The goal of this work is to precise the respective aetiologic prevalence and the bases of diagnosis of pericarditis in Ivory Coast. The epidemiologic study has been done about 197 cases diagnosed between march 1972 and april 1978. These results are comparable to those collected previously in West Africa: the pericarditis is present in 1% of the patients admitted in the hospital and in 5.6% of the cardiovascular diseases of the unit of internal medicine in the Treichville Hospital (Abidjan). The semeiologic and evolutive study has been done with the 100 best documented records, with 90 acute an

AIM: To analyze the register of pericarditis in a therapeutic clinic, to evaluate their nosological spectrum, to optimize approaches to diagnosis and treatment.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: For the period 20072018, the register includes 76 patients with the diagnosis of pericarditis (average age 53.115.7 years, 2085 years, 46 female). Patients with hydropericardium were not included in the register. Diagnostic puncture of pericardium was carried out in 5 patients, pleural puncture in 11 patients. Morphological diagnostics included endomyocardial/ intraoperative biopsy of myocardium (n=4/2), thoraco

Primary pericardial disease is rare in children. The clinical features usually reflect limited venous return and cardiac output. Tuberculous pericarditis is the leading cause of pericardial disease in developing nations. A definitive diagnosis in children is frequently difficult and the manifestations are protean. We report a 10-month-old girl with fibrinofibrous pericarditis that manifested as constrictive pericarditis with prolonged fever, hepatomegaly, edema, and poor appetite. Echocardiography showed a solid mass that originated from the thickened pericardium and compressed the whole heart

Pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) associated with tuberculous pericarditis after lung transplantation is a very rare entity. Here we report a unique case of cardiac tamponade due to tuberculous pericarditis, in a patient 4 months after single right lung transplantation, the patient underwent a subxyphoid pericardial window. The pericardial effusion analysis showed exudate effusion with high level of lymphocyte concentration. Both patient and donor didn't have history of TB or TB Exposure.

An extensive, although largely forgotten, literature addresses the utility of adjunctive corticosteroid therapy in the management of tuberculosis. Corticosteroid therapy probably improves neurological outcomes of, and decreases mortality due to, tuberculous meningitis of moderate severity. Although therapy for tuberculous pericarditis is simplified (with less need for operative intervention) by adjunctive corticosteroid administration and there are fewer deaths, the incidence of subsequent constriction is not changed. The signs and symptoms of typical reactivation tuberculous pneumonia, tuberc

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to quantify the heterogeneous distribution of echodensities in the pericardial fluid of patients with tuberculous pericarditis using echocardiography and fractal analysis, and to determine whether there were differences in the fractal dimensions of effusive-constrictive and effusive non-constrictive disease.
METHODS: We used fractal geometry to quantify the echocardiographic densities in patients who were enrolled in the Investigation of the Management of Pericarditis in Africa (IMPI Africa) Registry. Sub-costal and four chamber images were included i

INTRODUCTION: Although the incidence of septic pericarditis in hemodialysis populations is less frequent in the modern antibiotic era, it is still a cause of death partly because diagnosis is sometimes difficult and uncertain.
METHODS: From 2002 to 2006, 12 out of a total of 12,213 maintenance hemodialysis patients were referred for management of septic pericarditis. Patients were diagnosed as either definite or probable septic pericarditis. A definite diagnosis of septic pericarditis is based on the discovery of pathogenic bacteria in pericardial effusion, whereas a probable diagnosis is bas

The diagnosis of tuberculous pericarditis presenting as a hemorrhagic pericardial effusion is not difficult to make, but the presence of multiple pericardial masses in tuberculous pericarditis is uncommon. The article reports a 55-year-old Asian woman with a 10-day history of fever, chest tightness and shortness of breath. Laboratory investigations revealed an elevated C-reactive protein and erythrocyte sedimentation rate, and echocardiography showed a small amount of pericardial effusion associated with multiple pericardial caseous masses (up to approximately 2.4 cm × 6.9 cm) without pericard

50 consecutive cases of pericarditis were studied. Idiopathic and viral pericarditis made up 36 p. cent of all cases. The occurrence of tuberculous or rheumatic conditions was even lower than that reported in similar series in the literature. Amongst the clinical signs of these diseases, emphasis should be placed upon the frequency of chest pain which was increased by deep inspiration in only three out of four cases. Circulatory problems associated with the pericarditis were, on the whole, minimal. However, a fall in blood pressure was seen in 6 cases and true collapse in 3 more. The electroca

Data are submitted from the published literature and the authors' observations on causation of pericarditis and transformation of its patterns over the last 24 years. The paper is based on the analysis of 325 patients having been operated on for constrictive pericarditis during the period 1974-1998. Over the last 12 years there has been an increase in the incidence of pericarditis of nonspecific etiology whereas that of pericarditis of rheumatic and tuberculous genesis has gotten substantially decreased.

