Direct observation of nodeless superconductivity and phonon modes in electron-doped copper oxide Sr1-xNdxCuO2.

The microscopic understanding of high-temperature superconductivity in cuprates has been hindered by the apparent complexity of crystal structures in these materials. We used scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy to study the electron-doped copper oxide compound Sr1- x Nd x CuO2, which has only bare cations separating the CuO2 planes and thus the simplest infinite-layer structure of all cuprate superconductors. Tunneling conductance spectra of the major CuO2 planes in the superconducting state revealed direct evidence for a nodeless pairing gap, regardless of variation of its magnitud

Design and Additive Manufacturing of 3D Phononic Band Gap Structures Based on Gradient Based Optimization.

We present a novel approach for gradient based maximization of phononic band gaps. The approach is a geometry projection method combining parametric shape optimization with density based topology optimization. By this approach, we obtain, in a two dimension setting, cellular structures exhibiting relative and normalized band gaps of more than 8 and 1.6, respectively. The controlling parameter is the minimal strut size, which also corresponds with the obtained stiffness of the structure. The resulting design principle is manually interpreted into a three dimensional structure from which cellula

Modulating nonequilibrium electron-phonon interactions and energy relaxation in MXenes by surface-anchored Mo3S7 nanoclusters.

Electron-phonon (e-ph) interactions govern photoinduced nonequilibrium dynamics of MXenes, determining hot-carrier relaxation and parasitic heat accumulation. However, strategies to deliberately modulate these interactions through chemical control, together with mechanistic understanding, remain underexplored. Here, we demonstrate the effective modulation of nonequilibrium e-ph interactions in Ti3C2Tx MXene via surface-anchored Mo3S7 nanoclusters, which introduce a rapid energy harvesting pathway competing with intrinsic e-ph relaxation. Using mild ligand substitution, Mo3S7 nanoclusters are d

Electron-phonon coupling and symmetry breaking in superconducting oxide interfaces near ferroelectric quantum criticality.

The origin of superconductivity in oxide interfaces and its relation to ferroelectricity remains an open question. At LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interfaces, quantum confinement and inversion symmetry breaking create a two-dimensional electron gas near a ferroelectric quantum critical point, yet direct evidence linking phonon dynamics to electron pairing has been lacking. Here we directly probe lattice vibrations and atomic structure at LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interfaces across the superconducting phase diagram using vibrational spectroscopy with momentum selectivity in a scanning transmission electron microscope. We

Strain-Induced Enhancement of Thermal Conductivity of Monolayer NiI2 via Suppressed Spin-Phonon Coupling.

Strain engineering provides a versatile route for continuously tuning thermal conductivity. In this work, using spin-polarized density functional theory in conjunction with the phonon Boltzmann transport equation, we reveal that a small biaxial tensile strain can significantly increase the thermal conductivity of the planar 2D ferromagnetic NiI2 through suppression of spin-phonon coupling, identifying a distinct magnetic mechanism for strain-controlled thermal transport. At 21 K, only 0.4% biaxial tensile strain enhances the thermal conductivity from 0.61 to 3.71 W/(mK). This improvement origi

From photocatalysis to photon-phonon co-driven catalysis for methanol reforming to hydrogen and valuable by-products.

Hydrogen energy will play a dominant role in energy transition from fossil fuel to low carbon processes, while economical, efficient, and safe hydrogen storage and transportation technology has become one of the main bottlenecks that currently hinder the application of the hydrogen energy scale. Methanol has widely been regarded as a primary liquid H2 storage medium due to its high hydrogen content, easy storage and transportation and relatively low toxicity. Hydrogen release from methanol using photocatalysis has thus been the focus of intense research and recent years have witnessed its fast

Assessment of Optical and Phonon Characteristics in MOCVD-Grown (AlxGa1-x)0.5In0.5P/n+-GaAs Epifilms.

