Neuronal projections and putative interaction of multimodal inputs in the subesophageal ganglion in the blowfly, Phormia regina.

In flies, the maxillary palp possesses olfactory sensilla housing olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs), which project to the primary olfactory center, the antennal lobes (ALs). The labellum possesses gustatory sensilla housing gustatory receptor neurons (GRNs), which project to the primary gustatory center, the subesophageal ganglion (SOG). Using an anterograde staining method, we investigated the axonal projections of sensory receptor neurons from the maxillary palp and labellum to the SOG or other parts of brain in the blowfly, Phormia regina. We show that maxillary mechanoreceptor neurons and

Ornithophily in the trumpet creeper (Campsis radicans).

The diversification of hummingbirds (Trochilidae) has shaped the pollination strategies and floral trait evolution in at least 68 families of flowering plants in the Western Hemisphere. The trumpet creeper (Bignoniaceae) is the quintessential example of ornithophily in eastern North America. The mutualistic relationship between this orange-flowered liana and the ruby-throated hummingbird (Archilochus colubris) was illustrated as early as 1731. However, neither historical nor modern accounts accurately describe the feeding behavior of ruby-throats at trumpet creeper flowers or the floral adapta

Toxic compounds in honey.

There is a wealth of information about the nutritional and medicinal properties of honey. However, honey may contain compounds that may lead to toxicity. A compound not naturally present in honey, named 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), may be formed during the heating or preservation processes of honey. HMF has gained much interest, as it is commonly detected in honey samples, especially samples that have been stored for a long time. HMF is a compound that may be mutagenic, carcinogenic and cytotoxic. It has also been reported that honey can be contaminated with heavy metals such as lead, arseni

FATAL HONEY POISONING IN SOUTHWEST CHINA: A CASE SERIES OF 31 CASES.

Honey poisoning cases occur in southwestern China. In this case series, we attempted to determine the symptoms and causes of honey poisoning from 2007 to 2012 in southwestern China. We also conducted a quantitative melissopalynological analysis of honey samples. During the study period, 31 honey poisoning cases occurred in the study location, all during July to August. All the cases occurred after consuming at least 100 grams of honey. The most frequent symptoms were nausea and vomiting (100%), abdominal pain (90.3%), diarrhea (74.2%), palpitations (61.3%), dizziness (54.8%), chest congestion

Nutrient content of diet affects the signaling activity of the insulin/target of rapamycin/p70 S6 kinase pathway in the African malaria mosquito Anopheles gambiae.

Regulation of female mosquito feeding and reproduction plays a central role in their disease-vector competence. In this study we show that Anopheles gambiae mosquitoes engorged on albumin, amino acid and saline meals the same way as on blood, whereas sucrose evoked a typical plant nectar feeding response. Among the artificial diets, only the albumin-containing ones allowed follicular development. The target of rapamycin (TOR)/p70 S6 kinase (S6K) pathway has been identified as an essential nutrient-sensing tool controlling egg development in mosquitoes under the control of regulating inputs fro

Orchids mimic green-leaf volatiles to attract prey-hunting wasps for pollination.

An outstanding feature of orchids is the diversity of their pollination systems [1]. Most remarkable are those species that employ chemical deceit for the attraction of pollinators [2]. The orchid Epipactis helleborine is a typical wasp flower, exhibiting physiological and morphological adaptations for the attraction of pollinating social wasps [3]. As noted by Darwin [1], this species is almost entirely overlooked by other potential pollinators, despite a large nectar reward. Therefore, the mechanism for the attraction of pollinating social wasps was something of a mystery. By using a combina

New perspectives on taste and primate evolution: the dichotomy in gustatory coding for perception of beneficent versus noxious substances as supported by correlations among human thresholds.

In various environments where primates are presently observed, as well as in forests and savannas which have been inhabited by australopithecines and early hominids, there are (or there have been presumably) categories of substances eliciting taste signals associated with stereotyped responses. Such is the case for various soluble sugars of fruits and nectars, attracting consumers, and for several plant compounds in which bitter or strongly astringent properties have a repulsive effect. The occurrence of such classes of tasty substances among natural products appears to be related to the evolu

Preterm infant swallowing of thin and nectar-thick liquids: changes in lingual-palatal coordination and relation to bolus transit.

