Pure basal cell carcinomas/basaloid carcinomas (BCC/BC) from only basal cells in the urinary bladder have not been reported so far. Our aim in this study was to present three BC cases showing distinct pilomatrixoma-like keratinization (matrixial) and sebaceous differentiation in the bladder in transurethral resection material, without urothelial and squamous carcinoma components, and to discuss the concept of BCC/BC in visceral organs. In three cases, it invaded the muscularis propria. Immunohistochemically, Keratin-7 and EMA were almost completely negative, while GATA3 was positive in very fe

Rubinstein-Taybi Syndrome is a rare congenital multisystem syndrome inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern caused by mutations in CREBBP and EP300 genes in approximately 60% and 10% respectively. These genes encode two highly evolutionarily conserved, ubiquitously expressed, and homologous lysine-acetyltransferases, that are involved in number of basic cellular activities, such as DNA repair, cell proliferation, growth, differentiation, apoptosis of cells, and tumor suppression. It is mainly characterized by global developmental delay, moderate to severe intellectual disability, postnatal

BACKGROUND Pilomatricoma, also known as Malherbe's calcifying epithelioma, is a benign adnexal tumor originating from hair follicle matrix cells and occurs predominantly in children and young adults. Its presentation in an older adult is exceptionally rare and can pose diagnostic challenges. We report a rare case of pilomatricoma in an 86-year-old patient. CASE REPORT We report the case of an 86-year-old man who presented with a tender, subcutaneous cyst on the right scalp. The lesion had been evolving for several months, enlarging from approximately 5 cm to 8 cm. His medical history included

Pilomatrix carcinoma (PC) is a rare malignant adnexal tumor originating from follicular matrix cells primarily impacting Caucasian males. This review provides a comprehensive analysis of scientific literature on PC through an exploration of 206 cases reported between 1980 and 2024. We discuss the epidemiology, clinical presentation, histopathology, and diagnostic challenges of PC, and explore various treatment methods for this rare malignancy as well as their associated outcomes. Wide local excision (WLE) is the most common management method, but Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) may yield super

Pilomatrix carcinoma (PMC), also known as pilomatrical carcinoma, is a rare, malignant tumor of the hair follicle that may arise from a benign pilomatricoma or de novo and carries a high risk of recurrence and metastasis. This study sought to investigate and compare surgical modalities for PMC, including reported outcomes and recurrence rates. In July 2024, a systematic review of PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases on surgical modalities and PMC was conducted. Randomized controlled trials and observational studies were included. The search yielded 257 articles; after the application o

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous pilomatrical carcinosarcoma (CS) is a very rare biphasic tumor composed of admixed epithelial and mesenchymal malignant cells, with limited information on its pathogenesis. We report a case of pilomatrical CS of the scalp with comparative immunohistochemical and molecular analysis together with a review of the literature.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 74-year-old woman presented with a rapidly growing long-standing tumor of the scalp. The tumor was surgically resected. Histologically, the tumor was 25 mm in diameter, and was composed of carcinoma showing a clear pilomatrical diff

Pilomatrical carcinosarcoma is a very rare entity, with only six cases reported until now. This report describes the case of a 100-year-old woman with a mass on the left temple that had existed for several decades but had recently grown in size. Histology showed an asymmetric lesion composed of basaloid cells, spindle cells, and "shadow" or "ghost" cells. Cells had atypical hyperchromatic nuclei with prominent nucleoli, high mitotic activity, and atypical mitosis. In the central area, an epidermal cyst-like structure was seen. The diagnosis of pilomatrical carcinosarcoma was rendered. This cas

Pilomatricoma, also known as calcifying epithelioma of Malherbe, is an asymptomatic, slow-growing, benign dermal neoplasm that originates from hair cortex cells. The most common sites are the head and neck (68.2%), followed by the trunk (14.4%) and the upper (15.3%) and lower (2%) extremities. The majority (60%-70%) of tumors develop in the first 2 decades of life. A typical pilomatricoma presents as a firm, calcified, dermal nodule appearing as a solid mass in subcutaneous tissue on computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging. This article describes the case of a 42-year-old man who pres

Pilomatrix carcinoma is an uncommon malignant neoplasm originating from the hair follicle matrix. It occurs more frequently in head and neck region and rarely on the eyelid and eyebrow. It is often clinically misdiagnosed. The diagnosis is confirmed by excision biopsy and histopathological examination. A 68-year-old woman presented with a mass on her left eyebrow mimicking sebaceous cyst. An excisional biopsy with 4-mm margin was performed under frozen section. Histopathology demonstrated pilomatrix carcinoma with cystic degeneration. Periocular malignancies can have unusual origins with speci

An 18-year-old male adolescent was referred to our department for the presence of multiple skin nodules since the age of 9 years. At the age of 22 months the patient was diagnosed as having myotonic dystrophy (Steinert's disease). So far, nine lesions like these have been excised and histologically analysed, two located on the left arm, one on the neck and one on the scalp. A skin examination revealed three nodular lesions, two localised on the scalp (Fig. 1) and one on the trunk (Fig. 2); the lesions ranged from 0.5 to 3.5 cm, and were hard on palpation and asymptomatic, with elevated, smooth

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Primary cutaneous mucinous carcinoma (PCMC) is a rare low-grade malignant neoplasm derived from the sweat glands. Local recurrence of PCMC occurs frequently, but these lesions rarely metastasize. Due to the absence of classical demographic and clinical characteristics, PCMCs masquerade as sebaceous cyst, lipoma, pilomatrixoma, chalazion, or squamous cell carcinoma. This misdiagnosis frequently leads to incomplete surgical excision which necessitates further surgical therapy for a curative intent.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of PCMC in a 45-year-old woman

Malherbe's calcifying epithelioma (also called trichomatricoma, pilomatrixoma or pilomatricoma) is an uncommon benign cutaneous tumor, which takes the form of a solitary, firm, asymptomatic, slowly growing nodule, developed subcutaneously on the face, neck, or proximal upper extremity. With an incidence of 1/800-1000 cutaneous tumors, pilomatricoma is more common in the first two decades of life, predominantly affecting the women. Multiple locations and associations between this entity and other diseases such as Steinert's myotonic dystrophy or Gardner syndrome have been described in the liter

Melanocytic matricoma is a rare benign pilar tumor characterized by matrical differentiation and interspersed dendritic melanocytes. It may show cellular atypia and brisk mitotic activity. Histological characterization of some lesions may be difficult. In addition, because the reported cases are few and have limited follow-up, there is insufficient experience to define outcome-based criteria for malignancy. Some cases of melanocytic matricoma with more prominent atypia have been reported as malignant, but their clinical behavior is uncertain. We present a melanocytic matricoma with intersperse

BACKGROUND: Pilomatricoma is a benign tumour that originates in the outer sheath of the hair follicle root. The clinical diagnosis of this rare entity is often missed, possibly due to a lack of awareness. Its characteristic cytomorphological features are sheets of ghost cells, basaloid cells, calcification and foreign body giant cell reaction. However, the above features may not all be present in all cases, rendering cytological diagnosis difficult.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study included all cases of pilomatricoma diagnosed on fine needle aspiration over a period of 4 years.
