Correlation of collagen damage and failure mechanics in porcine pia-arachnoid complex.

Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) accounts for approximately 75% of all TBI cases, and the mechanisms are still poorly understood, in part due to limitations of current diagnostic tools. Yet, there is a critical need to detect the presence of mTBI to mitigate risk of further injury. In this study, we explore the potential of collagen hybridizing peptides (CHPs), which selectively bind to damaged collagen, to detect damage in the pia-arachnoid complex (PAC), a major load-transferring interface during head trauma. To generate damage, porcine PAC samples underwent peel tests. Peak force to failu

Central serotonergic nerves project to the pial vessels of the brain.

Serotonin is strongly implicated in the aetiology of several cerebrovascular (circulatory) diseases, including stroke, migraine and vasospasm. Previous studies have suggested the existence of an indoleaminergic system of perivascular nerves in large cerebral arteries of the lamprey. In addition, some authors have observed that cerebral arteries (such as the vertebrobasilar system of the rabbit) and microvessels may take up serotonin and 5-hydroxytryptophan in various species. However, neither large cerebral arteries nor microvessels (primarily capillaries) directly control, or change, cerebral

Perivascular action of the local anaesthetic, lidocaine, on pial terminal arterioles: direct observations on the microcirculation.

Considerable controversy currently exists with respect to whether or not local anaesthetics exert direct action on cerebral arteriolar tone. In situ experiments were therefore undertaken on pial terminal arterioles of rats to determine whether or not perivascular application of lidocaine exerts any action on such cerebral vessels. Vessel size was assessed with an image-splitting television microscope recording system. The vessels studied ranged in size from 25 to 30 micron. Lidocaine was applied in artificial CSF in dosages of 0.01, 0.1, 1.0 and 2.0 mg. Significant dose-dependent dilatation (i

Necrotizing vasculitis in the central nervous systems of two dogs.

Two dogs with rapidly progressing paralysis had polyarteritis involving medium-sized to large arterioles and small arteries of the spinal meninges. Rupture of structurally weakened vessels caused massive hemorrhage with compression and infarction of the spinal cord. The cause of the vasculitis was not determined.

Primary intradural myxoid chondrosarcoma: a case report and review in the literature.

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: Chondrosarcomas are extremely rare cartilaginous tumours that typically usually are associated with bone. Therapeutic experience with primary spinal mesenchymal chondrosarcomas is also extremely limited. The exact origin of rare intradural spinal chondrosarcomas remains obscure. We report the first case in the literature of a primary intradural myxoid chondrosarcoma. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: This 40-year-old man experienced a 3 month history with back pain. The results of his neurological examination were normal. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)demonstrated at the T12

[Hypothesis concerning the anatomical basis of cauda equina syndrome and transient nerve root irritation after spinal anesthesia].

OBJECTIVE: Cauda equine syndrome is a rare neurological complication associated with subarachnoid anesthesia, and particularly with the use of 5% hyperbaric lidocaine and small gauge catheters. Our aim was to study a possible anatomical factor that might impede adequate dilution of local anesthetic and explain the development of cauda equine syndrome and transitory radicular irritation. MATERIAL AND METHOD: The spinal dura matters and their contents from two male human cadavers were examined after organs had been extracted for transplantation. Both men had recently died at ages 56 and 65 year

[Electrographic registration of metabolic changes in the cerebral cortex evoked by sensory stimuli].

In chronic experiments on rabbits, sensory stimuli from platinum electrodes, located on pia mater in different parts of the cerebral cortex, may produce negative changes of the electrode potential or bioelectrochemical potential (BEChP) lasting from one to dozens of seconds with an amplitude from tenths of millivolts to several millivolts. Sometimes the amplitude of BEChP changes amounted to dozens of millivolts. When recorded from dura mater the changes were much smaller, and in the bone they could not be detected. The evoked BEChP changes appeared only against the background of high initial

Intracranial pial single-channel arteriovenous fistula presenting with significant brain edema.

The authors report a rare case of pial single-channel arteriovenous fistula presenting with significant brain edema. A 51-year-old woman was admitted with a 5-day history of headache and nausea, followed by consciousness disturbance. Computed tomography showed cerebellar swelling with obstructive hydrocephalus. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed extensive vasogenic edema in the cerebellum bilaterally. Angiography demonstrated 2 different arteriovenous shunts (AVSs) at peripheral branches of the right anterior inferior cerebellar artery. One was located on the suboccipital surface. It drained

Reparation of a severe case of aplasia cutis congenita with engineered skin.