OBJECTIVES: This scoping review sought to summarise available data on the prevalence, aetiology, diagnosis, treatment and outcome of pericardial disease in Africa.
METHODS: We searched PubMed, Scopus and African Journals Online from 1 January 1967 to 30 July 2017 to identify all studies published on the prevalence, aetiologies, diagnosis, treatment and outcomes of pericardial diseases in adults residing in Africa.
RESULTS: 36 studies were included. The prevalence of pericardial diseases varies widely according to the population of interest: about 1.1% among people with cardiac complaints, be

Diseases of the pericardium commonly manifest in one of three ways: acute pericarditis, pericardial effusion and constrictive pericarditis. In the developed world, the most common cause of acute pericarditis is viral or idiopathic disease, while in the developing world tuberculous aetiology, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, is commonplace owing to the high prevalence of HIV. This article provides an approach to the diagnosis, investigation and management of these patients.

The authors report two cases of rickettsial disease due to R. Conori with mainly pericarditis in one case, sero-fibrinous pleurisy in the other. They then recall a few general data concerning this rickettsial disease and the very restricted place that it occupies in the etiology of pericarditis and, even more so, in the case of pleurisy. The conditons of diagnosis, which are mainly serological, are discussed, in particular with regard to pericarditis and tuberculous pleurisy.

Pericardial mesotheliomas are rare tumors which often present with features of constrictive pericarditis. We present clinical, imaging, histological, and immunohistochemical findings of three cases presenting with chronic constrictive pericarditis. Two of these cases were initially treated as tuberculous pericarditis. Histologically, all the three cases were of an epithelioid type and showed positivity for more than one mesothelial markers. Two patients had a fatal outcome, and one was lost to follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Pericardial tuberculosis is an unusual presentation form of extrapulmonary tuberculosis, even in HIV-1 infected patients. When complicated with cardiac tamponade the prognosis worsens; therefore, early diagnosis and therapy are essential.
METHODS: A cross-sectional and descriptive study was carried out of cases with documented diagnosis of tuberculous pericarditis in a cohort of prisoner patients with tuberculosis in the Comunidad Autónoma de Madrid, during a 4-year period (March 1991-March 1995). The recovery and identification of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in our clinic were mad

BACKGROUND: Although the utility of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for diagnosis of acute pleuro-pericardial tuberculosis has been well established, its use for chronic constrictive pericarditis is yet to be reported.
AIMS: To define the sensitivity and specificity of PCR for diagnosis of tuberculosis (TB) in patients with constrictive pericarditis.
METHODS: The medical records of 30 consecutive patients with constrictive pericarditis were reviewed. In addition their historical paraffin-embedded pericardial tissues were used for new histopathologic examination and PCR amplification for Myco

Tuberculous pericarditis remains an important differential diagnosis for pericardial effusion in tuberculosis-endemic regions, even in patients with established malignancy. We report a 55-year-old female diagnosed with a metastatic well-differentiated Grade 1 duodenal neuroendocrine tumor with hepatic and nodal metastases based on gallium-68 DOTATOC positron emission tomography/computed tomography, histopathology, and immunohistochemistry findings. Transthoracic echocardiography revealed a large circumcardiac pericardial effusion that was initially presumed to be malignant because of the under

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Effusive-constrictive pericarditis (ECP) is a complex clinical condition that combines features of pericardial effusion/tamponade and constrictive pericarditis. The classic hemodynamic definition is persistent elevation of right atrial pressure despite drainage of a pericardial effusion. This review summarizes recent data on its epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and management. RECENT FINDINGS: Prevalence varies from 2.4% to 14.8% depending on diagnostic criteria and etiology, reaching up to 50% in tuberculous pericarditis in endemic regions. Common causes include id

AIM: We report on the 30-day and one-year outcome of consecutive effusive pericarditis patients, including those with tuberculous pericarditis, over a six-year-period.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Patients with large pericardial effusions requiring pericardiocentesis were included in the study after having given written informed consent. Clinical and radiological evaluations were followed by echo-guided pericardiocentesis, and extended daily intermittent drainage via an indwelling pigtail catheter. A standard short-course anti-tuberculous regimen was initiated. A total of 233 patients was included. O
