Phosphorus availability governs the fate of photosynthetic carbon in the plant-soil-microbe system of Pinus massoniana under elevated CO2.

The effects of elevated CO2 (eCO2) on tree growth and carbon dynamics may be constrained by soil phosphorus (P) availability. However, whether their interaction shapes the fate of recent photosynthetic carbon allocation along plant-soil-microbe compartments is rarely explored. Potted Pinus massoniana seedlings were grown under two levels of CO2 (aCO2: 420 ppm and eCO2: 800 ppm) and four P treatments (0, 25, 50, and 100 kg P ha-1 yr-1) in Open-Top Chambers, with 13C labeling employed to trace allocation of recent carbon among plant organs, soil, and microbes. Biomass, structural, and non-struct

A systematic review of the health effects of Acacia, Eucalyptus, and Pinus wood dust: Implications for South African occupational exposure limits.

South Africa's commercially planted timber is mainly from the non-native genera Acacia (acacia), Eucalyptus (eucalyptus), and Pinus (pine). These trees are popular because they are fast-growing, stress-tolerant, and commercially profitable. During timber processing, woodworkers can be exposed to wood dust through inhalation or dermal contact. Occupational exposure limits (OELs) have been developed to help protect workers against adverse health effects from overexposure to wood dust. In South Africa, the Regulations for Hazardous Chemical Agents of 2021 (RHCA 2021) list an inhalable OEL-maximum

Protective mechanisms of purified polyphenols from pinecones of Pinus koraiensis on spleen tissues in tumor-bearing S180 mice in vivo.

The previous study evaluated the antitumor activity and the underlying mechanism of the purified polyphenols from pinecones of Pinus koraiensis (PPP-40) using a tumor-bearing S180 mice model. This study was designed to evaluate the protective effects of PPP-40 on spleen tissues of S180 mice in vivo. Pretreatment with PPP-40 (150 mg per kg BW per D) could significantly inhibit tumor growth, enhance spleen index and prevent the decline of haematological parameters of S180 mice induced by the tumor microenvironment. Moreover, the treatment with PPP-40 was shown to significantly inhibit splenocyte

Actinobacteria possessing antimicrobial and antioxidant activities isolated from the pollen of scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) grown on the Baikal shore.

Isolated ecosystems existing under specific environmental conditions have been shown to be promising sources of new strains of actinobacteria. The taiga forest of Baikal Siberia has not been well studied, and its actinobacterial population remains uncharacterized. The proximity between the huge water mass of Lake Baikal and high mountain ranges influences the structure and diversity of the plant world in Siberia. Here, we report the isolation of eighteen actinobacterial strains from male cones of Scots pine trees (Pinus sylvestris) growing on the shore of the ancient Lake Baikal in Siberia. In

First Report of Pine Wilt Disease Caused by Bursaphelenchus xylophilus on Pinus thunbergii in the Inland City of Zibo, Shandong, China.

The pinewood nematode (PWN) Bursaphelenchus xylophilus (Steiner & Buhrer 1934) Nickle 1970 is the causal agent of pine wilt disease. It is especially damaging in East Asian countries, including Japan, China, and Korea. In China, the nematode has been found in Anhui, Guangdoung, Guizhou, Chongqing, and Zhejiang Provinces since its discovery in Jiangsu Province in 1982 (1). China is confronted with an enormous threat to its pine forests. B. xylophilus is transmitted by the insect vector pine sawyer beetle (Monochamus alternatus). The main host trees are Pinus massoniana, P. thunbergii, and P. de

A river runs through it: intraspecific variability in hotter-drought-related physiological traits across the Mississippi divide in Pinus taeda L.

Human activities are intensifying heatwaves and droughts, threatening forest ecosystems worldwide. However, understanding intraspecific variation in physiological traits that confer resistance to hotter drought is critical for predicting tree responses to climate change. In Pinus taeda L., long-term geographic isolation across the Mississippi River Valley after the last glacial maximum has resulted in distinct population genetic structures, likely reflecting historical adaptation to contrasting climatic conditions in western and eastern refugia. However, it remains unclear whether contemporary

Pinus Knraiensis Nut skin derived CNC reinforced antibacterial chitosan/gum arabic films incorporating Ocimum gratissimum L. essential oil for packaging beef.

Natural polysaccharide-based film suffers lower strength which will further decrease by adding essential oil to endow antibacterial activity. Herein, cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) prepared from Pinus Knraiensis Nut skin (PKNS) was incorporated in gum arabic (GA)/chitosan (CS) composite film. PKNS CNC exhibited needle-like shape and higher stability due to zeta potential of lower than -30 mV. After it was added into GA/CS film, the biocompatibility among them was better and the strength, barrier to moisture and hydrophobicity of GA/CS film were improved. Ocimum gratissimum L. essential oil (OGEO

Utilization of Pinus pumila seed scales as forestry residues: Green microwave-assisted hydrodistillation for essential oil extraction and its antibacterial activity.

Pinus pumila seed scales, a commonly discarded forestry residue, were utilized in this study as a raw material for essential oil (PSEO) extraction using microwave-assisted hydrodistillation (MAH). Compared with conventional hydrodistillation (HD), MAH increased the PSEO yield (1.119 and 0.886%), while reducing energy consumption (0.5004 and 2.2257 kWh/g) and CO₂ emissions (0.4003 and 1.7806 kg/g), respectively. GC-MS analysis showed that the terpenoid content in PSEO extracted by the MAH method (96.20%) was 7.93% higher than that obtained by the HD method (88.27%). Antibacterial assays demonst

The Combination of Pterocarpus marsupium Bark Extract, Pinus strobus Bark Extract, and Ascorbyl Tetraisopalmitate Inhibits Melanogenesis via Nicotinamide Nucleotide Transhydrogenase Activation.

BACKGROUND: Excessive ultraviolet exposure triggers skin pigment deposition, potentially leading to conditions such as melasma, freckles, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. The skin of individuals with these dermatological conditions exhibits reduced levels of nicotinamide nucleotide transhydrogenase (NNT). While many seek skin-whitening products to address pigmentation, existing options often fail to achieve optimal efficacy. To accomplish a synergistic whitening effect, we developed PPV, a composite formulation incorporating three depigmenting agents: Pterocarpus marsupium bark extract
