Atypical Change Detection in Sound Sequences: A Behavioral and Magnetoencephalography Study in Congenital Amusia.

Pitch change detection and pitch memory are behaviorally impaired in congenital amusia. Yet rather preserved mismatch negativity (MMN) to unexpected pitch changes has previously been reported using EEG, suggesting a discrepancy between conscious and preattentive pitch perception in this population. Coupling MEG with EEG, our study re-examined MMN in congenital amusia in light of two factors: stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA) and change size of the deviant. Individuals with and without congenital amusia passively listened to oddball sequences with either frequency (pitch) or intensity (loudness)

Cross-linguistic comparison of frequency-following responses to voice pitch in American and Chinese neonates and adults.

OBJECTIVES: Cross-language studies, as reflected by the scalp-recorded frequency-following response (FFR) to voice pitch, have shown the influence of dominant linguistic environments on the encoding of voice pitch at the brainstem level in normal-hearing adults. Research questions that remained unanswered included the characteristics of the FFR to voice pitch in neonates during their immediate postnatal period and the relative contributions of the biological capacities present at birth versus the influence of the listener's postnatal linguistic experience. The purpose of this study was to inve

Human tilt perception in a dynamic environment.

This study examines the perception of tilt and linear acceleration as sensed through the utricular otolith of the vestibular system. Any sensation derived from the otolith is a consequence of the displacement of the otolith parallel to its own plane. This leads, naturally, to the definition of a sensation plane. A model is presented which defines this sensation plane. It assumes that the sacular otolith contribution is negligible, an assumption substantiated by correlation with experimental data by Schöne. Applying this model to perceived pitch angle, a simple equation is presented which relat

Speech Rhythm Perception in Japanese: Evidence From Sensorimotor Synchronisation With Connected Speech.

The rhythm of Japanese has often been described as mora-timed, a characterisation that overlooks the richer prosodic hierarchy extending from the mora to the syllable, metrical foot and prosodic word. The present study examines rhythm perception in Japanese using a recently developed sensorimotor synchronisation technique. Forty native speakers of Tokyo Japanese participated in the experiment, synchronising in time with the beat of looped sentences spoken in their native variety. Analysing frequency, accuracy and stability of synchronisation, the study showed that the mora affected the percept

Tone Deafness in Music Does Not Preclude Distributional Learning of Nonnative Tonal Languages in Individuals With Congenital Amusia.

PURPOSE: Previous studies have shown that individuals with congenital amusia exhibit deficient pitch processing across music and language domains. This study investigated whether adult Chinese-speaking listeners with amusia were still able to learn Thai lexical tones based on stimulus frequency of statistical distribution via distributional learning, despite their degraded lexical tone perception. METHOD: Following a pretest-training-posttest design, 21 amusics and 23 typical, musically intact listeners were assigned into bimodal and unimodal distribution conditions. Listeners were asked to d

Auditory identification of frequency-modulated sweeps and reading difficulties in Chinese.

BACKGROUND: In Chinese Mandarin, lexical tones play an important role of providing contrasts in word meaning. They are pitch patterns expressed by frequency-modulated (FM) signals. Yet, few studies have looked at the relationship between low-level auditory processing of frequency signals and Chinese reading skills. AIMS: The study aims to identify the role of auditory frequency processing in Chinese lexical tone awareness as well as character recognition in Chinese-speaking children. METHODS: Children with (N = 28) and without (N = 27) developmental dyslexia (DD) were recruited. All particip

Divergent processing strategies for auditory sequence recognition in humans and zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata).

Deriving sequential information from complex sounds is a challenge for auditory systems, yet it remains unclear whether humans and nonhuman species integrate multidimensional cues or prioritize a single dimension when processing multidimensional input. We investigated how humans and zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata) process concurrent acoustic cues using an identical behavioural paradigm with complex-tone sequences. By presenting probe stimuli that selectively preserved or disrupted either pitch or formant trajectory, we quantified these processing strategies. We show that zebra finches empl

Do developmental dyslexia and congenital amusia share underlying impairments?

Developmental dyslexia and congenital amusia have common characteristics. Yet, their possible association in some individuals has been addressed only scarcely. Recently, two converging studies reported a sizable comorbidity rate between these two neurodevelopmental disorders (Couvignou et al., Cognitive Neuropsychology 2019; Couvignou & Kolinsky, Neuropsychologia 2021). However, the reason for their association remains unclear. Here, we investigate the hypothesis of shared underlying impairments between dyslexia and amusia. Fifteen dyslexic children with amusia (DYS+A), 15 dyslexic children wi

Melodic interval perception with acoustic and electric hearing in bimodal and single-sided deaf cochlear implant listeners.

Two notes sounded sequentially elicit melodic intervals and contours that form the basis of melody. Many previous studies have characterized pitch perception in cochlear implant (CI) users to be poor which may be due to the limited spectro-temporal resolution and/or spectral warping with electric hearing compared to acoustic hearing (AH). Poor pitch perception in CIs has been shown to distort melodic interval perception. To characterize this interval distortion, we recruited CI users with either normal (single sided deafness, SSD) or limited (bimodal) AH in the non-implanted ear. The contralat

Perception of aperiodicities in synthetically generated voices.

The purpose of this study was to investigate univariate relationships between perceived dysphonia and variation in pitch perturbation, amplitude perturbation, and additive noise. A time-domain, pitch-synchronous synthesis technique was used to generate sustained vowels varying in each of the three acoustic dimensions. A panel of trained listeners provided direct magnitude estimates of roughness in the case of the stimuli varying in pitch and amplitude perturbation, and breathiness in the case of the stimuli varying in additive noise. Very strong relationships were found between perceived rough

The time course of the acoustic reflex.

