Glycogen Metabolism Supports Photosynthesis Start through the Oxidative Pentose Phosphate Pathway in Cyanobacteria.

Cyanobacteria experience drastic changes in their carbon metabolism under daily light/dark cycles. During the day, the Calvin-Benson cycle fixes CO2 and diverts excess carbon into glycogen storage. At night, glycogen is degraded to support cellular respiration. The dark/light transition represents a universal environmental stress for cyanobacteria and other photosynthetic lifeforms. Recent studies revealed the essential genetic background necessary for the fitness of cyanobacteria during diurnal growth. However, the metabolic processes underlying the dark/light transition are not well understo

Cyanobacterial photosynthesis under sulfidic conditions: insights from the isolate Leptolyngbya sp. strain hensonii.

We report the isolation of a pinnacle-forming cyanobacterium isolated from a microbial mat covering the sediment surface at Little Salt Spring-a flooded sinkhole in Florida with a perennially microoxic and sulfidic water column. The draft genome of the isolate encodes all of the enzymatic machinery necessary for both oxygenic and anoxygenic photosynthesis, as well as genes for methylating hopanoids at the C-2 position. The physiological response of the isolate to H2S is complex: (i) no induction time is necessary for anoxygenic photosynthesis; (ii) rates of anoxygenic photosynthesis are regula

Effects of Red and Blue Light on Steady-State and Dynamic Photosynthesis of Cucumber Seedlings.

Our previous study revealed a significant effect of red and blue light on steady-state and dynamic photosynthesis in cucumber seedlings. To further investigate the mechanism by which red and blue light affect photosynthesis, cucumber (Cucumis sativus L. cv. Jinyou 365) seedlings were exposed to white light (W), monochromatic red light (R), monochromatic blue light (B), and mixed red-blue light with red:blue photon flux ratios of 9:1 (9R1B), 7:3 (7R3B), 5:5 (5R5B), 3:7 (3R7B), and 1:9 (1R9B). We measured photosynthetic pigment contents, induction curves of photosynthetic gas exchange and chloro

CO2 Fertilisation of Growth in Wild C4 Grasses may be Amplified by Upregulated Photosynthesis.

Rising atmospheric CO2 is expected to have limited direct effects on C4 photosynthesis because the carbon-concentrating mechanism maintains near-saturating CO2 at Rubisco. Consequently, growth responses of C4 plants to elevated CO2 (eCO2) are generally attributed to indirect improvements in plant water relations. However, it remains unclear whether sustained exposure to eCO2 also induces changes in photosynthetic capacity that contribute directly to carbon gain. We examined the interactive effects of CO2 concentration and soil water availability on photosynthesis, biochemical capacity, and gro

Functionalized benzoxazine-based phenolic resins for in situ photosynthesis and utilization of hydrogen peroxide.

The development of facile and scalable methods to fabricate green photocatalysts with efficient charge separation remain pivotal for advancing photocatalytic H2O2 production toward practical applications. Herein, a sulfonic acid-functionalized benzoxazine-based phenolic resin (SAPFac) was reported for in situ H2O2 production and utilization. The electron-withdrawing sulfonic groups (-SO3H) induce a robust intramolecular built-in electric field and impart surface negative charges, thereby synergistically enhancing photogenerated carrier separation efficiency and optimizing proton/oxygen affinit

GSNOR mediates NO signaling to enhance salt tolerance in tobacco by regulating redox and photosynthesis.

High salt stress can hinder plant growth and development, thus reducing crop yield and quality. As an important signaling molecule, NO is involved in regulating various physiological and biochemical processes in plants. In this study, tobacco seedlings treated with 200 mmol/L NaCl exhibited leaf etiolation, sharp increases in superoxide anion (O2−) and peroxynitrite anion (ONOO−) contents, reduced activities of photosystem I (PSI) and II (PSII) reaction centers, and obstructed electron transfer. However, overexpression of the gene encoding the NO regulator nitrosoglutathione reductase (GSNOR)

Disruption of starch biosynthesis and triacylglycerol degradation impairs growth but improves photosynthesis in Arabidopsis.

