Work disability among persons with musculoskeletal conditions.

We examined the question of what distinguishes persons with musculoskeletal disease who continue working after onset of illness from those who do not. We also investigated why persons with musculoskeletal disease have high rates of work disability relative to those with other chronic conditions of comparable activity limitation. Data regarding 3,100 persons with limitations in activities and chronic disease who were respondents to the 1978 Social Security Administration Survey of Disabled and Non-Disabled Adults were used. Persons with musculoskeletal disease who stopped working had poorer ove

Accessibility evaluation of urban basic public service facilities for persons with disabilities: a case study of central Beijing.

In urban planning practice, urban basic public service facilities are essential spatial carriers for advancing social fairness and public wellbeing. Traditional methods of resource allocation that are primarily motivated by supply efficiency are facing new difficulties as China's urban spatial structure shifts from incremental expansion to stock optimization. As fundamental tenets of modern urban planning, equity and justice demand a more inclusive reevaluation of facility allocation, especially with regard to service accessibility and equitable for vulnerable populations. Beijing was chosen a

Enhancing entrepreneurial skills of persons with disabilities (PWDs) through immersive learning in the metaverse: a design thinking approach.

PURPOSE: The double threat of unequal job opportunities for persons with disabilities (PWDs) and the lack of professional training to use innovative technologies at work have led to multiple calls to promote inclusivity at work. PWDs are underrepresented in the workforce and often face discrimination by employers. One way PWDs have responded to their limited employment within organisations is by pursuing self-employment or business creation. Higher education institutions (HEIs) and technical and vocational education and training (TVET) institutions are expected to embrace new pedagogies facili

Navigating Conviviality and Co-Viviality: Persons With Intellectual Disabilities and Mental Health Problems' Home Making in Residential Care.

BACKGROUND: Recent numbers of the share of residential services in the Flemish care reveal that implementing personal budgets did not ignite a large-scale departure from residential care and that the use of full-time residential care even increased. Despite incentives to leave residential care, people with intellectual disabilities and mental health problems (PIDMHP) in particular continue to keep living there (or choose to keep living there). Gaining insight into the possibilities PIDMHP living in residential care have for making a home is of importance in the ever-continuing inquiry and disc

Design and development of mobility equipment for persons with disabilities in low-resource and tropical settings: bamboo wheelchairs.

PURPOSE: For persons with disabilities in low-resource and tropical settings, barriers to mobility and physical activity are steep. The aim of this study was to develop and test two low-cost, durable, sustainable, purpose-built wheelchair prototypes to support wheelchair users in low-resource and tropical settings. These bamboo wheelchairs, nicknamed African Chairs by Ghanaian daily manual wheelchair users who tested the devices, adopt two designs: an urban-targeted and a rural-targeted design. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The rural-targeted design incorporated stability as its key design property

Habilitation and assistive devices for persons with disabilities: a new approach to respect for human rights and inclusion.

In recent years, the development of assistive technologies has profoundly changed the idea of what it means to be human and what humans are capable of, in particular for persons with disabilities; the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) highlights that disability is a social construction. New concepts have been developed, such as empowerment, enabling, inclusion, habilitation, and human rights, that have changed the meaning of making tools available to encourage full participation, hoping to solve challenges of today, such as barriers, obstacles, and d

A national survey on COVID-19 infection in Italian retirement homes for older adults and persons with disabilities.

INTRODUCTION: Older people and individuals with chronic illnesses living in long-term care facilities are at increased risk of infections due to the care setting, resulting in an increased probability of contracting SARS-CoV-2 and experiencing severe sequelae during the COVID-19 pandemic. To limit viral transmission, facilities adopted different policies according to national and regional prevention strategies, often reducing social contacts and promoting public health measures. We therefore conducted a national survey to investigate the impact of COVID-19 infection in Italian retirement homes

Prevalence and experience of violence against persons with disabilities in Bangladesh: findings from a nationwide mixed-method study.

Current prevalence of disability in Bangladesh stands at 7.14%. Due to various misconceptions, stigma, and lack of policies, they are more vulnerable to violence and abuse from perpetrators. However, there is a paucity of research on the prevalence of emotional, physical, and sexual violence in the country. To address this knowledge gap, the current study aims to estimate the prevalence and explore the experiences of emotional abuse, physical, and sexual violence of persons with disabilities with their coping strategies. This study adopted a mixed-method sequential design comprising qualitativ

Stigma of persons with disabilities in South Africa: Uncovering pathways from discrimination to depression and low self-esteem.

Despite the fact that universal inclusion is a basic principle of the Sustainable Development Goals, the inclusion of persons with disabilities in humanitarian interventions and development policies remains elusive. Persons with disabilities face high risks of poverty, poor nutrition, limited inclusion in labor markets and poor mental health as a result. Stigma is likely to play a negative role in this regard and yet, no study has investigated the impact of stigma on depression and self-esteem of persons with disabilities. To address this gap in the literature, we conducted in June 2017 a rand

Inclusion of persons living with disabilities in a district-wide sanitation programme: A cross-sectional study in rural Malawi.

Community-led total sanitation (CLTS) is embraced as a key strategy to achieve universal sanitation coverage (Sustainable Development Goal 6.2). Although inclusion is identified as a predictor of CLTS success, people living with disabilities are often excluded from community sanitation programmes and there is limited research exploring CLTS participation amongst people living with disabilities. This study aims to explore the extent to which people living with disabilities participated in a CLTS intervention delivered in rural Malawi using standard approaches. This cross-sectional study was con

Sexual lives and reproductive health outcomes among persons with disabilities: a mixed-methods study in two districts of Ghana.

INTRODUCTION: People with disabilities (PwDs) constitute a large and diverse group within the global population, however, their sexual and reproductive health (SRH) needs are often neglected, particularly in low-and middle-income countries. This may result in adverse outcomes, such as sexually transmitted infections (STIs), unintended pregnancies, and experience of interpersonal violence (IV). This study aimed to assess the factors that influence the sexual lives of PwDs in two districts of Ghana. METHODS: A sequential explanatory mixed-methods study design was used to collect data from PwDs.

ADEPT-CARE: A pilot, student-led initiative to improve care for persons with disabilities via a novel teaching tool.

BACKGROUND: Over one-quarter of United States adults live with a disability. Despite persistent ableism, defined as discrimination and prejudice against people with disabilities, in healthcare, disability-focused training remains largely absent from medical education. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to pilot and evaluate a novel teaching mnemonic (ADEPT-CARE) for performing a comprehensive history and physical exam for disabled patients. METHODS: In Spring 2022, first-year medical students at a suburban Mid-Atlantic institution could electively participate in a learning module that incl
