Phenol-assisted depolymerization of Acacia mangium tannin for strong and fast-curing biomass-based phenolic resins.

Traditional phenolic resins have issues such as high petroleum consumption and high curing temperatures. This study is the first to use cost-effective phenol as a nucleophile to depolymerize Acacia mangium tannin (AMT) under acidic conditions at 60 °C. Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/ Ionization Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS) showed that the polymerization degree of the depolymerized Acacia mangium tannin (AMT-d) decreased from 9 to 2. Subsequently, depolymerized Acacia mangium tannin-phenol-formaldehyde resin (DT-PF) was prepared by replacing 50% of phenol with AMT-d. The th

Engineering the substrate scope of the thermostable phenolic acid decarboxylase N31 towards sterically hindered phenolic acids.

Phenolic acid decarboxylases (PADs) convert bio-based hydroxycinnamic acids into valuable hydroxystyrene monomers under mild reaction conditions. These compounds are in high demand in polymer production, cosmetics, and flavoring. Especially 4-vinyl syringol, the decarboxylation product from sinapic acid, generates polymers with similar thermal stability and higher glass transition temperatures than vinyl guaiacol, the decarboxylation product from ferulic acid. However, natural PAD enzymes typically show slow turnover with sinapic acid. In addition, establishing a viable industrial process requ

Bioconversion of phenolic acids from hydrolyzed sugarcane bagasse into vinyl derivatives by recombinant phenolic acid decarboxylase.

Several commercially important vinyl phenolic compounds can be produced by enzymatic decarboxylation of phenolic acids such as ferulic and p-coumaric acids which can be extracted from agro-industrial waste. Phenolic acid decarboxylase is an enzyme that acts in the decarboxylation of these acids to 4-vinylguaiacol and 4-vinylphenol, respectively. In this study, the gene encoding phenolic acid decarboxylase from Klebsiella pneumoniae TD 4.7 was isolated and identified as a 504 bp fragment, encoding a polypeptide of 167 amino acid residues. A 98 % predicted amino acid sequence identity between fe

Improving the Reactivity of Sugarcane Bagasse Kraft Lignin by a Combination of Fractionation and Phenolation for Phenol-Formaldehyde Adhesive Applications.

The low reactivity of lignin hinders its application as a phenol substitute in phenol-formaldehyde (PF) resin. Therefore, the combination of fractionation and phenolation was adopted to enhance the reactivity of lignin for preparing a phenol-formaldehyde resin adhesive. Sugarcane bagasse kraft lignin and its fractions were employed to replace 40 wt% of phenol to prepare a PF adhesive. The fractionation increased the reactivity of lignin, however the as-prepared lignin-based PF (LPF) hardly met its application requirements as an adhesive. Therefore, the phenolation of lignin under an acidic con

Phenolic Release during In Vitro Digestion of Cold and Hot Extruded Noodles Supplemented with Starch and Phenolic Extracts.

Dietary phenolic compounds must be released from the food matrix in the gastrointestinal tract to play a bioactive role, the release of which is interfered with by food structure. The release of phenolics (unbound and bound) of cold and hot extruded noodles enriched with phenolics (2.0%) during simulated in vitro gastrointestinal digestion was investigated. Bound phenolic content and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis were utilized to characterize the intensity and manner of starch-phenolic complexation during the preparation of extruded noodles. Hot extrusion induced the formation of more compl

A convenient screening method to differentiate phenolic skin whitening tyrosinase inhibitors from leukoderma-inducing phenols.

BACKGROUND: Tyrosinase is able to oxidize a great number of phenols and catechols to form ortho-quinones. Ortho-quinones are highly reactive compounds that exert cytotoxicity through binding with thiol enzymes and the production of reactive oxygen species. Certain phenolic (and catecholic) compounds are known to induce contact/occupational leukoderma through activation to ortho-quinones. OBJECTIVE: We report a convenient screening method to follow the oxidation of those leukoderma-inducing phenols by mushroom tyrosinase. METHODS: Oxidation of phenolic compounds by mushroom tyrosinase was fol

Methodology optimization for quantification of total phenolics and individual phenolic acids in sweetpotato (Ipomoea batatas L.) roots.

Phenolic acids are one of the several classes of naturally occurring antioxidant compounds found in sweetpotatoes. Simplified, robust, and rapid methodologies were optimized to quantify total and individual phenolic acids in sweetpotato roots. Total phenolic acid content was quantified spectrophotometrically using both Folin-Denis and Folin-Ciocalteu reagents. The Folin-Ciocalteu reagent gave an overestimation of total phenolic acids due to the absorbance of interfering compounds (that is, reducing sugars and ascorbic acid). Individual phenolic acids were quantified by high-performance liquid

Visible-Light-Induced Copper-Catalyzed Coupling Reaction of Aryl Halides with Phenols at Room Temperature.

