What does "disability" mean for medical students? An exploration of the words medical students associate with the term "disability".

CONTEXT: Disability teaching is a core theme in undergraduate medical education. Medical students bring a range of experiences of disability to their medical training. AIM: The principal aim of this study was to explore the words that medical students associate with the term "disability" and to consider how the resulting information could inform teaching. A secondary aim was to see if a short disability course changed the word associations. METHODS: Students were asked to write down 2 words that came to mind when they heard the word "disability", before and after a 4-day course in disability

Vision and hearing loss in older adults: "Double trouble".

Recent studies indicate that by age seventy, 21% of the people living in the United States have both vision and hearing loss. Dual sensory loss in the elderly has a significant effect on an individual's ability to socialize, communicate with others, and live independently. This article addresses the issues faced by older individuals who are hard of hearing and blind or visually impaired. Common causes and behavioral signs of hearing and vision loss are discussed. An emphasis is placed on the functional implications of the dual sensory impairment and possible accommodations and communication st

Role of vision in static balance in persons with and without visual impairments.

BACKGROUND: Vision is one of the elements of the system responsible for maintaining static balance. Any visual impairments or conditions hampering the reception of visual stimuli may affect static balance. It would be interesting to identify to what extent people with different degrees of dysfunction and in different conditions are able to compensate for the inability to receive visual stimuli while maintaining balance. AIM: The aim of this study was to determine the role of the vision in maintaining static balance. This study sought to assess balance and the degree of compensation when the p

Assessing same/different judgments in individuals with severe intellectual disabilities: a status report.

This report summarizes state-of-the-art approaches for assessing visual stimulus same/different judgments in individuals with severe intellectual disabilities. Methods are described that permit one to conduct assessments on a population-wide basis, excluding few if any participants due to failure to acquire necessary baseline performances. Methodological investigations summarized here indicate that one can obtain reliable same/different judgments with a variety of stimuli in virtually anyone for whom a basal score on the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test can be obtained. This approach includes j

Intelligent feature fusion with dynamic graph convolutional recurrent network for robust object detection to assist individuals with disabilities in a smart Iot edge-cloud environment.

Smart Internet of Things (IoT)-edge-cloud computing defines intelligent systems where IoT devices create data at the network's edge, which is then further processed and analyzed in local edge devices before transmission to the cloud for deeper insights and storage. Visual impairment, like blindness, has a deep effect on a person's psychological and cognitive functions. So, the use of assistive models can help mitigate the adverse effects and improve the quality of life for individuals who are blind. Much current research mainly concentrates on mobility, navigation, and object detection (OD) in

Change in vision, visual disability, and health after cataract surgery.

PURPOSE: Cataract surgery improves vision and visual functioning; the effect on general health is not established. We investigated if vision, visual functioning, and general health follow the same trajectory of change the year after cataract surgery and if changes in vision explain changes in visual disability and general health. METHODS: One-hundred forty-eight persons, with a mean (SD) age of 78.9 (5.0) years (70% bilateral surgery), were assessed before and 6 weeks and 12 months after surgery. Visual disability and general health were assessed by the CatQuest-9SF and the Short Formular-36.

An intelligent fusion-based transfer learning model with artificial protozoa optimiser for enhancing gesture recognition to aid visually impaired people.

Generally, the interaction of gestures presents a set of benefits to persons with disabilities, from improving motor, social, and cognitive skills to delivering a secure and controlled atmosphere for engaging in real-world scenarios. Automatic detection methods, such as hand gesture recognition (GR), are among the most active research fields. Hand gestures, particularly in the form of sign language (SL), are one of the effective modes of non-verbal interaction and a stimulating area of research because they can simplify communication and serve as a standard method of communication, employed in

Computer-Vision- and Edge-Enabled Real-Time Assistance Framework for Visually Impaired Persons with LPWAN Emergency Signaling.

In recent decades, various assistive technologies have emerged to support visually impaired individuals. However, there remains a gap in terms of solutions that provide efficient, universal, and real-time capabilities by combining robust object detection, robust communication, continuous data processing, and emergency signaling in dynamic environments. In many existing systems, trade-offs are made in range, latency, or reliability when applied in changing outdoor or indoor scenarios. In this study, we propose a comprehensive framework specifically tailored for visually impaired people, integra

Blind people can actively manipulate virtual objects with a novel tactile device.

Frequently in rehabilitation, visually impaired persons are passive agents of exercises with fixed environmental constraints. In fact, a printed tactile map, i.e. a particular picture with a specific spatial arrangement, can usually not be edited. Interaction with map content, instead, facilitates the learning of spatial skills because it exploits mental imagery, manipulation and strategic planning simultaneously. However, it has rarely been applied to maps, mainly because of technological limitations. This study aims to understand if visually impaired people can autonomously build objects tha
