiological rehabilitation.

Congenital heart defects (CHD) represent the most common inborn organ anomaly, with more than a million newborns affected annually. Advances in diagnostics and treatment have led to significantly improved survival rates, resulting in a growing population of an estimated 50 million adults with congenital heart defects (ACHD) worldwide. As these individuals age, they often face a high burden of morbidity and complex long-term health challenges that require specialized, lifelong care. In this context, cardiological rehabilitation (CR) becomes increasingly important, not only to reduce morbidity b
