The alimentary tract of oxudercine gobies is characterized by a lack of an anatomically distinct stomach, owing to which they are classified as stomachless. Since the environment, food requirements, and feeding habits have a significant impact on the anatomy of the alimentary tract of fish, it was assumed that predominantly carnivorous, semi-terrestrial mudskippers would have a stomach. In order to verify this hypothesis, anatomical, histological, histochemical and ultrastructural analysis of the alimentary tract of the Atlantic mudskipper Periophthalmus barbarus was performed. The results rev

Cytoarchitectonic pattern of the telencephalon of a dwarf snakehead, Channa gachua, is studied by serial transverse sections of the brain (Kluver and Barrera staining). On the anteriormost extremity of the telencephalon, olfactory bulbs terminate that are sessile. The olfactory bulbs comprise four concentric layers, which from outside toward the center are olfactory nerve layer, a glomerular layer, mitral cell layer, and internal cell layer. Large terminal nerve ganglion cells are prominently visible in the dorsomedial position where the bulbs terminate on the telencephalon. In all, 24 nuclei

Ponyfishes in the Family Leiognathidae uniquely possess a complex bioluminescent system with an esophageal light-producing organ containing bioluminescent bacterial symbionts, a reflective gas bladder, and transparent windows through adjacent tissues that allow light emission distant from the esophageal source to produce camouflaging counterillumination and, in some species, intraspecific communication and possibly illumination of prey. Despite having bacterial light production, a type of light production that in fishes is not known to be able to be rapidly initiated and terminated, researcher

This study describes the morphology of the liver tissue, histological alterations, and their relationships with the reproductive phases of the female silver croaker Plagioscion squamosissimus. We tested the hypothesis that histological alterations in liver tissue can occur at the expense of the reproductive phase of the female and that climatic factors, such as rainfall, interfere with the reproductive phases and, consequently, promote histological alterations. Histological analysis of the liver showed liver tissue with hepatocytes, bile ducts, blood vessels, sinusoids, intrahepatic pancreas,

Assessing the nutritional status and identifying major causes of mortality in larvae experiencing varying degrees of starvation are crucial for establishing appropriate feeding protocols and enhancing the welfare of hatchery-reared fish. The black rockfish Sebastes schlegelii is an important species in aquaculture and stock enhancement efforts in China, Japan, and Korea. This study aimed to identify optimal diagnostic morphometric indicators of starvation in newly hatched (0-6 days post-hatch, DPH) and postlarval stages (27-37 DPH) of this valuable fish species through histological analyses. Gill nets are a common sampling technique in inland and marine fisheries. However, gill nets are size selective and may result in bias estimates of population parameters. As such, selectivity is commonly assessed using indirect estimation techniques. Indirect estimates of gillnet selectivity have been suggested to improve estimates of important populations metrics (e.g., total annual mortality), but this assertion has not been assessed. In the current study, we simulated hypothetical populations of channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus, lake trout Salvelinus namaycush, walleye Sander vitreus, an

Body shape plays a crucial role in the movement of organisms. In the aquatic environment, the shape of the body, fins, and the underlying axial skeleton reflect the ability of organisms to propel and maneuver through water. Ontogenetic changes in body shape and flexibility of the axial skeleton may coincide with shifts in ecology (e.g., changes in habitat or feeding mode). We use the evolution of cleaning behavior in the Labridae (wrasses and parrotfishes) as a case study. Cleaner fishes are species that remove and consume ectoparasites from other organisms. In many cases, cleaning involves a

Fish scales are morphologically diverse among species, within species, and on individuals. Scales of bony fishes are often categorized into three main types: cycloid scales have smooth edges; spinoid scales have spines protruding from the body of the scale; ctenoid scales have interdigitating spines protruding from the posterior margin of the scale. For this study, we used two- and three-dimensional (2D and 3D) visualization techniques to investigate scale morphology of bluegill sunfish (Lepomis macrochirus) on different regions of the body. Micro-CT scanning was used to visualize individual s

