Respiratory mechanics in Standardbred horses with sub-clinical inflammatory airway disease and poor athletic performance.

The aim of this study was to investigate and quantify respiratory mechanical dysfunctions in Standardbred horses with both poor performance and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid cytology characteristic of inflammatory airway disease (IAD). A control group of healthy Standardbred horses was compared. Respiratory mechanics and breathing pattern were examined at rest and during hyperventilation induced using a rebreathing method. At rest, respiratory mechanics and breathing pattern were superimposable in both groups. In IAD horses, rebreathing increased ventilation, with larger tidal volumes and lower

Peripheral and central chemoreceptor control of ventilation during exercise in humans.

The stability of arterial blood gas tensions and pH during steady-state moderate exercise has suggested an important humoral element of ventilatory control in humans. However, the involvement of central and peripheral chemoreflexes in this humoral control remains controversial. This reflects, in large part, technical and interpretational limitations inherent in currently used estimators of chemoreflex "sensitivity." Evidence suggests that the central chemoreceptors (a) contribute little during moderate exercise, given the relative stability of cerebrospinal pH, (b) constrain the hyperpnea of h

Do carotid chemoreceptors inhibit the hyperventilatory response to heavy exercise?

In this paper two types of evidence are presented which question the commonly presumed role of carotid chemoreceptor stimulation as the primary mediator of the hyperventilatory response to heavy exercise. First, carotid-body denervation in ponies increases their hyperventilatory response to heavy exercise. Second, the awake dog and the goat at rest show an immediate and substantial depression of tidal volume and of ventilation when their isolated carotid chemoreceptors are made hypocapnic. Accordingly, it is proposed that during heavy exercise the carotid chemoreceptors are inhibitory to respi

Acute and Lifelong Endurance Exercise Yields Differential Effects During Circadian Disruption in Mice.

INTRODUCTION: Circadian rhythms are responsible for physiological and behavioral processes coordinated in a 24-h cycle. We investigated whether untimed, long-term voluntary wheel access mitigated circadian disruption and facilitated re-entrainment. METHODS: Thirty-five C57Bl/6J mice ( n = 21 males, n = 14 females) were used in this experiment. Long-term exercised (LTEx) mice ran from 3 wk to 12 months of age. At 12 months, animals were circadian disrupted for 14 d and then re-entrained for 7 d. Long-term sedentary (LTSed) animals were disrupted but had no access to a wheel. Another long-term

Biomechanical assessment of dressage Spanish horses through accelerometry and the immediate effects of a single capacitive resistive electrical transfer session.

BACKGROUND: Capacitive resistive electrical transfer (CRET) is a non-invasive electromagnetic diathermic technique. The effect of its application 24 h prior to exercise, compared to a sham application performed with the device off, was evaluated in 8 Spanish Purebred dressage stallions. CRET was applied bilaterally on the neck, back, and croup. The horses wore an accelerometer fixed on the sternal area during a dressage test, and spatiotemporal stride parameters, total and dorsoventral (DVAA), longitudinal (LAA), and mediolateral accelerometric activities, as well as dorsoventral displacement,

The effect of dynamic mobilization exercises and therapeutic trunk exercises on superficial epaxial and hypaxial muscle activity in horses.

BACKGROUND: Equine back rehabilitation commonly integrates dynamic mobilization exercises (DME), including DME to the chest (DMEChest) and DME to the hip (DMEHip), and therapeutic trunk (TTE) exercises, including pelvic rounding (Rounding), and lateral tail pulls (LatTail). However, limited evidence supports their use for selectively activating trunk muscles. AIMS/OBJECTIVES: To quantify and compare superficial epaxial and hypaxial muscle activity during selected DMEs and TTEs using surface electromyography (sEMG). Increased muscle activity was hypothesized across exercises, specifically in e

Consequences of the modulation of gestational resistance training intensity for placental cell composition and nutrient transporter expression.

