Out of 440 dentogenic pyogenic infections, 171 exclusively caused by anaerobes were investigated to understand the importance of anaerobic bacteria in dental pyogenic processes better. Grampositive anaerobic bacteria dominated. The predominant grampositive isolates in monoinfections were Peptostreptococci and in the case of mixed infections, strains of the genus Eubacterium. Strains of Prevotella and Porphyromonas dominated the gramnegative anaerobic spectra. The resistance to penicillin was very low. Altogether, only one strain of Prevotella oris and one strain of Prevotella oralis showed res

A new periodontitis classification scheme has been adopted, in which forms of the disease previously recognized as "chronic" or "aggressive" are now grouped under a single category ("periodontitis") and are further characterized based on a multi-dimensional staging and grading system. Staging is largely dependent upon the severity of disease at presentation as well as on the complexity of disease management, while grading provides supplemental information about biological features of the disease including a history-based analysis of the rate of periodontitis progression; assessment of the risk

Microorganisms harbored in the oral cavity have long been recognized to cause systemic disease with a well known mechanism of spread via the blood stream. Different factors, including the presence of periodontal disease, the number of dental extractions or the duration of dental surgery have an influence on the risk of bacteremia. Infectious endocarditis is classically cited, but there are other potential problems including brain abscess, meningitis, lung or lie abscess, and even for some authors, a risk of thrombotic heart disease. It is important to keep in mind that some of these focal infe

Prevotella nigrescens, a gram-negative black-pigmented anaerobic rod, has frequently been isolated from periodontitis and periapical periodontitis lesions. We have isolated an exopolysaccharide-producing P. nigrescens, strain 22, from a chronic periodontitis lesion. The purpose of this study was to determine the chemical composition and function of the exopolysaccharide associated with this clinical isolate. The chemical composition and structure of the purified exopolysaccharide from strain 22 were determined by high performance liquid chromatography and methylation analysis. To define the bi

Morphological changes can complicate dental treatment. This report presents a rare case of a furcation lesion in a mandibular canine with two roots. A 39-year-old man in general good health sought dental care for severe pain in his maxillary anterior teeth. The clinical examination showed localized swelling in the vestibular mucosa close to the mandibular left canine. Radiographic examination revealed two distinct roots and vertical bone resorption in the canine's mesial surface. Periodontal evaluation led to a diagnosis of periodontal abscess associated with furcation lesion. Despite the occu

Klebsiella Pneumoniae (K. pneumoniae) is a common nosocomial pathogen. However, Klebsiella-associated meningitis and brain abscess formation are extremely rare in the United States. We present a case of a 73-year-old male who initially presented for a tonsillar abscess of unknown etiology. While awaiting an abscess biopsy, the patient underwent molar extraction for chronic periodontitis and decay. The patient subsequently developed K. pneumoniae bacteremia and meningitis. As he clinically declined, repeat imaging revealed a brain abscess with eventual hemorrhagic transformation. Notably, the p

Most odontogenic and intraoral abscesses can be treated on an outpatient basis with local anesthesia. However, severe disease progression may require an incision under general anesthesia (GA) with postoperative inpatient treatment. This study aimed to evaluate the first "COVID-19 year" in Germany and compare the first "COVID-19 year" with the two previous years. All consecutive cases with odontogenic or intraoral abscesses treated in an outpatient or inpatient setting between 2018 and 2021 were included in this study. Data were collected, including the type of anesthesia, length of hospital st

A 71-year old patient with a history of minimal periodontal attachment loss presented with an asymptomatic, non-bleeding, isolated deep pocket on the mesio-facial of a central incisor. Such localized, deep pockets are most frequently associated with a root fracture or an abscess, but in this case an atypical ledge-like projection determined to be a cemental tear was detected at the base of the 6 mm pocket. Periodontal flap surgery revealed a partial detachment of the cementum. Uneventful resolution of the pocket was achieved following root planing to remove the cemental fragment and placement

Propolis carbon quantum dots (PCQDs) and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were hydrothermally synthesized. The PCQD@Ag nanocomposite was formed by reducing silver nitrate (AgNO3) with sodium citrate. PCQDs and AgNPs were characterized by UV spectroscopy, photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). In addition, X-ray diffraction (XRD) was also performed on AgNPs. The antioxidant activities of AgNPs, PCQDs, and PCQDs@AgNPs were also studied. Furthermore, their antibacterial activities were investigated under fluores

