Citric acid (CA) and nitrogen (N) fertilizers have been widely applied to enhance phytoremediation of various contaminated soils, yet their combined effects and underlying mechanisms in cadmium (Cd)-polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) co-contaminated systems remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated the combined effects of CA and ammonium nitrate on the phytoremediation of Cd-phenanthrene (Phe) co-contaminated soil using marigold (Tagetes patula L.), with random forest, mantel tests, and structural equation modeling employed to explore hypothesized pathways and associations. The result

Herbal medicines are particularly vulnerable to contamination by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) due to their relatively long growth cycles and multistep processing. This contamination may compromise the efficacy and safety of the prepared herbal slices. The current work innovatively synthesized a hierarchical composite of MXene@Cu-BTC/PPy carbon with MWCNTs@MoS2 (MCuP350/MWCNTs@MoS2) through a sequential in situ growth approach. The material was characterized by using Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM), High-Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HR-TEM), X-ray

Biochar is increasingly applied to cropland, yet co-occurring dissolved organic matter (DOM) jointly regulates polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) fate and food-safety risks. We amended phenanthrene-spiked agricultural soil with wheat-straw biochar and three DOM types (citric acid, oxalic acid and humic acid) and linked biodegradation to bioavailable pools and microbial responses. Citric and oxalic acids increased bioavailable fractions and raised microbial removal from 43.98 ± 0.72% (control) to 55.84 ± 0.87% and 54.74 ± 2.29%, whereas humic acid lowered effective bioavailability and redu

Environmental concentrations of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon phenanthrene can become elevated with petroleum processing, industrial activities, and urban run-off into waterbodies. However, mechanisms related to its neurotoxicity in fish are not fully described. Here, we exposed adult fathead minnows (FHM) to an average measured concentration of 202 μg phenanthrene/L over a 47-d period. Behaviors of male and female FHM were assessed using a novel aquarium test. Phenanthrene exposed females displayed equilibrium loss, while phenanthrene exposed males spent less time in the aquarium bottom

Hydraulic fracturing has become widely used in recent years to access vast global unconventional sources of oil and gas. This process involves the injection of proprietary mixtures of water and chemicals to fracture shale formations and extract the hydrocarbons trapped within. These injection fluids, along with minerals, hydrocarbons, and saline waters present within the formations being drilled into, return to the surface as flowback and produced water (FPW). FPW is a highly complex mixture, containing metals, salts and clay, as well as many organic chemicals, including polycyclic aromatic hy

The fate of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) determines their potential risk in soil, which may be directly affected by abiotic conditions and indirectly through the changes in decomposer communities. In comparison, the indirect effects on the fate remain largely elusive. In this study, the fate of phenanthrene and benzo[a]pyrene and the corresponding bacterial changes were investigated in three contaminated farmland soils using a 14C tracer method and Miseq sequencing. The results showed that most benzo[a]pyrene was consistently extractable with dichloromethane (DCM) after the 60-day i

This paper investigates the effect of solvent-induced conformational changes of poly(3,6-phenanthrene) on their two-photon absorption (2PA). Such effect was studied employing the wavelength-tunable femtosecond Z-scan technique and modeled using the sum-over-essential states approach. We observed a strong reduction of the 2PA cross-section when the sample was prepared in hexane (poor solvent) in comparison to chloroform (good solvent), which is related to the conformation adopted by the polymer in each case. In chloroform it adopts a random coil conformation, as opposed to the one-handed helix

Pseudomonas sp. strain PPD can metabolize phenanthrene as the sole source of carbon and energy via the 'phthalic acid' route. The key enzyme, 1-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid dioxygenase (1-HNDO, EC 1.13.11.38), was purified to homogeneity using a 3-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid (3-H2NA)-affinity matrix. The enzyme was a homotetramer with a native molecular mass of 160 kDa and subunit molecular mass of approximately 39 kDa. It required Fe(II) as the cofactor and was specific for 1-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid (1-H2NA), with K(m) 13.5 microM and V(max) 114 micromol min(-1) mg(-1). 1-HNDO failed to show activi

Phenanthrene (Phe) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) are among the most frequently detected contaminants in the coastal environment of China. However, comparative studies on the toxic effects of these two chemicals in fish are limited. This study examined biomarker responses in Chinese tongue sole (Cynoglossus semilaevis) larvae exposed to sublethal Phe/PFOS (10 and 100 μg/L) for 7 days. The results showed that both Phe and PFOS significantly altered antioxidant indexes, such as activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and peroxidase (POD), and the detoxification metabolic p

