Parasitic diversity found in coprolites of camelids during the Holocene.

Knowledge of parasitic infections to which fauna was exposed in the past provides information on the geographical origin of some parasites, on the possible dispersal routes and for archaeological fauna on the potential zoonotic risk that human and animal populations could be exposed. The aim of the present study was to examine the gastrointestinal parasite present in camelid coprolites collected from the archaeological site Cerro Casa de Piedra, cave 7 (CCP7), Patagonia, Argentina. Coprolites were collected from different stratified sequences dating from the Pleistocene-Holocene transition to

Disseminated infection with Trichosporon beigelii. Report of a case and review of the cutaneous and histologic manifestations.

BACKGROUND: Trichosporonosis is a potentially life-threatening disseminated infection with Trichosporon beigelii, the causative agent of the white piedra. Systemic infection by this fungus has been most frequently described in immunocompromised hosts with neutropenia, but one case has been reported in the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome setting. We report a second case of trichosporonosis in a patient with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome and review the clinical and histologic characteristics of cutaneous involvement with this opportunistic fungal pathogen. OBSERVATIONS: Trichosporonosis

Comparative genomic analysis of clinically relevant human skin-associated fungi.

Fungal skin infections represent a significant global health burden, affecting approximately one billion people annually. Despite their prevalence and major global health impact, the molecular mechanisms underlying pathogenicity remain largely uncharacterized. Here we present high quality genomic datasets for 51 fungal strains, representing highly prevalent and clinically relevant species associated with human skin infections. Comparative genomics reveal substantial variation in genome size and gene contents, indicating genome compaction occurred as the fungi transitioned from free-living to h

Adhesion and biofilm formation by two clinical isolates of Trichosporon Cutaneum in various environmental conditions.

Trichosporon spp. is an emerging opportunistic pathogen and a common cause of both superficial and invasive infections. Although Trichosporon asahii is the most frequently isolated species, Trichosporon cutaneum is also widely observed, as it is the predominant agent in cases of white Piedra and onychomycosis. Trichosporon spp. is a known to produce biofilms, which serve as one of its virulence mechanisms, however, there is limited data available on biofilms formed by T. cutaneum. Thus, the aim of this study was to assess the adhesion and biofilm formation of two clinical isolates of T. cutane

Differential diagnosis of trichosporonosis using conventional histopathological stains and electron microscopy.

AIMS: Although Trichosporon is a causative pathogen of white piedra and summer-type hypersensitivity pneumonitis, fatal disseminated trichosporonosis cases have recently been increasing. However, Trichosporon is often confused with other fungi, especially Candida, in pathological specimens. The aim was to determine the utility of histopathological stains and electron microscopy for diagnosing trichosporonosis. METHODS AND RESULTS: Autopsy cases of trichosporonosis, candidiasis, aspergillosis and cryptococcosis were investigated using histopathological stains and electron microscopy. Using Gro

Identification of Trichosporon yeast isolates from superficial infections in male patients from Central Brazil: an approach to the diversity of infections caused by this basidiomycete fungus.

The genus Trichosporon are currently recognized as opportunistic pathogens capable of causing superficial "white piedra" infections and potentially fatal invasive diseases (Trichosporonosis). In this work, determine the agent Trichosporon spp. isolated from the skin and appendages of a male population group in the Central-West region of Brazil. The isolates were analyzed by phenotypic, biochemical and molecular methods. Twenty-five strains of Trichosporon were isolated: T. asahii (18; 72%), followed by T. inkin (4; 16%) and T. faecale (3; 12%). Skin infections were the most affected (16; 64%)

SIR-SI model with a Gaussian transmission rate: Understanding the dynamics of dengue outbreaks in Lima, Peru.

INTRODUCTION: Dengue is transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito as a vector, and a recent outbreak was reported in several districts of Lima, Peru. We conducted a modeling study to explain the transmission dynamics of dengue in three of these districts according to the demographics and climatology. METHODOLOGY: We used the weekly distribution of dengue cases in the Comas, Lurigancho, and Puente Piedra districts, as well as the temperature data to investigate the transmission dynamics. We used maximum likelihood minimization and the human susceptible-infected-recovered and vector susceptible

Molecular identification of yeasts from the order Trichosporonales causing superficial infections.

BACKGROUND: The molecular reclassification of the order Trichosporonales placed the medically relevant Trichosporon species into three genera of the family Trichosporonaceae: Cutaneotrichosporon, Trichosporon, and Apiotrichum. From the clinical and epidemiological standpoint, it is important to identify any species of the family Trichosporonaceae because they present different antifungal susceptibility profiles. In Mexico, little is known about trichosporonosis etiology because the fungi are identified through phenotypic methods. AIMS: To identify at a molecular level 12 yeast isolates morfol

Antifungal susceptibility testing of Trichosporon beigelii to imidazole compounds.

Twenty-two strains of Trichosporon beigelii have been tested for susceptibility to imidazole compounds. Ten strains were isolated from untreated genital white piedra lesions and 12 were from the same patients following treatment failure with imidazole compounds. Agar dilution and disk elution methods were compared using two media: yeast nitrogen base and antibiotic assay medium 3 (Difco). Antifungal agents tested were econazole, miconazole, ketoconazole, clotrimazole, and amphotericin B in concentrations of 0.0625-32 micrograms/mL. The most consistent results occurred with antibiotic assay med

Trichosporon isolation from human ungueal infections: is there a pathogenic role?

BACKGROUND: Although dermatophytes are considered the major cause of onychomycosis, many reports have incriminated non-dermatophyte moulds and yeasts in the disease's etiology. Successive Trichosporon isolation from onychomycosis has led to the genus being suspected as a nail primary pathogen. OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of Trichosporon isolation in onychomycosis patients who attended a mycology diagnostic service in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, between January 2003 and December 2006. The study also includes a worldwide review on Trichosporon isolation prevalence in ungueal disease, emp

Pediculosis capitis: a hidden threat in tropical regions.

Pediculosis capitis, caused by Pediculus humanus var. capitis, is a common ectoparasitic infestation primarily affecting school-aged children worldwide. It is transmitted through direct head-to-head contact and occasionally via fomites. Although it is not a vector for diseases, it causes significant psychosocial and economic burdens, including scalp itching, parental anxiety, absenteeism and social stigma. The head louse life cycle includes egg, nymph and adult stages, with the entire cycle completed in 21-30 days. Diagnosis is based on identifying live lice or viable eggs, often aided by wet
