A review of the medical standards for civilian airmen. Synopsis of a two-year study.

This article summarizes the report of a comprehensive review by the American Medical Association (AMA) of the medical standards for civilian airmen. The present standards were promulgated by the Federal Aviation Administration in 1959; the alcoholism and cardiovascular standards were revised in 1982. The AMA report recommends new or revised standards for cardiovascular, mental and behavioral, visual, endocrine, respiratory, hematological, hearing and equilibrium, musculoskeletal, and nervous system disorders. It also provides guidance for the medical certification of airmen with conditions not

HORSE SPECIES SYMPOSIUM: Nutritional programming and the impact on mare and foal performance.

Many environmental factors can alter the phenotype of offspring when applied during critical periods of early development. In most domestic species, maternal nutrition influences fetal development and the fetus is sensitive to the nutrition of the dam during pregnancy. Many experimental models have been explored including both under- and overnutrition of the dam. Both nutritional strategies have yielded potential consequences including altered glucose tolerance, pancreatic endocrine function, insulin sensitivity, body composition, and colostrum quality. Although the impact of maternal nutritio

Systemic effects resulting from carotid body stimulation-invited article.

The carotid body is stimulated by a number of blood-borne stimuli, ranging from increasing intensities of hypoxia, hypercapnia or acidosis to less studied stimuli, including hyperthermia, hyperosmolarity and hyperkalaemia. Although there exists heterogeneity in type I cell structure and function, there is no evidence to demonstrate that individual afferent fibres of the carotid sinus nerve subserve separate stimulus modalities. Thus, afferent information appears graded only for intensity (although this may be time-dependent) and not stimulus type. The response to carotid body stimulation, ther

[The characteristics of the morphofunctional status of 15- to 17-year-old youths based on a comprehensive assessment of the rates of their biological development].

There were studied individual typological peculiarities of the genesis of the genesis of 15-17 years old boys, the state of their respiration and their heart activities. According to these experiments there was stated the possibility of the complex appreciation of the biological tempos of genesis of the senior grades' pupils on the bases of physical and somatic genesis and sexual maturity. As a result of such differentiation of 15-17 year old boys there will appear 3 typological groups--fast, normal and slow types of genesis which quite differ by the majority of grades. Besides these 3 groups

Kinetics of Chemical Processes in the Human Brain. Proton Blockade of Acetylcholinesterase and pH-Impulse in the Mechanism of Functioning of the Cholinergic Synapse.

A kinetic model describing the dynamics of synaptic "discharge" taking into account the kinetics of the injection of the neurotransmitter into the synaptic cleft, the pH-dependence of the catalytic activity of the enzyme, and diffusion withdrawal of protons is proposed. The model provides a physicochemical explanation for a number of important physiological phenomena, such as the neuromuscular paralysis, the molecular mechanism of neurological memory, and the effect of some neurotoxins and drugs.

The physiology and pathophysiology of human breath-hold diving.

This is a brief overview of physiological reactions, limitations, and pathophysiological mechanisms associated with human breath-hold diving. Breath-hold duration and ability to withstand compression at depth are the two main challenges that have been overcome to an amazing degree as evidenced by the current world records in breath-hold duration at 10:12 min and depth of 214 m. The quest for even further performance enhancements continues among competitive breath-hold divers, even if absolute physiological limits are being approached as indicated by findings of pulmonary edema and alveolar hem

Issues concerning the construction of a metabolic model for neuronal activation.

The metabolic events underlying neuronal activity still remain the object of intense debate, in spite of the considerable amount of information provided from different experimental techniques. Indeed, several attempts at linking the cellular metabolic phenomena with the macroscopic physiological changes have not yet attained foolproof conclusions. The difficulties in drawing definitive conclusions are due primarily to the heterogeneity of the experimental procedures used in different laboratories, and also given the impossibility of extrapolating the findings obtained under stationary conditio

Leaky Bodies, Bawdy Books: Gonorrhea and Reading in Eighteenth-Century Britain.

In eighteenth-century Britain, reading lewd books was understood to exacerbate gonorrhea. That pathology corresponded to a specific physiological model, which historians describe as the leaky male body. This article demonstrates how the connection between reading and gonorrhea correlated to three phenomena: 1) the neuro-sexual economy of bodily fluids; 2) the effects of reading on the sensible mind and body; and 3) the crossover of erotic and medical literatures. Aware of the physiological power of imagination, authors intentionally wrote to elicit strong physiological and sexual responses in

[Manometric analysis of the oral and pharyngeal phases of the act of swallowing].

Manometric analysis of swallowing was conducted on 35 subjects, aged 44 to 60. The course of physiological changes in pressure during oral and pharyngeal phase of swallowing was analysed. To objectify the evaluation of analysed phenomena, parameters that include both pressure values inside pharynx and oesophagus and time dependences connected with changes in their value were used as proposed by the authors of this paper and as applied by other authors involved with these issues.

[Phlebography of the upper extremity: assessment of various x-ray signs].

The article reports on the findings obtained in 56 serial phlebographies of the upper extremity. Using 17 phlebographies without pathological findings as basis, the physiological phenomena of venous contrasting in the region of the shoulder and arm are examined. The remaining phlebograms with pathological findings are assessed according to different criteria, such as localisation and extent of venous vascular occlusion, visualisation of vascular clot and formation of collaterals resulting in collateral circulation.

Hypothalamic neurogenesis in the adult brain.

Adult-born new neurons are continuously added to the hippocampus and the olfactory bulb to serve aspects of learning and perceptual functions. Recent evidence establishes a third neurogenic niche in the ventral hypothalamic parenchyma surrounding the third ventricle that ensures the plasticity of specific brain circuits to stabilize physiological functions such as the energy-balance regulatory system. Hypothalamic lesion studies have demonstrated that regions associated with reproduction-related functions are also capable of recruiting newborn neurons to restore physiological functions and cou

Transdiagnostic investigation into the relationship between mirror neuron system activity, echo-phenomena, and theory of mind in major psychoses.

The association between social cognition and putative mirror neuron system (MNS)-activity in major psychoses might be contingent upon frontal dysregulation. We used a transdiagnostic ecological approach to enrich a specific behavioral phenotype (echophenomena or hyper-imitative states) across clinical diagnoses (mania and schizophrenia) to compare behavioral and physiological markers of social cognition and frontal disinhibition. We examined 114 participants with schizophrenia (N = 53) and mania (N = 61) for the presence and severity of echo-phenomena (echopraxia, incidental, and induced echol

Maternal and Early-Life Nutrition and Health.

Nutritional challenges prior to and during gestation, lactation, and early life are known to influence the lifelong health of the infant. In this editorial, I briefly discuss the 13 articles published in this Special Issue, "Maternal and Early-Life Nutrition and Health". This Special Issue discusses topics including maternal nutrition behaviors, maternal overnutrition/obesity, maternal iron deficiency, breastfeeding, and others. This issue paves the way to better understand perinatal nutrition and how it can impact maternal and offspring health.

Reorganization of finger coordination patterns during adaptation to rotation and scaling of a newly learned sensorimotor transformation.

We examined how people organize redundant kinematic control variables (finger joint configurations) while learning to make goal-directed movements of a virtual object (a cursor) within a low-dimensional task space (a computer screen). Subjects participated in three experiments performed on separate days. Learning progressed rapidly on day 1, resulting in reduced target capture error and increased cursor trajectory linearity. On days 2 and 3, one group of subjects adapted to a rotation of the nominal map, imposed either stepwise or randomly over trials. Another group experienced a scaling disto