Enhancing lipid accumulation by redirecting carbon from starch to triacylglycerol (TAG) in vegetative tissues is a promising strategy for developing high-energy-density crops for bioenergy production. However, our understanding of how starch and TAG metabolism interact and how this interaction affects growth and photosynthesis is incomplete. Here, we investigated the metabolic and physiological consequences of disrupting starch biosynthesis and TAG turnover in Arabidopsis thaliana by generating single, double, and triple mutants involving ADG1 (starch biosynthesis), TGD1 (lipid trafficking), a

Regulation of energy production and photoprotection in photosynthesis: Theories, mechanisms, and Implications for crop improvement.

The light-dependent reactions of photosynthesis are fundamental to driving electron and proton fluxes, which are essential for the production of ATP and reductants, while simultaneously providing critical photoprotection. As both energy generation and photoprotection have become key targets in efforts to improve crop yield potential, making the regulation of light reactions-particularly energy balance-a topic of great importance. This review synthesizes current and past understanding of these processes. We begin by highlighting the discrepancy between the output of linear electron flow (LEF) a

Discussion of the possibility of increasing the efficiency of photosynthesis using genetic and metabolic engineering methods.

Photosynthesis is the main process by which biomass of living matter is created from inorganic carbon. However, the efficiency of photosynthesis is low. The main reason for the low efficiency of photosynthesis is the properties of the enzyme that fixes carbon dioxide - ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxidase (RuBisCO). There are reasons to believe that it is impossible to improve the properties of RuBisCO. It is apparently possible to significantly increase the efficiency of photosynthesis only by replacing RuBisCO with another enzyme. Among the known enzymes capable of fixing CO2, there

Construction of An Artificial Photosynthesis System with A Single CdS QDs-Ferritin Hybrid Molecule.

Establishing artificial photosynthesis systems in a simple but effective manner to mitigate the greenhouse effect and address the energy crisis remains challenging. The combination of photocatalysis technology with bioengineering is an emerging field with great potential to construct such artificial photosynthesis systems, but so far, it has barely been explored in this area. Herein, an artificial photocatalysis platform is constructed with high CO2 conversion and H2O splitting capability by integration of CdS QDs into the intra-subunit interface of H-type ferritin (Marsupenaeus japonicus), a

Combined effect of water inundation and heavy metals on the photosynthesis and physiology of Spartina alterniflora.

The frequency and duration of tidal flooding significantly influence the bioavailability of heavy metals (HMs) in sediment and hence exert toxicological effects on coastal wetland plants. In this study, the combined effects of different water inundation times (3, 6, 9, and 12 h) and HMs (Cu, Zn, Pb, and Cr) on the photosynthesis and physiology of Spartina alterniflora were investigated under greenhouse conditions. Results showed that S. alterniflora was somehow tolerant to the combined HMs treatments, and only the highest level of HM treatment decreased leaf chlorophyll content. Furthermore, t

Copper economy in Chlamydomonas: prioritized allocation and reallocation of copper to respiration vs. photosynthesis.

Inorganic elements, although required only in trace amounts, permit life and primary productivity because of their functions in catalysis. Every organism has a minimal requirement of each metal based on the intracellular abundance of proteins that use inorganic cofactors, but elemental sparing mechanisms can reduce this quota. A well-studied copper-sparing mechanism that operates in microalgae faced with copper deficiency is the replacement of the abundant copper protein plastocyanin with a heme-containing substitute, cytochrome (Cyt) c6. This switch, which is dependent on a copper-sensing tra

Photoperiod and light quality shape flowering and photosynthesis in common buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum Moench).

