An explorative qualitative study of barriers to the use of health and mental health services among migrant female sex workers in Germany and needs for action.

BACKGROUND: Migrant female sex workers (MFSWs) can be exposed to various health risks due to their occupation, including mental and physical health, substance use, and experience of violence. However, they face substantial barriers to accessing healthcare services. The inadequate access to medical care for migrant female sex workers poses a challenge to the German healthcare system. RESEARCH AIMS: This qualitative study aimed to identify and analyze the barriers to the use of health and mental health services by migrant female sex workers in Berlin and what should be done to improve the acces

Recovery in England: transforming statutory services?

English mental health policy has explicitly supported a focus on recovery since 2001. More recently, this has been elaborated through policy support for social inclusion, employment and well-being. We review several drivers for this political orientation, including a refocusing of the role of health services as a whole from treating illnesses to helping people to make the most of their lives, the shift to greater power for the individual, reflected in personal social care and personal health budgets, and the evidence informing clinical guidelines issued by the National Institute for Health and

Home care in New York City: providers, payers, and clients.

Estimates based on 1980 data indicate that almost two-thirds of the disabled elderly in New York City receive care only from informal sources. Another one-fifth use a combination of informal and formal sources of care. Thus, only about 15 percent are exclusively dependent on various agencies and programs that constitute the formal home care system. Over 200 organizations in 1986 offered some form of home care service in New York City. Among these were at least 100 proprietary businesses, 61 nonprofit personal care agencies, and 36 nonprofit certified home health agencies. In 1984, 166,739 diff

Factors influencing the capacity of healthcare providers to deliver disability-inclusive maternity care services: A scoping review.

OBJECTIVE: Current evidence highlights that women with disabilities experience challenges in accessing maternity care. Improving access requires an understanding of the factors influencing the capacity of healthcare providers to provide disability-inclusive care. Although providing maternity care services for women with disabilities has been reported to be a rewarding experience, numerous factors may impact health care providers' capacity to do so. Limited evidence, especially from low and middle-income countries (LMICs), undermines our understanding of this issue and how to respond. This scop

A systematic scoping review of primary health care service outreach for homeless populations.

BACKGROUND: Homeless populations (HPs) have difficulties obtaining necessary medical care, and primary health care service outreach (PHSO) might be useful to bridge this gap. OBJECTIVE: Using the Centre for Evidence-Based Management Critically Appraised Topics framework, to provide systematic evidence of the usefulness of PHSO interventions for HPs. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted in 4 electronic databases: PubMed, Web of Science, CINAHL, and Cochrane (publication dates between January 1980 and November 2020). In total, 2,872 articles were identified. Primary research about PHSO f

The relationship between university student help-seeking intentions and well-being outcomes.

University represents a time of both great uncertainty and change as well as a time of opportunity and learning. University students represent a population both at a higher risk of experiencing poor mental health and diagnosis and a population with relatively greater access and communication of both mental health literacy resources and mental health support services. Despite this, we consistently see low intention of help-seeking for mental health services or health services, with a clear preference shown for personal contacts such as friends or parents. To understand help-seeking intentions a

Local government health services in interwar England: problems of quantification and interpretation.

This article provides a critical discussion of recent work on local government health care and health services in interwar England. A literature review examines case study approaches and comparative quantitative surveys, highlighting conventional and revisionist interpretations. Noting the differing selection criteria evident in some works, it argues that studies based upon a limited number of personal health services provide an insufficient basis for assessing local health activity and policy. There follows a regional study demonstrating various discrepancies between health financing data in

An Evaluation of co-Delivered Foundational BPD Training With Health Service Staff.

Individuals with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) are frequent users of mental health services and may be perceived negatively by mental health professionals. Educational training has been associated with improved attitudes towards individuals with this diagnosis, but few interventions have been delivered in collaboration with lived experience experts. This study evaluated an educational intervention for mental health professionals that was delivered with lived experience experts. The impact of the training on staff attitudes, namely personal competence, empathy and treatment optimism was

Engaging with discursive complexities in mental health accessibility: Implications for acquired brain injury.

The psychosocial needs of people with acquired brain injury (ABI) have been neglected based on ableist assumptions of incapability to participate in mental health treatment. Although people without disabilities benefit from evidence-based mental health supports, these treatments remain inaccessible for those with disabilities after ABI. Discursive simplifications used in dominant conceptualisations of health and disability may maintain this inaccessibility. This paper examines the role of discursive constraints in concealing the complexities of ABI recovery, undermining the gradients of mental

Post opioid overdose outreach by public health and public safety agencies: Exploration of emerging programs in Massachusetts.

BACKGROUND: Opioid overdose is a significant public health problem. Collaborative programs between local public health and public safety agencies have emerged to connect overdose survivors and their personal networks with harm reduction and addiction treatment services following a non-fatal overdose event. This study explored the prevalence of these programs in Massachusetts and the different ways they have been structured and function. METHODS: We sent an online screening questionnaire to police and fire departments in all 351 communities in Massachusetts to find instances in which they coll

Support for school-based reproductive health services among South Carolina voters.

In 1997 a statewide random digit-dialed telephone survey of 534 South Carolina registered voters was conducted to determine level of support for school-based reproductive health services. Results indicated most voters supported services in secondary schools that would provide students with information and counseling about contraceptive methods and refer students to community-based agencies for abstinence education and counseling. Voters were less supportive of reproductive health services that would diagnose or treat sexually transmitted diseases, test for pregnancy, refer students to communit

Maternal and newborn health needs for women with walking disabilities; "the twists and turns": a case study in Kibuku District Uganda.

BACKGROUND: In Uganda 13% of persons have at least one form of disability. The United Nations' Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities guarantees persons with disabilities the same level of right to access quality and affordable healthcare as persons without disability. Understanding the needs of women with walking disabilities is key in formulating flexible, acceptable and responsive health systems to their needs and hence to improve their access to care. This study therefore explores the maternal and newborn health (MNH)-related needs of women with walking disabilities in Kibuk

Level of satisfaction and sexual and reproductive health needs of deaf persons in Ghana: a sequential explanatory mixed method study.

BACKGROUND: The intersection between deafness and culture in sub-Saharan African contexts such as Ghana has culminated in restricted access to sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services. While some attention has been given to the barriers faced by deaf persons in accessing SRH services, discussion of their needs and satisfaction with SRH services is at an embryonic stage. This lends support to the use of sequential mixed-method study design to assess the level of satisfaction and SRH needs of deaf persons. METHODS: This study was guided by explanatory sequential mixed-method study design.

Local Health Departments. An underrecognized resource for women at high risk for preterm birth.

Every locale in the United States is covered by a public health entity, generally known as the local health department, which is an arm of local, state, and federal governments, and is designed to protect, promote, and preserve the health of the population. To meet these responsibilities, health departments often become providers of personal health-care services, including prenatal care. The common assumption that these publicly funded prenatal services are in some way inferior to privately secured care is unfounded. Not only do local health department clinics provide quality care, they also e

Needs of transgender children and adolescents presenting to an urban gender health program.

BACKGROUND: Youth who identify as transgender and gender diverse (TGD) are increasingly presenting to pediatric providers. Gender-affirming surgery is often delayed until after a patient reaches the age of majority; however, patients may desire surgery at a younger age. OBJECTIVE: We explore the specific clinical needs of this vulnerable population, including surgical requests. STUDY DESIGN: We present a cross-sectional study of patient intake interviews at time of presentation to our gender health program from 2017 to 2020. We summarize patient demographics, medical histories, and gender-af
