Pelvic fractures in infants as a sign of physical abuse.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this article is to describe pelvic fractures in two abused male infants, and to determine if the literature describes pelvic fractures in infants as suspicious for child physical abuse. RESULTS: Two infants are described with unexplained pelvic fractures. While in one case child abuse was obvious, careful attention to the radiological evaluation and case history led to the correct diagnosis of child abuse in the second case. A search for information regarding pelvic fractures in children resulted in information limited to the radiological and surgical literature. CO

Physical abuse of children: a review for orthopedic surgeons.

Statistics show that more than half the victims of child abuse have fractures. The orthopedic surgeon will often be the first person to identify a potentially abused child. In a series at Brenner Children's Hospital, 17% of abused children had a fracture as the initial manifestation of child abuse. For protection of the child, it is essential that the orthopedic surgeon recognize the signs of child abuse and make a referral to the appropriate child protection agency. In this review article, we discuss recognition of common types of child abuse and outline appropriate management of child abuse

Borderline personality in perpetrators of psychological and physical abuse.

The present study is an extension of research that examined the relationship between borderline personality organization (BPO), anger (assessed with the Multidimensional Anger Inventory [MAI]), and wife abuse in 120 men who had committed wife assault. Seventy-five female partners reported on physical and psychological abuse by the men, using the Conflict Tactics Scale and the Psychological Maltreatment of Women Inventory. The men's BPO self-report scores correlated significantly with their partners' reports of their abusiveness as assessed by these scales. Three self-report subscale scores on

[Diagnostic imaging in cases of physical abuse of children].

Following a few comments regarding the historical development, preliminary definitions and early studies on battered child syndrome, the Authors give an overall clinical semeiological picture, focusing on the anatomo-radiological characteristics of the most common bone and non-bone lesions. In addition traditional (X-ray) and more advanced methods of image diagnosis (ultrasonography, CT, RM) are examined and their utility in the study of the battered child is evaluated.

Physical abuse and neglect of the elderly: assessment and intervention.

With the aging of the population in the United States, elder abuse is now recognized as a significant problem. However, health care providers lack knowledge regarding detection, reporting, and appropriate interventions in cases of suspected or substantiated abuse. Whereas six types of elder abuse are identified in the literature, physical abuse and neglect are thought to be the most prevalent. Nurses in acute care and outpatient settings are in an ideal position to detect physical abuse and neglect. To act as patient advocates, they must have increased awareness of the problem, as well as pert

Childhood physical abuse, early social support, and risk for maltreatment: current social support as a mediator of risk for child physical abuse.

OBJECTIVE: The study investigated whether perceptions of social support in adulthood partially mediated the associations between childhood experiences (i.e., receipt of physical abuse and levels of early social support) and adult risk for child physical abuse. METHOD: Participants included 598 general population adults who completed self-report measures designed to assess childhood physical abuse, perceptions of early and current social support, and risk factors for child physical abuse. Structural equation modeling was used to test and cross validate a model that included the direct effects

Physical and emotional abuse with internet addiction and anxiety as a mediator and physical activity as a moderator.

This study aimed to explore the relationship between physical and emotional abuse (physical-emotional abuse) and Internet addiction in university students, as well as the mediating role of anxiety and the moderating role of physical activity. The data of physical-emotional abuse, anxiety and Internet addiction, and physical activity were measured by subjective questionnaire with convenience sampling in March 2024. A total of 1591 participants (806 males and 692 females) from Shanxi, Henan, Hunan and Hubei provinces in China were investigated. Subsequently, the relationships among the variables

Exploratory assessment of parental physical disease categories as predictors of documented physical child abuse.

UNLABELLED: Improved prediction of physical child abuse could aid in developing preventive measures. Parental physical disease has been tested previously as a predictor of documented physical child abuse but in broad categories and with differing results. No prior studies have tested clinically recognizable categories of parental disease in a high-powered dataset. Using Danish registries, data on children and their parents from the years 1997-2018 were used to explore several parental physical disease categories' associations with documented physical child abuse. For each disease category, sur

Childhood physical abuse and midlife physical health: testing a multi-pathway life course model.

Although prior research has established that childhood abuse adversely affects midlife physical health, it is unclear how abuse continues to harm health decades after the abuse has ended. In this project, I assess four life course pathways (health behaviors, cognition, mental health, and social relation) that plausibly link childhood physical abuse to three midlife physical health outcomes (bronchitis diagnosis, ulcer diagnosis, and general physical health). These three outcomes are etiologically distinct, leading to unique testable hypotheses. Multivariate models controlling for childhood bac

Do trauma symptoms mediate the relationship between childhood physical abuse and adult child abuse risk?

OBJECTIVE: Although the intergenerational transmission of family violence has been well documented, the mechanisms responsible for this effect have not been fully determined. The present study examined whether trauma symptoms mediate the relationship between a childhood history of child physical abuse (CPA) and adult CPA risk, and whether any such mediation was similar for women and men. METHOD: Female and male US Navy (USN) recruits (N=5,394) and college students (N=716) completed self-report measures of their history of child abuse (i.e., CPA and child sexual abuse [CSA]), exposure to intim

Sexual and physical abuse history in gastroenterology practice: how types of abuse impact health status.

OBJECTIVE: There is an increasing amount of literature pointing to a relationship between sexual and/or physical abuse history and poor health status, although few studies provide evidence concerning which aspects of abuse may impact on health. In female patients with gastrointestinal (GI) disorders, the present study examined the effects on health status of: 1) history of sexual abuse and physical abuse, 2) invasiveness or seriousness of sexual abuse and physical abuse, and 3) age at first sexual and physical abuse. METHOD: The sample included 239 female patients from a referral gastroentero

Physical abuse in adolescents during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Covid-19 has now spread to almost all parts of the world which has caused changes in the social order of life for humans. The spread of Covid-19 in Indonesia is relatively high, so the Indonesian government has adopted a policy using social distancing (large-scale social restrictions). Various pressures experienced by residents tend to result in excessive stress and emotions. This can have an impact on the occurrence of violence in families and generally the victims are adolescents. Physical abuse is an act that can cause physical pain such as slapping, strangling, hitting, kicking, stabbing,
