Seasonal Effect on Tree Species Classification in an Urban Environment Using Hyperspectral Data, LiDAR, and an Object- Oriented Approach.

The objective of the current study was to analyze the seasonal effect on differentiating tree species in an urban environment using multi-temporal hyperspectral data, Light Detection And Ranging (LiDAR) data, and a tree species database collected from the field. Two Airborne Imaging Spectrometer for Applications (AISA) hyperspectral images were collected, covering the Summer and Fall seasons. In order to make both datasets spatially and spectrally compatible, several preprocessing steps, including band reduction and a spatial degradation, were performed. An object-oriented classification was p

Environmental influences on the development of spruce needle cuticles.

Seedlings of Norway [Picea abies (L.) Karst.], red (P. rubens Sarg.), black [P. mariana (Mill) B.S.P.] and white [P. glauca (Moench.) Voss] spruce were grown from bud break to bud set outdoors, in the greenhouse, and in controlled environment chambers. The outdoor and greenhouse treatments also included adjacent shaded (50%) seedlings. The effects of growth environment on needle epicuticular wax production and morphology, and on needle wettability were investigated. Red and black spruce exhibited free growth in addition to determinate growth, but only in the greenhouse. Although relative growt

Fungi associated with Norway spruce and its bark beetles detoxify spruce defense compounds by conjugation to α-ribose.

Fungi readily colonize the inner bark (phloem) of spruce and other conifers despite these tissues having a high concentration of antifungal defense metabolites. These compounds include stilbenes, flavonoids and other phenolic substances, mostly present as glucosides. Yet the underlying biochemical mechanisms by which fungi resist conifer phenolics remain largely unresolved. Using untargeted metabolomics, structural elucidation and biological and biochemical assays, we investigated how and why fungi metabolize the major phenolics of Norway spruce (Picea abies). Various fungi, including those as

Styrene, (+)-trans-(1R,4S,5S)-4-Thujanol and Oxygenated Monoterpenes Related to Host Stress Elicit Strong Electrophysiological Responses in the Bark Beetle Ips typographus.

Bark beetles kill apparently vigorous conifers during epidemics by means of pheromone-mediated aggregation. During non-endemic conditions the beetles are limited to use trees with poor defense, like wind-thrown. To find olfactory cues that help beetles to distinguish between trees with strong or weak defense, we collected volatiles from the bark surface of healthy felled or standing Picea abies trees. Furthermore, living trees were treated with methyl jasmonate in order to induce defense responses. Volatiles were analyzed by combined gas chromatography and electroantennographic detection (GC-E

Phylogenetic-Pheromone Associations Obscured by Stabilising Selection and Natal Tree Effect in a Tree-Killing Bark Beetle.

Insects are highly reliant on chemical cues such as pheromones to facilitate communication and navigation. Some of the roles of pheromones include attracting and finding mates and conspecifics, and in these cases, we expect stabilising selection to dampen within-population pheromone variation. On the other hand, standing pheromone variation may lead to barriers to gene flow and saltational shifts that facilitate divergence and speciation. We investigated the relationships between pheromone variation and genetic variation in the spruce beetle, Dendroctonus rufipennis Kirby, a bark beetle that i

Spruce Bark-Extracted Lignin and Tannin-Based Bioresin-Adhesives: Effect of Curing Temperatures on the Thermal Properties of the Resins.

In this study, formaldehyde-free bioresin adhesives were synthesised from lignin and tannin, which were obtained from softwood bark. The extraction was done via organosolv treatment and hot water extraction, respectively. A non-volatile, non-toxic aldehyde, glyoxal, was used as a substitute for formaldehyde in order to modify the chemical structure of both the lignin and tannin. The glyoxal modification reaction was confirmed by ATR-FTIR spectroscopy. Three different resin formulations were prepared using modified lignin along with the modified tannin. The thermal properties of the modified li

Multigene phylogenies and morphological characterization of five new Ophiostoma spp. associated with spruce-infesting bark beetles in China.

Ophiostoma spp. (Ophiostomatales, Ascomycota) are well-known fungi associated with bark beetles (Coleoptera: Scolytinae). Some of these are serious tree pathogens, while the majority is blue-stain agents of timber. In recent years, various bark beetle species have been attacking spruce forests in Qinghai province, China, causing significant damage. A preliminary survey was done to explore the diversity of the ophiostomatoid fungal associates of these beetles. The aims of the present study were to identify and characterize new Ophiostoma spp. associated with spruce-infesting bark beetles in Qin

Natural coniferous resin lacquer in treatment of toenail onychomycosis: an observational study.

In in vitro tests, natural coniferous resin from the Norway spruce (Picea abies) is strongly antifungal. In this observational study, we tested the clinical effectiveness of a lacquer composed of spruce resin for topical treatment of onychomycosis. Thirty-seven patients with clinical diagnosis of onychomycosis were enrolled into the study. All patients used topical resin lacquer treatment daily for 9 months. A mycological culture and potassium hydroxide (KOH) stain were done from nail samples in the beginning and in the end of the study. Treatment was considered effective, if a mycological cul

Leptographium tereforme sp. nov. and other Ophiostomatales isolated from the root-feeding bark beetle Hylurgus ligniperda in California.