Tongue-soft palate coordination and bolus head pharyngeal transit were studied by means of postacquisition kinematic analysis of videofluoroscopic swallowing images of ten preterm infants referred from hospital NICUs due to poor oral feeding and suspicion of aspiration. Sequences of coordinated tongue-soft palate movements and bolus transits during swallows of thin-consistency and nectar-thick-consistency barium were digitized, and time series data were used to calculate continuous relative phase, a measure of coordination. During swallows of nectar-thick compared to thin barium, tongue-soft p

The role of honey in the ecology of the hive: Nutrition, detoxification, longevity, and protection against hive pathogens.

Honey is the source of energy for the European honey bee, Apis mellifera. Beyond simple nutrition and a hedge against the seasonal, geographic, and chemical unpredictability of nectar, honey has properties that protect the hive against various stresses. Enzyme-mediated detoxification during honey ripening neutralizes potentially toxic phytochemicals, and bees that consume honey have enhanced tolerance to other ingested toxins. Catalase and antioxidant phenolics protect honey bees from oxidative damage caused by reactive oxygen species, promoting their longevity. Phytochemical components of hon

The molecular basis for abnormal human lung development.

While foraging for nectar and pollen, bees are exposed to a myriad of xenobiotics, including plant metabolites, which may exert a wide range of effects on their health. Although the bee genome encodes enzymes that help in the metabolism of xenobiotics, it has lower detoxification gene diversity than the genomes of other insects. Therefore, bees may rely on other components that shape their physiology, such as the microbiota, to degrade potentially toxic molecules. In this study, we show that amygdalin, a cyanogenic glycoside found in honey bee-pollinated almond trees, can be metabolized by bot

Uneven Culturable Yeast Communities Harbored by Two Sympatric Stingless Bee Species: Scaptotrigona depilis and Tetragona clavipes.

Insects are essential partners for yeasts, playing a key role in their dispersal to new environments. Stingless bees (Apidae: Corbiculata: Meliponini) are social corbiculate bees which lack a functional sting. They are important pollinators in tropical and subtropical regions, foraging for nectar, pollen, and resins, thereby enriching their nests with plant-associated microbes, including yeasts. Here we assessed the yeast diversity associated with stingless bees and their provisions, by thoroughly sampling guts, brood cells, pollen, and honey pots, across seven different Meliponini species: Fr

Sexually concordant selection on floral traits despite greater opportunity for selection through male fitness.

Pollinators are important drivers of floral trait evolution, yet plant populations are not always perfectly adapted to their pollinators. Such apparent maladaptation may result from conflicting selection through male and female sexual functions in hermaphrodites. We studied sex-specific mating patterns and phenotypic selection on floral traits in Aconitum gymnandrum. After genotyping 1786 offspring, we partitioned individual fitness into sex-specific selfed and outcrossed components and estimated phenotypic selection acting through each. Relative fitness increased with increasing mate number,

Two new species of Rhipidoglossum (Orchidaceae, Angraecinae) from Central Africa, probably pollinated by settling moths.

A revision of Central African specimens of Rhipidoglossum has revealed two new species from the Cameroon Volcanic Line (CVL) and the lowland and peripheric forests of the Guineo-Congolian rainforest block. Rhipidoglossum acuminifolium sp. nov. is endemic to the CVL and is morphologically related to R. delepierreanum from the Western Rift Mountains. This disjunction may suggest historical connectivity or long-distance dispersal between these montane systems. Footage from Mount Cameroon recorded the settling moth Afroracotis cf. squalida (Lepidoptera, Erebidae) as a potential pollinator of R. ac

Natural plant sugar sources of Anopheles mosquitoes strongly impact malaria transmission potential.

