[Recent topics in the research field of severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS)].

Seven years have passed since the discovery of a novel infectious disease, severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) caused by a novel Phlebovirus, SFTS virus (SFTSV), in PR China. It was also confirmed that SFTS was endemic to Japan through an identification of a woman, who died of SFTSV infection in Yamaguchi prefecture in late 2012. Approximately 6 years have passed since the discovery of SFTS-endemicity in Japan. At present, SFTS is endemic to PR China, South Korea and western Japan. SFTSV is maintained between several species of ticks such as Haemaphysalis longicornis and wild an

Efficacy of dinotefuran, permethrin and pyriproxyfen combination spot-on on dogs against Phlebotomus perniciosus and Ctenocephalides canis.

This study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of a new topical ectoparasiticidal spot-on containing 4.95% dinotefuran (w/w), 36.08% permethrin (w/w) and 0.44% pyriproxyfen (w/w) (Vectra 3D, Ceva, Libourne, France) against Portuguese strain of Phlebotomus perniciosus and a French strain of Ctenocephalides canis in dogs. Twelve beagle dogs were exposed for 1 h to 100 P. perniciosus on day 6 for allocation in two groups. One group was treated on day 0, and the other group was the control group. The dogs were exposed for 1 h to 100 P. perniciosus on days 1, 7, 14, 21 and 28. After each sandfly

Visceral leishmaniasis in a renal transplant recipient treated with allopurinol.

Leishmaniasis is an infection caused by a protozoan parasite belonging to the genus Leishmania and transmitted by the Phlebotomus sandfly. We report a case of visceral leishmaniasis in a 49-year-old male renal transplant recipient, a resident of the western part of Tunisia, which is an endemic zone for the disease. Just before and after the transplantation, the patient resided in Tunis, which is non-endemic for leishmaniasis. Visceral leishmaniasis occurred eight years after renal transplantation, and the clinical picture was characterized by fever and pancytopenia. Leishmaniae were detected b

Negative interactions between Toscana virus and Leishmania infantum limit coinfection in sand flies.

BACKGROUND: Phlebotomine sand flies transmit a wide range of human and veterinary pathogens, including Leishmania spp. and Toscana virus (TOSV). Both pathogens co-circulate extensively in the Mediterranean basin and may share hosts and vectors, raising the possibility of mixed infections with epidemiological relevance. While previous studies have suggested interactions between TOSV and Leishmania in mammalian hosts and in vitro systems, evidence from natural vectors is still lacking. Understanding these interactions is essential for predicting transmission outcomes in areas of pathogen overlap

Sandfly-fever outbreak in Cyprus: are phleboviruses still a health problem?

BACKGROUND: Between May and September of 2002, 256 soldiers of the Greek Army Forces in Cyprus developed a 3-day self-limited febrile illness. All clinical symptoms and laboratory findings are described. RESULTS: The responsible agent was a Cypriot strain of sandfly fever Sicilian virus (genus Phlebovirus family Bunyaviridae), identified and isolated from the blood samples of infected individuals who were characterized by an abrupt onset of high fever, arthralgias, myalgias, headache and lower back pain, followed by a post-infectious asthenia syndrome. The major laboratory findings included l

Diagnosis of viral infections by multicomponent mass spectrometric analysis.

Metabolic profiles of urine extracts of humans with viral infections, as well as of media of virus-infected human tissue cultures, have been analyzed by non-fragmenting mass spectrometry and compared with corresponding controls. The spectra were then subjected to several alternative computerized statistical procedures to detect diagnostic biochemical profiles. Controlled longitudinal studies on fully informed, consenting volunteers who received sandfly fever virus demonstrate the onset of a characteristic metabolic pattern that precedes the onset of symptoms and subsides when the patients over

Potential role of immunomodulators for treatment of phlebovirus infections of animals.

