Impairment of the peripheral nervous system in Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.

BACKGROUND: The clinical manifestations of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) primarily reflect involvement of the central nervous system. The coexistence of CJD with peripheral nervous system involvement has also been reported. OBJECTIVE: To analyze peripheral neuron electrophysiologic changes and to compare these data with neuropathologic features of spinal motor neurons in patients with definite CJD. DESIGN AND PATIENTS: Electrophysiologic examinations were performed on 16 patients with sporadic CJD. The diagnosis was confirmed by neuropathologic examinations (15 patients) or by intravital d

Peripheral and autonomic nervous system involvement in chronic GM2-gangliosidosis.

GM2-gangliosidosis (McKusick 268800 and 272800) is a rare hereditary, progressive disorder of ganglioside metabolism caused by deficiency of lysosomal beta-hexosaminidase (EC 3.2.1.52) activity. It is characterized by severe central nervous system involvement. Involvement of the peripheral and autonomic nervous system has been suspected but rarely documented in published case reports in the chronic form of the disease. Four patients, aged 24-29 years, with chronic GM2-gangliosidosis were examined prospectively for evidence of peripheral and autonomic nervous system dysfunction. All had nerve c

[Peripheral nervous system in children with chronic inflammatory otorhinolaryngologic diseases].

A comparative evaluation of central and vegetative nervous as well as cardiovascular systems in 20 normal children and 45 patients with ENT problems found out vegetative lability in 8 children. Three of them were from the control healthy group, 4 had tonsillitis, 1 purulent sinusitis. These children were referred to the vegetative dystonia risk group. In 28 patients (9.3 and 16 cases of purulent-polypous, purulent and decompensated tonsillitis, respectively) parasympathicotonic and sympathicotonic shifts revealed in the baseline vegetative tone and vegetative reactivity require adequate therap

Incretin Receptors in the Peripheral Nervous System: Implications for Obesity Treatment and Peripheral Neuropathy.

UNLABELLED: There is currently a revolution in the pharmacologic treatment of obesity and diabetes with newly available agonists of incretin receptors. The health benefits of these novel treatments include not only metabolic effects but also improvements in brain neurodegenerative conditions. Receptors for incretins have been described in the hypothalamic appetite regulatory center; however, their expression in the peripheral nervous system (PNS) has been largely overlooked, despite likely contributing important effects. For example, the PNS is essential for the control of numerous metabolical

Is heterotopic ossification getting nervous?: The role of the peripheral nervous system in heterotopic ossification.

Heterotopic ossification (HO), or de novo bone formation in soft tissue, is often observed following traumatic injury. Recent studies suggest that peripheral nerves may play a key functional role in this process. The results supporting a neurological basis for HO are examined in this article. Evidence supports the fact that BMPs released from bone matrix possess the capacity to induce HO. However, the process cannot be recapitulated using recombinant proteins without extremely high doses suggesting other components are required for this process. Study of injuries that increase risk for HO, i.e

Peripheral nervous system involvement accompanies central nervous system involvement in anti-glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) antibody-related disease.

BACKGROUND: Glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) is expressed by astrocytes in the central nervous system (CNS), but also by immature and regenerative Schwann cells in the peripheral nervous system (PNS). GFAP antibodies (GFAP-Abs) in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) have been mainly described in patients with meningoencephalomyelitis. We aimed to study PNS symptoms in patients with CSF GFAP-Abs. METHODS: We retrospectively included all patients tested positive for GFAP-Abs in the CSF by immunohistochemistry and confirmed by cell-based assay expressing human GFAPα since 2017, from two French refer

A Structured Approach to the Diagnosis of Peripheral Nervous System Disorders.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Neuroanatomic localization and pattern recognition can be used to diagnose both focal lesions and generalized disorders of the peripheral nervous system. This article describes the nature and pattern of sensory and motor deficits associated with lesions of specific spinal nerve roots, plexus, or peripheral nerves. It also describes the patterns of sensory and motor deficits that suggest multifocal or generalized disorders of the motor neurons, sensory neurons, and peripheral nerves. RECENT FINDINGS: The pattern of sensory and motor deficits may be used to distinguish lesion

[Hereditary predisposition to tumors of the central and peripheral nervous systems].

Some tumors of the central and peripheral nervous system may be associated with a cancer predisposition syndrome, either hereditary or occurring de novo. Such a syndrome is usually associated with multiple tumors occurring early in life. Patients with neurofibromatosis type 1 present with multiple neurofibromas, especially of the plexiform type (which may transform into malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor), and pilocytic astrocytomas of the optic pathways. Neurofibromatosis type 2 patients present with multiple schwannomas (typically bilateral vestibular schwannomas), meningiomas, and epen

Extracellular microRNAs as messengers in the central and peripheral nervous system.