Quaternary (AlxGa1-x)yIn1-yP alloys grown on GaAs substrates have recently gained considerable interest in photonics for improving visible light-emitting diodes, laser diodes, and photodetectors. With two degrees of freedom (x, y) and keeping growth on a lattice-matched GaAs substrate, the (AlxGa1-x)0.5In0.5P alloys are used for tuning structural, phonon, and optical characteristics in different energy regions from far-infrared (FIR) → near-infrared (NIR) → ultraviolet (UV). Despite the successful growth of (AlxGa1-x)0.5In0.5P/n+-GaAs epilayers, limited optical, phonon, and structural characte

Surface-Facet-Dependent Phonon Deformation Potential in Individual Strained Topological Insulator Bi2Se3 Nanoribbons.

Strain is an important method to tune the properties of topological insulators. For example, compressive strain can induce superconductivity in Bi2Se3 bulk material. Topological insulator nanostructures are the superior candidates to utilize the unique surface states due to the large surface to volume ratio. Therefore, it is highly desirable to monitor the local strain effects in individual topological insulator nanostructures. Here, we report the systematical micro-Raman spectra of single strained Bi2Se3 nanoribbons with different thicknesses and different surface facets, where four optical m

Emergent coherent-incoherent phonon crossover enables ultralow lattice thermal conductivity in 3D double perovskite.

The interplay between coherent (wave-like) and incoherent (particle-like) phonon transport is central to heat conduction, yet experimental evidence of their crossover in bulk three-dimensional (3D) crystals remains scarce. Here, we report intrinsically ultralow lattice thermal conductivity ([Formula: see text]) in the lead-free double perovskite Cs2AgBiCl6, reaching 0.52 and 0.28 W m-1 K-1 in single crystal and polycrystals, respectively, at room temperature. Combining thermal transport, low-temperature heat capacity, Raman spectroscopy, synchrotron x-ray pair distribution function analysis, a

Synergy Between Photon-to-Phonon Pathway and Active Lattice Oxygen Enables Efficient and Stable Syngas Synthesis.

Light-driven dry reforming of methane (DRM) offers a promising route for syngas synthesis while simultaneously mitigating greenhouse gas emissions of CO2 and CH4. However, the attractive mild-temperature operating window imposes kinetic constraints on C─H/C═O activation and promotes thermodynamic tendencies for coke formation, resulting in limited efficiency and stability. Herein, manganese oxide (MnOx) is employed as a multifunctional support to integrate the classic Rh catalytic center, establishing a new benchmark photothermo catalyst for DRM. The system achieves record-high syngas producti

Turning Rattling Motions from Phonon Scatterers to Thermal Conductivity Enhancers in Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Frameworks.

Conventional rattling motions of guest species in porous materials suppress the thermal conductivity by scattering phonons. Here, we demonstrate a paradigm shift: rattling can be engineered into a thermal conductivity enhancer. Using molecular dynamics and phonon analysis of a hydrogen-bonded organic framework (TCF-1) loaded with xenon, we show that strengthening the host-guest interaction drives a transition from long-range diffusive (off-center) to localized (on-center) rattling. Reducing the guest mass in the on-center regime further intensifies localization. Both strategies boost thermal c

Tracking Optical Phonon Dynamics in InP Nanocrystals via Transient Absorption and Femtosecond Stimulated Raman Spectroscopy.

Semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) offer actualized and prospective utility in optoelectronic technologies, yet key aspects of their thermal and vibrational behaviors remain unresolved. Compared with bulk crystals, heat dissipation involving NCs can differ substantially owing to pervasiveness of interfacial scattering, phonon confinement, and relaxed phonon momentum selection rules, as well as influences of ligands. Here, in addition to transient absorption, we use femtosecond stimulated Raman spectroscopy to track nonequilibrium optical-phonon dynamics in InP NCs capped with myristic acid ligan

Dimensionality-Dependent Exciton-Phonon Coupling in 2D and Quasi-2D Perovskites Revealed by Transient Infrared Spectroscopy.