INTRODUCTION: Resistance training during pregnancy provides benefits for the mother and fetus, but little is known about the effects of resistance training on placental structure and function or the repercussions of modifying resistance training intensity on the mother-fetus-placenta triad. METHODS: Female Wistar rats were submitted to resistance training involving a ladder climb (80 % of maximum load carried (MLC), 5-day/week for 3-weeks) before pregnancy. After confirmation of mating, the rats were randomly divided into three groups, according to resistance training intensity during pregnan

The Impact of Exercise Capacity on Complex Neuromuscular Adaptations: A Narrative Review Based on a Rat Model System Selectively Bred for Low and High Response to Training.

There is scientific evidence that supports the association between aerobic exercise capacity and the risk of developing complex metabolic diseases. The factors that determine aerobic capacity can be categorized into two groups: intrinsic and extrinsic components. While exercise capacity is influenced by both the intrinsic fitness levels of an organism and the extrinsic factors that emerge during training, physiological adaptations to exercise training can differ significantly among individuals. The interplay between intrinsic and acquired exercise capacities represents an obstacle to recognizi

How prior racing performance influences competition level in off-the-track Thoroughbred horses' post-racing eventing careers.

BACKGROUND: The ongoing discussion surrounding the well-being of retired racehorses underscores the importance of implementing effective rehoming strategies that prioritise animal welfare. A significant knowledge gap persists regarding whether a horse's success in racing can be used to reliably predict its performance in different equestrian sports upon retirement from racing. AIMS/OBJECTIVES: To examine the association between racehorse performance metrics and eventing metrics in off-the-track Thoroughbreds that compete in eventing within Australia. METHODS: Racing metrics and eventing metr

Polysaccharides from Millettia speciosa Champ. Ameliorates Excessive Exercise-Induced Fatigue by Regulating Gut Microbiota.

This study aimed to explore the ameliorative effect of Millettia speciosa Champ. polysaccharides (MSP) on excessive exercise-induced fatigue (EF) mice. The physicochemical characterization and in vitro antioxidant activities were analyzed. The fatigue-related biochemical indexes were determined, and gut microbiota was analyzed by 16S rDNA sequencing. The results showed that MSP primarily consists of total carbohydrates, uronic acids, and proteins. It was mainly composed of glucose, arabinose, and galactose. Additionally, MSP showed good scavenging effects on free radicals. In the experiment of

Relationship between back pain and poor performance in show jumping athletic horses.

BACKGROUND: Showjumping athletic horses are frequently affected by back pain, which in turn influences their performance and equestrian activities. AIM: The aim of the present study was to determine the etiological factors predisposing to back problems in show jumping horses and how to diagnose, and manage them. METHODS: A total of 75 cases (45 geldings and 30 mares, aged between 8 and 23 years and weighing 420-550 Kg) with histories suggestive of back problems and low competitive ability as show jumping were used in this study. The evaluation of data was based on the inputs of case history,

Moderately intense physical exercise alleviates electrocardiographic changes induced by cisplatin in rats.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Cisplatin induces many collateral effects such as gastrointestinal disorders, nephrotoxicity, and dysautonomia. Recently our group showed that cisplatin treatment induces gastric emptying delay and that physical exercise and treatment with pyridostigmine prevent this change. In the current study, we investigated the role of moderate exercise on cardiac activity and autonomic balance in rats treated with cisplatin. METHODS: Male Wistar rats were divided into saline, cisplatin, exercise, and exercise+cisplatin groups. Cardiac and autonomic disorders were induced by (

Comparative effects of various running exercise modalities on femoral bone quality in rats.

BACKGROUND: It is now well established that physical exercise is an effective preventive method to reduce and treat certain chronic diseases, particularly musculoskeletal disorders. At the bone level, running exercise is well known for its positive effects on various parameters of bone quality. There is, however, no consensus regarding the effects of different running exercise modalities on bone quality. AIM: The objective of this study was to compare the effects of three treadmill running modalities: intermittent, moderate continuous, and a combination of both-on bone quality parameters in r

Upper airway endoscopy in exercising horses: Findings in 164 barrel racing horses with respiratory clinical signs and/or poor performance.