Aplasia cutis congenita (ACC) is an uncommon congenital malformation. It is characterized by defects of the skin that occur most frequently on the scalp along the midline, but can also be localized on the trunk, face and limbs, usually with a symmetrical distribution. When it is localized in the skull it can extend to the dura mater, leaving only the thin pia mater to protect the brain. The most common complications related to this disorder are infection, hemorrhage, and, in defects localized on the vertex, meningitis and bleeding from the sagittal sinus can occur with dramatic consequences. [Two cases of cerebral amyloid angiopathy in which white matter lesions appearing after brain biopsy got improvement without immunotherapy].

The first case was a 75-year-old woman with intermittent sensory impairment of the left hand. FLAIR of the head MRI revealed hyperintensity along the pia mater in the right parieto-temporal lobe with few microbleeds. Our second case was a 78-year-old man who presented with motor aphasia. His MRI showed swollen cortex on FLAIR and cortical hemosiderosis on T2* weighted imaging of the right cerebral hemisphere. Pathological findings indicated the first case as cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA)-related inflammation and the second case as CAA. Additionally, after brain biopsy, widespread white mat

Localization of TRPA1 channels and characterization of TRPA1 mediated responses in dural and pial arteries in vivo after intracarotid infusion of Na2S.

BACKGROUND: The Transient Receptor Potential Ankyrin 1 (TRPA1) channel might play a role in migraine. However, different mechanisms for this have been suggested. The purpose of our study was to investigate the localization and significance of TRPA1 channels in rat pial and dural arteries. METHODS: Immunofluorescence microscopy was used to localize TRPA1 channels in dural arteries, pial arteries, dura mater and trigeminal ganglion. The genuine closed cranial window model was used to examine the effect of Na2S, a donor of the TRPA1 channel opener H2S, on the diameter of pial and dural arteries.

Biomechanical considerations in the surgical management of cervical spondylotic myelopathy.

Based on a review of previous studies and our opinion, biomechanical considerations suggest the following guidelines for the surgical management of CSM. It is not recommended that the dura mater, the pia mater, and the dentate ligaments be transected in the surgical treatment of CSM. Anterior decompression and fusion, preferably with the Smith-Robinson technique, is recommended for patients with anterior impingement of the spinal cord at one or two levels in the absence of a narrow spinal canal. This procedure is also advantageous when there is significant radiculopathy associated with the lev

The cellular distribution of aldolase isozymes in rat kidney and brain determined in tissue sections by the immuno-histochemical method.

The use of the immuno-histochemical method permits the localization of aldolase isozymes in tissue sections. Upon incubating a section with a monomer-specific antiserum, isozymes containing that monomer remain in the section, whereas other cytoplasmic enzymes diffuse out of the section. If soluble antigen is added subsequently, it is bound by the tissue-bound antibody. These antibody fixed aldolases can then be stained by the use of a tetrazolium test linked to substrate hydrolysis. In this way it was demonstrated that isozymes of aldolase containing mostly the A monomer are predominantly loca

Cerebrospinal fluid draining lymphatics in health and disease: advances and controversies.

The meninges, consisting of the dura, arachnoid and pia mater that surround the brain and spinal cord, have been recognized from the earliest anatomical studies. First identified in 1787, lymphatic vessels in the dura are now receiving greater attention as their contribution to cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) clearance in diverse neurological conditions is being investigated. New methods have increased the understanding of dural lymphatics, but much is still being learned about their heterogeneity, intracranial and extracranial connections, and factors that govern their functions and maintenance. Frontoethmoidal encephalocele presenting in concert with schizencephaly.

BACKGROUND: Schizencephaly is a rare defect which is identified as clefts that are lined with grey matter extending from the ependyma of the cerebral ventricles to the pia mater. An encephalocele occurs due to failure of neural tube closure resulting in a gap through which cerebrospinal fluid and meninges can bulge into a pouch. There have been rare instances when these two defects have presented simultaneously. CASE DESCRIPTION: We report a case of a 17-year-old child who was brought by his parents with complaint of swelling over his nose and forehead and aggressive behavior since birth. Mag
