Improved phosphorus acquisition by tobacco through transgenic expression of mitochondrial malate dehydrogenase from Penicillium oxalicum.

Phosphorus (P) is an essential nutrient for plant growth and development, but is generally unavailable and inaccessible in soil, since applied P is mostly fixed to aluminium (Al) and ferrum (Fe) in acidic soils and to calcium (Ca) in alkaline soils. Increased organic acid excretion is thought to be one mechanism by which plants use to enhance P uptake. In this study, we overexpressed a mitochondrial malate dehydrogenase (MDH) gene from the mycorrhizal fungi Penicillium oxalicum in tobacco. The MDH activity of transgenic lines was significantly increased compared to that of wild type. Malate co

Use of alternative plant resources by common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) in the semi-arid caatinga scrub forests of northeastern Brazil.

The common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) is amply distributed in the Brazilian Northeast, but little is known of its ecology in the semi-arid Caatinga scrublands. The present study provides the first detailed data on the composition of the diet of C. jacchus in Caatinga ecosystems, derived from observations at four sites in the state of Sergipe. While exudate sources were gouged at all four sites in a manner typical of the species, fruit was the principal component of the diet at the main study site during most months, and a number of unusual items were eaten, including leaves, and the reprodu

Rhizospheric life of Salmonella requires flagella-driven motility and EPS-mediated attachment to organic matter and enables cross-kingdom invasion.

Salmonella is an established pathogen of the members of the kingdom Animalia. Reports indicate that the association of Salmonella with fresh, edible plant products occurs at the pre-harvest state, i.e. in the field. In this study, we follow the interaction of Salmonella Typhimurium with the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana to understand the process of migration in soil. Plant factors like root exudates serve as chemo-attractants. Our ex situ experiments allowed us to track Salmonella from its free-living state to the endophytic state. We found that genes encoding two-component systems and prot

Strigolactones can be a potential tool to fight environmental stresses in arid lands.

BACKGROUND: Environmental stresses pose a significant threat to plant growth and ecosystem productivity, particularly in arid lands that are more susceptible to climate change. Strigolactones (SLs), carotenoid-derived plant hormones, have emerged as a potential tool for mitigating environmental stresses. METHODS: This review aimed to gather information on SLs' role in enhancing plant tolerance to ecological stresses and their possible use in improving the resistance mechanisms of arid land plant species to intense aridity in the face of climate change. RESULTS: Roots exude SLs under differen

Metabolism-linked methylotaxis sensors responsible for plant colonization in Methylobacterium aquaticum strain 22A.

Motile bacteria take a competitive advantage in colonization of plant surfaces to establish beneficial associations that eventually support plant health. Plant exudates serve not only as primary growth substrates for bacteria but also as bacterial chemotaxis attractants. A number of plant-derived compounds and corresponding chemotaxis sensors have been documented, however, the sensors for methanol, one of the major volatile compounds released by plants, have not been identified. Methylobacterium species are ubiquitous plant surface-symbiotic, methylotrophic bacteria. A plant-growth promoting b

Fate of carbamazepine and its effect on physiological characteristics of wetland plant species in the hydroponic system.

Plants play a cardinal role in removing various pollutants through the synergistic interaction with filling materials and microbes of constructed wetlands (CWs). However, the information regarding the selection of plant species to remove pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) is not adequate. The present study attempted to select an appropriate plant species for CWs, considering their characteristics and physiological response to PhACs. In this regard, batch hydroponics studies were carried out to assess the removal, fate, and antioxidative response of carbamazepine (CBZ) in four wetland pl

The effect of nitrogen nutrition on cluster root formation and proton extrusion by Lupinus albus.

Nitrogen nutrition can influence cluster root formation in many wild species, but the effect of N form on cluster root formation and root exudation by white lupin is not known. In a solution culture study, we examined the effect of N nutrition (ammonium, nitrate, both or N2 fixation) on cluster root formation and H+ extrusion by white lupin plants under deficient and adequate P supply. The number of cluster roots increased greatly when plants were supplied with I microM P compared with 50 microM P, the increase being 7.8-fold for plants treated with (NH4)2SO4, 3-fold for plants treated with KN

Spatio-Temporal Plasticity of Root Exudation in Three Temperate Tree Species: Effects of Season, Site, and Soil Characteristics.

Root exudation provides a constant carbon input to the rhizosphere and is therefore a very important factor in shaping this hotspot of biological activity. Nonetheless, data on root exudation and its spatio-temporal plasticity are scarce. This study provides insights into compound-specific root exudation in three temperate tree species in two seasons (late spring and late summer) and two soil compartments (forest floor and the top mineral soil), including the effect of soil chemistry. At four sites with differing mean annual temperatures and soil phosphorus levels, root exudates were sampled u

Influence of root morphology and mycorrhizal type on root exudation rates among 10 co-existing broadleaved tree species in a cool-temperate forest.

Identification of the factors explaining variations in tree root exudates is crucial for understanding belowground carbon dynamics. The relative importance of plant functional types and root morphological and physiological traits in explaining differences of root exudation remains unclear. To elucidate the key factors influencing root exudation, we examined root exudation rates, morphological traits (specific root length, specific root area, tissue density, and diameter), and respiration rates across 10 co-existing tree species in the absence of significant environmental gradients. The selecte

Influence of Root Exudates and Soil on Attachment of Pasteuria penetrans to Meloidogyne arenaria.