The time course of the impedance changes caused by the contralateral acoustic reflex was investigated in five normal hearing, young adult subjects The acoustic reflex function was measured with equipment having a time constant of 15 milliseconds which permitted precise temporal measures. Temporal intervals from signal onset and termination to various portions of the acoustic reflex function were derived using an analysis procedure based on the slope function underlying the acoustic reflex response. These temporal intervals are related to physiological events underlying the acoustic reflex.

Temporal processing in low-frequency channels: effects of age and hearing loss in middle-aged listeners.

BACKGROUND: Hearing loss and age interfere with the auditory system's ability to process temporal changes in the acoustic signal. A key unresolved question is whether high-frequency sensorineural hearing loss (HFSNHL) affects temporal processing in the low-frequency region where hearing loss is minimal or nonexistent. A second unresolved question is whether changes in hearing occur in middle-aged subjects in the absence of HFSNHL. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was twofold: (1) to examine the influence of HFSNHL and aging on the auditory temporal processing abilities of low-frequency audi

Attention to memory: Asymmetric enhancement of mnemonic features in auditory working memory.

Models of auditory attention propose that multiple sound features are integrated into a perceptual object and that selective attention enhances the fidelity of these object-based representations. Similar attentional mechanisms appear to operate on representations held in auditory working memory, yet evidence has largely focused on a single feature. Thus, it remains unknown whether redirecting attention to an auditory memory object enhances multiple, distinct features bound to that object, or whether such enhancement varies across features depending on modality-specific biases or prior knowledg

The Perception of Breathiness in the Voices of Pediatric Speakers.

BACKGROUND: The perception of pediatric voice quality has been investigated using clinical protocols developed for adult voices and acoustic analyses designed to identify important physical parameters associated with normal and dysphonic pediatric voices. Laboratory investigations of adult dysphonia have included sophisticated methods, including a psychoacoustic approach that involves a single-variable matching task (SVMT), characterized by high inter- and intra-listener reliability, and analyses that include bio-inspired models of auditory perception that have provided valuable information re

Mapping Specific Mental Content during Musical Imagery.

Humans can mentally represent auditory information without an external stimulus, but the specificity of these internal representations remains unclear. Here, we asked how similar the temporally unfolding neural representations of imagined music are compared to those during the original perceived experience. We also tested whether rhythmic motion can influence the neural representation of music during imagery as during perception. Participants first memorized six 1-min-long instrumental musical pieces with high accuracy. Functional MRI data were collected during: 1) silent imagery of melodies t

Dynamic visual speech perception in a patient with visual form agnosia.

To examine the role of dynamic cues in visual speech perception, a patient with visual form agnosia (DF) was tested with a set of static and dynamic visual displays of three vowels. Five conditions were tested: (1) auditory only which provided only vocal pitch information, (2) dynamic visual only, (3) dynamic audiovisual with vocal pitch information, (4) dynamic audiovisual with full voice information and (5) static visual only images of postures during vowel production. DF showed normal performance in all conditions except the static visual only condition in which she scored at chance. Contro

Directionally biased neuronal responses to pitch-axis vestibular stimulation in larval zebrafish compared to roll-axis responses.

The vestibular apparatus plays a pivotal role in maintaining postural equilibrium and processing movement signals, underscoring its importance in studying certain neurological disorders. Here, we present a rotating light-sheet microscope, enabling brain-wide functional recordings during dynamic vestibular stimulation along the pitch axes in addition to the roll axis in head-restrained zebrafish larvae. The system incorporates a double galvanometer mirror configuration, is amenable to 3D printing, and enhances scanning efficiency. Employing this apparatus, we have successfully conducted the fir

Use of thin-section, multidetector row helical CT images for coronal oblique reformations for optimal visualization of structures in the hepatoduodenal ligament.

Multidetector row computed tomography (CT) can acquire abdominal images of unprecedented thinness in a single breath-hold. This study investigated whether acquiring source axial images at 1.25 mm as opposed to 2.5 mm would result in a perceptible difference in image quality for coronal oblique reformations. Similarly, the hypothesis that a slice pitch of 3:1 would be superior to 6:1 was evaluated. Twenty-nine CT studies were retrospectively evaluated. The images were divided into four groups: 1.25-mm axial images, pitch 3:1; 2.5-mm axial images, pitch 3:1; 1.25-mm axial images, pitch 6:1; and

Audiologic outcomes with the penetrating electrode auditory brainstem implant.

OBJECTIVE: The penetrating electrode auditory brainstem implant (PABI) is an extension of auditory brainstem implant (ABI) technology originally developed for individuals deafened by neurofibromatosis type 2. Whereas the conventional ABI uses surface electrodes on the cochlear nuclei, the PABI uses 8 or 10 penetrating microelectrodes in conjunction with a separate array of 10 or 12 surface electrodes. The goals of the PABI were to use microstimulation to reduce threshold current levels, increase the range of pitch percepts, and improve electrode selectivity and speech recognition. PATIENTS AND

Pitch Discrimination Testing in Patients with a Voice Disorder.

Auditory perception plays an important role in voice control. Pitch discrimination (PD) is a key index of auditory perception and is influenced by a variety of factors. Little is known about the potential effects of voice disorders on PD and whether PD testing can differentiate people with and without a voice disorder. We thus evaluated PD in a voice-disordered group (n = 71) and a non-voice-disordered control group (n = 80). The voice disorders included muscle tension dysphonia and neurological voice disorders and all participants underwent PD testing as part of a comprehensive voice assessme