While the exceptional emission properties of two-dimensional Ruddlesden-Popper perovskites are fundamentally governed by exciton-phonon interactions, tracking these dynamic lattice couplings remains elusive due to the state-filling limitations of visible-spectrum spectroscopy. Herein, we utilize broadband mid-infrared transient absorption spectroscopy to directly probe the intraexcitonic transitions and dynamic lattice reorganizations across a dimensionality series (n = 1, 2, and 4) of phenethylammonium (PEA)-based perovskites. We observe a profound, dimensionality-driven tuning of the microsc

Ferroelectric Phonon-Dressed Exciton Polarons Enable Internal Charge Separation in Strongly Confined 2D Perovskites.

Strongly confined two-dimensional semiconductors exhibit intense excitonic absorption, but their large exciton binding energies generally suppress the internal separation of charge carriers. Here we show that the order-parameter phonons of improper ferroelectricity provide an excited-state pathway to overcome this limitation. In the n = 1 improper-ferroelectric perovskite (Mpda)PbBr4, time- and spin-resolved optical spectroscopy, coherent phonon analysis and first-principles calculations reveal that the initially generated strongly bound intralayer exciton couples to two low-frequency order-pa

Photon-Phonon Co-Driven Ammonia Synthesis Over Ru/BaTiO3 Under Very Mild Conditions.

Ammonia, as an emerging energy carrier, holds significant strategic importance in the transition of future energy systems. Although the Haber-Bosch process remains the dominant industrial route for ammonia synthesis, its high energy demand and substantial carbon emissions underscore the urgent need for sustainable alternatives. Herein, ruthenium (Ru) with an average particle size of 0.9 nm supported on BaTiO3 is developed, which enables photon-phonon co-driven ammonia synthesis at low temperature and pressure. Photon-generated electrons effectively mitigate the H2 poisoning effect and more imp

Evidence for topological features in the electronic and phononic bands of ZGeSb (Z = Hf, Zr, Ti) class of compounds.

Nontrivial topological properties in materials have been found in either the electronic or the phononic bands, but they have seldom been shown in both for a compound. With the aid of first-principle calculations, our paper attempts to find topological features in the electron and phonon band structures of ZGeSb (Z = Hf, Zr, Ti) class of compounds. The electron band structure exhibits two nodal rings in each of these compounds. Furthermore, drumhead surface states (DSS) have also been shown. The phonon band structure depicts one nodal ring in each of these compounds. DSS is also seen in the pho

Thermal conductivity and optical phonon scattering of CMOS compatible aluminum nitride based ferroelectric thin films.

The emergence of ferroelectricity in doped aluminum nitride has positioned wurtzite nitrides as promising candidates for next-generation memory and logic devices. However, the structural modifications required to induce and stabilize ferroelectricity, including changes in bond strength, harmonicity, and crystal order, also affect phonon dynamics, creating competing pathways for polarization reversal and thermal transport. In this work, we report the contrasting roles of dopants in governing ferroelectric and thermal properties in Al1-xBxN and Al1-x-yBxScyN thin films where changes in compositi

Anharmonicity driven unusual particle-to-wave-like phonon crossover leads to ultralow thermal conductivity in Tl2AgI3.

Realization of unusual particle-to-wave-like crossover in phonon transport and understanding its fundamental structural origin can guide the design of materials with ultralow thermal conductivity. Here, we report such a crossover from particle-like phonon propagation to wave-like coherence with increasing temperature in the zero-dimensional (0D) metal halide, Tl2AgI3. Composed of discrete (Tl6I)5+ and (Ag3I8)5- subunits, the structure exhibits intrinsic lattice instability governed by Pauling's third rule where face-sharing of polyhedra drives Coulombic cationic repulsion causing local distort

Spin Hall and spin Nernst effects in Th-based compounds: anab initiostudy of electron-phonon topology.

The efficient generation and manipulation of spin currents via the spin Hall effect (SHE) has motivated extensive efforts to discover materials with enhanced SHE. Meanwhile, its thermoelectric counterpart, the spin Nernst effect (SNE), has attracted growing interest for spin-caloritronic applications. In this work, we provide key insights from a systematicab initioinvestigation of the electronic and phononic topology, alongside the SHE and SNE, in the Th-based compounds ThAsS, ThAsSe, and ThSbSe. With the exclusion of spin-orbit coupling (SOC), the electronic band structures of these compounds