The redhaired pine bark beetle Hylurgus ligniperda (F.) is native to Europe but was discovered in Los Angeles, California, in 2003. This root-and stump-feeding beetle is a common vector of Ophiostomatales, which are potential tree pathogens or causes of blue stain of conifer sapwood. In this study Ophiostomatales were isolated on a cycloheximide-amended medium from 118 adult H. ligniperda collected from infested logs of Pinus halepensis and P. pinea at two sites in California. In total eight species of Ophiostomatales were identified and seven species that occasionally were isolated were unide

Lecithin-based nanoemulsions of traditional herbal wound healing agents and their effect on human skin cells.

In previous studies, lecithin-based nanoemulsions (NEs) have been shown to be skin friendly drug carrier systems. Due to their nontoxic properties, NEs might also be suitable as wound healing agents. Hence, different O/W NEs based on lecithin Lipoid® S 75 and plant oils or medium chain triglycerides were produced and characterised. Two lipophilic natural wound healing agents, a betulin-enriched extract from birch bark (BET) and a purified spruce balm (PSB), were successfully incorporated and their effects on primary human skin cells were studied in vitro. Phylogenetic relationships, host affinity, and geographic structure of boreal and arctic endophytes from three major plant lineages.

Although associated with all plants, fungal endophytes (microfungi that live within healthy plant tissues) represent an unknown proportion of fungal diversity. While there is a growing appreciation of their ecological importance and human uses, little is known about their host specificity, geographic structure, or phylogenetic relationships. We surveyed endophytic Ascomycota from healthy photosynthetic tissues of three plant species (Huperzia selago, Picea mariana, and Dryas integrifolia, representing lycophytes, conifers, and angiosperms, respectively) in northern and southern boreal forest (

Treeline stress amplifies divergence in carbon-water responses between evergreen and deciduous conifers.

As alpine forests face increasingly intensified thermal and hydric constraints under climate change, understanding species-specific ecophysiological responses to environmental drivers across altitudinal habitats is essential. Yet whether coexisting evergreen and deciduous conifers adopt contrasting carbon-water regulation strategies under altitudinal stress remains unclear. We examined seasonal gas exchange dynamics in mature spruce (Picea meyeri) and larch (Larix principis-rupprechtii) across contrasting altitudes in the Luya Mountain, northern China. Net photosynthetic rate (Pn), stomatal co

Effects of ozone and acidic fog on red spruce needle epicuticular wax production, chemical composition, cuticular membrane ultrastructure and needle wettability.

One-year-old red spruce (Picea rubens Sarg.) seedlings were exposed, from bud break, to ozone (O3 ) and acidic fog for 14, 42 or 77 days. Ozone was more damaging than acidic fog to epicuticular wax. Wax quantity on needles exposed to charcoal-filtered air (CFA) and pH 4.2 fog (control) increased from 14 to 42 days, but decreased by 77 days. Exposure of elongating needles to 70 ppb O3 and pH 4.2 fog reduced the rate of de novo wax synthesis. Red spruce wax is composed of secondary alcohols (50%), nonacosane diols (25%), alkyl esters (12%), primary alcohols (6 %), estolides (2 %), fatty acids (3

Regional variation in surface properties of Norway spruce and scots pine needles in relation to forest decline.

Measurements of leaf wettability (contact angle), amounts of epicuticular wax and of surface dust are reported for Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and Norway spruce (Picea abies (L) Karst) trees growing at 12 sites in Europe from SW Germany to NE Scotland. At each site, three year classes (current year, 1 and 2-year-old) of needles were sampled from the mid-crown of up to 12 trees. Trees were selected at random from two strata, those showing visible decline symptoms (i.e. loss of needles or discoloration) and those apparently healthy. Needles for analysis were taken from apparently healthy (g

Development of a Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification (LAMP) Assay for Rapid Molecular Identification of the Bark Beetle Ips hauseri (Coleoptera: Curculionidae).

Ips hauseri Reitter is the most important wood-boring pest of natural Tianshan spruce (Picea schrenkiana) forests and is listed as an A2 quarantine pest by the European and Mediterranean Plant Protection Organization (EPPO). Because the beetle is small and cryptic and its immature stages cannot be reliably identified by morphology, a rapid molecular identification method is urgently needed. Here, we targeted the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene, designed a set of I. hauseri-specific LAMP primers, and established a visually interpretable LAMP assay using a WarmStart color

Air pollution and forest health: establishing cause and effect in the forest.

I participated in a NATO Advanced Research Workshop titled “Effects of Air Pollution on Forest Health and Biodiversity in Forests of the Carpathian Mountains,” in Stara Lesna, Slovakia from May 22–26, 2001. Researchers from Canada, Czech Republic, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Ukraine, and the U.S. met to present their results from a three-year cooperative study of tree health and air quality monitoring in forests of the Carpathian Mountains in Central Europe. Much of the work reported related to assessing the crown condition of trees in permanent plots in natural or managed (planted) forests in

Radial growth resilience assessment and management implications for major planted forests in the west loess plateau based on improved parameters.

Under the background of global climate change, frequent and severe drought have led to forest decline and tree mortality, ultimately threatening the structure, function, and stability of forest ecosystems. However, forest ecosystems and individual trees exhibit a certain degree of growth resilience to the impacts of drought. A profound understanding of the growth resilience of forest ecosystems and individual trees to drought is of great significance for maintaining the stability of forest ecosystems, particularly for plantation ecosystems. Based on an improved resilience assessment framework