Foliar uptake, as an important pathway of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) accumulation in winter wheat, has a great contribution to wheat PAHs, which mainly depends on atmospheric PAHs level. An indoor simulation experiment was conducted to explore the effects of foliar exposure to PAHs at different growth stages on PAHs uptake in wheat. Three levels (0, 0.75, 4.5 mg L-1) of mixed solution of three PAHs (Σ3PAHs) including naphthalene (NAP), phenanthrene (PHE), and benzo(b)fluoranthene (BbF) were sprayed on leaves of two varieties (Yunong, YN; Xiaoyan, XY) of winter wheat (Triticum aest

Recent emergence of direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) targeting hepatitis C virus (HCV) proteins has considerably enhanced the success of antiviral therapy. However, the appearance of DAA-resistant-associated variants is a cause of treatment failure, and the high cost of DAAs renders the therapy not accessible in countries with inadequate medical infrastructures. Therefore, the search for new inhibitors with a lower cost of production should be pursued. In this context, the crude extract of Juncus maritimus Lam. was shown to exhibit high antiviral activity against HCV in cell culture. Bio-guided

A multi-level fuzzy-factorial inference approach was proposed to examine the sorption behavior of phenanthrene on palygorskite modified with a gemini surfactant. Fuzzy set theory was used to determine five experimentally controlled environmental factors with triangular membership functions, including initial concentration, added humid acid dose, ionic strength, temperature, and pH. The statistical significance of factors and their interactions affecting the sorption process was revealed through a multi-level factorial experiment. Initial concentration, ionic strength, and pH were identified as

Soil and sediment materials having organic matter matrixes of different geochemical character were examined with respect to their sorption and desorption of phenanthrene in the presence of order-of-magnitude larger concentrations of trichloroethylene (TCE) and dichlorobenzene (DCB). These co-contaminants depressed phenanthrene sorption in the lowest residual solution phase concentration ranges of that target solute investigated, whereas in its highest residual concentration regions phenanthrene sorption was either not affected or was actually enhanced. In both concentration ranges, the effects

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are dominant constituents of the water-soluble fraction of crude oil and are known to disrupt fish cardiac function, yet their consequences for cellular contractility remain poorly characterised. We investigated the acute effects of phenanthrene (P) and 3-methylphenanthrene (3-MP) at 1-10 μM on single rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) ventricular cardiomyocytes, measuring sarcomere length dynamics, cytosolic Ca2+ transients, L-type Ca2+ current (ICa,L) and actin-myosin sliding velocity. P reduced the maximum velocity of sarcomere shortening from 1.57 t

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are ubiquitous environmental pollutants that can cross the placental barrier, yet evidence linking internal exposure to specific PAH metabolites with fetal growth restriction (FGR) remains scarce and mechanistically unclear. In a nested case-control study within a prospective birth cohort in Guangzhou, China (100 FGR cases and 194 matched controls), we quantified maternal urinary hydroxylated and aminated PAH metabolites in first-trimester samples by HPLC-MS/MS. Conditional logistic regression with machine learning was used to identify PAH metabolites as

Phenanthrene (PHE) is a typical polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon compound that is ubiquitous in the environment and accumulates in aquatic products, thereby posing a risk to food safety. Oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPC) is widely distributed powerful antioxidants with potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. This study aimed to evaluate the alleviating effects of dietary OPC on oxidative stress, inflammatory suppression, and tissue damage caused by PHE exposure in loach (Misgurnus anguillicaudatus). In the study, loach was continuously exposed to 2.36 mg/L PHE for 28 days, after w

The Electrokinetic-Fenton (EK-Fenton) process is a powerful technology to remediate organic-contaminated soil. The behavior of salts and acids introduced for the pH control has significant influence on the H(2)O(2) stabilization and destruction of organic contaminants. In this study, the effects of the type and concentration of acids, which were introduced at the anode, were investigated for the treatment of clayey soil contaminated with phenanthrene. In experiments with H(2)SO(4) as the anode solution, H(2)O(2) concentration in the anode reservoir decreased due to reaction between reduced spe

In this study, the feasibility of a two-stage treatment process for the remediation of soil contaminated with phenanthrene as a model polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) has been assessed at laboratory scale. The initial stage of the process involved contacting contaminated soil with a solution of Tween 80 to enhance the desorption of phenanthrene from soil. In order to simulate a flushing process this initial stage was carried out in a washing packed-bed soil column. At the optimised conditions the total phenanthrene removal attained a value of almost 65% after 3 days. The second stage of t

Phenanthroindolizidine alkaloids (PIA) are a class of natural nitrogen-containing secondary metabolites characterized by a unique fused five-ring skeleton. They possess multiple modification sites and exhibit a wide range of pharmacological activities. These compounds are widely distributed in various plants and some herbivorous insects, though they occur in very low content. To date, over a hundred individual compounds have been isolated from natural sources. In vitro and in vivo studies have demonstrated that PIA possesses a variety of pharmacological effects, including antitumor, anti-infla