Campylobacter gracilis inhabits the gingival sulcus and has been reported to cause various periodontal diseases; it has rarely been reported to cause bacteremia. We describe a case of a two-year-old boy who presented with a consciousness disorder and was transferred to our hospital for treatment of a brain abscess. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a 6-cm brain abscess in the right frontal lobe. Urgent drainage and antibiotic administration resulted in a favorable clinical course, and the patient was discharged on the 34th day of hospitalization. Streptococcus anginosus and C. gracilis w

BACKGROUND: Controversy exists regarding possible correlation of periodontal disease with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and ankylosing spondylitis (AS). Confounding factors may relate to stringency of inflammatory disease diagnosis and the effect of therapeutic intervention for RA on periodontal disease. These factors are investigated in this study.
METHODS: Forty-five individuals with documented RA (n = 15), spondyloarthropathy (n = 15), and calcium pyrophosphate deposition disease (CPPD) (n = 15), from the Hamann-Todd collection of human skeletons compiled from 1912 to 1938, and 15 individuals

Endodontic-periodontal (endo-perio) lesions are commonly encountered in dental clinics, with patients typically presenting with acute pulpal pain, often accompanied by abscess formation and tooth mobility. Management generally involves root canal treatment (RCT) and, if required, surgical intervention. This article discusses a notable case of a 43-year-old male patient who presented with a chief complaint of pain and loose teeth in the upper left back region for the past 3 weeks. Phase I periodontal therapy was initiated, followed by RCT of teeth #21 to #25. However, 2 weeks later, the patient

A 40-year-old man was hospitalized due to fever, muscular swelling and pain. He had poorly controlled diabetes with many dental caries and repeated periodontitis. CT revealed multiple intramuscular abscesses; administration of antibiotics and pus drainage were performed. Intraoral infection was suspected as the route of infection of pyomyositis, and a total of six teeth was extracted. In the clinical treatment of diabetic patients, it is important to instruct patients to routinely check for the presence of traumatic injuries of the lower extremities, and to have routine check-ups and dental ca

Correctly differentiating between periodontal abscess (localized, acute suppurative infection of the periodontium) and osteomyelitis (the extension of an infection into the bone medullary cavity) is crucial since the former may not require antibiotics for resolution, while the latter will. Initial assessment and treatment of osteomyelitis should be based on clinical examination, radiographic interpretation, and experience. Three case histories of osteomyelitis are presented, ranging from a periodontally well-localized case to one involving a hemimandible and crossing the midline. Successful ea

Apical fenestration is a defect in the alveolar cortical plate, exposing the root without involving the alveolar bone margin, often linked to trauma, periodontal disease, and orthodontic treatment, leading to symptoms such as pain and abscesses from endodontic infections. This case report describes managing a mucosal fenestration in an endodontically treated tooth with nonsurgical root canal therapy and periodontal surgery. A 44-year-old male presented with mucosal fenestration and pain in the upper front jaw due to trauma and an inadequately treated root canal. Examination revealed an ill-fit

Human endodontic and periodontal infections are associated with complex microfloras in which approximately 150, (in apical periodontitis) and 350 (in marginal periodontitis) bacterial species have been encountered. These infections are predominantly anaerobic, with gram-negative rods being the most common isolates. The anatomic closeness of this microflora to the bloodstream can facilitate bacteremia and systemic spread of bacterial by-products and immunocomplexes. A variety of clinical procedures such as tooth extraction, periodontal and endodontic treatment, may cause translocation of microo

Brain abscesses mostly develop due to direct infection caused by a nearby infectious lesion or hematogenous spread and are rarely caused by an odontogenic infection. We report a 47-year-old woman who presented with high fever, disturbed consciousness, headache, and neck pain. Imaging studies revealed a ring-shaped enhanced mass in the left frontal lobe causing a mass effect and midline shift. Magnetic resonance spectroscopy revealed a peak alanine concentration of 1.5 ppm. Supraorbital keyhole surgery with abscess removal was performed, and a bacterial culture confirmed a diagnosis of Parvimon
