Burden of genital warts in Peru: an observational study.

Genital warts (GW) are mucosal or skin lesions caused by sexual transmission of human papillomavirus (HPV). This study estimates the frequency of GW cases in physicians' clinics and physicians' usual practices of GW referral and diagnosis in Peru. Participants in this study were a convenience sample of 100 physicians in five specialties: primary care (17), gynecology (37), urology (10), dermatology (31), and infectious diseases (5). Physicians completed a survey and daily log of all patients aged 18-60 years seen over ten days in their offices located in Peru. The survey recorded GW referral p

[When are recommended breast biopsies carried out, and what information does the physician responsible for mammography receive? Experiences with 317 breast biopsy in a regional quality assurance project for screening mammography].

In a regional quality assurance project for screening mammography (German Mammography Study), 27,335 women were screened in 40 participating, office-based mammography units from 1990-1992. Screening led to 317 biopsies with a positive predictive value of 0.33. All biopsy documentation available to the mammography physicians was analysed with a view towards biopsy interval and completeness of information fed back to the Mx physicians. Biopsy recommendations were acted upon in 29% of cases within 2 weeks. With the exception of the dignity Mx physicians were incompletely informed about biopsy res

Quality assurance for health supervision of the ambulatory child.

The Joint Committee on Quality Assurance (JCQA) was established in 1970 by the American Academy of Pediatrics and includes members from eight organizations concerned with primary care for children. The Committee developed criteria for assessing (1) health supervision of children, and (2) the management of three common diseases of children: tonsillopharyngitis, urinary tract infection, and bronchial asthma. These criteria were then validated by 452 academic and practitioner experts. A representative sample of primary care physicians further evaluated these criteria. The last phase of the study

Treatment of Diseases in the Civil Society of the Han Empire.

The separation of medicine and shamanism, which began during the Spring and Autumn Period, led to the emergence of "excellent physicians" who were distinct from shamans, a trend that continued from the Warring States Period through the early Han Dynasty. However, while there were some instances of these highly skilled physicians treating commoners, their medical practice was primarily concentrated among the ruling elite-including rulers, high-ranking officials, and those associated with them. Furthermore, physicians with outstanding treatment records in the general populace were sought after b

Dr. Who? Providing stability to recruiting and retaining health care professionals in West Virginia.

Primary care physicians comprise less than 15% of the United States outpatient work force, yet they perform 23% of the visits that Americans make to their physicians each year. In rural areas, an even greater proportion or about 42% of these visits are to family physician's offices. The country's rural areas have been medically underserved for decades. United States census data has determined that about 21% of the United States population lives in rural areas. Sparse population, extreme poverty, high proportions of racial and ethnic minorities and lack of cultural amenities characterize rural

A Comparison of Maternal Interconception Care Practices in Pediatric and Family Medicine Offices.

Maternal interconception care is essential to improve birth outcomes by targeting maternal risk factors. The Healthy Mom, Healthy Family (HMHF) program expanded the Interventions to Minimize Preterm and Low Birth Weight Infants through Continuous Improvement Techniques (IMPLICIT) Network's scope by incorporating interconception care into pediatric and family medicine well-child visits (WCVs). We compared screening and referral/counseling rates for maternal behaviors between pediatricians and family physicians. Physicians used a standardized data tool to collect information on maternal behavior

Morpho-phonemic analysis boosts word reading for adult struggling readers.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study is to evaluate patient's perceptions of physician reimbursement for the most commonly performed surgery on the hand, a carpal tunnel release (CTR). METHODS: Anonymous physician reimbursement surveys were given to patients and non-patients in the waiting rooms of orthopaedic hand physicians' offices and certified hand therapist's offices. The survey consisted of 13 questions. Respondents were asked (1) what they thought a surgeon should be paid to perform a carpal tunnel release, (2) to estimate how much Medicare reimburses the surgeon, and (3) about how h

Access to orthopaedic care for children with medicaid versus private insurance: results of a national survey.

BACKGROUND: It has been documented that children insured by Medicaid in California have significantly less access to orthopedic care than children with private insurance. Low Medicaid physician reimbursement rates have been hypothesized to be a major factor. The first objective of this study was to examine whether children insured by Medicaid have limited access to orthopedic care in a national sample. The second objective was to determine if state variations in Medicaid physician reimbursement rates correlate with access to orthopedic care. METHODS: Two-hundred fifty orthopedic surgeon's off

Testing patients' lungs: spirometry as part of the physical examination.

Spirometric measurements of lung function are vital signs that unfortunately are not as widely used as blood pressure or cholesterol testing. Spirometry is an uncomplicated procedure that can easily be incorporated by primary care physicians into routine physical examinations, especially now that simple handheld spirometers suitable for all offices are available. Abnormal spirometric patterns can alert physicians to patients' additional risk of developing chronic lung disease and to the need for interventions that prevent or forestall morbidity and mortality. Spirometry also is an important to

Ongoing physician guidance to achieve periodic mammography of women at an urban health center.

The use of a low-cost behavior prompt at an urban, hospital-based health center that encourages physicians to record and act upon cancer screening information is described. Brief audit forms were incorporated into medical records of all women 40+ years of age seen between June 1994 and March 1996 (approximately 4,700 office visits). Audit forms alerted physicians about women's breast and cervical cancer screening histories and encouraged them to note any screening done or recommended during an office visit. Patient attributes did not readily distinguish who was and was not screened with mammog

Visits to physicians by Asian/Pacific Americans.

The purpose of this paper is to disseminate some of the findings from the 1979 National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NAMCS) where, for the first time in its history, data are available on the characteristics of visits to office-based physicians by Asian/Pacific Americans. The NAMCS Program is the only source for such data which is based on a national probability sample survey of physician-patient encounters. Among the findings are: 1) no significant difference was observed between Asian/Pacific Islanders and the white majority with regard to the patient's sex, return-visit ratio, or the kin