Cynoscionella n. g. is proposed for Cynoscionella sanmarci n. sp. and two previously described species of Diplectanum Diesing, 1858 were reassigned into the new genus. The three species are gill parasites of sciaenid fishes (Perciformes: Sciaenidae). The new genus is closely related with Diplectanum (sensu stricto), but is mainly distinguished by its male copulatory organ (MCO) having a slightly sclerotized sleeve-shaped base, lacking accessory piece and accessory copulatory organ. In addition, Cynoscionella n. g. differs from Diplectanum species by having the ventral anchors with well-develop

TLR7 subfamily members are important pattern recognition receptors participating in the recognition of pathogen-associated molecular patterns. In this study, we successfully identified 3 members of TLR7 subfamily from the spiny eel Mastacembelus armatus (MaTLR7, MaTLR8 and MaTLR9). The amino acid sequence identities of MaTLR7 and MaTLR8 with Monopterus albus TLR7 were 87.2% and 76.5%, respectively and the identity of MaTLR9 with Seriola lalandi TLR9 was 74.7%. The phylogenetic analysis revealed MaTLRs showed close relationship to other species in Synbranchiformes or Perciformes. Quantitative r

Cavisoma magnum (Southwell, 1927) Van Cleave, 1931 was originally described from a sea bass, Serranus sp. and spotted surgeonfish, Ctenochaetus strigosus (Perciformes) off Sri Lanka before its more recent redescription from milkfish in the Philippines in 1995. These reports were based on only light infections of their host fishes. Of the few flathead grey mullets, Mugil cephalus (Mugilidae), that we examined in the Arabian Gulf, one fish was infected with 1,450 worms. One milkfish, Chanos chanos (Chanidae), from the same location in the Arabian Gulf, was also heavily infected with specimens of

A new nematode species, Philometra terapontis n. sp. (Philometridae), is described from male and female specimens found in the ovary of the jarbua terapon Terapon jarbua (Forsskål) (Terapontidae, Perciformes) from the Bay of Bengal off the eastern coast of India. Based on light and scanning electron microscopical examination, the new species differs from most other gonad-infecting Philometra spp. in the length of the spicules (105-114 μm), a gubernaculum with dorsal, lamella-like structures and a distinct protuberance on its distal end, and a U-shaped, dorsally uninterrupted caudal mound in th

Revista brasileira de parasitologia veterinaria = Brazilian journal of veterinary parasitology : Orgao Oficial do Colegio Brasileiro de Parasitologia Veterinaria2015eng
The purpose of this study was to use the informations relating to parasite crustaceans species that was published over the course of one century (1913 to 2013), in order to search for infestation and distribution patterns among these ectoparasites in Brazilian freshwater fish species. This search was carried out on 445 samples of 119 host fish of 27 families within the orders Characiformes, Perciformes, Clupeiformes, Mugiliformes, Osteoglossiformes, Symbranchiformes, Tetraodontiformes and Siluriformes from various regions of Brazil. We organized different host-parasite systems into matrices gr

In teleostean fish, ventilation increases have been observed in response to low dissolved oxygen levels, visual stimuli, and gustatory cues. However, olfactory sensory input may also stimulate gill ventilation rate. We investigated whether olfactory sensory input mediates gill ventilation responses, as suggested by the observation that steroidal compounds detected by the olfactory system elicited increases in opercular activity in the perciform teleost, the round goby (Neogobius melanostomus). Close parallels between gill ventilation and olfactory responses, led us to conduct an empirical stud

Estuaries supply a critical habitat to many ecologically and commercially valuable fish species, providing safety and food availability during the larval and juvenile stages. However, dissolved oxygen is naturally dynamic in these systems, varying from complete anoxia to hyperoxia. In some species, the larval stage may be particularly vulnerable to low-oxygen stress due to incomplete development of oxygen transport systems, high metabolic cost associated with early feeding and a narrow aerobic scope to support additional activity. Increasing seawater temperatures further increase oxygen demand

The Almaco jack (Seriola rivoliana) is a marine fish maintained in mariculture systems and frequently infested by monogenean parasites like Neobenedenia sp. Severe infestations can lead to high mortalities and economic losses for farmers. This study evaluated the effects of temperature on the immune response on Almaco jack infested with Neobenedenia sp. We exposed infested fishes at temperatures of 20 °C, 24 °C, and 30 °C for 20 days and took samples of different tissues at the beginning of the experiment, and after 3 and 20 days. The tissues considered were the skin, thymus, cephalic kidney,
