Effect of Nonprotein Components for Lipid Oxidation in Emulsions Stabilized by Plant Protein Extracts.

Plant protein ingredients are rich in non-protein components of which the antioxidant and pro-oxidant effects are expected to be considerable. In this paper, commercial soy and pea protein isolates and concentrates were selected by using their soluble fractions to prepare oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions. Emulsions stabilized with soy protein isolates were more prone to lipid oxidation than those with soy protein concentrate or pea protein isolate. Compositional analysis revealed that the soluble fraction of soy protein isolates contained higher concentrations of phenolic compounds and metals (iro

Plant extracts and betulin from Ligaria cuneifolia inhibit P-glycoprotein function in leukemia cells.

Overexpression of P-glycoprotein (P-gp), which is linked to multidrug resistance (MDR), is one of the underlying obstacles to the success of chemotherapy as it reduces the efficacy of anticancer drugs and the side effects of these increase as a result of any increased dose to achieve the therapeutic effect. To identify agents with P-gp inhibitory properties, ethanol extracts from 80 plants were screened for their ability to increase intracellular doxorubicin-associated fluorescence, and the extract of Ligaria cuneifolia was found to be the most effective. Its bioassay-guided isolation yielded

Restraining the multidrug efflux transporter STY4874 of Salmonella Typhi by reserpine and plant extracts.

Efflux-mediated multidrug resistance is a well-known phenomenon facilitated by multidrug resistant (MDR) transporters. One of the approaches to counteract efflux-mediated resistance is the use of MDR pump inhibitors, and thus be used in combination with the conventional antibiotics to treat deadly diseases like typhoid fever. We have previously reported that STY4874, an efflux transporter of Salmonella serotype Typhi, exhibited promising characteristics as MDR pump. In this study, we aimed to get an insight into possible STY4874 inhibitors of plant origin. STY4874 was overexpressed in Escheric

Anthelmintic activity of selected ethno-medicinal plant extracts on parasitic stages of Haemonchus contortus.

BACKGROUND: Parasitic roundworms (nematodes) cause substantial morbidity and mortality in livestock animals globally, and considerable productivity losses to farmers. The control of these nematodes has relied largely on the use of a limited number of anthelmintics. However, resistance to many of these these anthelmintics is now widespread, and, therefore, there is a need to find new drugs to ensure sustained and effective treatment and control into the future. METHODS: Recently, we developed a screening assay to test natural, plant extracts with known inhibitory effects against the free-livin