Rift Valley fever (RVFV) is a major phlebovirus-induced epizootic disease of domestic animals (primarily cattle and sheep) in Africa. No therapies for the disease are known. A related phlebovirus, Punta Toro virus (PTV), has been adapted to induce an RVFV-like disease in C57BL/6 mice. This PTV infection has been used as a model for RVFV because it is reasonably safe and does not require high-level biologic containment. The infection model has been used to study the potential role of immunomodulating substances as therapies. A spectrum of immunomodulators has been studied; those immunomodulator

Chandipura virus infection causing encephalitis in a tribal population of Odisha in eastern India.

BACKGROUND: The sudden death of 10 children in a tribal village of Kandhamal district, Odisha in eastern India led to this investigation. METHODS: We conducted a door-to-door survey to identify cases. Antibodies for Chandipura, Japanese encephalitis, dengue, chikungunya and West Nile viruses were tested by ELISA in probable cases. Chandipura virus RNA was tested from both human blood samples and sand flies by reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction. We conducted vector surveys in domestic and peridomestic areas, and collected sand flies. RESULTS: Entomological investigations revealed

Virus isolation, genetic characterization and seroprevalence of Toscana virus in Algeria.

Toscana virus (TOSV; Bunyaviridae, Phlebovirus) is transmitted by sandflies of the genus Phlebotomus in the Mediterranean area. One strain of TOSV was isolated from a total of almost 23 000 sandflies collected in Kabylia, Algeria. The complete genome was sequenced, and phylogenetic studies indicated that it was most closely related with TOSV strain from Tunisia within lineage A, which also includes Italian, French and Turkish strains. A seroprevalence study performed on 370 sera collected from people living in the same area showed that almost 50% possessed neutralizing antibodies against TOSV,

Toscana virus induces interferon although its NSs protein reveals antagonistic activity.

Toscana virus (TOSV) is a phlebotomus-transmitted virus that belongs to the family Bunyaviridae and causes widespread infections in humans; about 30 % of these cases result in aseptic meningitis. In the present study, it was shown that TOSV is an inducer of beta interferon (IFN-β), although its non-structural protein (NSs) could inhibit the induction of IFN-β if expressed in a heterologous context. A recombinant Rift Valley fever virus expressing the TOSV NSs could suppress IFN-β expression in infected cells. Moreover, in cells expressing NSs protein from a cDNA plasmid, IFN-β transcripts were

Prevalence of Toscana virus antibodies in residents of two Ionian islands, Greece.

The prevalence of Toscana virus (TOSV) IgG antibodies was determined among 128 residents of two Greek islands in the Ionian Sea, Corfu and Cephalonia. In total, 47.7% of tested persons had TOSV IgG antibodies; 51.7% among residents of Corfu and 39% among residents of Cephalonia. The prevalence was higher among persons older than 60 years, who were living in the coastal areas, while no relation with occupation was observed. The high seroprevalence, combined with the high antibody titers observed, suggest that TOSV, or an antigenically-related virus, circulates or has been circulating extensivel

Prevalence of antibodies to West Nile fever, sandfly fever Sicilian, and sandfly fever Naples viruses in healthy adults in Israel.

BACKGROUND: The arbovirus infections West Nile fever (WNF) and sandfly fever (SFF) are both endemic in the Middle East. Despite the fact that the mosquito and sandfly vectors of these viruses are still found in Israel, SFF has not been reported since 1948, whereas outbreaks of WNF occur periodically. It is suspected that some of the cases of nonspecific febrile illnesses in Israel may in fact be either WNF or SFF. AIM: To determine the extent of past arbovirus infections in subgroups of Israeli soldiers. METHODS: Sera from random samples of three groups of healthy soldiers aged 18-20 (n=273)

Characterisation of the antiviral RNA interference response to Toscana virus in sand fly cells.

Toscana virus (TOSV) (Bunyavirales, Phenuiviridae, Phlebovirus, Toscana phlebovirus) and other related human pathogenic arboviruses are transmitted by phlebotomine sand flies. TOSV has been reported in nations bordering the Mediterranean Sea among other regions. Infection can result in febrile illness as well as meningitis and encephalitis. Understanding vector-arbovirus interactions is crucial to improving our knowledge of how arboviruses spread, and in this context, immune responses that control viral replication play a significant role. Extensive research has been conducted on mosquito vect