This work describes a visible-light-induced Ullmann C-O coupling between aryl halides and phenols at room temperature without an external photocatalyst. Preliminary mechanistic studies suggest that the in situ-formed LCu(I)-phenoxide complex functions as both a photosensitizer and an active catalyst. The synthetic utility of this photoinduced Ullmann-type coupling was demonstrated by a gram-scale reaction with maintained high yield and successful late-stage functionalization of pharmaceutically relevant compounds in good yields.

Lignans and phenols with potential anti-inflammatory effect from the stems of Mallotus paxii Pamp.

Phytochemical investigation of the stems of Mallotus paxii Pamp. led to the isolation and identification of four new compounds, including three neolignans (1-3) and one phenol (13), along with eight known neolignans (4-12) and one known phenol (14). Their structures were determined by spectroscopic methods, including NMR, MS and ECD analyses. Bioassay demonstrated that malloapelin A (4) exhibited a most potent anti-inflammatory activity to NO release with IC50 value of 21.32 μM. Furthermore, malloapelin A (4) markedly decreased the secretion of TNF-α, iNOS, and NF-κB and inhibited the expressi

CuI-Zeolite Catalysis for Biaryl Synthesis via Homocoupling Reactions of Phenols or Aryl Boronic Acids.

Due to the importance of biaryls as natural products, drugs, agrochemicals, dyes, or organic electronic materials, a green alternative biaryl synthesis has been developed based on easy-to-prepare and cheap copper(I)-exchanged zeolite catalysts. CuI-USY proved to efficiently catalyze the direct homocoupling of either phenols or aryl boronic acids under simple and practical conditions. The CuI-USY-catalyzed oxidative homocoupling of phenols could conveniently be performed under air either in warm methanol or water with good to high yields. In methanol, a small amount of Cs2CO3 was required, whil

Carbocation Mechanism Revelation of Molecular Iodine-Mediated Dehydrogenative Aromatization of Substituted Cyclic Ketones to Phenols.

Dehydrogenative aromatization (DA) of cyclic ketones is central to the development of functionalized aromatic precursors and hydrogen transfer-related technologies. Traditional DA strategies require precious metals with oxidants and are typically performed at high temperatures (100-150 °C) to overcome the high energy barrier of aliphatic C-H bond activation. Recently, a mild alternative approach based on I2 has been proposed to realize DA on substituted unsaturated cyclic ketones under ambient conditions. However, depending on the solvent, the product selectivity may vary between phenol ether

Exploiting Chloroform-COware Chemistry for Pd-Catalyzed Carbonylation of Naturally Occurring and Medicinally Relevant Phenols.

In this study, a ligand-free palladium-catalyzed carbonylation of phenols is conducted under ambient conditions, utilizing the "Chloroform-COware" chemistry. The developed methodology enables the conversion of diverse medicinally relevant phenols, encompassing both natural and synthetic derivatives, into their respective aryl ester counterparts. This transformation is achieved through the reaction with a broad spectrum of aryl and heteroaryl iodides. The protocol is characterized by its simplicity, generality, and wide substrate scope, delivering bioactive aryl ester derivatives in good to exc

Association of environmental phenols with endometriosis and uterine leiomyoma: An analysis of NHANES, 2003-2006.

Exposure to phenols is widespread since they are found in many everyday products. Given that phenols are considered endocrine disrupting chemicals with the potential to interfere with hormonal activities, they could have adverse effects on female reproductive health. We analyzed cross-sectional data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), 2003-2006 to examine the association between phenols and endometriosis and uterine leiomyoma (fibroids). Levels of bisphenol A (BPA), benzophenone-3, and triclosan were measured using urine samples, and information on endometriosis

Straightforward Synthesis of Bifunctional Phosphorus Phenols via Phosphination of In Situ Generated o-Quinone Methides.

An efficient and practical approach towards bifunctional phosphorus phenols has been developed through a reaction of diphenylphosphine oxide and the o-quinone methides in situ generated from 2-tosylalkyl phenols under basic conditions. This protocol features simple experimental procedures under mild conditions and is easily scaled up. With this method, a variety of diarylmethyl phosphine oxides can be produced with up to 92% yield.

Emissions of fine particulate nitrated phenols from the burning of five common types of biomass.

Nitrated phenols are among the major constituents of brown carbon and affect both climates and ecosystems. However, emissions from biomass burning, which comprise one of the most important primary sources of atmospheric nitrated phenols, are not well understood. In this study, the concentrations and proportions of 10 nitrated phenols, including nitrophenols, nitrocatechols, nitrosalicylic acids, and dinitrophenol, in fine particles from biomass smoke were determined under three different burning conditions (flaming, weakly flaming, and smoldering) with five common types of biomass (leaves, bra

New ortho-quinone methide formation: application to three-component coupling of isocyanides, aldehydes and phenols.

Herein, we wish to report a new three-component formation of heterocyclic scaffolds based on a one-pot process from simple phenols. The key step of this procedure involves an ortho-quinone methide formation from Mannich adducts under alkylative conditions. The transient o-quinone methide has been trapped in situ with indole and diketone using lithium perchlorate as catalyst. The interest of this procedure has been furthermore demonstrated by a new three-component aminobenzofuran formation from phenols, aldehydes and isocyanides.
