In the bag IOL dislocation following uncomplicated phacoemulsification.

We present two cases of early post-operative, in the bag intraocular lens (IOL) dislocation following uncomplicated phacoemulsification. Dislocation occurred in the presence of capsular fibrosis and anterior capsular phimosis. One patient was a known diabetic, the other diagnosed with pseudoexfoliation syndrome. These are recognised risk factors for capsular fibrosis. Surgical management included enlargement of the anterior capsular opening using intraocular micro-scissors and vitreous cutter to facilitate the removal of the dislocated IOL from the capsular bag. Both patients achieved a satisf

Comparison of tilt and decentration between phacoemulsification and phacotrabeculectomy.

Wolfram syndrome 1 (WS1) is a rare genetic disorder caused by mutations in the WFS1 gene leading to a wide spectrum of clinical dysfunctions, among which blindness, diabetes, and neurological deficits are the most prominent. WFS1 encodes for the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) resident transmembrane protein wolframin with multiple functions in ER processes. However, the WFS1-dependent etiopathology in retinal cells is unknown. Herein, we showed that Wfs1 mutant mice developed early retinal electrophysiological impairments followed by marked visual loss. Interestingly, axons and myelin disruption in

Visual outcome and complications of residents learning phacoemulsification.

The increasing popularity of phacoemulsification in our country raises important training issues. We prospectively analyzed the incidence of complications and visual outcomes in the initial 70 phacoemulsifications (70 patients) performed by the first two residents learning phacoemulsification in our training programme. Both were experienced in standard (manual) extracapsular cataract extraction. Postoperative follow up of 6 weeks or longer was available in 59 eyes. The 11 patients (11 eyes) lost to follow up did not have any intra-operative complications. The overall incidence of vitreous loss

[Phacoemulsification of the dislocated lens nucleus in the vitreous body].

BACKGROUND: one of the most intriguing complications in phacoemulsification is the rupturing of the posterior capsule with los of the nucleus into the vitreous. As severe inflammation will follow, the removal of the nucleus is mandatory. Several methods have been described. Our approach has the advantage to minimize some of the imminent risks. PATIENTS AND METHOD: On 15 eyes phacoemulsification in the vitreous cavity following vitrectomy has been carried out. Supporting liquids like viscoelastic substances or fluordecalin were not necessary. RESULTS: There was no indication of retinal damage

[Comparison of phacoemulsification and planned extracapsular cataract extraction].

40% of cataract surgeons in German speaking countries use phacoemulsification as the procedure of choice for cataract extraction while the other 60% still use the planned extracapsular extraction. The more procedures a surgeon performs the stronger is the tendency toward performing phacoemulsification. The opening technique of the anterior capsule is chosen accordingly: for phacoemulsification capsulorhexis is preferred, while for the planned extracapsular extraction can opener - or letter box - technique is usually done. The length of the sclero-corneal incision is 3.2 mm in phacoemulsificati

Anterior Hyaloid Staining With Trypan Blue During Phacoemulsification.

A semi-professional football player diagnosed with a left eye cataract was scheduled for phacoemulsification. Extensive preoperative assessment identified no risk factors. A trypan blue-assisted capsulorhexis was planned. Following anterior chamber wash-out with a balanced salt solution and intracameral application of an ophthalmic viscosurgical device, spontaneous dye migration into the vitreous cavity was noticed. We would like to present this rare complication in the absence of evident zonular pathology and its immediate management.