Common buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum Moench) is cultivated across diverse environments in which photoperiod and light quality influence plant development and productivity. This study evaluated the effects of short-day (10 h light/14 h dark) and long-day (16 h light/8 h dark) conditions applied during the first 25 days of growth on flowering, photosynthetic performance, and yield formation in the cultivar 'Panda'. Plants were grown in phytotron chambers under blue- and red-enriched LED illumination and contrasting photoperiods, while plants grown under greenhouse daylight served as a control.

Chloroplast differentiation in epidermal cells: an environmental response supporting submerged photosynthesis in Rorippa aquatica.

While the epidermal cells of terrestrial plants typically lack chloroplasts, this is not the case for aquatic plants, a trait that likely evolved to enhance photosynthetic efficiency underwater. Amphibious plants display various response strategies to survive under both terrestrial and aquatic environments. In this study, we described an environmental response in the amphibious plant Rorippa aquatica that involves chloroplasts differentiating into epidermal cells upon submergence. This phenomenon has not been previously documented and was named environmentally responsive epidermal chloroplast

Diel net CO2 exchange of carnivorous Pinguicula is consistent with low-level CAM photosynthesis.

Crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) photosynthesis is a water-conserving pathway of photosynthesis that typically occurs in leaf- or stem-succulent plants of warm, water-limited habitats. Key features of CAM photosynthesis are nocturnal CO2 uptake and nocturnal increases in tissue acidity. CAM photosynthesis was recently reported in water-deficit stressed carnivorous plants of the genus Pinguicula (Lentibulariaceae). The report is remarkable because CAM has neither been documented in the Lentibulariaceae nor in a carnivorous species before. Furthermore, Pinguicula plants are vastly different in

Photosynthesis in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 is not optimally regulated under very high CO2.

One strategy for CO2 mitigation is using photosynthetic microorganisms to sequester CO2 under high concentrations, such as in flue gases. While elevated CO2 levels generally promote growth, excessively high levels inhibit growth through uncertain mechanisms. This study investigated the physiology of the cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 under very high CO2 concentrations and yet stable pH around 7.5. The growth rate of the wild type (WT) at 200 µmol photons m-2 s-1 and a gas phase containing 30% CO2 was 2.7-fold lower compared to 4% CO2. Using a CRISPR interference mutant library, we i

Changes in SWEET-mediated sugar partitioning affect photosynthesis performance and plant response to drought.

Sugars, produced through photosynthesis, are at the core of all organic compounds synthesized and used for plant growth and their response to environmental changes. Their production, transport, and utilization are highly regulated and integrated throughout the plant life cycle. The maintenance of sugar partitioning between the different subcellular compartments and between cells is important in adjusting the photosynthesis performance and response to abiotic constraints. We investigated the consequences of the disruption of four genes coding for SWEET sugar transporters in Arabidopsis (SWEET11

Interface-Engineering-Induced C-C Coupling for C2H4 Photosynthesis from Atmospheric-Concentration CO2 Reduction.

Producing ethylene (C2H4) from carbon dioxide (CO2) photoreduction under mild conditions is primarily restricted by the difficulty of C-C coupling. Herein, we designed highly active metal atom clusters anchored on semiconductor nanosheets, which established heteroatom sites on the interface to steer C-C coupling, realizing air-concentration CO2 photoreduction into C2H4 in pure water. As an example, the Pd nanoclusters loaded on ZnO nanosheets are prepared, demonstrated by the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and high-angle annular dark-field image. Sunlight-directed fluorophore-switch in photosynthesis of cyanine subcellular organelle markers for bio-imaging.

The photoconvertible fluorophore synthesis enables the light controlled imaging channels switch for accurate tracking the quantity and localization of intracellular biomolecules in chemical biology. Herein, we repurposed the photochemistry of Fischer's base and developed a sunlight-directed fluorophore-switch strategy for high-efficiency trimethine cyanine (Cy3.5/Cy3) synthesis. The unexpected sunlight-directed photoconversion of Fischer's base proceeds in conventional solvents and accelerates in chloroform via photo-oxidation and hydrogen atom transfer without using extra additives, and the h