An improved knowledge of mosquito life history could strengthen malaria vector control efforts that primarily focus on killing mosquitoes indoors using insecticide treated nets and indoor residual spraying. Natural sugar sources, usually floral nectars of plants, are a primary energy resource for adult mosquitoes but their role in regulating the dynamics of mosquito populations is unclear. To determine how the sugar availability impacts Anopheles sergentii populations, mark-release-recapture studies were conducted in two oases in Israel with either absence or presence of the local primary suga

A Comprehensive Review of the Botany, Bioactive Compounds and Health Benefits of Leptospermum.

There is increasing interest in research and application of natural bioactive compounds due to the growing demand for functional ingredients from the pharmaceutical, cosmetic and food industries. A major challenge is finding suitable natural plant resources for the development of functional ingredients. Leptospermum, a genus of the myrtle family (Myrtaceae), is primarily native to Australia. This genus has been traditionally used for the treatment of a range of ailments, such as colds, fever, constipation, diarrhoea, skin, inflammation, stomach disorder and both internal and external pain. Long-term behaviour of 137Cs in archived honey samples from a lowland mosaic landscape and a forest-influenced locality in southern Slovakia (1957-2001).

Honey and honeybee products are widely recognised as effective bioindicators of environmental contamination due to their ability to integrate pollutants over large foraging areas. In this study, archived honey samples were used to reconstruct the long-term dynamics of radiocaesium (¹³⁷Cs) in southern Slovakia. Archived honey samples originating from two contrasting environments in southern Slovakia were analysed retrospectively using high-resolution gamma spectrometry. The dataset comprised honey samples from a lowland locality (1958-2001, n = 35) and honey samples originating from a nearby fo

A multiomics analysis of antioxidant and neurotransmitter disorder in honey bees caused by the bioinsecticide, Spinosad.

The natural origin and biodegradable nature of bioinsecticides endow them with promising application potential. Spinosad, a major microbial bioinsecticide, has been detected in nectar source plants. However, the impact of bioinsecticides on honey bee gut health has not been sufficiently evaluated. This study comprehensively assessed the effects of three Spinosad concentrations (0.1, 0.25, and 0.5 mg/L) on the apparent gut health of 7-day-old adult honey bee workers (Apis cerana Fabricius). Following two weeks of oral exposure to Spinosad, there was no significant decline in honey bee survival

Nicotianin-I: A Tobacco Floral Nectar Peptide with Anticandidal Activity.

Multidrug-resistant microorganisms are major threats to society, leading to the necessity of alternative molecules to fight them back. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), especially those derived from plants, have become relevant for multiple reasons. Therefore, this study evaluated six peptides identified in the floral nectar of ornamental tobacco for their effectiveness against four clinically relevant yeast species (Candida albicans, Candida krusei, Candida parapsilosis, and Candida tropicalis). Pep6 (KHYSCTRHGYCLACYKRWF) was the only one that showed activity against all yeast species, with IC50

Combined nutritional stress and a new systemic pesticide (flupyradifurone, Sivanto®) reduce bee survival, food consumption, flight success, and thermoregulation.

Flupyradifurone (FPF, Sivanto®) is a new butenolide insecticide that, like the neonicotinoids, is a systemic nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) agonist. However, FPF is considered bee-safe (according to standard Risk Assessment tests), and is thus a potential solution to the adverse effects of other pesticides on beneficial insects. To date, no studies have examined the impact of nutritional stress (decreased food diversity and quality) and FPF exposure on bee health although both stressors can occur, especially around agricultural monocultures. We therefore tested the effects of a field

Behavioural regulation of mineral salt intake in honeybees: a self-selection approach.

Minerals are required in small amounts to sustain metabolic activity in animals, but mineral deficiencies can also lead to metabolic bottlenecks and mineral excesses can induce toxicity. For these reasons, we could reasonably expect that micronutrients are actively regulated around nutritional optima. Honeybees have co-evolved with flowering plants such that their main sources of nutrients are floral pollen and nectar. Like other insects, honeybees balance their intake of multiple macronutrients during food consumption using a combination of pre- and post-ingestive mechanisms. How they regulat