MicroRNAs are small post-transcriptional regulators that play an important role in nervous system development, function and disease. More recently, microRNAs have been detected extracellularly and circulating in blood and other body fluids, where they are protected from degradation by encapsulation in vesicles, such as exosomes, or by association with proteins. These microRNAs are thought to be released from cells selectively through active processes and taken up by specific target cells within the same or in remote tissues where they are able to exert their repressive function. These characte

Barrier function in the peripheral and central nervous system-a review.

The peripheral (PNS) and central nervous system (CNS) are delicate structures, highly sensitive to homeostatic changes-and crucial for basic vital functions. Thus, a selection of barriers ensures the protection of the nervous system from noxious blood-borne or surrounding stimuli. In this chapter, anatomy and functioning of the blood-nerve (BNB), the blood-brain (BBB), and the blood-spinal cord barriers (BSCB) are presented and the key tight junction (TJ) proteins described: claudin-1, claudin-3, claudin-5, claudin-11, claudin-12, claudin-19, occludin, Zona occludens-1 (ZO-1), and tricellulin

State of the peripheral nervous system in patients with hypothalamic insufficiency.

An investigation was carried out by non-invasive techniques of the state of the peripheral nervous system in patients with a constitutional-acquired form of hypothalamic insufficiency. Ten healthy individuals were included in the control group. The presence of subclinical parasympathetic vegetative insufficiency was identified by cardiovascular tests. It was more marked in patients with an early onset of the neuroendocrine disturbances and longer course of the disease. In the opinion of the authors, this suggests the constitutional-acquired character of the vegetative disturbances. In addition

Rheumatic manifestations of disorders of the central and peripheral nervous system.

Many inflammatory rheumatic conditions may result, in part, from local release of sensory neuropeptides; substance P is currently the best studied of these. Various neurologic diseases that result in movement disorders continue to come to the attention of rheumatologists, primarily because of the pain and stiffness associated with them, and they are often misdiagnosed. Neuroarthropathies remain the most distinctive of the joint disorders that appear to result directly from neurologic injury, but little new information concerning these disorders has been generated in the past year.

Antihistaminic activity of stobadine in the peripheral and central nervous system.

Stobadine in low doses induced hyperpolarization, and in high doses depolarization and inhibition of transmission in the cat superior cervical ganglion. The ganglionic depolarizing action of histamine was inhibited by stobadine in low doses. Stobadine partially depressed ganglionic responses to isoprenaline, serotonin, M1 muscarinic agonist McN-A-343 and clonidine only in high doses. Stobadine administered into the third cerebral ventricle of anaesthetized cats evoked dose-dependent hypotension without changes in heart rate. Intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) administration of histamine evoked h

[Lesions of the peripheral nervous system in the treatment of breast cancer].

On the basis of our own patients, the anamnestic data and the neurological constellation in late radiogenic paresis (the most frequent peripheral nervous condition in treatment of mammary carcinoma) are described. A comparison with the situation in metastatic infiltration of the brachial plexus shows the great difficulties in differential diagnosis. Pain can be observed more frequently in metastatic plexus infiltration. The presence of a Horner syndrome can be regarded as decisive evidence for recurrent growth of a carcinoma. If a Horner syndrome is absent, tumor growth can be demonstrated con

[Operations on the peripheral nervous system in the treatment of spasmodic torticollis].

The aetiopathogenesis of spasmodic torticollis has not yet been explained. The problem of surgical treatment selection is also at issue. The authors present own observations in 5 cases treated by operations on the peripheral nervous system. In 3 cases a very good therapeutic results was obtained, in 2 cases the results was not satisfactory. A characteristic fact was appearance of ultimate improvement only several months after the operation, similarly as it is observed after stereotactic operations. In the light of own observations and a survey of the literature the authors reach the conclusion

Effects of ketamine on the peripheral autonomic nervous system of the rat.

The effects of ketamine (2-(o-chlorophenyl) 2-methylaminocyclohexanone) (2-50 mg/kg) on the responses of the pithed rat arterial pressure, anococcygeus muscle and colon to selective stimulation of the spinal autonomic outflows were examined. Ketamine depressed the vasopressor response produced by stimulation of the lumbar sympathetic outflow in a dose-dependent manner but did not significantly affect the pressor response to intravenous noradrenaline (NA) administration. Ketamine depressed the motor responses of the anococcygeus to stimulation of the pre-ganglionic lumbar sympathetic outflow or

Peripheral nervous system involvement in systemic lupus erythematosus: a review of the evidence.

In the past years the peripheral nervous system (PNS) involvement in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) has received little attention despite its potential significant impact. The true prevalence of PNS in SLE reported in studies is variable and strongly influenced by American College of Rheumatology (ACR) case definition that includes seven PNS manifestations (acute inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy, autonomic disorder, mononeuropathy, myasthenia gravis, cranial neuropathy, plexopathy and polyneuropathy). Other peripheral manifestations, such as chronic inflammatory demyelinat