The bacterium Pasteuria penetrans is a parasite of root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.). Endospores of P. penetrans attach to the cuticle of second-stage juveniles (J2) and subsequently sterilize infected females. When encumbered by large numbers of spores, juveniles are less mobile and their ability to infect roots is reduced. This study looked at different factors that influence spore attachment of P. penetrans to the root-knot nematode Meloidogyne arenaria. Pretreatment of J2 with root exudates of eggplant (Solanum melongena cv. Black beauty) reduced spore attachment compared with pretrea

The effects of allelochemicals from root exudates of Flaveria bidentis on two Bacillus species.

To determine the allelopathic effects of root exudates from Flaveria bidentis on function of Bacillus, pot experiment was used to collect root exudates from living plants and test its allelopathic effects on function of Bacillus frigoritolerans and Bacillus megaterium, which were two dominant bacteria in the rhizosphere soil of F. bidentis. To obtain the allelopathic substances, the root exudates were successively extracted by N-hexane, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, and N-butanol, and their allelopathic effects were tested. The results showed that B. frigoritolerans and B. megaterium conside

Identification and characterization of excreted-secreted products and surface coat antigens of animal and plant-parasitic nematodes.

Nematode surface coat (SC) proteins and excreted-secreted products (E-S) are likely to play important roles in the host-parasite interaction and considerable similarities can be found in SC proteins and E-S products from certain plant and animal parasitic nematodes. Monoclonal antibodies raised to E-S products of plant-parasitic nematodes were shown to cross-react with E-S products and the surface coats of the animal parasites Trichinella spiralis and Haemonchus contortus. Most of the antibodies recognized carbohydrate epitopes but the activity of 2 MAbs (IACR-CCNj.2a.15 and IACR-Misec.8D.3) w

Hydrolysis of riboflavins in root exudates under iron deficiency and alkaline stress.

Riboflavins are secreted under iron deficiency as a part of the iron acquisition Strategy I, mainly when the external pH is acidic. In plants growing under Fe-deficiency and alkaline conditions, riboflavins have been reported to accumulate inside the roots, with very low or negligible secretion. However, the fact that riboflavins may undergo hydrolysis under alkaline conditions has been so far disregarded. In this paper, we report the presence of riboflavin derivatives and products of their alkaline hydrolysis (lumichrome, lumiflavin and carboxymethylflavin) in nutrient solutions of Cucumis sa

Ecological Mechanisms Underlying the Effects of Forest-Medicinal Plant Agroforestry Systems on Soil Quality and the Understory Environment.

Long-term monoculture management of plantation forests has caused declining soil fertility and biodiversity loss, a key bottleneck for sustainable forestry. Understory cultivation of medicinal plants, forming a multi-layered vertical structure, offers a promising pathway to improve land-use efficiency while balancing ecological protection and economic benefit. Using the framework "plant functional traits-soil processes-ecosystem functions," this paper examines how forest-medicinal plant agroforestry systems affect soil quality and the understory environment. Aboveground traits (specific leaf a

Flavonoids from Heliotropium subulatum exudate and their evaluation for antioxidant, antineoplastic and cytotoxic activities II.

The flavonoids are the largest group of phenolic compounds isolated from a wide range of higher plants. These compounds work as antimicrobials, anti-insect agents and protect plants from other types of biotic and abiotic stresses. Various researchers have suggested that flavonoids possessed antioxidant, antineoplastic and cytotoxic activities. The main objective of this study was to test dichloromethane fraction of resinous exudate of Heliotropium subulatum for their antioxidant, antineoplastic and cytotoxic activities, as well as to search new antioxidant and antineoplastic agents for pharmac

Wound coverage by the linen dressing accelerates ulcer healing.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic ulcers are the main cause of morbidity and mortality, and the incidence of chronic wounds is expected to increase given that people live longer and that there are civil diseases. AIM: Much attention in the treatment of wounds concerns a dressing that involves wound cleansing, bacterial balance, exudate management and local tissue in a wound environment. These important elements of the evaluation led to the development of an interactive dressing based entirely on flax raw materials. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The complete dressing for wound coverage was prepared from plant (f

Ecology of Australia: the effects of nutrient-poor soils and intense fires.

Australia, the flattest, driest, and geologically oldest vegetated continent, has a uniquely high proportion of nutrient-poor soils. We develop a "Nutrient-Poverty/Intense-Fire Theory," which postulates that most anomalous features of organisms and ecosystems of Australia are the evolutionary consequences of adaptations to nutrient poverty, compounded by intense fire that tends to occur as a result of nutrient poverty. The fundamental tenet of the theory is that plants growing in environments with plentiful light and periodic adequate moisture, but on soils poor in phosphorus, zinc, and other

Redox-active di-O-methylated coumarins exudation contributes to genotype-dependent iron deficiency tolerance in soybean.

Iron (Fe) deficiency is a widespread disorder limiting global soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) production. Although root exudation is a key adaptive mechanism for Fe scarcity in species like Arabidopsis, a detailed chemical characterization of soybean exudates is lacking. Here, we examined the accumulation and secretion of phenolic compounds in soybean roots and their correlation with intraspecific tolerance to Fe-deficiency chlorosis. Seven soybean genotypes with contrasting tolerance, derived from U.S. breeding programs, were analyzed. Root exudates from Fe-deficient soybean plants solubiliz