Barrel racing involves sprinting through a cloverleaf pattern in under 20 s. The prevalence of upper airway obstructions (UAO) in barrel racers is unknown, thus a retrospective analysis of 164 client-owned horses referred for overground endoscopy (OGE) between 2014 and 2022 was performed. Referring complaints included respiratory noise, cough, epistaxis, behaviour (owner reported stress/anxiety, refusal to enter arena, excessive head shaking), and/or poor performance. Horses performed a standardized exercise test with low and high-speed components. Videoendoscopic recordings were systematicall

Atlas of exercise metabolism reveals time-dependent signatures of metabolic homeostasis.

Tissue sensitivity and response to exercise vary according to the time of day and alignment of circadian clocks, but the optimal exercise time to elicit a desired metabolic outcome is not fully defined. To understand how tissues independently and collectively respond to timed exercise, we applied a systems biology approach. We mapped and compared global metabolite responses of seven different mouse tissues and serum after an acute exercise bout performed at different times of the day. Comparative analyses of intra- and inter-tissue metabolite dynamics, including temporal profiling and blood sa

Diagnostic Value of Tracheal Wash Cytology for Monitoring Exercise-Induced Pulmonary Hemorrhage in Thoroughbred Racehorses.

Lower airway cytology has been proposed as a complementary diagnostic method to confirm the presence and quantifying the severity of exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage (EIPH). Bronchoalveolar lavage is usually preferred over tracheal wash (TW), yet the need for sedation imposes as a limitation for active sport horses in addition to be a highly invasive technique. This study aims to evaluate the diagnostic value of TW with Total Hemosiderin Score (THS) for monitoring EIPH in active Thoroughbred racehorses. A sampling of 47 randomly selected Thoroughbreds were endoscopically examined for EIPH

Morphological analysis of third metacarpus cartilage and subchondral bone in Thoroughbred racehorses: An ex vivo study.

Racehorses are exposed to repetitive overload during training and competition, causing joint hyperextension, tissue fatigue, and ultimately skeletal failure. Some degree of bone changes, such as sclerosis, are expected in equine athletes, as adaptation to the biomechanical rigors of training and racing. Understanding the imaging characteristics of the equine joint surface and subchondral bone would allow earlier detection of injuries or adaptation, improving prognosis and training programs. This study sought to describe the joint surface structural patterns and the periarticular structures of

Asthmatic Disease as an Underlying Cause of Dorsal Displacement of the Soft Palate in Horses.

It is important to treat the upper and lower respiratory tracts as a single unit, as lower respiratory tract diseases can often cause upper respiratory functional disorders, whereas upper respiratory obstructions could be a factor in lower respiratory problems. The present study aimed to investigate the hypothesis that asthmatic diseases may be an underlying cause of dorsal displacement of the soft palate in horses. Pleasure or sport horses (n = 57) with a history of asthmatic disease were incorporated in the study. All horses were examined in the exacerbation phase of the asthmatic disease. B

Molecular Plasticity in Animal Pigmentation: Emerging Processes Underlying Color Changes.

Animal coloration has been rigorously studied and has provided morphological implications for fitness with influences over social behavior, predator-prey interactions, and sexual selection. In vertebrates, its study has developed our understanding across diverse fields ranging from behavior to molecular biology. In the search for underlying molecular mechanisms, many have taken advantage of pedigree-based and genome-wide association screens to reveal the genetic architecture responsible for pattern variation that occurs in early development. However, genetic differences do not provide a full p

Exercise-induced lordosis in zebrafish Danio rerio (Hamilton, 1822).

The anabolic effect of exercise on muscles and bones is well documented. In teleost fish, exercise has been shown to accelerate skeletogenesis, to increase bone volume, and to change the shape of vertebral bodies. Still, increased swimming has also been reported to induce malformations of the teleost vertebral column, particularly lordosis. This study examines whether zebrafish (Danio rerio) develops lordosis as a result of continuous physical exercise. Zebrafish were subjected, for 1 week, to an increased swimming exercise of 5.0, 6.5 or 8.0 total body lengths (TL) per second. Control and exe
