Effect of Bauhinia monandra Kurz Leaf Preparations on Embryonic Stages and Adult Snails of Biomphalaria glabrata (Say, 1818), Schistosoma mansoni Cercariae and Toxicity in Artemia salina.

Biomphalaria glabrata snails constitute the main vector of schistosomiasis in Brazil, and Bauhinia monandra Kurz, the leaves of which contain BmoLL lectin with biocidal action, is a plant widely found on continents in which the disease is endemic. This work describes the composition of B. monandra preparations and the effect on embryos and adult snails, their reproduction parameters and hemocytes. We also describe the results of a comet assay after B. glabrata exposure to sublethal concentrations of the preparations. Additionally, the effects of the preparations on S. mansoni cercariae and env

[Phytotherapeutic aspects of diseases of the circulatory system. 6. Leuzea carthamoides (WILLD.) DC: the status of research and possible use of the taxon].

Leuzea carthamoides (WILLD.) DC., Asteraceae, has become an important taxon usable in human practice and animal production in recent years. Originally an endemic plant of southern Siberia, now it is widely grown not only in the Union of Independent States, once the original region of introduction, but also in central and eastern Europe. The principal constituents of the whole plant are ecdysteroids (5 beta-cholest-6-on-7-ene derivatives) and flavonoids. In addition, the aerial part contains sesquiterpenic lactones of the guajanolide type, and the roots contain polyines (on the thiophene base).

Studies on the aetiology of coeliac disease: no evidence for lectin-like components in wheat gluten.

In an approach to examine the lectin-hypothesis in the pathogenesis of coeliac disease, the presence of lectin-like components in three wheat gluten preparations known to induce coeliac disease, gliadin, Frazer fraction III and an acetic acid/ethanol extract of gluten, was investigated. Lectin-like components in these wheat gluten preparations were traced in binding studies employing a variety of model glycoproteins glycosylated with the different types of N-linked oligosaccharides, i.e., those of the high mannose-, complex- and hybrid-type. Binding affinity of wheat proteins to these glycopro

Toxicokinetics of Polar Chemicals in Zebrafish Embryo (Danio rerio): Influence of Physicochemical Properties and of Biological Processes.

The time-resolved uptake of 17 nonionic and ionic polar compounds (logD ≤ 2) with a diversity of functional groups into zebrafish embryos (ZFE) was studied over 96 h of exposure. Among them were pharmaceuticals, pesticides and plant active ingredients. Uptake rates for the diffusion controlled passive uptake through the ZFE membrane ranged from 0.02 to 24 h(-1) for the nonionic compounds and were slower for ionic compounds (<0.008-0.08 h(-1)). The study compounds did not enrich much in the ZFE (median bioconcentration factor of 1, max. 7). Biotransformation significantly influenced the interna

News from Tartary: an ethnopharmacological approach to drug and therapeutic discovery.

Ethnopharmacology aims to identify new therapeutic agents based on their traditional use. It begins by the identification of disease states, and of the traditional therapies for these, most commonly herbals. Herbals of interest are selected from ethnopharmacological surveys, and tested on experimental models of the diseases of interest. Once the activity of the traditional remedy is demonstrated, including dose-dependence, if possible comparatively to reference medications, the active ingredients can be explored, if possible using bioguided extraction. Identified molecules can then be further

The toxicological analysis of Cu, Mn and Zn as elemental impurities in pharmaceutical herbal products for teething available in pharmacies in Poland.

The monitoring of elemental impurities (EIs) in pharmaceutical materials is often not adequately treated, although it is a very important topic because the directive ICH Q3D requires a wide range of elements, often at low concentrations, to be monitored. This article describes the quantitative toxicological analysis of copper, manganese and zinc as EIs in the pharmaceutical gels for teething containing herbs available in Poland. The levels of EIs were measured to evaluate whether the intake of these metals through the gels was within recommended levels. The flame absorption spectrometry (FAAS)
